Having a hard time transitioning clients cuz coworkers want to play and pick up client

So I work in a clinic and I don’t like it when my coworkers interfere and play with my client whenever they see my client and I at the table or whenever they see us walking to the classroom . I think it’s selfish especially when I finally get my client that typically has a hard time transitioning to transition easily like those coworkers have had the client before so I get why they act that way but when they just pick my client up or carry them, it makes me frustrated because then my client doesn’t want to leave and transitioning the client becomes hard again. I don’t mind if my coworker picks up my client and acts all Playful when they see my client outside or during play time. I know I should tell my coworker this but I thought it’s common sense also I’m not close with my coworkers and I feel like there’s already weird tension between me and them for reasons unknown to me but am I right to feel this way or not ?

My job said I used the bathroom too much

I was pulled into a meeting about attendance, dress code and bathroom usages.

My son has been sick and I had to call out but ALWAYS provided a doctor's note. They attempted to say my pants were yoga pants, I told her to touch them and she realized that they were not yoga pants she then went on to say well they aren't 100% cotton so they are outta dress code. Ever since this new BCBA started they have been on my ssa about my clothes. But ANYONE else that's not is dress code it's not an issue ( and I know because I ask them if they been told they are outta dress code and they all say no) I was having the worst morning of my life so I signed the warning and was like okay is that it ? Then they went on to say we notice you take a lot of bathroom breaks is there a medical reason, are you making phone calls in the restroom room. I told them I pee when I'm in the bathroom. If I need to take a phone call I will, but if I go to the bathroom I'm using it. I feel like that's illegal for them to ask me that. I'm going to reach out to HR and let them know how uncomfortable it made me feel.

Parent Led Data

How do you guys keep track of data when it comes to parent led cases? I’m having trouble finding a paper data sheet that is simple enough for parents with clear instructions. Any suggestion?

question!

what do you say when a child apologizes for an aggressive behavior? i don’t wanna say “it’s okay” because I feel like that can somewhat reinforce it. Is “thank you for apologizing” the best option?

ABA classroom

Hi,

My son has recently transitioned from receiving ABA therapy at home to attending an ABA private school.

I have a question regarding the setup of desk sessions in these schools.

In a typical ABA school, do desk sessions take place in a shared room with other students, or does each child have an individual room with their tutor? I understand that group and clàss activities are conducted in a shared space, but is this also the case for one-on-one desk time with a tutor?

Where I live, it appears that children share the same room during these sessions. However, this may be challenging for my son, as he struggles with noise from other children.

Thank you!

Please help, Masters in special ed with concentration in ABA?

I’m currently a senior in an undergrad psychology program. I’m very much at a loss of what to do with my career, but I really think I’d enjoy working with kids. I’m planning to apply to a masters in special education with a concentration in ABA. Is it worth it? Is this job fulfilling? Is the pay decent or livable at least? And are there positions where one can work with early intervention ages such as 0-3?

Posting injuries online: Ethical? Or Non-ethical? (I did research)

Whether posting injuries online aligns with your personal values is ultimately your decision. Personally, I choose not to share my own injuries publicly out of respect for my own privacy and healing.

However, I believe that those who do post have every right to do so, as it’s their experience and they have autonomy over their own body.

Given the controversy surrounding this topic, I’d like to offer insight into its ethical implications from both legal and regulatory perspectives.

In the BACB ethical compliance code, there are a handful of sections that kinda sorta graze over this topic. However Section-5 Responsibility in Public Statements, subsection 5.02 states “In all public statements, behaviour analysts protect the confidentiality of their clients, supervises, and trainees, except when allowed. They make appropriate efforts to prevent accidental or inadvertent sharing of confidential or identifying information”

According to the U.S Department of Labor Personal Identifying Information (PII) is defined as information: (i) that directly identifies an individual (e.g., name, address, social security number or other identifying number or code, telephone number, email address, etc.) or (ii) by which an agency intends to identify specific individuals in conjunction with other data elements, i.e., indirect identification

The American Psychological Association (APA) defines confidentiality as: a principle of professional ethics requiring providers of mental health care or medical care to limit the disclosure of a patient’s identity, their condition or treatment, and any data entrusted to professionals during assessment, diagnosis, and treatment

Make of this what you will, but to me, this information suggests that sharing your injuries online can be ethical as long as you avoid disclosing any client identifying information or details of their treatment when posting about your experience.

You can say “this is my injury and this is how I feel”

You can’t say, “this is my injury that I got from my 5 year old client at Better Behaviour! ABA company”

I feel like most of you who have been sharing injuries on this sub, have been adhering to your ethical code.

I feel like I can define most of the terms on the BCAT task list. I have started using Quizlet and scored a 91% last night on the aba rocks comprehensive exam, but have taken it multiple times over the last month. What else can I do to study?

I have review with my trainer on Wednesday.

My job just told me

That I am going to get fired if I visit my family for thanksgiving as planned (talked about it with them months ago)

because I have had to call of a couple times due to doctors appointments they would not let me go to as well as illness I did not want to spread

Honestly , I posted before about feeling burnt out and hopeless, so maybe this is a “blessing in disguise” situation , but I honestly feel crushed right now

RBT COMPETENCY ASSESSMENT

How nervous should I be about this? If you’re a bcba what should I prepare for? I’ve taken the checklist line item by line item and defined the terms and given myself examples for shaping, chaining etc. Is there anything else I can do to prepare myself? I’m going in for a training and will have a few shadowing sessions before my assessment. I just want to be extra prepared.

Hours

I was hired to work specifically Full Time, my recruiter informed me, after I went through all of the training and had several shadow sessions, the head BCBA told me they would have me cover some breaks and could possibly use me as a sub. The center is over 30 minutes away. They have me working 90 minutes on 3 days and 30 minutes the other two. How common is this? Will all the companies not have clients? They've hired at least 4 other BTs for FT at this center.

When are targets too general?

Questioning if we should really be running one-step instructions like “stomp” and “stop” when we aren’t taking data on any specific targets. We include all one-step instructions under one “one-step” umbrella. How can you possibly know what is being learned? Or for “wait,” it doesn’t matter if it’s a 2-second or a 20-minute wait, both are recorded the same and not tracked. Am I crazy?

Feeling like a Daycare Teacher

Hi everyone. About 2–3 months ago, I was moved to a different BCBA team, where I now work with early intervention clients (2-6). Their programs are really simple, such as motor imitation, accepting/touching/looking at preferred items, or making independent/prompted requests. They also require bathroom assistance, like changing pull-ups or wiping after a bowel movement.

I’m having a really hard time enjoying my job because of the clients I’m working with. I feel more like a daycare teacher than an RBT, and I think it’s starting to affect the way I conduct services ethically. Does anyone have any advice on how to avoid feeling this way, whether I should request different clients, or if I should consider leaving altogether (I am also severely burnt out lol).

For context, I used to work with later intervention clients (8-10+) on a different team, and I felt like I was being utilized much more effectively then. However, I’m not sure if they would allow me to return to that team, and there are no other clients in the clinic to work with

Edit: For reference I get paid $17.50 an hour and that’s about the average for the ABA companies in my area. Some of them pay even less and I can’t live off of a lower income due to living in a city with high rent

Parent Here - Advice needed

Hi,

My son started ABA therapy later in life due to a late diagnosis. He's been in ABA therapy less than a year, is currently 7 years old and we've seen MAJOR improvements. He was a bit non-verbal mostly due to a delay in speech. He's been receiving speech therapy regularly up until the few months of 1st grade. We asked for a referral from our insurance for outpatient services and we're working on that as our next goal.

However my wife and I feel that ABA has dwindled down in effectiveness if not all out unnecessary with the amount of hours he has to commit too everyday. 2.5 hours 5-7:30pm. He's consistently meeting goals as soon their given to the BA within a week or 2. We've discussed with them reducing hours with no success. Now we're considering canceling ABA all together and focusing entirely on speech given his age. He's also on track to move to special education or general education next school year based on the schools psychological exam.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Desperate for help/advice on interventions

I need advice regarding a client who frequently engages in the behavior of grabbing items and banging them on the floor at a very high rate, to the extent that we’re using partial interval recording to capture it accurately. The intensity of these behaviors is extremely loud, making it disruptive and challenging to manage. Additionally, this behavior often escalates to the client banging on windows and walls, adding further intensity and potential risk. I’m looking for guidance on strategies to help reduce the frequency and intensity of these behaviors in a safe and effective way. The function is attention and automatic. But I have also seen the behavior increase when denied access occurs. He is receiving in home therapy so conducting an FA is not feasible.

a touch of positivity

Ive been an RBT for almost 2 years and I must say, this field has its fair share of trials and tribulations but I love every single one of these kiddos like they’re my own 🥲. It’s something so rewarding about seeing these kids grow and develop new skills! I love seeing kiddos go from non-vocal to vocal especially it just warms my heart sm :). Do you guys have any stories from any of your kids that make you smile?

Professors to Avoid (FIT)

Hi! I start my masters in ABA spring 2025 at FIT… does anyone have professors they took from here that I should avoid or should take to get the most out of this?

Classes are:

  1. Intro to Concepts & Principles of BA
  2. Intro topics in BA
  3. Applied Experience in BA (no choice in this one but any advice would be great for Duncan-Chapman)

Psychedelic Assisted Therapy in ABA

With psychedelic assisted therapy growing and the impact it has on the length of treatment a few sessions of psychedelic assisted therapy can consolidate years of traditional therapy. What innovations can you see come to our field of ABA for autism? It is definitely possible in the future with policy change and along with training to enact the use of micro dosing psychedelic into this therapy model practice. Psilocybin is known to create new neural pathways and neural plasticity in the brain to make behavior change not as resistant & the brain to be more receptive and open to change. Can we see this being something that can be brought to the field of ABA for autism?

First post!

Hi I start as an RBT tomorrow! I’m with Action Behavior Centers. I’m planning on becoming a BCBA as well. I do have a few inquiries

  1. Does any work for this company? Any insights

  2. Any tips for a beginner

  3. My bachelor’s (I’m finishing) is in Special Education. Can I get my master’s in the same field or is it better to get a psychology masters or an ABA master’s to become a BCBA?

Advice for a new supervisor

Hello! I was recently promoted to a midlevel supervisor and given some cases. Everyone keeps telling me how excited they are for me to grow with the role, but I can’t help but feel undeserving.

I’ve been experiencing a lot of imposter syndrome and am frustrated at myself for not feeling like my clinical judgment is developed yet.

Does anyone have advice for how to overcome these feelings?

Interview RBT

I had a virtual interview three days ago (Friday) with Proud Moments ABA. I have no experience in the field but am in a graduate program now to be a BCBA and will be finished in a year. Trying to get a job as a RBT to get experience and hours. As the virtual interview concluded, they asked me to come tour the center on Monday (tomorrow). I thought that was kind of soon to ask me to come see the center. Has anyone else had to do this? What should I expect?

Getting my masters in ABA. I haven’t been picking up the concepts very well or learning them the way I want to. I was wondering if anyone knew of any online BCBA tutors/resources that would be helpful for me?
