Very confusing C++ issue.

New C++ programmer here, have a bit of an issue that I don't understand, the code will build and run on the robot just fine. One function near the top of my code runs but seems to skip the if else statement within, there is another identical function right under it that works fine no matter what. The not working function only works when I don't tell my autonomous function to run any code, if I tell it to run my drive code in another function it will not work. Is there any reason for the first function to suddenly skip the if else or just not change the value in it when a completely unrelatedline is changed but the similar fuction has no change to its behavior, would my code file be wanted to help me further or something else? Thanks for the help from anyone.

EXP Vex class kit - brain cable modifications

Hello!

I am working with my high school students on creating a navigation maze bot. I want to use the EXP brains and ultrasonic sensors for navigation. I do not want to use the prebuilt distance sensors because I want them to learn how to import libraries to control different sensors/devices and understand pin layouts as well as how to modify two different connection points along a cable.

  1. I am looking to see if anyone has done this.
  2. I am looking for a diagram of the pin layout on the EXP brain, but cannot find one.

Thanks!
-Tom

Pivot point

Trying to figure out how this part to stop the robot from falling is attached to their back c channel and pivoting? I know it's pisionized and get how that's all done but can't figure out how this is able to pivot like this or what it's being attached by?

States qualification question

My team has won alliance award in the local vex iq competition. That competition is qualified for the states according to the vex qualification rule but I have not received any email from the regional manager. I have not got response from the manager as well. Has anyone in US Carolinas region received qualification email? This is the first time I am coaching the team so sorry if the question is naive.

Kalahari Competition

Hey everyone!

I'm curious about the qualification process for VEX teams aiming to participate in the Ohio Kalahari Classic VEX Competition. Specifically, I'd like to understand:

  • The general criteria teams must meet to qualify for this event.
  • Any specific requirements or steps for Ohio-based teams.
  • The process for out-of-state teams to gain eligibility.

From what I've gathered, the Kalahari Classic is a VEX Signature Event that attracts numerous teams nationwide. These events often have distinct qualification criteria compared to standard regional competitions. For instance, some Signature Events may not have pre-qualification requirements, allowing any registered team to attend, while others might have specific prerequisites. If anyone has experience with this event or insights into the qualification process, especially regarding any pre-qualification requirements or registration tips, I'd greatly appreciate your input!

Thanks in advance!

Advice for a first-time judge?

I will be a judge for a comp in 2 weeks for the first time. I am reading through the Guide to Judging and the notebook/interview rubrics. I never had a good notebook during my time in VEX, so I'm not sure what I am supposed to look for. Do any fellow judges/coaches have advice?

Color sorting

Our robot has a vision and distance sensor at the top of our intake, that we plan to use for color sorting. We have been running into issues with the color sort code interfering with our drive code, so when the color sort function is running, we can’t drive. Does anyone have any solutions? We code in python.

Wiggle issue

Hello, I’m back…

Our drive train has a wiggle on one of the wheels matter what we’ve tried to do to fix it. Our wheels and gears are connected through axles and shaft collars with spacers in between. Should we attempt to replace these with screw joints to reduce the amount of wiggle since they can be more secure? Or any other suggestions to fix the wiggle?

Ace 229v backclamp

From what I can tell it's just a simple 4 hole wide back clamp but what confuses me is what it's resting on, is thst plastic? Or is there metal underneath? Seems like plastic would be to flexable?

Fusion 360 or Onshape?

I've been designing my team's robots in fusion 360 since that's the program that I already know, but I've seen a lot of people CAD in Onshape instead. Is it worth learning Onshape and switching to it to CAD robots instead?

Drive Train issue

Hello, my teammate built a drive train and today we discovered a problem with it that we’re unsure of how to fix. When all the motors are plugged into cables into the brain, and we drive it with the controller, It will only move when the controller’s stick is moved left and right. In which case the wheels will obviously move opposite ways. But when we try and move the joystick forward or backward, it doesn’t move at all, and almost seems like it’s jammed, because it moves barely and then stops entirely.

Any solutions??

Calculating the number of times a piston can extend

Trying to figure out the number of times a piston can extend starting at a certain psi with a certin pressure regulator setting and calculate what psi the tank will be after each time. What equation can I use for this? I know the site says the number of times it can be at 30PSI but trying to find out with other PSIs

IQ Team doesn’t have a functioning robot after two months. What would you do?

My 4th grader is in his first year of VEX IQ, and his team consists of one 6th grader (also a first-year), and two other 4th graders. The teacher pairs older students with younger ones to help guide them, but the 6th grader has taken over as the team lead and chief builder. Unfortunately, he’s been controlling, not allowing the others to drive or touch the bot, and hasn’t made much progress in the past two months, with 3 hours per week. They’ve based their bot on the 2019 Pitching In hero bot, Fling, and while the bot can drive, it doesn't pick up or throw balls, and the team missed a competition because the bot wasn’t working. Additionally, the 6th grader doesn’t fully understand how the bot works—when I asked him about a specific part, he didn’t know what it did, even with gentle leading questions from me, until his mom stepped in and explained.

The coach is very hands-off, because that is how she interprets “student-led.” She doesn't allow them to look at YouTube, even basic resources (ie, pros and cons of an H-drive), to ensure the design is original.

With a scrimmage coming up, I’m concerned my child’s team will miss another opportunity to compete. Would you encourage an adult heavily guide them to get the Fling bot working? Would you encourage them to pivot to this year’s Hero Bot, Swish?

Also, how can I help my son deal with the 6th grader’s behavior? He’s implied he’s more dedicated because he stayed late once, and now the other kids feel sidelined. What’s the best approach to address this, aside from talking to the coach?

Thank you for any advice!

Edited Update:

Thank you for helping me puzzle through my response. I am going to discuss the 6th grader’s behavior with the coach. I didn’t initially say this, but the 6th grader is the brother of one of the other team members, and I think sibling dynamics are complicating this and necessitate involving the coach.

I’m also going to let my son do some of his own research online at home, like seeing basic builds that Vex puts out themselves, watching reveal videos, etc. I hope this gives him more confidence to insist on assisting with the build.

I’m going to suggest to the coach that the team needs more guidance, but I’m going to leave it at that and let her take it from there.
