I have to admit that I got this Blu Ray because I love Cherami Leigh’s voice work (especially as Lucy from Fairy Tail) and wanted to check out other anime that she worked on, and this happened to be one of them.
Before this, I only had Strike Witches: The Movie. Looking forward to getting more of these Strike Witches Blu Rays…
I finally picked up the hologram copy of 1.11 in a small bundle from my friend and that made me so happy since I always wanted that one in a while since it’s been 3 years watching the whole rebuilds but I’m missing the 3rd part but that’s coming soon
Is the Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World LE worth it as a blind buy? Or should I stick with the standard? I know I will like the show because it is done by my favorite animation studio plus I'm a sucker for romance and romcoms. I would just get the standard however the cheapest I've found for both the standard and LE is on amazon. I'm afraid if I buy the standard off of amazon it wont come with the slipcover which I'm a bit of a stickler for whereas if I buy the LE I know it will come with it. However i want to know if the other stuff it comes with justifies the additional price.
The title is kinda complete: it's time for me to buy Evangelion. I'm torn between the platinum (dvd) and the black box limited edition (blu ray). I don't know much about the differences betweern the two editions, I only know that generally speaking blu ray > dvd, but being kind of a pricey treat I'd like to choose with cognition.
Crunchyroll would monetise the colour orange if they could.
Just curious. Every so often I will upgrade something. Like when I got the bluray box set of Cowboy Bebop to replace my old Remix DVDs. It was kindof on a whim, and half my logic was just me trying to save shelf space. A LOT of my older DVD releases I've just decided to leave as they are, though. A part of me feels like this is appropriate, because many of those shows ARE older, so it's not really that big a deal to me to watch them in that older format. I shit you not, when I came home from school as a kid to watch DBZ, it was on a dinky little black and white tv that sat on my clothes dresser. I don't want to go THAT far back in quality, but having my collection of standard def DVDs is good enough for my needs in regards to that show, ya know? Even movies, like Perfect Blue, where THEORETICALLY I feel like a better image quality would enhance the experience... idk, it just feels like it was made of that era, so it's fine to just watch it as it was.
Plus, sometimes you get releases that just seem to never improve, like Ghost in the Shell. I still have my old Special Edition DVD release, and it's fantastic. GRANTED, there's a 4K/BR release that apparently dropped a few years ago, and I haven't actually looked in to that, but I know most releases that came after the one I have were otherwise kinda crap, so... I just never bothered.
And I have COUNTLESS other shows and movies that I've just internally decided to not worry about upgrading, unless I specifically hear people say there's a significant increase in quality (this is the reason I recently decided to get the bluray for Memories, as I'd heard the picture quality is a BIG improvement). idk, I think my logic makes sense, but deep down I also believe there's an element of just not wanting to spend money to double-dip on all this shit, ya know? Sometimes a BR release is known to be better, but it's just not a big enough difference to make me want to spend money AGAIN.
So I'm curious how other people tackle this "issue". If you started out with DVDs and have seen a lot of your favorite shows get upgrades by way of bluray, do you feel tempted to replace your original copies? Or do you just say 'nah' and feel happy with your original? I'm mostly pretty solid in my stance, but at times I waver a little and think, "Okay but... what if I DID get the blurays for Samurai Champloo, those would look pretty sick, right?!" There is a little bit of a back and forth in my head that can be kindof annoying at times :p
Actually just finished watching Zom 100 and it's a fun time!
Got 86 and that's what I'm watching next.
Held off watching Arcane on Netflix hoping for a physical release. Thank God Gkids picked it up especially on 4k!
For example, times where you prefer the older translation, or the older version has features that the modern release lacks? Or sometimes even just something barely tangible?
Some cases I've run into:
Ranma 1/2 - I actually find the old Viz DVDs better than the blurays in some ways, most notably the subtitle font and stylings and how it always translates the signs. There's some things that were translated on the DVDs but aren't on the blurays (like that part in one of the OVAs where Genma makes a raft out of all the signs he's ever pulled during the TV series).
Devil Hunter Yohko - I recall some of the translation being changed between the VHS and DVD (subtitled) and the trend was the VHS translation felt more "human" while the DVD was more stiff and formal.
Dirty Pair - This is an odd case. Someone showed me footage of the Flight 005 Conspiracy movie from a bluray, and... I just hated the look of it. It was too "clean." It sent me screaming back to my ADV DVD release of the movie, with all the film grain intact.
Pet Shop of Horrors - The Urban Vision DVD has special features such as commentaries which I don't think are on the bluray release.
There's also a lot of times where I like to get an older release just because I want to have all the vintage commercials and advertisements that remind me of when I used to go to Suncoast and remind me of what all would have been available back when I was really into anime.
Anyway, has anyone else here ever run into comparable cases?
I only ordered one but ok...
I forgot the pic with the first post.
In case you didn't know, when RightStuf got replaced sith the CR store, one of rhe dumb things they did was take away the option to order out of stock items. Well it looks like they brought it back. Why they didn't do this from the beginning is beyond me.
Sorry if these types of posts aren’t allowed. I’ve been looking to own the Mushishi anime physically (as the manga is near $1000) and Funimation licensed the first season, but for some reason the only English release that exists of season 2 is from Australia. I went to look on eBay for listings from Australia but I haven’t come across any and no sold listings either. There are a few in hand pictures of the DVD so it’s not like it never released but I was curious if anyone has ever seen a copy sell anywhere
I wanna delete my twitter cause I just don’t like social media anymore. Just wondering what other sites to follow for news such as upcoming releases or such.
Thanks
Just dropped now if anyone is interested
