Hi everyone! I’m an actor from a Toronto. I’d love to find creative collaborators to make meaningful films
I’m a girl working in a new role and I’m crazy attracted to my co-star. To the point I blush like a teenager when we have to act intimate. Actually I blush all the time. I’m trying to be as professional as I can. How do I snap out of this and just act rather than actually swoon for real 😳🤣 🙈
So, today i had this callback via zoom. I totally flunked this callback, nobody and their mother could convince me otherwise, but somehow I booked the role, the only possible explanation to why they cast me was because they really really liked my self tape and said they knew I was the one for the role just from the self tape, but now even though i got the job I’m feeling like a complete fraud because how awful my callback was, is this normal?
How did you get signed to those huge agencies? And since you've been a client how have things changed in your career for you in terms of auditions, connections, ect? Do tell...
I’m curious for people in auditions do you guys use a foldable backdrop if so any good Amazon recommendations? I would like to find something that I can use for my auditions mainly easy to set up and tear down?
Hi! I’m 16, and I’ve always wanted to be an actress.
No, it’s not for money or fame. I genuinely have a passion for it. I’ve always wanted to act but as soon as I hit highschool I was too embarrassed and ashamed to do school musicals. I did join a theater class and I loved it more than anything.
That being said, is it even feasible to be an actress? It’s something i’ve always dreamed about, and i’ve always wanted it. My friends have made fun of me and scoffed when I’ve mentioned this. Is it really just a pipe dream?
I'm working on something in Vancouver for about a month starting mid April, but I don't have a passport. Production hasn't mentioned anything yet, but I'm going in on Monday to get an expedited passport. Has anyone ever ran into a situation where they needed one really fast and what did you do? The expedited passport should get here by like early March but it's a little stressful.
I recently moved to LA, and am actively searching for representation across the board. It seems like a really great way to knock out all the cold submissions at once, which is a huge draw. Anyone have success with the service? Do you recommend? Thanks!
Any help is greatly appreciated!
So I HAD a professional name and a legal name with SAG. I decided a day ago to drop the Stage Name and just use my Legal Name - I updated it with SAG AFTRA, same Member ID.
Well, I just remembered I have payment for a Sag job still due and of course I did the job under my stage. My member ID was tied to that previous stage name. (I signed the tax forms etc under my legal name)
Will my payment be delayed or will this cause confusion??
Should I switch my professional name with SAG back to what it was so it corresponds to the commercial job I just worked a week ago?
help. (I clearly didn't think this one through)
As the title suggests, had an audition at Juilliard. Didn’t get called back but someone I met there did, and if anyone deserved it, it’s that guy. Out of the maybe 150+ who auditioned around my time, only 2 got called back. Am I gonna stop? Nah. Maybe I’ll stop with Juilliard since it was never really a thing I wanted nor cared for but I’m absolutely not gonna stop auditioning and acting and giving it my all. I still feel extremely hurt but ig that just shows that I really do care about my acting and want to accomplish more? I dunno.
Just wanted to unload ts somewhere.
Any San Diego actors with reps in LA?……would you move to LA at this time or is self tapes the best way to go? I know the drive is quite long but do you do most of your auditions now on self tape or is in person becoming more frequent?….I live in North County and love it here and just seeking what to do…Thanks
If anyone has suggestions for the following, I'd appreciate it.
I'm looking for scenes with older male characters 40-60, and younger female characters 30-40.
Thanks.
Hi all. My friends from university and I are looking for a summer program/intensive in either the Philadelphia or NYC area. What programs would you recommend? Looking for something that’s 1 or 2 weeks, good price, good quality. But I have no idea where to start
Hey guys, so I have an audition where I’m talking on the phone in both scenes. I’ve heard coaches say to not act like you’re talking on the phone but to approach it as a regular scene where you’re talking to the other character directly. What are your thoughts on this? How would you approach an audition like this? Thanks.
Hi, I’m a 24 year old actor in Toronto and with the threat of tariffs looming, and a trade war starting, how screwed are Canadians in the film industry?
Obviously, I assume it’s not looking good. I know it’s all just theories for now, but it feels like it could kill our entertainment industry as it relies heavily on the US.
I'm sure some here can relate.
I've been seeing a LOT of bad information offered on this sub about what actors can and cannot write off. Usually someone passes along their personal experience of paying their taxes as a catch-all that applies to all actors the same way, which is not how it works; or, they've been given bad tax advice, even by a tax professional, whose error is often due to not being experienced with actors specifically.
The tax code in the US went through major changes in 2017, much for the benefit of higher income individuals and corporations, and in some instances at the expense of union members. In many cases, what used to regularly be considered an acceptable itemized deduction for an individual actor can now only benefit those holding a loan-out company. Often, LLC's are no longer enough, and you have to incorporate BEFORE you sign a contract. Some states' tax laws resemble the pre-2017 Federal, but not all of them.
So much of correctly filing your taxes depends on how much you made, where you earned it, how you were paid, your union status, how much you made as an actor in previous years, etc. In 2018 I acted in an American union commercial shot in Toronto and two separate accountants who were not specifically experienced with actors insisted a treaty between the US and Canada sheltered me from paying federal taxes to both countries, but eventually an entertainment accountant correctly advised me that the treaty had a few exceptions, one being actors. I was still able to claim some foreign tax credits but it was complicated and required expertise way above my skillset. Since it's been a few years since last being paid from this spot, for all I know, the treaty may have changed, been amended, or dissolved.
What worked for one actor one year may not work for another the next. If your expenses exceeded the standard deduction in 2024, don't get advice here or even a tax sub, consult a qualified professional. IMO that's the only safe tax advice you will get here.
I'm wondering if anyone out there has experience with Gary Reischman former agent at GVA and current manager at Citizen Skull? Anything you wish to share would be appreciated.
I get very stressed if I'm not being productive! What can I do (at home) when I'm not out working a gig. Not reading plays or looking for more gigs as I already do these !
Redditors who’ve applied to Juilliard Drama, what was the prescreening like ? Was it one self tape or was it all 4 monologues, were there rules you had to follow, was it online ? Did you make it through ? What advice would you give to the people who want to apply too ?
Every time the makeup department does my makeup, I break out in acne the next day. I’m not sure what’s causing it, whether it’s the brushes or if it’s the makeup but it’s brands I’d use myself (Mac is one of them). But like I’ll use Mac’s face and body, and they’ll use the powder or their pro palette. There’s obviously other brands they’re using as well, I’m just using Mac as one example.
Is it out of the question to make a little kit for myself with brushes and makeup and ask them to use it instead? There’s definitely other powders that I use daily that don’t cause me to break out (Laura Mercier, Natasha denona, neither of which drug store brands).
Even yesterday they asked me to come in full makeup, and the makeup dept just touched me up and boom 3 pimples today. I don’t want to offend them, they do a great job and they know what they’re doing,
Hello, I'm reading "The power of the actor" by Ivana Chubbuck at the moment and I really enjoy this book because she gives examples in movies and in theater, but I am struggling with the kind of objectives she gives "to find love", "to get power", I get it but I feel, there are not really precise. And I remember that in Stanislavski's method, he said that the objectives need to be verbs. Actions. What do you think ? And Did you like this method? Thanks for reading
Hello! I was recently signed within the last few weeks and got an avail check for a commercial, ended up being able to audition. However after submitting my audition, a non avoidable and uncommon work situation occurred resulting in my availability for the wardrobe dates now no longer being valid. I obviously haven’t even booked the role yet, but I don’t want to wait and in the scenario that I do, go back on my word. It should also be noted that this is for a pretty big casting director in my region. I am in a region that realistically most of the talent with the agency have 9-5s.
I was planning on emailing my agency today/tomorrow explaining the situation. Is there any reason I shouldn’t do this? What would you do?
Overall question: how does you accomplish "less is more" in your acting without the performance becoming boring?
Context: I recently shot a film and when I showed it to someone they said it wasn't bad but at certain parts it seemed like I was doing too much. Based on the context of the scene it seems maybe I made the objective too urgent so it came off "bigger" than it needed to. Fast forward to class and I specifically am trying to work on less is more. I've seen a bunch of actors say "do less. Do less. Do less" etc. I do a scene last week and my coach says it almost put him to sleep. Looks like I successfully did less but so much so that it was boring.
How does you accomplish less is more and subtelty without losing emotional depth in a scene?
I'm an 18 year old senior in high school who's interested in pursuing a master's in acting after undergrad, but I'm nervous about whether or not my lateral lisp, which makes me produce a "sh" sound when pronouncing the letter S, would impede that. This insecurity stems from me seeing so little people with speech issues on stage or screen.
I worry that there are a couple companies that continue to send to my old address despite updating my SAG residuals address.
So many actors out there have a fake name because it sounds better. Like Eric Bishop changing his name to Jamie Foxx. Or from Neta-Lee Herslag to Natalie Portman. From Mark Sinclair to Vin Diesel, etc etc.
I don’t think “Isaiah Colon” is very good. I like Isaiah. & I’m not ashamed of my family or anything but… “colon”. I’m sure you guys are reading that like “Co-Lyn”, the thing that’s part of the digestive system. It’s actually Colon like “cologne”.
See what I mean tho? It’s not good either way. Im either a LITERAL asshole, or I smell good. Either way, I don’t like it. How can I find a good name?
Edit: it’s Colón. The accent is there. I just didn’t write it cause I normally don’t when I’m typing it out. Most documents of me don’t put the accent.
im struggling to pick a stage name.. they're all available but idk which one sounds the best: sophie lynn sophie sen sophie faye sophie faye sen
