What are your top three attributes for a safe zone?

Curious what other people look for when assessing a safe zone. Security? Isolation? Access to natural resources?

Remote location, low (but not zero) population, and successfully inhabited for centuries without outside help. Is Bora-Bora the ideal place to ride out the apocalypse?

Solid walls, isolated neighborhoods, and built for a degree of self-sufficiency. Are there any buildings more accessible and higher quality than old farm houses?

How many days worth of food do you keep on hand day-to-day? How prepared are you to share it?

I'm curious what other people's pantries look like. My wife and I keep enough to last us for a few months, plus enough water for about a month, but those could go pretty quickly if we need to help out our parents or neighbors. What about you all? And where would you draw the line at helping neighbors?

Food for thought (Pun intended)

How is everyone?

Many of us here pride ourselves on our ability to survive what for many would be lethal. Given the global pandemic, a lot of our preparations are being put to the test.

Coronavirus is spreading uncontrolled in every U.S. state, territory, and protectorate (looking at you, Micronesia), and it’s on all of us to do what we can to stay safe, and even to help our neighbors stay safe.

Many of us have stockpiled resources for extreme situations, and social distancing demands that we keep away from others given the absence of immunity to the coronavirus. Unemployment is on the rise, probably even affecting members of this community, and a rising crime rate may follow. An ammo dealer I know sold 40,000 rounds in a single day last week, and many of us are uncertain as to what the future holds and how desperate some people may become.

So, I think this is a good opportunity for all of us to check in. How are you? How have you been affected by the coronavirus? This community is oriented around preparing for a biological catastrophe — have any of those preparations come in handy? Does anyone here need help?

Possible locations to fortify

Well in order to have a good safe location to survive in you needa few things. But i am only looking right now at physical safety.
Some walled in Apartment complexes. These have an advantage of possibly having a wide diversity of people living there, and if the complex is secured then some chance for a comunity might arise.
A storage Locker center. These are almost always fenced in or a solid secure building. The added benifit of possibly finding a storage locker with food, weapons or other useful items.
Schools, These could be really good with the way they have been built they have medical and food stores, but they are also one of the areas that would probably attact a lot of attention from other survivors and possible become a refugee camp run by the military.
Big box stores (Like Walmart, Target, etc) These would probably be the first places looted, anysupplies left would be useful, but depending on how the place was looted they may not be securable.
Police and or fire stations. These could be securable, and would potentially have a lot of useful supplies, but there is a high chance of other survivors or refugees trying to hold up in said places.
Houses, it would depend on the house how well it could be fortified, and how many supplies it has.
Warehouses could be very good securable location, but it's supplies would depend on what they were storing there.
Just a few thoughts on some locations to seek refuge at.

Just a thought I had while shopping...

... But wouldn't a local Costco/Sams Club/Makro/Warehouse wholesale location be a prime safehouse spot? Think about it - ample food supplies, typically secured entrances with steels shutters, often areas within the store are then also fenced in - numerous opportunities for barricade creation to bar entrances you couldn't otherwise lock down...

My local Costco even has a sporting goods section, containing the ever reliable aluminium baseball bats, and a households section with a whole rack of crowbars, saws, sledge hammers, and other zombie-killing apparatus.

The main drawback I can see is their proximity to population centres, and their status as obvious high profile targets for looters...

But other than that... Coudl a Costco membership save your life in the zombie apocalypse?

Germany

As dense as western Germany is populated I guess the best idea is to lock yourself in in your third floor apartment, block the apatment door and hope we will win the war between you die of thirst.

What else can you do, if the farest away you can get from civilisation is maybe 1-2km or drive a 1500-3000km to some deserted arean in scandinavia?

Hello Survivors

I am the creator of this sub. I created it with the intention of establishing areas in which people could go during a zombie apocalypse. When I created it I had a couple of redditors who were helping but the help stopped. I got caught up with life. But i still love the idea of zombie safe zones. Therefore I would like to know if anyone would like to become a mod to help expand this sub and make it grow to what we all want it to be. I would like people who would be dedicated to the cause, who could help design the sub better, and who could help us expand. Its too much work for one person to handle, which is why I had disappeared.

England and the European countries.

All the castles??? Think about it. If a world wide zombie out break happens and people are looking for a place with high walls and security then all those near some historic castles in England and all over European countries have it set! Here in America we dont have castles. Just military forts. But castles have the high walls. Easy to man places. Easy to keep safe and take out zombies and protect people. Man makes me wanna build a castle.

What do you all think? Castle be a good place? Get a team, train with swords, bows and spears. Take a castle and just pretty much restart the medieval era!

St cloud mn prison

Built in the late 1800's, maybe early 1900's. Has a 20' tall granite wall. Inside the wall it has two former quarries. Plenty of room to farm inside the wall. It's a long a major road way. Which would be useful once trade became common.

Sandy Hook, New Jersey

Sandy Hook is a peninsula on the Raritan Bay just outside NYC (due south). The area is roughly 6 miles long encompassing a U.S. Coast Guard Station, a marine biology lab, a high school, a lighthouse and the grounds of the former Ft Hancock artillery base.

Although, not an ideal location, for a densely inhabited state like NJ, it offers a few advantages over inland zones. I think it would make a decent safe zone, provided a number of boats could be assembled for escape and foraging.

  • One road to defend or barricade

  • Marine harbor with access to many shore towns

  • Marine laboratory

  • Power generators

  • Several existing buildings & houses

  • Working Lighthouse

New England(Maine preferred) Safe Zones?

Im currently located in central Maine(Augusta Area). I have a definite early plan to gather supplies and stay safe for the first month, but after that plan I really don't have a final destination. And thats pretty much being condemned to death. I have transportation(winter will be interesting if it's in the middle of the woods, as we will be using snowmobiles) to get where ever, just need a location and confirmation.

I'll be bringing me, two of my friends, food and some weaponry(crossbow for me, friend has a decent arsenal).

Coastal Safe Zones?

Are there any place along the American coast line that may be relatively fortified, maybe elevated to compensate for the rising tides? Are there also any island that could sustain a small community as well as provide a defendable position that are a short boat ride from the coast? Thoughts and ideas are welcome

Alcatraz

Think about it, it is off the mainland, it can easily be secured, and it is perfect for making a survivors colony

Anderson Island, Pierce County, Washington State

I've discussed this location with my friends, and it seems like the perfect place to house a large community in the Northwest.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anderson_Island_%28Washington%29

It is a small island (7.75 sqmi), almost completely taken up by a retirement community, only a short ferry ride away from the mainland and the Greater Seattle Metropolitan Area.

The beaches would require a certain degree of fortification and vigilance, but the other benefits far outweigh that unfortunate need.

A) The Island only has a few thousand inhabitants, and they are all retirees, so the zombies will be a bit easier to deal with. Even with survivors fleeing the mainland to Anderson wouldn't be enough to swell the numbers of the undead to an unbeatable hoard for a small to mid-size group.

B) A Self-Sustainable colony is completely possible: The land is farmable, (with many locations to loot seed packets in the immediate area) and Washingtonians are high tech hippies, so solar/wind/hydro power generators and hookups will likely be available to loot. Print Manuals and people willing to learn can take care of installation and Maintenance.

C) Scavenging is going to be dangerous, as it will everywhere, but it will be very fruitful for a very long time, because 60% of the population of the state lives right on the mainland across from the island.

D) Anderson Island could easily work well base of operations for multiple colonies working together to clear the other 20 odd islands in the sound, up into the Canadian islands, and even parts of the mainland.

The weather is Western Washington, so tons of rain and not enough Vitamin D, but neither winter nor summer will be particularly extreme.

What do you guys think?
