Physics Major

Do you guys have any advice for balancing a physics major and AFROTC, how to keep grades good, etc. I suck at time management

Right now my GPA is a 2.9 which isnt stellar gotta bring it up, wondering if AFROTC will make any considerations for me since I'm doing a tech degree or if having mid gpa no matter how hard your degree is looked down upon

Best max?

People that have been to field training what’s the “best” max to get? I’ve heard that max 2 is potentially the worst and 1 and 4 could be the best? What do you think?

Odd path into ROTC at 30

So odd situation I know.

But I went to college(business) a decade ago and am now early 30s and want to join up. I’ve been in the corporate tech(but not a programmer) world for almost a decade and hate it and don’t have a wive/kids so this is an option and something I always thought of.

I earned about 90 credits and then left for a job in the tech world but the issue is my GPA is bad at 2.2.

So my thoughts/plan are to enlist, finish my degree(drag my GPA up some) while in, and then do ROTC for a masters on the GI bill and hopefully get selected non rated as an officer.

I did really well with the SAT back in the day so I’m not afraid of the GMAT or anything like that to get into a grad program. I’m also in pretty decent shape so don’t think that should be an issue to enlist/do rotc.

More so will the ROTC select me and even give me a chance to get selected assuming I did well in the masters program? Has anyone done anything similar?

Thank you

Edit: Not trying to be a pilot for any age issues

AFOQT Scores

Hey guys I just took my first AFOQT and was wondering if you had any advice for improving my score next time.

To be honest I didn't study much since its my first attempt and Im an As100 so I wasn't too worried about it, just skimmed a study book to get the general idea of what would be on the test

Here were my scores: Pilot 99, CSO 54, ABM 92, Acad Aptitude 59, Verbal 78, Quantitative 44

I'm surprised I got a good score for pilot and ABM to be honest but I'm grateful it means I dont have to retake those parts in the future

I need help with my plans.. Transfer and AFROTC

Hello, I am currently attending a community college and about to finish my first year spring semester. I have been planning to take the AFROTC, which requires 3 years, and I would like to seek advice on whether it is achievable or not.

Plan 1: Through Cross Enrollment, I will be taking the first year of AFROTC at Community College, transferring next fall, and completing the remaining two years at a university.
Plan 2: I will start AFROTC after transferring to university, extend my graduation by one year and graduate in 3 years. (In this case, can I take AS 200A in 3rd grade? If so, can I graduate in 5th grade?)

My realistic situation is that although I am a U.S. citizen, English is not my native language due to spending most of my time abroad, resulting in a lack of proficiency in English communication. If Plan 2 is feasible, I will have time during my time at college to improve my English skills.

If anyone has detailed knowledge about the program, I would appreciate advice on my plans. Additionally, I would be grateful if you could list the things I need to complete by each timeframe. (Such as Summer Field Training, etc.)

If you are nervous about your status in the program, read this

Hello everyone,

Just a 200 with an EA, I know most of you 100's are going to be rising 200's next semester and are probably a little nervous about how you stand within ROTC. You may think that your probably not going to be good enough to get an EA or you think you do not fit in. But please read this if you are feeling a lack of motivation.

Throughout every semester I was ranked bottom third of my class and was always last in performance for everything. I sucked at everything, marching, PT, command/leadership presence, etc. I even had cadre pull me aside and counsel me for various things such as discipline stuff (nothing bad its just that I would not take things serious in a training environment) and other stuff. My midterm feedbacks with cadre were most of the time positive, however I was told due to my standing in my class the chance of me getting selected was very slim and they told me they would offer me a 500 year as it was not looking great for me.

It also doesn't help when your own flight mates tell you that you messed up and need to improve, it is definitely a hit to your self esteem. They were being nice but stern about it which is something I have respect deep respect for them. Come FTP semester and it was interesting. Getting yelled at for simple mistakes that looking back I could easily fixed but I was either lazy/not motivated. The reason for this is because to be honest, I kind of accepted that my chance of getting selected was pretty much not gonna happen due to my class ranking and my cadre's evaluations, and even class's evaluation of me. However I told myself "let them tell you no" and come back as a 500 stronger and better then ever.

Lo and behold when EA's dropped, I was shocked to hear that my name had been pulled and selected, I was in straight disbelief and was thinking my commander was joking with me, but he told me I got an EA. I almost cried hearing the news because I thought that I was gonna have to watch seeing my class move on without me while I was left behind, but somewhere out there, a O6 or other high ranking official looked at my package and said "I see potential in this cadet".

I want everyone reading this to know that even through all my hardships and even cadre saying my chances of getting selected were very slim, I still was noticed and given a chance.

If you are bottom of your class or think your the worst cadet in your flight, I was the feeling how you feel and I still got a slot, I understand also that as quick as this slot was given to me, it can get taken away just as quick.

Please remember that no matter how bad things get, your chances of getting selected are 0% if you quit and walk away now. To all the rising 200's, learn from my mistakes and be the better 200 cadet I was.

I go to community college and but I was wondering if I can still join AFROTC program. I’m 20

I’m going at community college to get my associate and join local flight program. I haven’t started any flying yet. I almost about to finish my GENS. I only took into flight and AVI101. So I still don’t know if aviation is really for me.

I don’t know what to do, I would appreciate any military advice.

Terms to activate CMLA scholarship

AS200 (w/EA) here with a question about the terms in activating the CMLA scholarship: I understand that it is awarded upon successful completion of FT, and can be activated as long as GPA criteria are met. After this semester, I am anticipating a sub-2.5 Term GPA (likely 2.3 - 2.4); however, my cumulative GPA will likely be around 3.0 - 3.1. With this in mind (after completing FT), will I still be able to activate the CMLA scholarship?

DODMERB & Navy Reserves

Currently active duty navy considering transferring to the Navy Reserves for a couple of years for the cheap health care & extra cash while I attend college and enroll into AFROTC. Will being in the Navy Reserves allow me to bypass the DODMERB or is that only for AF Reserve/NG? And if being in the Navy Reserves allows me to bypass DODMERB, what form will I need to get signed?

How can I add more schooling for AFROTC?

I'm going to need to extend my schooling for 3 more years, and so far I have 2 years covered (Master's Degree), so far I cannot extend my degree and will have to consider more options. How shall I tackle this?

AFROTC with Masters program, need school and program suggestions

Hello Everyone,

I am coming from
https://www.reddit.com/r/airforceots/comments/1cghh1c/ots_vs_rotc_for_a_civilian/

The majority consensus on this forum is that if I have to get my masters anyways then I should go and participate in a AFROTC program.

I need help finding such schools, which will allow me to do a Dual masters in 3 years (or slightly longer) while letting me work at my current Job.
I am a Software Engineer, and I do not want to leave my current job because the money from the job is the only source of tuition funding I have.
The AFROTC rules say that I must be a full time student at the University, is there a minimum credit requirement for them or whatever the university considers full time, they will also consider full time.

I am looking for lower credit requirements so that I can balance work responsibilities and Academic/AFROTC responsibilities effectively.

Is anyone on this forum doing such a thing or planning to do such a thing?

My main concern right now is to find a school which will accommodate me.

My Top choice: UIUC just told me that they do not do dual degrees that I am interested in and their standalone MS CS degree takes 5 semesters (at max)

I am just starting my research for Grad schools right now.

I was not able to attend AFROTC in my Undergrad years because I was not a US citizen, I am still not a citizen but by the time I get to Grad school, I will be one, just in case any one wanted to ask.

My Academic stats:

BS in Computer Science, GPA: 3.96, Rochester Institute of Technology

Have not taken GRE and GMAT yet.

Prospective cadet in a little bit of a dilemma…

Hey y’all! The name’s Nathan. This is my very first post among all you fine folks so apologies if I misstepped on some rules.

So, a little bit of backstory here, I’ve had quite the turbulent life for reasons totally out of my control. I’m taking an aerospace engineering major that has spanned two different community colleges due to financial reasons and quite a bit of moving around. My old CC had a crosstown with Det 330 of UMD. I almost got in, but the very unfortunate and sudden thing that forced me to move down to the southwest tip of VA happened, and I had to take a gap year. Now, my current community college is without a crosstown agreement and I may end up joining as a late sophomore or junior upon transfer. So that’s the bad news. Good news is, GPA’s high, and I’m working on a private pilot license.

To brief on what I am aware of, yes, I do realize I need 3 years in the program minimum to commission. Also, from my snooping around here, VTech’s a bit more iffy than say, NC State. The trade off seems to me that you either get a better engineering degree from VTech or a better AFROTC experience at NC.

So here are my other big questions:

• Dream job is test pilot and maaaaaybe USAF astronaut. I love engineering despite how painful it is. Should I go for VTech or NC? Any academic advice perhaps?

• What other major could I take to extend my college time aside from taking it slow with 12 credit hours?

• For someone who’s tended to be a good follower/team guy more than a leader, how do I step up the game? Any good books to go off of?

• How do I prepare for the AS250 life in the span of a year? I’d prefer to stay ahead of the ball before I get hit in the face.

I’ve been aspiring to become a leader in aviation for a long time, and I want to make the most out of what I can get out of the numerous opportunities this program may present. Thanks in advance for the help!

(P.S, don’t mention the F-22 Raptor. You might just summon me like a State Farm agent. Take it from people that I know. Haha)

Detachment Running Competition (LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY!!)

I just finished up my first year of AFROTC and I'm looking to make an impact as a 200 by setting up a regional or national detachment running competition. I plan on it being a large project that requires several cadets from various detachments, but how big the project turns out to be really just depends on the amount of support for it. Gonna need a whole lotta help on this one so if you're interested in being a part of it, comment on this post and I'll get back at you.

TLDR: Detachment Running Competition, Wingmen Needed!!!

IFC Selection

My Det/CC just let me and about half of my det’s rated applicants know that we have been picked up to attend IFC and get flight physicals done. She told us that while it isn’t an official selection, it is good news for us pilot hopefuls.

I wanted to come here and ask if anyone had more specifics on this (fairly) new summer IFC process… did anyone get sent last year, pass, and not get a pilot slot? Does it seem like more people are getting sent this year than last? Is there any special info we should know about this aside from what’s already online from other commissioning sources?

Masters Degree inquiry

Hello. I’m looking for some mentorship/advice. Currently active duty, contemplating separating Aug 13 2024. Recently received my third non-selection for OTS and am looking for options to be a rated USAF officer. I already possess my bachelors degree with Embry-Riddle and wanted to see the likelyhood of doing a graduate ROTC program. Are you able to complete degree requirements online or do they all have to be in person? What the chances of completion are and the overall process? I don’t want to separate, however I can no longer extend my contract so I am at a cross roads of what to do with my career. Any advice or recommendation or welcome, thank you.

Make Em Say No.

AFROTC has provided me some of the best moments, friendships, and opportunities but also has tested my patience, questioned my future, and audited my integrity. In the face of adversity, my advice that mirrors many before me, make them say no.

Through AFROTC I have been around the world, nationally selected for unique PDTs, and had my education paid for. I joined from another ROTC program the day of add/drop my sophomore year because I figured if I wanted to fly, I should probably join the branch with Air in their name. Despite being warned by cadre from both programs that scholarships were very scarce (this was prior to the restructuring of the scholarship funds), I strived to excel in all that I did and earned top commanders ranking. However, I slacked during the summer , earning a poor field training ranking. The result was my own doing, with no one else to blame. From it, rather than a chip on my shoulder, I took the advice provided by the FTOs to correct and hone my leadership abilities. The following fall semester, I successfully organized and led an event for 1000 cadets.

Through several Air Force exchange programs I made what I expect to be life long friends from various commissioning sources, branches, and countries.

In AFROTC, I’ve learned the impossibility to manage every issue of every problem. Leadership revolves around an inherent trust in others’ abilities and using one’s authority to cede portions of a given task to others. Followership is taking that given responsibility to effectively produce and refine success.

I’ve faced plenty of adversity, learning that a medical issue warranted DQ from the rated board, requalifiying for the board, and getting DQed once more at Flight Med, finally getting DQed from commissioning altogether for something that slipped through DoDMERB. In each instance, I worked with my cadre and consulted every official document and guide I could get a hold of to support my case. Ultimately a waiver was provided. Foolish words and decisions caused an inquiry into my integrity and suitability for appointment into military service. Patience, steadfastness, even temperament, a good lawyer, impartial adjudicators, and contrary evidence were key to correcting the record.

Several times it would have been easier to brush my hands and call it quits with AFROTC. Prior to AFROTC, I was earning more than an O-1 with benefits. However, there remained a passion to serve a country that has provided me with so much. At every roadblock I chose perserverance and found the path to continue my goal. No matter how much of a long shot it seemed, it doesn’t hurt to try. Striving for excellence in all you do is not a hackneyed core value. If you continuously demonstrate effort, it pays dividends when requesting help from your cadre with the hail mary attempt.

So see you on the other side of the blue line, I’ll be waiting

Active duty separating and going to AFROTC

Hello! I posted this in the r/SpaceForce newbie thread but I figure it doesn't hurt to post it here as well.

I'm currently an active duty 5S (space systems operator) in the Space Force with 3 of 4 years done in my initial contract. I've enjoyed the Space Force greatly and I'd like to make a career out of it. I'm currently planning on separating and attending ROTC at the local college where I'm stationed.

Ideally I'd like to commission as a 13S (Space operations officer) with 14N (Intelligence officer) as a backup. I'm not interested in flying whatsoever. I'm studying for the AFOQT, which I've never taken before, but I did very well on the ASVAB after studying, so I'd like to think if I work hard studying, I'll receive similar scores.

I just want to know if this is a realistic path to being a 13S. I've spoken to a few 13S' and they said its a better path than praying for an OTS slot, but I'd like more input/criticism/comments.

I'd also like to know if there are any majors that are more "appealing" to the Space Force. I know they like STEM but I've been reading the stories of people balancing a STEM degree with ROTC and I know I'd struggle. If its truly the best way, I'd still put in the effort to do it though. I'm also concerned that a degree in Electrical Engineering (which is what I'd lean towards if STEM is the best way) would land me a slot as a 62E, and a degree in CompSci would land me 17C. I love Space Ops and the intel side of things and I's prefer to stay if I could. The school I'd be attending offers an Astronomy degree but its a B.A, not a B.S.

I currently have 2 associates of science (CCAF/civilian one) so I wouldn't be doing the full 4 years of schooling for my bach degree. Once again, any input would be great! I appreciate you guys reading this and taking the time to reply if you do. Thank you.

Majors

I’ll be a freshman next year and will be joining the AFROTC detachment at my school. As of right now I have no ROTC scholarship but hope to receive one in the future. TLDR I signed up for classes for next year and Advisor said he doesn’t think AFROTC allows dual majors. Does anyone know 100% on this as I’m hoping to dual major in French and Criminology.
