Is it possible to become a fighter pilot if diagnosed as not actively having asthma, but having a history of asthma after the age of 12?

I have had asthma for the majority of my life, including after the age of 12, but I am not taking any more medication. If I were to do something such as the Methacholine Challenge Test and pass/any other way of being diagnosed as not actively having asthma, could I have a chance of becoming a fighter pilot/does it largely come down to waivers and what would that process look like?

AFROTC and Anti depressants

Hello I’m 21 years old and will be starting AFROTC as a freshman in the spring semester. I was prescribed a low dose of an anti depressant in 2021 that I took with no knowledge on how much it would affect my career with the Air Force. I have been off of it for about a year now and haven’t felt better mentally. Is this gonna be an issue as I pursue this program. Any info will be appreciated, thanks.

Can pilot selects do STEM ed-delays

Has anyone seen pilot selects do an Ed-Delay for stem degrees NOT under a funded program (like AAD, DAWN, GSP, etc)

AFMAN36-2032. 6.9.2.3.2. States this isnt allowed:

“AFROTC cadets awaiting a regular appointment and classified into rated career fields are only eligible to apply for educational delays to seek an advanced degree in the legal (51JX) or medical (4XXX) academic areas. Upon selection into the medical or law degree program, AFPC/DP2LT withdraws the rated classification.”

Citizenship Requirement Process

I've been doing reading on the process/specific requirements and it indicates that non citizens (for my purpose it will be non-citizen with green card/permanent resident) who join the program and intend to commission will have to obtain their citizenship 1 year after PSP results are announced.

And I believe this will be sometime in the AS300 year early to mid spring semester in which one has to obtain their citizen ship. I plan on starting AFROTC Fall 2025 as AS100 and with that I will become eligible to submit my citizenship application January of my AS300 year which sounds to me is close to 12 months after PSP results come out.

Considering I'm now in my first year of my bachelors, will there be any benefit in starting this spring semester as AS150 (in which I will most likely end up doing 4.5 years because of the above) or should I wait till next year to start as AS100 and do 4 years so I meet the timeline outlined above?

DODMERB/METS help!!!

Need some clarification. I am currently a AS250. I started as Army ROTC in my first semester, then I swapped to Air Force ROTC last semester (2nd semester). Now I am in fall 24 of my 3rd semester. It is field training/ PSP nomination time, but I am worried that I might not get picked up because of my DODMERB. I dislocated my hip in 8th grade, so I got a DQ when I got to Army ROTC. Army approved my waiver this October. Is this not valid for the Air Force? They disqualified me when I joined Air Force (obviously), but does it not transfer from one branch to another? This is causing me to get another doctor's appointment and a whole lot more waiting time. If so, is it even possible to get this approved in time to be considered for a slot? It took so much time for the first one to get approved. I cannot afford to be thrown in the Jan 2026 cycle.

Detachment Culture

Seeking insight on detachment culture nationwide.

TLDR: I entered AFROTC (naively) believing that, as leaders, we could drive cultural change. Now, in a leadership role, I face the harsh reality that our detachment culture remains entrenched in toxicity and dysfunction—persistent throughout my entire tenure. Efforts to address it feel futile.

AS100: Morale events often involved my POC flight commander buying alcohol and socializing with my flight mates, with the end goal of pursuing me. Sexually charged rumors and vile speculations about female cadets, myself included, were and are rampant and normalized.

AS200: After rejecting a male peer, he retaliated by spreading rumors through the detachment, labeling me as “heartless”. To this day, I am disparaged as a cold bitch for breaking his heart.

AS300/400: Social events where alcohol is provided to underage cadets (POC to underage POC and GMC) continues, and blurs the lines between personal and professional conduct. These gatherings become breeding grounds for gossip, further eroding respect for the chain of command and perpetuating a toxic environment.

Every year, I witness the same pattern: young women, fresh out of high school, are heavily pursued by male POC in their direct chain of command. If these young women engage, they’re seen as naive opportunists; if they refuse, they’re cold bitches.

Personally, I’ve existed in this environment by adopting a hard exterior, isolating myself from social interactions to repair a reputation I had no control in crafting. I’ve been pursued beyond the point of non-consent. I’ve been inappropriately touched. I’ve endured backlash for rejecting male peers, subordinates, and superiors. Tidbits of mine and others personal lives have been dissected and speculated upon, all while the culture dismisses this behavior as “just gossip.”

The pervasive boys’ club mentality shields inappropriate behavior, with men defending their peers while exploiting any out-group’s (male and female alike) personal lives for entertainment. My attempts to implement supportive programs for female cadets have been mocked by this large male in-group, reinforcing my sense of helplessness.

This is all I’ve ever known, and I’m leaving for active duty with a chip on my shoulder knowing this will continue in my absence.

  1. Is this normal?
  2. Does this also happen on active duty? Most of all, is there anything that can be done to change it?

Pilots and pilot rejects I got some questions

For the people who did obtain pilot slots this year, what were your metrics?

PCSM PFA GPA

Then people who weren’t selected what were yours? I know this isn’t going to give me any answers in just curious to see what y’all say.

AFOQT Superscoring

For the superscoring meaning, does this mean that it will superscore by whole sections like verbal, academic aptitude and quantative. Or does it mean that if I do good on the math knowlege my first time and the arithmetic reasoning the second time, will my quantitive score be superscored to match.

Should I start spring of freshman year or fall of sophomore year?

I recently became Intrested in joining AFROTC and the university I attend (as a freshman) doesn’t have rotc so I would have to commute to another college to attend. For this reason I am transferring to a school that has it on campus. Is it worth starting afrotc next semester, which would also mean not taking a class for my major, or should I just wait till I transfer to start.

Citing Sources in Background Paper

Hey y'all, I'm writing a BP and need some help. I can't find anything about it on the Tongue and Quill other than BPs "may include references", but I'm not sure how to cite them or where in the paper.

Please let me know where you get your answer from!

FY2026 Class, do you receive an email after you complete both DAF Career surveys?

I did both surveys a few weeks ago, but checking my inbox recently, I only found the receipt for one of the surveys, the initial optional talent one. Do you guys also have receipts for the 2nd, mandatory survey? Or no? Just checking to see if I should be worried or not.

Serve at ROTC Det & get Masters at the same time?

Wondering if I can get assigned to an ROTC det and use the benefit of colocation to get an in-person Master's degree at the same time. Does anyone know if this is possible? I want to say I remember some of my cadre doing this when I was a student but I can't be sure. Thanks!

Does having my parents administer the pfa decrease my chance of being eligible for a scholarship?

I was wondering if having my parents administer the pfa for being eligible for an afrotc scholarship would decrease my chances of getting it since the website says I should have a high school official administer it. My parents aren’t gym officials but they understand basic athletics, and I would be honest of course.

I’m a senior in high school, currently on anxiety meds. If I stop now, when would I be able to get a medical? Would I need to start AFROTC late?

Civil Engineer 32EX and deployment

I really enjoy my field and very much leaning towards this as a profession. There’s not too much on the internet about responsibilities, and I’m curious about if the work is more restoring bases etc or humanitarian. I’m not looking to go red horse route but I do understand I may not have a choice. From what I’ve heard around, we get to pick the base?

If y’all have experiences pls let me know.

Clarifying AFROTC Job Selection

I'm a cadet preparing to submit my job selection preferences and have a question about how the process prioritizes Rated versus Non-Rated Air Force Specialty Codes (AFSCs). Specifically, if I list a Rated AFSC (e.g., Pilot, 11X) as my top choice and a Non-Rated AFSC (e.g., 13N) as my second choice, both of which I'm qualified for, is there a chance I could be assigned the Non-Rated AFSC because it's less competitive or more in demand and not becuase my OM wasn't high enough?

EDIT- I'm referring to the new Talent Questionnaire process. There are no more rated EAs.

How soon can you apply for grad programs after commissioning?

So I’m a bit of an awkward boat. I wasn’t picked up for grad school but I’m applying for Gold Bar Recruiting. If I get selected, would I be able to apply for afit/partner schools programs after my Officer training or would I have to wait until my tour is over?

Worried for PFA

I’m applying for AFROTC HSSP and am taking my PFA dec 6. I’ve been training since September and have made decent improvements since then but I’m still worried it probably won’t be enough. Currently I can do 40 pushups and 45 sit ups but my run time is 15 minutes which still isn’t good. I was running 2-3 days per week but I started getting shin splints about 2 weeks ago which started limiting my training. I’ve never actually run before so I’ve been watching a bunch of videos on getting proper form and such. I still can’t seem to get it down which I assume has been causing the shin splints. I also read that training too hard too quickly can cause it. I know it’s my fault for waiting until the last minute to do anything about it but I’m not really sure how to proceed. If I take the PFA any later I’ll be cutting it pretty close. I think I could barely get a 75 if I really push myself while running but that also seems like I could injure myself. The running is really the main thing holding me back right now.

Shaving waiver

Any idea if a shaving waiver for religious reasons will get me judged by higher ups and hinder my chances on jobs due to judgement of “not looking the part” or is the Air Force more flexible with that?

Contracted

I'm looking over my contracting info and it was my understanding that as a Cadet I don't have a rank other than Cadet so why does the contract say E3 like an A1C? Is this just a way to enter us in the system or something else?

DODMERB DQ'd

About 11 months ago I made a near fatal mistake of going beyond the limit of drinking and going to the hospital for it. Yes, I was a stupid kid and I've taken on that mistake for the betterment of myself. This little stunt resulted in me having multiple meetings with my DET/CC and NCOs to discuss my involvement in ROTC. Since I had notified them within 24 hours and had taken fault of this situation, they decided to let me stay.

While this was all going on, I made note of this in my DODMERB paperwork (Integrity First, and all) and didn't think anything of it since it was an isolated incident and it didn't result in any kind of further medical treatment (psychiatric, counseling, etc). A few months later, I got asked to go to a psychiatrist to evaluate me if I'm mentally healthy for military service. I wasn't worried about this, went to the appointment and even the psychiatrist said "this was a mistake and there's nothing wrong" and went on my way. A few days later, a letter hit my inbox and bam "You've been medically disqualified for having a history of substance related disorders". I was shocked, primarily because I wasn't diagnosed with any disorder and figured if there was anything wrong with me that I would've been informed by the psychiatrist. The letter explains that I can file for a waiver, but I'd prefer to just have a way to clarify that I was not diagnosed with a disorder in order to save time.

Not sure how common this is, I doubt it would be on this platform, but would anyone be able to explain the waiver process if I'm not able to do the option above?

Advice for a high school senior

Looking for advice for my high school senior. He wants to do AFROTC. I want to get honest feedback from people that are much further along in the process and career. He wants to be a pilot; is working on his PPL: good student (1310 SAT, 3.8/4 GPA, APs); good extracurriculars; work experience; clean cut. Good kid (although like every parent I’m tired of the video games lol). We don’t have any pilots in the family so this is completely new and a lot to learn. Been trying to talk to as many friends that know someone that flies. Got into top 141 colleges (ERAU, UND, Auburn, FIT, waiting on Purdue). Any advice? Would you do it all again? Likelihood of getting a flight slot during this long 11-12 year commitment (taking in post-college training)? Better to get degree separate from ROTC and enroll after? Military has always been his interest, and while he thinks he’s fine with travel and being away (I lived in Japan by myself for 2 years so I have some related experience leaving everything), I want to get as much feedback as possible before committing. Please share your story and advice.
