Is a physical calendar worth the cost?

I love the idea of having a calendar but I can’t find anything in the size I want (8x10 or larger) that’s under $20. I thought about going through cat print and binding them myself (it’s like $20 extra to have them bind for you) but I’m not use if it’s worth the hassle at all.

The point of it would be to have each piece of art detachable to hang up as a piece on its own at the end of each month. I don’t know how realistic this is and I’m also wondering if it would end up being too expensive for most people.

I don’t have an online shop (I’m working on it) so I’d be relying entirely on people at art/flea markets to buy them.

Any help is much appreciated!

Please help me price this illustration job

Help! A freelance storyboarding job fell in my lap. I’m not a freelancer by trade so haven’t a clue how to price this (with taxes and other considerations). Could some freelance illustrators advise me how they’d price this job? I want to not undercut myself but quote something fair.

The job: create 18 storyboards for a pitch. Low fidelity, black and white, scenes of people interacting in an office. Turnaround is pretty quick and they want to start this week.

Should I go by hourly rate? Or just a flat rate since the deliverables and timetable are set?

For context: I’m a professional product designer but was trained as an illustrator. I don’t do it for work anymore but have more than enough skill set to take on this type of assignment.

Also, I’d like to take on this job as it will likely lead to more opportunities.

Help with work?

Hi! Recently I've had a lot of changes in my life and with health stuff I'm currently unable to do any like drive or get a job and 1 i'm incredibly bored and 2 would actually like to try and make some money so I'm not mooching off my mom who is currently struggling financially. I am young and still in high school if that might make things complicated. I've tried doing marketing with commission and I've gotten a few which I'm super grateful for but it's very hard to get notice and have any marketing be seen. I was wondering if anyone knows a way to apply for art jobs that are working from home or anywhere that I can start for trying to get things going? I know it's super difficult but I'm definitely trying to get something to stick I'm sure most of you guys feel the same. Thank you!

How to get started as an NSFW artist?

To be straight, I really love drawing nsfw and being able to do that and make money would be great for me, but I don't know where to start.

What would be the best platforms to gain an audience and get commissions? I'm using Twitter but it seems difficult to get an audience as a beginner.

And another question, how could I grow an account with this type of content?

How much should I charge to design a mural that someone else will paint?

My client is a small chain of restaurants that is doing a rebrand/refreshing the look of their stores. One of the things they want me to do is design a mural that can be in multiple locations. I am not able to be in each location to paint the murals myself so for each location they will have someone come out and project my design on the wall to paint it. This is a first for me and I have no idea how much to charge for this. Any advice would be welcome!

What do I do?

I am a 20 year old junior (almost senior) in college majoring in art, and I have no idea what to do after I graduate. I’ve recently started looking at jobs for next year, since I’m going to be taking fewer credits and would like a job, and doing so has forced me to reckon with the fact that I am completely underprepared to start a career as an artist. When I started college, it was my dream to go into animation once I graduated, but unfortunately my school is a pretty generic (albeit absolutely massive) liberal arts college, where the majority of students are computer science majors, and our art department is severely lacking. I won’t go into the details, but lets just say that the art classes I have taken haven’t given me the skills to go into animation, or concept art or character design, or basically any other field I can find. Any time I look at job postings online, the requirements are long lists of skills that I just DON’T HAVE (yet). I’m an armature animator at best, my portfolio is severely lacking, I don’t know how to prepare 2D assets and I don’t have a grasp of 3D anything. I just feel so stuck even though I know these are things I can still learn on my own once I graduate, I don’t know where to start.Should I even bother trying to distinguish myself as an animator given how unbelievable competitive it is as a field? What about concept art, character design, cover illustration??? I’ve heard VFX is less competitive, but I wouldn’t know where to begin to learn it. Tattoo art is intresting, but I don’t know where to find an apprenticeship. I’ve got some professional experience in education and outdoor leadership, which certainly doesn’t hurt, but it also doesn’t really lend itself well to an art career. What do I do???

Print shipping epic fail

I have been doing prints for around 6 months and I just shipped an order for the first time (all sales up to this point have been in person at a market). And holy shit I swear I just got scammed by UPS and I paid nearly $50 to ship this piece. They charged 26.91 for the actual shipping and then 20 for packaging it. Total flop and rookie move bc there's no way artists who do this regularly are paying that much. I would have just left and regrouped but the order really needed to go out today so I just had to take the L....

People who have been doing this awhile, please give me your tips for shipping!!! And also tips for packaging the work myself.

selling art under a pseudonym (legalities)

I use a "pseudonym" (really it's a combo of my name and a nickname as a full name) to avoid using my now ex-husband's last name. And I'm wondering more about the COA. If it's appropriate to sign as your DBA with the "art" or "LLC" at the end or if you can leave out the suffix? For example, would John Doe LLC or John Doe Art be allowed to just sign John Doe?

Alsoooo... in the case of an LLC, would my art be technically owned by the LLC if stop making art or leave this earth to go to the great concession stand in the sky?

I need advice on having a Printed Portfolio to take to conventions/artist's alleys!

For context, here's my website: www.tinybard.art . I have been working with TTRPG commissions for almost 3 years now, but I have never worked on a formal art job. I plan to start networking at art fairs and cosplay cons, both as a visitor and an artist. I already have a few events that'll be attending as an artist lined up.
I figured having a printed portfolio that someone that is interested in my work can take home would be a good idea so I decided to do that. However I am unsure about how to approach it when it comes to writing. On one hand, I think having something more like a mini artbook (the entire thing would be around 40 pages), with descriptions of my creative process and such, would be more interesting to the general public. On the other hand, I think a straight up portfolio might be better for networking with people that could potentially hire me.
My question is: which approach should I go for? Could the artbook approach be a good thing for networking since the person gets to know more about my process if they're interested while seeing the same illustrations I have on my portfolio or would it harm my chances of getting noticed?

What are the plastic bags called to seal art prints in? - How do you ship A4/Letter sized prints?

Often I see on conventions people who sell art prints. Those prints are in transparant plastic bags/sleeves with a striplock on them. What are those called? I'm just looking for the name so I know what to look for :)

To my second part of the question. How would you go about shipping A4/letter sized prints? I was thinking in an envelope with a cardboard back. But I don't know if this would be enough for international shipments.

Hope to hear!

What do you guys use as payment when accepting commissions?

PayPal is the big one I’m expecting to see, but for various reasons I’m trying to move away from using it as my primary payment.

Related to this; do you guys also have thoughts on full names vs psuedonyms online? Honestly the issue I’ve had is just that PayPal is seemingly the only place I can use a psuedonym. It’s the whole reason why I’m stuck using it instead of Zelle…

Commission? How long?

Let's say I got a commission or 2 for an artwork

My question is how many days does it take for a commission to complete?

Should I send WIPs everyday before deadline?

Understand marketing analytics for promoting my artwork on Pinterest

Hey everyone! I’ve recently been trying Pinterest as a tool to market my photography content and direct people to my instagram page. I’m new to the business side of Pinterest and am having some trouble understanding how the analytics work. There seems to be a disconnect between the numbers on the creators analytics page and the numbers reflected in the pin stats. My pins will reflect way higher impressions and saves in the analytics page but only show a very small amount on the page attached directly to the pin. For example, in the photos I’ve attached it shows a pin getting 2k impressions in 30 days but the pin stats only show 10 in the entire time it’s been posted.

Is this a mistake on my part or is it simply a glitch in Pinterest? I want to learn more about marketing on there but am really confused about how the numbers are reported.

For context, I have a business profile, I claimed my instagram account after uploading this post, it has an attached link to my instagram page, and I uploaded it maybe around 3 months ago by manually posting it through the Pinterest app.

Any help is really appreciated!

Event Partner Refuses to Credit My Photography Work

Hi everyone, I need some advice on how to handle a situation with my event partner. I recently collaborated with them on an event, and I was responsible for cohosting and took some pictures throughout the event. However, despite my hard work and effort in editing the photos, my partner has been boosting the pictures on social media without giving me any credit.
I’ve tried talking to them about it, explaining that proper credit is essential for me as a photographer, but they’ve refused to take down the posts or credit me until a week later. They say that I am only asking them to credit me for likes and if that's the case then they will not comply. They said I am trying to ride the coattail of their success and that they are getting annoyed because there is nothing they can do since the post has already been boasted and I need to accept it lol. Then they say they didn't know it was my work, but I and another person were the only one with the camera and the other person sent them the work separately. It’s frustrating because I feel like my work is being taken advantage of, especially since they’re benefiting from the boosted posts without acknowledging my contribution.
Has anyone else experienced something similar? How should I approach this situation and ensure that my work is properly credited?

Prints prices for photography vs other arts

I just attended a mid tier art fair (2 day festival at a major city) and it appeared to me that prints from photographers were priced quite a bit higher than reproduction prints from other artists. E.g. a matted 8x10 photo might be $40+ whereas you could get a much bigger print from other artists at that price say 16x20 to poster sized. It's not true in every case of course but it seemed like a trend to me.

Is this something that others have noticed as well? And if so why might this be the case? If true what has caused photo prints to be higher priced?

(Note I'll use the term artist to refer to a non photography artist for clarity)

Is it the lack of a unique original which oftens goes for much more than a photo of the same size (2-10x). So photogs have to charge more for prints? A deliberate pricing strategy by artists to get more customers at a lower price point who will eventually buy originals? The fact that an original exists depressing prices for artist reproductions (i.e. the customer know there is something much better). More competition from other artists resulting in lower prices? Higher production costs for photo prints? A result of historical pricing differences and cost of production? Artists willing to starve more?

For those of you that print your art, what kind of paper do you prefer?

I’ve been doing digital art for a long time, and I always got my art printed at school. But I have my own printer now so I can choose the type of paper I use.

I always preferred matte paper, but I was talking to a friend a couple days ago about artist alley(since I’m considering selling my prints more) who said glossy paper was more “standard” and that’s what I should be using. What do you guys think? It’s been on my mind for a few months now ever since I got the printer, lol.

Can an undocumented artist get gallery representation?

I have a relative who makes really amazing artwork which I showed to one of my clients who is an art collector. She was extremely impressed and asked for photos to show to a friend who is a gallerist. In short, my client is enthused enough for the artwork to find my relative representation. She does not know the details of my relative’s legal status.

My relative works as an independent contractor, so tax-wise, selling their work has never been an issue, but I’m concerned about how this may affect a contract with an agent. I guess we will find out once we get in contact with the gallerist but I haven’t been able to find much info on this online to help point us in a direction of what to expect.

Pricing for a VR Job

Hey Guys,

Need some advice for pricing a job for a client involved in VR:

A client reached out to me wanting to get one of my existing 3D model environments converted into stereoscopic format so it can be viewed in VR for their marketing purposes. They are not requiring me to produce any new 3D models or do any 3D modelling, nor do they want the 3D file. They just want a VR version of this environment that I have already created (it was a 3D model I created a while ago for personal reasons, not for commercial reasons).

So how much should I charge them for the VR video?

A bit of context of the 3D environment: It is a dystopian/cyberpunk style landscape. The quality of of the 3D render environment is semi-photorealistic.

Pricing help for oil paintings?

For example, a wildlife/floral and pet portrait: https://imgur.com/a/DBFcMlO
I'm getting to a point where I'm liking where my art is heading, but I'm horrible at pricing. I live in a lower income area so I think I tend to undercharge. What do these two look like they might cost roughly? The first being an original and the 2nd being a commission example. The rabbit is 9x12" and was painted in layers over the course of several weeks. I work small so I really don't want to base it off of pricing by square inch. Any help appreciated.

Pinback parts and using different machines

The three main companies i work and purchase from are VEVOR, TECRE and now Chibuttons. To what extent can the pinback parts be swapped amongst the machines i.e, can Vevor pinbacks be used in Tecre and chibutton machines? Or do all the machines have specific suppliers for their brand? I'd experiment but i don't have any of the required supplies and i want to make sure i make the right purchase.

Emergency, need help setting up.

Family hit a financial fuck up and we don't have the money to buy our chicken feed right now. I've never done commissions before, do I just send a link to my Paypal??? I hate that there's no easy to follow guide to help people get set up for this. Already have prices etc figured out. Its just the actual getting paid part I don't understand.

Ebay selling experience

I have zero luck selling my art on Etsy. Not even a single view on my listings. But on Ebay i am able to make sales even though it’s not generally seen as an art platform.

I am giving up on etsy and focusing on ebay. It can be demoralizing never making sales and if my art sells on ebay that tells me the problem is etsy and not my art.

Just a heads up to anyone who hasn’t tried using ebay to sell art.

I just did a major update to my website. Can you guys check it out? I need feedback on it.

Hey there! I've posted asking for feedback here quite a few times regarding my website and I finally had the time to add "more of my art to it" as people have suggested.
Here it is now: https://www.tinybard.art
Here's what it looked like before: https://imgur.com/a/wmJaRzc
Any sort of feedback is very much appreciated! It takes so long to add the minor of updates to this thing, so I'm already happy if you just take a couple seconds to look at it.

Has anyone been a vendor at Vintage Market Days?

I'm looking at being a vendor at a Vintage Market Days event, specifically in Knoxville. Wondering if anyone here has had experience with that particular event and could share their thoughts. Tbh I'm a little intimidated by the entry fee ($300).

I know it's a big event but this would only be my second festival/event. My first one was a $40 entry fee so slightly less intimidating if I didn't sell much! I sell prints of my original artwork plus greeting cards, postcards, etc.

Thanks!

How do I price my art? [Monday Megathread]

This megathread is dedicated to "how much should I charge?" type questions. Any posts of this nature outside of this thread will be removed. Please provide enough information for others to help you. here are some examples of what you could provide:

A link to at least 1 example piece of work or a commissions sheet.

Product type: (eg. Commission)

Target audience: (eg. Young people who like fantasy art)

Where you are based: (eg. USA)

Where you intend to sell: (eg. Conventions in USA and online)

How long it takes you to make: (eg: 10 hours)

Cost of sales: (eg. £20 on paint per painting)

Is this a one off piece, something you will make multiple copies of, or something a client will make multiple copies of: (eg. The client is turning it into a t-shirt and they will print 50.)

Everyone else can then reply to your top level comment with their advice or estimates for pricing.

If you post a top level comment, please try to leave feedback on somebody else’s to help them as well. It's okay if you aren't 100% certain, any information you give is helpful.

Instagram experiments

Over the last month I have tried a few tips and tricks that people will tell you is the sure fire way to increase your growth and get more customers. Here’s a list of a few of them and the outcomes.

“Removing bot accounts from your followers”

So this I guess is an obvious one, remove the accounts that don’t interact with you or are dead accounts.

Tried this and posted as normal for a week, I received one new follower that week. So I removed about 5 spam accounts and about 10 dead accounts. And gained one back. Yay

“Interact with accounts before and after you post”

This is to fool the algorithm into thinking that you are somehow popular and people should interact with your new post.

Tried that and yep it makes no difference. Well ok it did, I get to see all the people that I interacted with come up first on my feed.

“Your account is old, set up a new account”

This one made a bit of sense to me, maybe after so long Instagram just stops pushing your account out there. So I kept my original account and set up a new one, I uploaded three reels. One of which did really well on my normal account. I tried two with different hashtags and one without any hashtags.

I gained one follower on that new account. And that was someone that followed me on my normal acccount. So I gained nothing, no natural growth, no sudden burst of new fans. Nothing

“Use trending audio”

Yep tried that. Got a reel that has done well before and re uploaded it on my new account, but this time with trending audio.

Original account 48k views New account 200 views

Basically what I’m getting at here is that nobody has a magic fix to gain followers or get more interaction. Out of 3k followers, I will get likes from about 100 of them, and then maybe 10 of them will actually interact with me. Which is fine. I’m ok with that, until my brain tells me that my art is rubbish and that’s the reason nobody likes me.

Greeting card marketplaces

Hi! This might sound like a weird question. I want to join a greeting card marketplace, but those I find are based in specific countries, like Thortful in the UK. I'm based in the Netherlands. Does it matter at all? I can't seem to find a marketplace like this in NL so I'm thinking of just using Thortful anyway

Sales Tax

So my husband and I sold at our first ever pop-up market a couple weeks ago. I tend to overthink a LOT…and have a really hard time understanding taxes. So we registered to collect sales tax. I really really really really regret this, because my friend who does markets regularly said she’s always just set the sales tax amount aside and files everything with annual income taxes. I wish I had stopped there and just did that too, because now I’m scared I’m really on the IRS’s radar. Obviously we’re not trying to hide anything; I’m just terrified of fucking something up somehow and getting in trouble. I paid the minuscule amount of sales tax we owed, and then sent a letter notifying them of our “business” closure(I don’t even feel comfortable calling ourselves business, we’re just very small artists selling our stuff on the side with no actual “business location”but ik we’d technically still be considered a business ig for getting paid). I hadn’t received any “confirmation” of our closure because I guess they don’t need to send you anything, and after a google search realized the FEINs are permanent. So I mean, I guess that’s fine if we decided to get serious again. But we weren’t crazy about the market anyway so I don’t see us doing them often if at all anymore. Can someone please just tell me everything will be okay and I’m overthinking 😭 I just regret this so much, anything tax related gives me such a headache
