Difference between Users and Seats

The office I work in is with 6 people. We always worked on 3 users, with a subscription of 7 seats. My assumption was that because we only use 3 users, we van switch our subscription to 3 seats and work with 2 on each seat. Is this assumption correct or are users and seats a very different thing? Do I still need all the seats to make sure everyone can work?

In theory, could you make 10 users, but have only 1 seat, and that way only have 1 person work at the same time?

Change Attribute value when moving to different parts of the drawing?

Seems a bit far fetched but we have to often place symbols down on plans and then build a reference for it. I wanted to know if it is possible to create a boundary or border and when a block's insert point is moved into that location it will change the attribute value to the room name for example

Dynamic Block. Adjustable screw thread.

Hi all. I have a block of a 2D screw and I’m looking to make this dynamic where I can adjust the length. At this stage I’m not too interested in adding in a lookup table with custom lengths.

The 3 final screw threads at the tip taper off and are a different size to the rest of the screw threads.

I’m able to create an array in the dynamic block and adjust the screw length adding removing threads when adjusted outside of the block editor. However I need the ‘tip’ of the screw (the last 3 threads) to move with the adjustment.

I was able to download a dwg file from someone who has already done this and works really well (grabcad, dynamic block wood screw) and even has the ability to adjust the thickness of the screw as well.

I tried picking this apart as I want to build it myself but getting stuck. With the tip of the screw.

If anyone is able to DM me to help out and don’t mind a few questions back and forth I would greatly appreciate it.

Apologies if this is a basic question, I’m quite new to the software and looking to learn as much as I can.

Thanks.

Making sure model space fits paper space border

Noob here. I was given a paperspace layout to size my drawing. I draw in model space. How can I tell if my drawing fits in the paperspace are?

Border in model space vs border in paper space

I have a couple of stupid questions about model and paper space, particularly regarding borders and title blocks. I'm using AutoCAD Electrical 2024.

In the past, when I've made my own templates, I've drawn everything - border, title block, drawing, everything - in model space and just scaled my drawing to fit within the border I'd drawn. About 90% of the drawings I produced were wiring schematics, which were all NTS anyway, so the scaling issue hasn't been terribly bothersome to me.

I have changed jobs and, among other new things, I now sometimes have to produce drawings using clients' borders and title blocks. I notice that for some clients, while I still produce my drawings in model space, the border and title block are drawn in paper space. I create a window (a viewport?) in paper space to capture what I want to show and adjust the scale so that it fits within the border. One client wants everything - title block, border, drawing, everything - done in paper space.

I'm wondering about advantages and disadvantages of one system over the others. I think that drawing in model space and keeping the border in paper space would make it a lot easier to produce properly scaled drawings and change paper sizes without bollixing up the scale. I'd just need to create a layout for each paper size I want to use; I could use the same model space drawing for all of them and just change the viewport scaling. Yes? Are there other reasons to pick one system over another?

These are probably questions that would have been covered in a course somewhere. I'm self-taught, though, and I know there are some pretty big gaps in my knowledge. This is one of them.

Thanks.

Array Sequential Numbering

I have AutoCAD LT and am trying to number chairs in order without having to create individual text boxes for each chair number. How can I array sequential numbers 1,2,3,etc?

I need someone to scale a drawing for me. Happy to pay for this.

The dwg file I have for the ballroom at the Seminole Hard Rock in Tampa is not scaled correctly. We have an event there and I need the floor plan scaled correctly. Currently the plan shows the room being 155' at it's widest point, but it is really 140' across. Obviously this affects how many booths and tables can be planned for and placed.

I've had my contractor there measure and draw the room but they didn't do the foyer and surrounding areas. I do not want to bother the hotel again looking for an open time for them to re-measure.

If anyone can scale the dwg so that the room is 140' across I am happy to pay them. Of if someone has a correctly scaled dwg for that space, I would pay for that.

This community helped me out a couple years ago so I am hopeful it will again, many thanks. Please message me with your email and I will send the dwg your way.

invalid drive error please help

i installed autocad LT 2025 today and whenever I run it, i get this invalid drive error.
it says "Invalid drive D:\"

I've tried installing it in C and F drive.
My PC doesnt even have a D drive.

What I think is causing this issue is that I have a portable hard-disk. It was named drive D and I had autocad in it before. Yesterday I disconnected that hard drive and connected a different one to my pc to transfer some files. After that when i reconnected my original hard drive its name changed to F. almost everything in that drive was not working so i had to change their path to F. but autocad didnt work even after changing its path. I uninstalled it (did a clean uninstall) and reinstalled it today like 3rd time. And now I'm getting this error.

Help me out guys

How does a person find an AutoCAD designer?

I have a fairly simple concept design for a two-piece acrylic shoebox (I have blueprints drawn) but I’m having a heck of a time finding someone who knows AutoCAD.

Can anyone give me advice on how I’d find a 3D Professional willing to take on a small job?

Zoom extents not behaving the same between two drawings (Autocad LT 2024)

Hello, I'm having trouble merging two drawings together, as they behave normally until I bring them together.

File A is a georeferenced site layout, but the layout is old and needs to be replaced with the content of File B. Copying the contents of File B into File A has both layouts in the correct units and everything lines up, however:

When I zoom extents, my view is sent out to near-infinity. This does NOT occur when using zoom extents in either File A or File B separately. I have taken some key blocks from File B into File A as a starting point, and doing just those seems to work properly. Does anyone have any insight into why this may be happening?

Thanks in advance

EDIT: Solved! There was an unloaded PDF that I had to detach from File B before copying everything over to File A

Is there a way for me to add a block to another block in AutoCAD?

Hello all! I'm a student who's just now beginning to learn the program.

In the class I'm taking, we were drawing up a house using dimensions we'd taken earlier that day. Our instructor had us turn it into a block, and we all quickly realized it was too early to do so. For the most part we managed fine in block editor, but I've run into a problem I have no clue how to fix: I accidentally used a window block where the garage door block is supposed to be.

Is there a way for me to copy/paste the garage block into the block editor to replace it? If worse comes to worst I'll just use it for now and accept the loss in marks, but I have to create the driveway now and it really feels like basing it on the wrong block is the kind of thing that's going to cause me a major headache later down the line, so I'd rather not lol.

AutoCAD won’t

After deleting AutoCAD 2024 and downloading AutoCAD 2025 the program won’t open. I’ve spent my whole evening going through their support pages and tried everything. Nothing works.

So I’m in desperate need of help, I need AutoCAD for school and I can’t access support since I’m on an education license and I don’t pay thousands of dollars per year.

Error:

ADLSDK_STATUS_AUTH_PENDING

3:this product has not been registered with the licensing service yet.

UPDATE

Ended up reinstalling my Operating System completely, updating to Windows 11 and it works now.

Spent too many hours trying to make it work so I just decided to clear everything.

Downsave Not Opening for Client

I received a file from a surveyor with their topographic survey complete. I have been using AutoCAD LT2022 to use it without any issues. An architect requested the file but asked for it to be down-saved to 2003 or earlier. Used the DWG converter that is available on LT2022 but Arch is saying it is unopenable on their end. Did it again twice and same issues.

add: On my end, it does not show any errors or anything the notes that the file cannot be downsaved.

Is there a blanket way to fix this without contacting the source of the file? I believe he's out of business and is hard to contact.

Alternative to slow data linked Excel tables?

My AutoCAD template has nine tables that are data linked and updated with Excel.  When I run the datalinkupdate command to update all the tables, it's an extremely slow process.  It might take up to 5 minutes for the data link process to complete.  Each table has between 15 and 50 rows, so we're not talking about a terribly large amount of data. I'm using AutoCAD's native data link feature, not a plug-in.  I wanted to ask:

  • Is this the case with others using data linked tables?
  • Can you recommend any good plug-ins that might make the Excel linking process faster in AutoCAD
  • Is there a totally different process I should be using to create/maintain tables in Excel and get that info into AutoCAD?

I really like the concept behind the data link feature (much easier to maintain & update tables in Excel) but when I need to update them in AutoCAD it's a painfully slow process.  Thanks for the help.

AutoCAD 2025 slow plotting issue

My whole office has been having an issue with AutoCAD 2025 taking several minutes to open up the plotting options window when the user clicks Plot or presses Ctrl+P. (Truly, it's Civil 3D, but I suspect it applies to AutoCAD generally.) I think I've determined the issue, and I just want to get it out into the aether in case someone searches for it in the future. I don't have any other AutoDesk forum accounts to post it on.

It looks to me like what's happening is when you click Plot, AutoCAD immediately searches through the paths in `OPTIONS -> Files -> Printer Support File Path -> Plot Style Table Search Path` looking for plot style files (.CTB or .STB files). We didn't have any issues in AutoCAD 2024. The difference between 2024 and 2025 seems to be that if AutoCAD encounters any Windows shortcuts (.LNK files) in any of those paths, it will try to follow the links and will continue searching deeper in folders it encounters. We had a shortcut to one of our main project folders locations which contained hundreds of projects each containing many folders and probably even more shortcuts. I don't know whether it follows more shortcuts as it encounters them, but I suspect it does. When I deleted this first shortcut to our projects folder, it immediately solved the problem and 2025 now plots very quickly just like it did in 2024.

Weird Contextual Tab issue in Civil3D 2025 installation

I am getting the following error in Civil3D when I open a drawing:

System.BadImageFormatException: Bad IL format.
   at System.Reflection.Assembly.Load(Byte[] rawAssembly, Byte[] rawSymbolStore)
   at Autodesk.AutoCAD.Ribbon.TabEvaluatorFactory.Load()
   at Autodesk.AutoCAD.Internal.Windows.RibbonContent.get_ContextualTabEvaluator()System.BadImageFormatException: Bad IL format.
   at System.Reflection.Assembly.Load(Byte[] rawAssembly, Byte[] rawSymbolStore)
   at Autodesk.AutoCAD.Ribbon.TabEvaluatorFactory.Load()
   at Autodesk.AutoCAD.Internal.Windows.RibbonContent.get_ContextualTabEvaluator()

This happened to me on Windows 11, so I switched over to Windows 10 (fresh install, fresh download/install of C3D) and the problem persists. A google search turns up nothing, which is mind-boggling that I'm the only person this ever happened to... seems like a software issue, but if it is so specific to me only, that would suggest hardware!

The above error appears on open, and then again after every command entered. Contextual ribbon does not work, but so far other things seem to be functional.

Electrical online courses?

Would anyone here be aware of any electrical online courses? I’m looking to bolster my knowledge around electrical engineering but also looking to learn about how it applies to drafting as well as how it could improve my drawings. My goal is to grow into a designer position so any leads would be amazing!

Minor feature idea, or does similar to this exist?

Holding control and right click opens the OSNAP menu. This is useful. What if holding control and LEFT click was the equivalent of the NONE osnap. Or maybe configurable to force a chosen OSNAP without needing to open that menu or using F3 to toggle osnaps on/off.

I feel there are plenty of times when this would be really time saving.

Copy/Paste Method similar to BricsCAD?

Recently moved from BricsCAD to AutoCAD due to some work-related issues between employer and Bricsys.

One thing I do from drawing to drawing is copy/paste notes. BricsCAD allowed me to simply copy a text entity from one drawing and paste to the next without inserting a basepoint. It automatically placed it in the same location from the previous drawing. Is there a way to set this up in AutoCAD without any additional hotkey strokes. It was always a simple "Ctrl+C" > "Ctrl+V".

Edit: I was mistaken on my workflow process. BricsCAD did ask for an insertion/base point, but hitting the ENTER key simply pasted the items in their original points. See below:

  • select item (left mouse click)
  • ctrl+c (copied the selected item)
  • ctrl+tab (switched to the next drawing)
  • ctrl+v (pasted copied item)
  • enter (asked for insertion point, but "enter" defaulted to original insertion point)
  • ctrl+tab (switched to the next drawing)
  • ctrl+v (pasted copied item)
  • enter (asked for insertion point, but "enter" defaulted to original insertion point)
  • repeat...

no where in that sequence of events did i ever specify a base/insertion point.

INVERSE command options getting reset. how to stop that?

One of my users is having an issue with the INVERSE command. He wants it to report in bearing, but it occasionally resets itself to azimuth somehow. I'm not having any luck searching for a cause/fix.

Does anyone know what may influence that please?

What am I doing wrong? :D

Thanks.

Beginner in using AutoCAD - looking for Beginner/Intermediate/Difficult exercises

Evening guys/gals,

I have a history creating 3D Environments in the games industry but thinking about developing my CAD skills. Watched a tutorial on the UI and found a wee image to practice.

Just wondering if there's a source out there which lets you just work your way through a whole bunch of exercises from Beginner/Intermediate/Difficult, whether it's book form, e book or a website full of exercises.

I love CAD and 3D in general, I used to use it during my school holidays when working with my Gdad doing bathroom/kitchen installations however I've been considering taking Community College courses using AutoCAD and maybe getting certified.

Much appreciated! I found a little exercise picture online (white image) and recreated it in AutoCAD 2025 (blue image)

Cannot Find Objects with Text Style

I am attempting to clean up my text styles but I'm stuck trying to delete one. I looked at the non-purge list and it shows there are 18 in each layout that I have the same title block. I've used the qselect command to try and change everything at once as well as going inside the title block and still haven't found the it.

Any advice or clue where I can look for it?

TIA

crashing when panning

I'm encountering a strange issue. I recently started using AutoCAD 2015, and everything works fine, with my system more than meeting the requirements (32GB of RAM paired with an i9 processor). However, whenever I pan around in either large or empty drawings, the program freezes and crashes, displaying an "insufficient memory" error. Not sure what to do,any suggestions?

Compound Curves?!

I use Civil3D and can create compound curves using geometry editor but why is it so hard to create compound curves in AutoCAD? I tried a lot of ways to create compound curves but failed, am I missing something? Does anyone no I quick way to create compound curves using AutoCAD?

Sometimes I break an arc and fillet with next object and get lucky and create a compound curve.

I have two parallel lines (representing a median) 76-ft apart and want to create a compound curve between these lines using 1:1.5.
