Highlighting areas in civil 3d

At my job we have catch basins that need to be As-built but are in active traffic. I need to make these areas stand out in map view on civil 3d. What’s the best tool to make these areas clearly visible even in a very zoomed out viewpoint?

Revit Vs Civil3D

I have a project coming up that I was told would be in Revit. I’ve used Civil3D for over 10 years. They told me to download it and start looking into it. Is Revit that different? I have no clue what Revit is used for. Can I just do the work in Civil3D and covert it to Revit at the end? I believe I’m only doing a layout plan.

'Now Hiring' Thread - Q4 2024

We're going to try having a dedicated thread for all 'Now Hiring' posts instead of having them in the main feed. The goal is to reduce clutter in the main feed and to have a clear place people can check out if they're looking for work or open to freelance opportunities. Career-related discussion is still welcome outside this thread; this is just for job postings.

You may comment in this thread if you:

  • Are working at a company / entity which has at least one job opening currently hiring for a Civil 3D user. This includes internships and temporary jobs.
  • Are an individual / entity with a specific need for freelance work to be done in Civil 3D.

If you make any 'Now Hiring' posts in the main feed, they will be removed and you'll be asked to add it here as a comment instead. The rules for commenting here are as follows:

  • Job openings must be currently hiring to fill a specific role. No open applications or non-specific invitations to apply.
  • Your comment must include the name of the company (if applicable) and a direct link to an open job listing. Headhunters are NOT allowed to make generic comments requesting resumes in hopes of finding a match.
  • Do not share your real name or personal info in any public posts. Keep all discussion about job postings to private messages. Just share your link with any relevant info you have and request those interested to apply or send you a message.
  • You may only make one comment per thread. The mod team will restart this thread a few times per year so the list stays reasonably current. Choose wisely.
  • One comment per job max. Also one comment per company max. I do not want 200 links to jobs at AECOM.
  • If the job you've posted gets filled, please delete / edit / reply to your post to clarify that it's no longer open.

Thanks everyone!

Civil3d xref loading too long in ACC environment

Hi guys, I need your help here with some quirky stuff that is going on in our system.

I work on kinda big project, and we use ACC environment for it. It's my first time actually working with it ( previously I used to work within projectwise). We have dwg 2D models for survey info, that are meant to be consumed as xrefs in multitude of plans. The problem with this files is that you can easily open them, but as soon as you try to xref it, it will take 30-40 minutes to do so. (Attach/overlay both). The other weird thing, is that BIM coordinator don't have that issue. We've run audits on all files involved, -pu everything including regapps , but the problem still persists. Our laptops are the same, software is the same (C3D 2024), and the only difference I can see is that BIM coordinator have more admin rights in ACC.

First I was blaming the fact that the xref was having drefs initially, and connection was never broken, thus when xrefing this file, system was trying to load all of the 3D info from data shortcut. But now it's detached from everything, there's no 3D objects at all in prospector tab, everything is 2D.

I don't know where to look at anymore, this glitch is causing us a lot of delay, and I would appreciate if someone with experience in ACC and Civil3d can help me out.

Automating Station Labeling Along Alignment with Dynamo in Civil 3D

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a solution to streamline a task using Dynamo in Civil 3D, and I hope someone here can help.

Along an alignment, Civil 3D can generate stationing at the geometric control points. Currently, the labels for these control points are created as a single block, which needs to be exploded in order to adjust the position of individual labels. My goal is to use Dynamo to extract the alignment control points and insert individual blocks with station values at these locations, making them easier to edit.

The block definition is already set up in the Civil 3D project, and the attributes should be populated with the corresponding station values.

So far, I’ve been able to generate lists of the coordinates for the control points and their station labels. However, I’m stuck on how to create and insert the block references via Dynamo.

Has anyone worked on something similar or have any suggestions on how to achieve this?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Guidance/mentor/friend

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to grow my skills in AutoCAD, and I thought this might be a great place to connect with someone who can guide me or just be a friend along the way. I’m starting a new role as a CAD technician in a civil engineering firm and want to hit the ground running, but it’s been a while since I’ve actively used AutoCAD or Civil 3D, so I’m feeling a bit rusty.

I’d love to connect with someone who wouldn’t mind answering some questions from time to time or sharing tips and advice. I’m eager to learn, especially about drafting best practices, time-saving tips, and how to approach projects efficiently. I’m also open to trading knowledge if you’re looking for insight into [add any other skills/experience you might have, e.g., surveying, GIS, etc.].

If anyone is interested in being a mentor or even just someone to chat with about all things AutoCAD, feel free to reply here or DM me. I’d really appreciate the help!

Thanks in advance!

Guidance/Mentor

Hey, I am a first-year road engineering student with a deep fascination for road designing. Right now I am learning C3D by myself but here and there I run into problems that I would need a explanation.

I have went through the Autodesk tutorial, watched some Jeff Bartels also. I don't look for somebody to ''teach'' but rather guide and give the necessary explanation.

If you are a designer and would like to give me explanations or guide me, thanks in advance!

Shoutout to the graphic designer for the new r/Civil3D logo

The new logo / icon we'll be using for this subreddit was done by graphic designer Tricia Jones. I commissioned it from her several years ago for some Youtube videos but I think it's a better logo for Civil 3D than any of official Autodesk ones I've seen so we'll use it for this subreddit now. The new 'C3D cube' logo is a subtle but highly effective design that incorporates 2D and 3D elements, much like Civil 3D itself.

Tricia was always very professional and willing to try out different options. I'm happy to recommend her for any graphic design needs you have: https://triciaannjones.com/

Note: Because she designed the logo we'll be using, I consider this a reasonable one-time exception to the rule against commercial promotion. I have no affiliation with her or her company; just hired her for this one design through a freelancing site. And I'm not going to sticky this post, just wanted to give credit where it's due for good work.

Plotting Troubleshooting Flow Chart?

Does such a thing exist? Toggling between the layer manager, CTB, zero layer, and xrefs it a little maddening. Is there a guide to set this shit up correctly? Or something that explains the hierarchy of what overrides what? I inhierited a job and want to get it right for the next segment. Mainly want to get line widths and colors correct when plotting to PDF.

Custom Hatch Pattern

I'm trying to create a custom hatch pattern for how my company hatches concrete removal. Right now we do it using two hatches. ANSI31 and the Concrete hatch. We just hatch the area twice.

I hate it. I'd like to create a hatch that combines to two. Its been a long long time since I've created a hatch but I tried it and I just keep getting a solid hatch. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Organic shape driveway

Could you point me to a tutorial or provide guidance on creating an organically shaped driveway for a single residential project?

I understand that standardised sections of the driveway can be modelled using corridors building pad and space in fron with grading and feature lines, but I’m unsure how to manage the transition as it widens into a rectangular parking area in front of the house with tur. Any resources or tips would be greatly appreciated.

r/Civil3D - Q4 2024 Updates

Hi everyone,

Just some updates for the subreddit as we close out 2024:

  • As I mentioned in my previous post, I'm looking for some people to help as assistant moderators for this subreddit and the other ones I run like r/OpenRoads. If you're interested please read my post in the community announcements section and send me a message.
  • We've grown a lot since I took over the sub and it doesn't seem to be slowing down at all. We've now overtaken the r/autodesk subreddit in membership. On track for 10,000 members within ~18 months, and we're already comparably active to the official Autodesk forum for Civil 3D. That's nuts! I'm proud of the community we've got going here and want to say that one of the things I'm thankful for this year is how relatively easy it has always been to moderate and run. I appreciate everyone who helps keep this place helpful and respectful.
  • Post flair is now required. If we need any new categories made just let me know.
  • I'm debating whether to change the rule about allowing 'Now Hiring' posts since they get reported quite a lot. If you want to keep or change that rule please let me know below. I will also be adding a rule soon that certain topics are off-limits such as politics and religion. Otherwise the rules have held up well so far.
  • Autodesk keeps changing the logos for their software and to be honest I kind of hate most of them so I'm going to use a new C3D logo design and banner image for us going forward. We'll make our own logo, with blackjack and snooker! If you have any suggestions for things to put in the banner image, let me know below.
  • I'd like to add some user flair options, such as for our members who are verifiable Autodesk Expert Elites. If there's any other flair you'd like to see let me know.
  • If there are any other changes you'd like to see, or community events that might be fun or helpful, please comment below.

Thanks & I hope you have a good holiday season!

Viewport Contents Disappearing

I am working on some plan and profiles and the contents in my plan view viewports keep disappearing. In the layout preview at the bottom, you can see that the viewports have contents. The viewports are in the correct orientation, correct scale, correct layer and not frozen or anything.

Any recommendations why this isn’t showing on paper space?

I have already tried MAXACTVP but that did not work as it was already set to 64.

AutoCAD 2022 consumes all ram and crashes while opening a file.

I am working on a project using Civil 3D and created some files for someone to work on. They only use AutoCAD with some plugins and specific landscape architect apps. When they try opening the file using ACAD, it quickly consumes all the ram and crashes the entire machine (all open apps crash and we usually have to restart the machine. The file opens fine in C3D. This happens on every computer we've tried (and they are all more than capable CAD machines).

ACAD tries opening the file and the blue zebra loading bar at the bottom goes crazy trying to load a file from my C: (all our files are stored on a server for reference).

I soon discovered detaching one specific XREF and all Nearmap imagery allowed the file to open and run in ACAD. However, after reattaching everything for plotting, the same XREF wasn't causing an issue. I had to detach a different XREF and eventually detached all the XREF's to get the file to work.

We tried using C3D 2025 and C3D as AutoCAD 2025, and it seemed to work a few times, but we can still replicate the same issue.

I've been unable to find any other documentation on this specific symptoms and problems on the Autodesk forums or elsewhere on any message boards. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Were you able to solve the problem or find anything that fixed the bug?

Custom Linetype Displaying Text Twice?

Currently having an issue when I created a custom linetype with text, it will display the text in another section of the line a second time.

This is my current custom linetype.

A,.1,.1,.12,-.023547,["SAN",STANDARD,y=-.027675,s=.07],-.2,.1,.1,.12

Which should show up as this.

Instead, it's showing up as this.

I've changed the font style to ones using a .shx file and ones that don't and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

When I created the linetype using the make linetype express tool, the text shows up correctly but if I modify the .lin file to get the spacing correct and reload it, it does this.

I'm pounding my head against a wall trying to figure it out so any help is appreciated.

New help with sub assemblies

I'm pretty new to making corridors and I'm working on a project that we have existing ditches. I have some areas where I want to slope at a 3 to 1 from the edge of pavement to the existing surface. This works fine in most places. But there are some areas where the sub assembly I'm using (Subassembly.LinkSlopeToSurface) hits the surface too early. Basically there is a high point that I want to cut out and continue the slope beyond. I'm just not sure how to do it.

What I'm thinking is having a 3to1 slope for a minimum of 3' then doing a 3to1 that targets the existing surface. But I can't figure out how to do that?

You can see in my photo that there is a magental line coming off the edge of pavement. This is the light the corridor created in the section. It hits the existing grade then stops. Really, I'd like it to continue on to be more like the green line.

I'm sure there is an easy way, I just dont know it.

Thanks!

Length and chainage unit different

I am preparing a road alignment and have centerline points that need to be connected to form the alignment. However, when I create the alignment between two points, the chainage distance displayed differs from the actual distance between the points. The chainage is shown in inches format (4+78.68 inches), while the units I set for the drawing are in feet (length between points: 39'-10.68"). (NOTE: 478.69" = 39.89')

How can I ensure the chainage matches the length unit, displaying as 0+39.89 feet instead?

Datum not showing up. Civil 3D 2020

Datum not displaying on other side.

https://preview.redd.it/pn44y2ce873e1.png?width=1815&format=png&auto=webp&s=10f1dd95fbc6bc57e6f00b413f854d639ae1d511

Added datum of main road and the shoulder (which is the subassembly being used for that part, that is not showing the datum) bottom link, which is the equivalent of datum, added a feature line to double down on it. Checked the targeting of the profile for the height, and it is correct. The subassembly itself is displaying correctly, and the height for that subassembly is correct. Did a good bit of section cuts - all same. Right side good, left side bad. Seemingly same properties. No prevail rn :(. Can anybody make me look stupid and point out the obvious!

What is the most effective way of learning Civil3D?

I’ve been using Autocad 2D and Revit on regular basis. I’m told that I need to move on to Civil 3D for my final project.

I couldn’t find many optimal tutorials online. As Civil 3D didn’t look like program which is easy to grasp. Additionally, neither online nor Autocad’s website was helpful.

Has anyone have any advice on practical and effective way of learning Civil 3D?

Thanks in advance

Looking for assistant moderators

Hi everyone,

This subreddit has grown quite a lot over the years and I'm not always as prompt with removing some posts / comments as a subreddit of this size & type really needs. Therefore I'd like to add some assistant moderators.

I'm staying on as the main mod; your main responsibility would be to help review content here and apply the rules to remove posts or whatever as needed. I'd also like to have an informal group chat going with all the mods to discuss new rules or other changes to the subreddit. I'm not expecting any major additional time commitment if you're already a regular reader / commenter here. Help out whenever you'd normally have time to. I'd reserve the right to disagree / override you if I feel strongly about something but I'm not a totalitarian either. If you consistently abuse moderation powers or make otherwise questionable decisions I may remove / replace you. I'd give warnings before taking any kind of action like that though.

This subreddit is mostly working professionals so thankfully there isn't tons of moderating needed, but sometimes things get posted / commented that should be removed ASAP and that's mostly what I'd like help with.

If you're interested please send me a message. I would expect you to have been active on the subreddit for at least a year and not have any major moderation strikes against you in the past. Please tell me your background showing reasonably high expertise with Civil 3D (LinkedIn profile links are fine but not mandatory; I don't need to know your real name). Feel free to share any changes you'd like to see happen for this subreddit as well. Preference will be given to those with longer histories of helpful & respectful activity on this subreddit. Prior experience with forum moderation is also a plus.

Thanks everyone! Hope this will help keep things smoother around here. We've got way more members than I was ever expecting now.

C3D 2025 - missing settings in Toolspace

I'm doing a trial of 2025 and normally Toolspace has a list of pinned settings under the "settings" tab to choose from, but now the settings tab is just blank. I'm using the Civil 3D profile. This is what I'm used to seeing Toolspace look like, but mine has "Drawing1" and then nothing under it, just blank white space all the way down.
