2018 Jeep compass for $6.5k. Worth it?

120k miles. Such a low price because my friend selling it to me is a 24 year old millionaire and he doesn't need the money. Carmax is offering him $8k for it. The hesitation is because I am hearing these cars are unreliable shits. I currently drive a 2015 Impreza with 110k miles. Is this car worth it to you?

Which trim should I get for 2024 Corolla? L or LE? (Canada)

I'm interested to buy a new Corolla. Here in Canada we have L and LE. LE has these features compared to L:

    • Blind spot detection
    • Automatic climate control
    • Heated seats
    • Windshield wiper defroster
    • 16 Inch wheel (L has 15 Inch)
    • LE Cost $1000 more than L

I don't care about any of these features. I do want 15 Inch wheel which is included in the L. I'm looking at selling the car in 3 or 4 years. Wait times are about 6 to 8 month for Corolla in Canada. I don't know which trim has the least wait time. I want to buy the trim with least wait time. Do you think L has less wait time since it has less components than LE?

I'd really appreciate some help trying to find a reliable and affordable Hatchback for daily commutes, and city driving, preferably with Android Auto! :)

    Hi!

I'm looking for a used car to share with a family member and I would highly appreciate any kind of suggestions or general help in trying to find options for a car fitting our needs! Thank you so much in advance! 💕

The budget isn't all that great, but i got pleasantly surprised when i found the Toyota Auris seemingly checking all the boxes and being available for even less than 15k€ used. After looking at it for a while i found out Toyota was a decade late in adding carplay so even the most modern Auris models don't support AA or Apple Carplay.

I was looking at Toyota cars specifically since they're so reliable buying a used car from them isn't all that risky, and because they're widely available around where i live (Finland).

I would, however, like the car to have AA if we're spending money on a recent-ish model, as otherwise we might as well just get another ~2012 trash heap to save money as from what i've seen Toyota's own entertainment & navigation systems seem pretty worthless. I mainly use Google Maps for navigation, and if the car doesn't have that as an option, i see no point in paying for a fancy touch screen navigation system that i'm never going to use. In that case, Bluetooth audio will be enough, and i'll just use my phone for navigation.

The requirements for the car are as follows:

    1. RELIABLE BRAND & MODEL

This is the most important part. If we're buying a used car, we need to be as sure as possible that it's not gonna break down on us for a long, long time, and that we won't need to pay twice the car's price in repairs.

    1. General Specs

We are looking for a compact 4-5 seater vehicle for daily- and city driving as well as moderately long drives with a trunk space that can be expanded onto the passenger seats when necessary. It should be compact enough for city driving and parking, but still be able to carry cargo when necessary.

All cars either of us have driven have been manual, but we're willing to give automatic transmission a shot as well! FWD or AWD preferred.

    1. Android auto or Bluetooth

As i explained earlier, I see no real point in paying for a touch screen monitor smacked on the console, if it adds nothing to the comfort or practicality of the vehicle. If the car isn't compatible with AA or google maps in some way, all that matters is that it's easy to listen to music wirelessly.

    1. Decent audio system

Speaking of listening to music, it would be really nice to be able to enjoy the music as well! Neither of us are audiophiles or anything, but it would be nice if the speakers were good enough to make listening to music while driving fun! :)

    1. Fuel

Gasoline or diesel works perfectly, It seems most options fit our needs nowadays are hybrids, which sound great otherwise, but neither of us have any experience with them. We've only heard horror stories about hybrids having reliability issues or being impossible to do routine maintenance to at home (like switching tires), and that they are more likely to fail inspection? I have no idea how true this is but if these are baseless claims, a Hybrid sounds like a great option as well.

Fuel efficiency is a huge plus, though "good" is enough. It doesn't have to be the main focus or anything exceptional. However, the more efficient the car is, the better of course!

    1. Price

No more than 20k EUR (Used), or ~250€/ month. Leasing is also an option but i couldn't find any valid prices around here. Besides, i'm mainly just looking for vehicle suggestions, i can look at deals or sales myself as long as it's roughly in the same price category.

The main reason we want to make sure the car is solid and reliable is so we don't have to pay ourselves sick for it's maintenance. If we're considering leasing, it will be so we can make the dealership pay for any possible wear & tear. Again, we're looking for a used car that will last us a while. ^^

Again, thank you so much for anyone willing to help and take a look at this, all help is highly appreciated! 💕

2024: What car would you buy over the Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD?

I'm finally in the market for an EV and by default, the Tesla Model Y was my first choice since people were saying that it's the #1 selling EV in the world.

However, after watching some YT videos from Edmund's and other reputable reviewers, it seems like the Tesla Model Y has some good competition.

What EV SUVs are people getting into these days or is the Tesla Model Y still the reigning champ?

    Some considerations:

    • I WFH (thanks COVID!)
    • I drive about 3K miles a year
    • It has to qualify for the $7500 EV rebate
    • I live in a climate with all 4 seasons, AWD is a must
    • Reliability (obviously everyone wants this)
    • Safety (and this too)
    • More cargo space and storage is a plus
    • Buttons, knobs and dials for frequently used functions
    • Above average interior would be nice
    • Android Auto would be nice
    • An above average speaker system would be nice
    • Dual or triple displays would be nice
    • Security cameras, 360 view cameras is a plus
    • I don't care about self driving

I really appreciate any suggestions! Also, looking for recommendations for some reputable YT car channels so I can do more research. Thank you!

Put a hold on a 2014 toyota sienna L in Canada. Is it priced too high?

We just put a hold on a 2014 sienna base. Its listed at $18,996 CAD (approx $14,000 USD) and has 89,500 km (55,600 miles) on it.

One owner, clean car fax. Regularly serviced at toyota dealer.

New battery, rotors, brake pads, rear brakes, steering column, lower control arms within last 20,000 km and three years.

    No/minimal rust.

Is this price too high? Finding a sienna with low km under $20k is rare. I am looking for a sienna with low miles under $25,000 and this is the best I have found by far.

Looking to buy a compact SUV under $7k

Hello, we are looking for a second vehicle. This will be primarily used by my wife for grocery runs, dropping kids to schools, running errands. It will be almost always city driving (20-30 miles a day), and maybe once in 1-2 months highway, and that also will be less than 50 miles.

The goal is to keep the vehicle for 4-5 years. I don’t want to spend for unnecessary maintenance costs (will do regular maintenance), so reliability is a must.

Because of the budget, I am looking in fb marketplace only. These are the options I’ve found so far:

    1. 2012 VW Tiguan 109k miles: $7k
    2. 2017 Chevrolet Trax 145k miles: $5.9k
    3. 2011 Honda crv 154k miles: $7k
    4. 2009 Toyota Rav4 160k miles: $7k
    5. 2009 Mazda CX7 170k miles: $4k
    6. 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander 141k miles: $7k
    7. 2014 Subaru outback 161k miles: $6.8k

I have not test driven any of the vehicles, just talking to the sellers. If you can suggest which of these would be better, that would be helpful. Also, what red flags should I look out for while doing the test drive?

    Thanks.

Edit: I am also open to lease deals if the total comes below $7-8k

Best Luxury SUV for Bad Roads

Looking to purchase my girlfriend a SUV for Christmas. We are staying in an area with poor roads (lots of big potholes and unpaved roads) so I’m not sure what SUV would be the best for her. Not looking to be bending rims or have the car constantly in the shop for pothole damage. Here’s some ideas. I’ll be buying new or CPO. Nothing more than 3 years old or 20K miles.

    • BMW X3 M40i or X3M
    • BMW X5 M50i or X5M
    • BMW M550 xDrive
    • BMW M5 Wagon
    • Audi RS Q8
    • Audi RS6 Avant
    • MB GLE63 AMG
    • MB E63 AMG
    • Porsche Cayenne S or GTS
    • Porsche Macan GTS

What do you guys think? I’ve also considered a G63 but they’re a bit large for what she likes so I’m trying to stick with smaller, better handling SUVs. Must be able to fit a car seat and some luggage. Looking for the $70K-$150K range.

Get a Model 3? or keep the Jeep?

    Hello everyone,

I am in desperate need of alternate opinions and/or advice on my vehicle situation. I will be accepting a new job that will require me to go into an office (I am currently WFH) and I can’t decide whether to keep my current vehicle or get something more efficient.

My current vehicle is a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. It is a fairly nice vehicle with okay features and it drives well on the highway. I currently pay $432 for my payment plus insurance. It gets about 18 mpg.

I am considering replacing the Jeep with a Tesla Model 3 performance. My initial decision to look at other vehicles was based on saving money on fuel, maintenance, etc. I have done some calculating and I estimate to be driving anywhere from 300-350 miles a week. I added up miles, mpg, estimating charging costs (I can charge at work), loan payments, and insurance and found that an electric vehicle would save me in the ballpark of $160-$180 per month.

I have driven a Model 3 and loved it, but I want to hear other opinions. Is it worth selling my current vehicle? Is the switch to electric really necessary/as good as they say? I’m also happy to answer any other questions pertaining. I really am just looking for additional guidance/logic. Thanks!

Looking to buy a ICE car, but uncertain what will happen to gas only cars as EV's dominate the market the next decade(s). In terms of cost, infrastructure, and price of gas, and general sentiment?

    Hello,

I am wondering if this is one of those "crystal ball" finance questions where no body knows, or if there is a clear answer here. It is the internet, so i know everyone has an opinion, but i am hoping for someone knowledgeable in the industry to come forward with some answers if there are any.

Afterall, it seems major manufacturers are going hybrid and i heard rumors some may never offer full ICE again pretty soon here. So I have questions around infrastructure, insurance, and financial reason an ICE car is going to end up like an old cassette tape deck - useless.

Thoughts on an 8-11k reliable and fun-ish car that can travel 750 miles consistently?

Hey everyone, a family member recently took out my S40 after rear-ending a pickup truck, and now I'm in search of finding a car. My parents offered to pay some/most, so I'm sitting at an 8-11k budget.

I'm 19M, please keep that in mind with insurance costs. I don't want to be paying a fortune that way.

The car needs to be able to travel for long periods since my school is around 750 miles away from home, and I'll need to drive it there in August.

I'm open to just about any kind of car except for pickup trucks, super-large SUV's (like Suburbans), plug-in hybrids, and EV's. Other than that I'm comfortable with most other sizes of sedans or SUV's. So far I've been mostly looking at sedans and hatchbacks. A decently efficient car is a bonus.

I've looked at lots of hondas/toyotas, mazda 3's, there's some deals on ford fusions locally (one for 9k with 80k miles), etc. I'm trying to narrow down my options and see if there's any ideas/cars I might not have thought of. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you all!

    In doubt..

Hi, I was wondering on what car should I buy as my first car. I got eyes on the Mazda 2 2008 but I am not sure. I found one that is 1.5 and it’s the Sport edition one. Is it better than Yaris, Polo, Ibiza,Leon? I am pretty indecisive..

    2006 Pontiac GTO

I am this close to buying a used 2006 Pontiac GTO with 70k miles on it, manual. I was wondering about the reliability of them as I hear bad and good from people mostly because of their parent company, GM. This is basically my dream car and even if they are a pain to own I still at least a fan of them. Any good or bad news os welcome.

Trying to buy my first car!

i'm looking to buy my first, low budget, used car -- but i'm just not sure what type of car to get. i currently drive a 2015 subaru impreza that currently has 165K miles on it (a hand me down). i drive on salted, poorly paved roads and commute 35 miles to work that's mostly highway.

i'm looking for something AWD, sedan or crosstrek size, that has good mileage, and wont need as many repairs as my car does now!

    any recommendations?

22 Y/O, turning 23 in a few months, looking for a new car. (Canada, Ontario)

    Hello everyone!

I (22M) just graduated and landed a job making ~75k/year, and am looking to buy a first car in the coming August where my insurance will decrease by a significant amount. (7 years of having license, and a year older).

My work is a hybrid position, minimum 2 days in office. However, the office is 100km away one way, so that results in around 400km a week minimum, all highway.

I am looking for a fun, practical, and reliable car, with fuel economy as second. Currently, I'm borrowing my moms Nissan Kick, which she also needs. I am living at my parents home, but will still be paying rent. Budget <40k.

I'm a fan of rally racing, and my dream car is a GR Corolla, but I don't want to afford it right now. But kept it in the calculations to see anyways. Also, keeping a dream car and $50k car clean would give me anxiety.

Currently I'm looking at a WRX base, Civic Si, Mazda 3 Hatch base (auto).

I have test driven the WRX, Civic Si (in a parking lot only, dealership didn't want to test drive a low inventory, new car on the streets). Mazda 3 hatch has no inventory, and was unable to test drive.

Not picky on sound, interior finish/materials, motorized driver seats, luxury items, etc.

Would also like no sunroof, heated seats at least, physical buttons. Plastic cladding is actually a plus for me in winter, and outdoors. I'm looking at Japanese cars because I'm scared of Germans for their repair costs.

I'm not into performance modding, and will be keeping my daily stock. I will be doing light maintenance myself.

I would like to take my car to camping, mountain biking, other outdoor activities.

I'm leaning towards a WRX, and my Subaru dealer gives a $750 new grad discount. However, I have time, and may be there are better options for me out there.

    Pros and Cons

Pros and Cons of what I'm looking at. and fuel economy

    cost breakdown

    Some other options I've considered:

    Golf GTI:

Reliability wise, the thermostat housing and water pump is a maintenance item that I don't want to deal with, sounds like it will be inevitable. New Mk8's no longer has manuals I heard.

    Used Subaru:

I dont like the EJ's and used subaru's in general. Looking at the price of used cars, it's still much higher than normal.

    Used normal cars:

Honestly, it would be the right decision, but I'm really tired of seeing a lightly used car for the price of new, and getting older cars inspected and higher repair intervals pulls me away from that option. I want to reward myself with something new.

    Hondas:

I would like to stay away from Honda, their insurance is high in the GTA. Looking at you Si.

Do you guys have any other recommendations? Thank you for reading this long post.

What's your opinion on 2017-2018 Chevy Cruze?

My budget is about 9k - 10k and I'm from Toronto Canada so the car prices have gone through the roof lately. Only 2017 - 2018 Chevy Cruze have decent infotainment packages and are under 150k kms mileage. I need it daily to go to work about 25 kms away and gym 5 km away. I have heard that older models have coolant leak issues and might need higher maintenance. What's your opinion? Thanks

Challenger scat pack or mustang gt MANUAL

Both cars manual, which is the better buy, I was dead set on a 2024 gt manual base model as I found some for just under 40k, wish I could find Camaros but I can’t. And then I noticed some 2023 scat packs are discounted a lot and are right there at 41 grand. Which would be the better buy ?

My thoughts on this is that the mustang base isn’t gonna handle all that much better than a scat because they are meant to go in a straight line for the most part as it’s a base and not a Camaro. But a big thing leading me away from mustangs were the transmission and the scat packs have a better manual with the tremec right? I’d plan to keep it entirely stock power train wise and daily drive it.

Which is faster 0-60 I’d think that scat pack is since the mt82 isn’t that good. Although Ik the 5.0 is a better motor.

Just give me your insight, this wasn’t even a debate for me until I saw that I could get one for the same price basically.

    "Upgrading" from ILX to RDX?

I bought my first Acura (my first car purchase ever) pre-owned. It was a 2013 ILX, purchased off-lease. I had some issues with it, but overall I've been able to keep it for the past 8/9ish years. I've been thinking of getting the RDX, also preowned.

My only concern is having a car payment when I've managed to be car-payment free since 2020. Also, I have reservations about buying a car pre-owned again, since I had so many issues with my last used car purchased (airbag recall, broken axel, shocks needing replacement).

I also live in a very walkable area that I won't have to do much driving day-to-day, but will mainly want a car for weekend road trips to visit family 1hr - 2 hrs away. My fiance is fully car-free, so both of us would primarily use the car on weekends.

Looking to get a sense of whether I should just keep driivng what I have, or if an "upgrade" would be worth it in terms of better driving experience. It's getting to the point where I kind of feel unsafe taking the car on the highway. I feel lots of road bumps, the cabin noise, lack of safety features like blind side detection -- all making me think I should trade up.

    Looking for similar to Kona

My daughters 2020 Kona has had major engine issues; I and out for warranty work three times the past year and now waiting for approval for new engine.

I have lost faith in the car and want to trade it in and get something else that is similar in size, AWD, all the safety features I.e. rear view camera, side blind spot warning.

Any suggestions on something reliable, good in winter not too low as we have a back lane that gets very rutted in winter.

Not a huge budget, but willing to spend a bit more as obviously this did not work out well.

    Toyota 4Runner/Lexus RX350

I’m trying to decide between a 4Runner and Lexus RX350. I’m going to buy used but get a newer model with less millage. My goal is to get an extremely reliable vehicle that will last for years on end. I want it to be safe as well. I love the 4Runner but I’m scared about the MPG. Which one would be better and cost less to maintain in the long run?

What's the biggest POS you have driven?

    POS=Piece of Shit.

I remember talking to some friends over the years and some of the vehicles they had that if anyone else had they would have sent to a junkyard within the 1st month. Got me curious of some of the biggest piles of crap this sub has driven or family/friend/acquaintance had dealt with.

Also remembered when I was looking into possibly getting a Dodge Dart at one point to find out it was 1 of the biggest piles of shit from Dodge 😂. Good thing I never placed much faith in Dodge. Part of the reason for the topic, too.

Looking for my first used EV ideally below ~$24k. Seeing a ton of ex-Hertz Chevy Bolts on the market for <$20k. What's the deal? Also, any recs on what I should be looking for?

I realize my price range might be a little low for what's on the market, but I'd like to understand what I should be looking for here. Located in NC if that's helpful.

Currently a 1-car house hold with a small car. Looking to get a second car that's an EV. We would install a charger at our house if we bought one, so I wouldn't be relying on solely public charging. As long as has more inside storage than a Mini-Cooper, I'll be happy. I would need to drive this car 200+ miles every 2 weeks or so for some work travel.

I'm seeing some used Teslas for $20k-$24k depending on the year, then a ton of used Chevy Bolts for <$20k in my area.

Ideally I'd like to get something of a range close to 300 miles if possible. Beyond range, what should I be looking for? Are there certain milage points where certain models start to fall apart?

Total newbie to EVs, so any pointers are helpful. Thanks!

    GV70, SQ5, ‘22 GLC AMG

I know elements of this comparison have been discussed and those threads have been very helpful.

I am coming from a ‘23 x5 msport and looking for something smaller.

I drive around 15k miles a year in a combination of stop and go city traffic and highway driving. I typically keep my cars 3 years or less.

I have a family of four (two soon to be teenage boys) and two dogs. Thankfully, the other family car is a Wagoneer and handles the family hauling duty however, even though I am the only person in my car 90% of the time, it is still good to be able to squeeze all four of us in or to be able to take the dogs when needed.

    I am considering an 23/24 SQ5 (preferably with air suspension), a ‘22 GLC AMG 43, 23/24 GV70, and maybe a 23 x3 M 40i

SQ5 : refresh around the corner (but it seems like the Goldilocks in terms of size, performance and comfort and decent CPO pricing)

GV70: great looks, comfortable, recent recall has me a bit spooked and the space feels a bit tight- and, they are seem to be as pricey as the other options and preowned is as or more expensive than other options

GLC AMG 43: like that it has air suspension, AMG exhaust is fun option, but an old model, is too stiff for daily driving? And the smallest trunk

X3 M40i: Similar (albeit enhanced) driving dynamics to my X5, good space, but maybe too firm for a daily driver.

I’m considering slightly pre owned options in all scenarios to get at least some of the depreciation out of the way.

I’m curious what suggestions or thoughts people might have.

    Range Rover Evoque

    Hello,

I really want to buy a Range Rover Evoque as my first car, possibly a 2020/21. Convince me or steer me away in the comments. It has been my dream car for ages, but I have not heard amazing things about it...

Looking to test drive these models, what’s your opinions on each model year ?

2021 dodge RAM Hemi 2020 sierra 1500 2018-2020 Toyota Tacoma 2019-2021 Nissan Tundra

My first time stepping in to the realm of trucks and want to make a good choice on my first one. I work in the automotive care industry so heavy duty isn’t necessary

2017 Kia Sorrento with 160,000 miles for $6K?

My in-laws are buying a new car and offered to sell us their old one for the trade-in value. We are a family of 4, and are in the market for a car in this class. We had narrowed our search to the 5-seater SUV options of Toyota, Honda, Subaru, and Mazda, but got a call yesterday about the Sorrento.

The miles are my biggest concern, but they are mostly road trip miles as my in-laws often drive between Texas and Colorado. My FIL is very detail oriented and has kept up with needed repairs and any normal Mx.

It’s not our ideal brand or mileage, but at 1/5 the price of something new, we’re leaning towards paying the cash and expecting extra maintenance costs. Are we going about this the right way? Or is this a ticking time bomb that should be avoided even at a steep discount?

2006 Outback 3.0r vs 2013 Honda Accord - would like some opinions

I currently own the Subaru it has 171k on it. Replaced three wheel bearings, front brakes, struts and battery in the past year. My brother in law is getting rid of his Honda with 150k on it for 5500. He's a mechanic and used the car to commute about 60 miles a day on the highway. I think it'd be smarter to get the Honda and ditch the Subie. I mainly bought the Subie for outdoorsy stuff but 90% of the time I'm in the city. I also need to replace an O2 sensor soon and feel like the exhaust will need work in the near future. Any thoughts?
