All things musical and theatrical, when combined.

so for context, I've been doing performing arts since I was very young. I've always been super musical, I've trained classically in clarinet and learnt some piano and a bit of classical conducting too. I did numerous theatre groups, choirs, musical theatre groups, and dance clubs, although I have never been formally trained in singing or dance. I also took some acting exams so that's defo my strongest suit. performing (music and drama) is something I have so so much passion and love for, it's all I want to do, and I know it's what I'm meant to do.
a few years ago I discovered I have a genetic disorder when it became disabling and gave me multiple other health conditions too. currently I participate in a local community theatre as much as I can (which isn't much unfortunately) and watch plays, musicals, and live music as much as I can too. I spend literally all of my money for non-essentials on it.
I can no longer play clarinet due to my condition, and am currently on pause for singing lessons due to vocal issues (although will restart that asap). I cannot dance safely at all right now either. The question, does anyone have any tips or ideas for things I can do to improve? the goal is that if I ever get better, I want to go into auditions and wow people. I want people to go 'woah, where has she been all this time? we have to cast her!'. I don't want to wait till I get better to work towards my dreams, even if there's a limited amount of things I can do now.
So I have a university audition coming up in about 2 weeks, but I am struggling to find 2 contrasting musical songs that are in the alto range, and I am also not trying not to do wicked as that is just all the talk right now, thank you all for your help.
How does a dance audition where yiu've had to prepare a minute or so's worth of material, do you need to also supply music, how does that work, would it be a track or sheet music with an accompanist? Its one thing that's put me off of auditioning for some drama schools
hi i'm an eighth grader auditioning for my middle school musical production of newsies jr. i'm auditioning for the role of katherine and will be singing "watch what happens" like the rest of the people auditioning for the role (we don't choose our own audition songs). some tips for my audition would be great and appreciated! i really want to stand out and give off that kara lindsay katherine energy.
hi! i’m a dancer but i’ve done a few musicals in the past and i have really enjoyed being in them. so im going to be filming a self tape for a one week theatre intensive this summer. i’m not a great singer, but the music director at my dance studio said i’m an alto since i couldn’t really hit the high notes when she was trying to find my voice part. again, im a dancer first so although i have some knowledge of different musicals, i’ve unfortunately only seen one broadway show. anyways, if anyone could recommend some popular alto musical theatre songs please do!!
have a good day/night everyone!
Im pretty late into the whole musical theatre thing as in i only started taking classes this year. As an international student whos in 10th(?) grade rn (for the americans) could any alumnis who took musical theatre programmes in college give a quick rundown on their schools?
Ive been eyeing AMDA, Harvard(theatre), NYU, Ithaca and notre dame
Honestly all ive heard from amda, ithaca and nyu are horror stories mostly about amda not being credited and all three schools being unfriendly towards POC or LGBTQ+ students
meanwhile harvard and notre dame arent really known for their theatre so could use some help!!
Can someone tell me what key the song “Somebody, Somewhere” is in when Sophie Hayden sings it? I’m desperate!!! (I know its lower than the original key but I don’t know what key it is)
I do realize Redwood is in previews
i’m auditioning for willy wonka as wonka himself soon. does anyone have monologue ideas? please i’m desperate :) thanks!
Hey everyone,
I’m currently trying to figure out my next step and would love some advice. I’ve been recalled for schools like Mountview and Italia Conti but unfortunately wasn’t successful this year. I’ve been offered a place at The Brighton Academy, but I’m unsure whether it’s the right choice or if I should take a gap year and reapply to other drama schools.
Does anyone have any experience with Brighton Academy? Is it a good training programme, and do graduates go on to have strong careers? Or would I be better off taking a year to gain more experience and try again for some of the bigger schools?
Any insight would be really appreciated! Thanks in advance.
the job I work has me performing five 10 minute shows a day onstage, and I typically have to reapply lip gloss between shows. I don’t love matte lipstick as it dries my lips out. I also like a more natural look with lips, so i’m looking for a product similar to a lip gloss / tint that stays on really well, and will last me through multiple shows where I am talking and dancing through the whole thing. anyone have any recommendations?
That's it! I'm supposed to pick a one-minute-long piece from one of the songs she sings. I was thinking of the last part in Adelaide's Lament, "When they get on the train for Niagra...." to the end. But is it eye (or ear) catching enough from the beginning for an audition?
I also like anything from Take Back Your Mink but wasn't sure what would be the best selection from any of her songs.
Thanks!
So my last audition was back in 2019 and I decided that I want to get back into it as I have more time on my hands. I have prepared 'I could have danced all night' from my fair lady and 'Suddenly Seymour' as a solo from Little shop of horrors. I am a mezzo soprano with a good belt but I love my head voice so I truly believe I chose the perfect songs. I guess I'm just looking for reassurance since it's been so long. I appreciate it
Hi all! F18 here :) My high school theater Director recently asked me to be the choreographer for our high school musical. I’m the most experienced dancer out of anyone in our club, so I accepted. We’ve had plenty of conversations about making the combination, simple and easy to learn because almost no one in our theater troupe has any dance experience.
All of this is fine and dandy, except I don’t know how to bring up to my director that I can’t make the time to teach people the dances over and over again after they’ve missed days of rehearsal. Our troupe can be very frustrating at points because we have a lot of people that will no call, no show to rehearsals.
I want to include everyone as much as possible, but if we have a large cast, there will be very few days where everybody will show up.
I don’t want to seem rude or like I’m trying to exclude people from participating in the show, but I also have conflicts of my own and final exams coming up. In hindsight, I have no problem staying a day after to teach a few people that dance combination that they missed, but I want there to be a policy in place. For example, if you miss three days of dance rehearsal, you’re cut from the song.
I exclude the opening and closing number from this, because I do want everyone to have a great time and feel included, but I really cannot waste everybody’s time by teaching the dances over and over again.
I just like some help kind of reevaluating my feelings to this and if they’re even valid? I want everybody to have a great time and be involved in as many dances as they’d like, but everybody also has their own schedules that they need to abide by and I want my time to be respected as a choreographer just as much as our theater teachers is.
Also, if anybody has recommendations on how to bring this up to my theater teacher, that would be awesome, lol!
Hello!! My local theatre is holding auditions for Carrie, and I was wanting to try out! I’ve done theatre in the past, but never at this location. I was hoping to try out for Carrie, but I wasn’t sure what song would be good for auditions. Any help is great!!! Even advice with auditioning for Carrie in general is great!! Thank you!!
(Apologies for any odd wording)
Hey guys
Check out new musical theatre release out today :)
I have gotten in person auditions for a few drama schools where I applied for musical theatre, and all of them require a legit (pre 1965) song. I am a true alto and am closer to a high tenor. Due to this all the 'alto' songs that have been suggested to me are all still a bit too high for me to do confidently. I have been considering doing 'She Loves Me' from she loves me but im not sure whether I can do a tenor song, since the only specification is that it is in original key. Which is why im looking for traditionally 'female' songs to bring with me just incase they dont want me to perform a tenor song.
Any help will be great! (For further reference an alto song that I can sing comfortable is When Youre Good To Mama)
Hello, I'm auditioning for a show called the second hurricane. It's a youth opera and they asked for 2 contrasting classical and/or operatic 32 bar cuts. I want to audition, but struggling to find songs. If there are any suggestions, please let me know! Thank you. :)
I’m preparing for an audition that requires two contrasting songs (which is common here from what I’ve seen) and was wondering if anyone has any input. My first choice is Flowers from Hadestown since I’m confident in my execution of it, and I’ve been thinking about doing Something’s Coming from West Side Story as the other one, but I’m not sure if that’s enough contrast or if it’s a smart choice regardless. I prefer songs that sit in a lower range. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks :)
Hi! I have two tickets for the closing night of the current cast Hadestown on west end, and sadly I cannot attend. If anyone is interested on buying them, please contact me via a message (:
Hello! I recently started voice lessons with a voice teacher who teaches the bel canto technique. Although he seems like a good teacher, I'm not sure if bel canto is what I want to be trained in. It forms a very resonant, round, heavy, and formal sound which I'm not sure I like. If I am looking to do MT further in life, should I be looking for a different teacher who can teach me other vocal techniques?
I am about to audition for a musical at my high school and I was wondering what you guys think about having full blocking for the song I'm doing. I don’t want to just park and bark, but I’m not sure if I should treat it like a full scene either. Thoughts?
I want to sing this duet for my senior recital next year, and I can’t seem to find music for it anywhere! As far as I can tell it isn’t in any of the SMTA duet books, it’s not on music notes, it’s not even in my book of songs from The Secret Garden. I guess my last resort is buying a full vocal score, but those are more expensive than I’d like. Can anyone recommend any other resources for me?
For my exam I need to pick a song that I can link to the theme 'joint effort' it's only me who will be singing and I'm struggling for options does anyone have any suggestions?
I’m auditioning for Serenade: Summer Nights of Swing and song. If you don’t know it’s like Rodgers and Hammersteins rearranged into jazz style. I’ve picked a ballad but need help finding something uptempo, preferably with some scatting opportunities and can show off high tenor in that style.
I want to sing “If You Hadn’t But You Did” from Two On The Aisle. HOWEVER I can only find sheet music for the original song! I want to do the slightly varied Kristin Chenoweth version! I thought I found it on London Arrangements but it’s only the track! I’m sure sheet music for Chenoweth’s rendition exists but I can’t find it. Please if anyone knows where to get Kristin Chenoweth’s version please let me know!
I’m not a great singer so I’m trying to pull a song that’s the most comfortable for me. I’m leaning towards Superboy and the Invisible Girl as it sits right in my range and doesn’t have any extended notes. The musical is The Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, so it’s a modern musical but it has a classic sound and the audition breakdown asks for audition cuts to show ‘classic technique’.
I was in choir in school and that’s the extent of my training. I think I’m a mezzo?
