Reddit's home for the FIRST Robotics Competition!

Welcome to the sub-reddit for the international First Robotics Competition (FRC). From FIRST’s website “We call FIRST Robotics Competition the ultimate Sport for the Mind. High-school student participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have.” Under strict rules, limited resources, and an intense six-week time limit, teams of 20 or more students are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors. It’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team. Each season ends with an exciting FIRST Championship.”

Can I still become a mentor?

I am a college student that is currently pursuing a CS degree, however I miss my FRC days and I would love to come back and assist a team as a software coach.

However I have no idea how to get back into community and where to reach out to teams that possibly want a software mentor.

I have a lot of experience with Java and C++ FRC coding as well as pathplanning, auto turret navigation, swerve drivetrain calibration, optimization, and etc. Aside from software development I know a lot about business and marketing development within FRC community.

I dont know if I am too late to become a mentor next season(which starts in Jan if I remember correctly), however if any team want a software coach, id be happy to talk with them.

YAGSL configurator vs Phonex tuner X swerve configurator

Hello, We use CTR hardware with mk4n's. I am the only programer on the team and ı am trying the understand what tools to use. should we use YAGSL built in configurator or Phonex tuner X swerve configurator, phonex tuner X looks more simpeler to use, if we use it can we use configs with YAGSL

Sorry if this a stupid question, this is our first year with swerve and ı am the only programer on the team.

FRC and TSA

Not Transportation Security Administration.

FRC mentor here.

https://tsaweb.org/

Our school (Colorado) has some political challenges with supporting our team due to the fact that FIRST FRC and FTC are not a TSA qualifying curriculum.

We could get a lot more support from district and school if these activities were accepted as TSA qualifying. We believe they technically DO meet the qualifications but we'd need to move a mountain of paperwork to document it. It would help a lot if the national or state level FIRST could do some of this administrative task.

Our administration considers FIRST FRC a competition, rather than a conference. And conferences qualify as a Tier 2 career activity. So FRC regional So, as valuable and educational as FRC regionals are, we don't really get much academic recognition for it.

Has anyone else gotten these actitives recognized as Tier 2 activities? Or any other tricks to get academic recognition for this stuff?

I apologize for how vague this message is. I'm a mentor, not a school staffer, and they are the ones who understand the academic sides. I'm hoping others who are familiar with this situation recognize what I'm trying to say and express.

Phoenix Tuner X no MK4N

As a team we decided to use MK4N with kraken x60 for our first swerve, we want to use Phoenix Tuner X but you can't choose MK4N.
Will mk4n support will added or should we choose MK4i as our module

Is it okay to make an intake arm with a 3d printer?

Our team is a rookie team, and this is my first time designing an FRC robot, but after studying and referencing other teams' robot Reveal designs from the previous Crescendo season, it seems that most of them use polycarbonate panels, metal, or aluminum to make intake arms. Would an intake arm made of PLA filament break easily during an event? We have a 3D printer with a large build volume.

The intake of the image is from Team 6423

Looking for media advice :/

Hi everybody, so I'm officially my FRC team's media manager. And I want to make it good. The things that I'm looking for ideas or tips on are, ●the impact video, ●what do people want when it comes to our youtube videos, ●team brand and identity ●how to get other members get into thematics like our team chant / crowd stuffs ○ our driver introduction being more than awkwardly standing there whenever our flag is waved (our team at one point had this but no longer has the same excitement for it (sorry for the long part)), ●and other ideas for the media

(Also recommending some things like editing programs or other helpful tools whould be appreciated)

Thanks everyone. :)

Completely FREE Webinar: Engineering Design at NASA for FIRST Robotics Students

Hello FIRST Community,

Team 2531, the RoboHawks, is excited to announce an exclusive opportunity for FIRST Robotics students! We are hosting a completely free webinar featuring Dr. Casey Denham, Ph.D., an Aerospace Engineer at NASA Langley Research Center. This is a unique chance to gain valuable insights from NASA and apply them to your robotics journey.

🗓 Date: Sunday, December 8, 2024 ⏰ Time: 3:00 – 4:00 PM CST 📍 Location: Virtual (registration link below) 🎥 Recording Provided: Can’t attend live? Register anyway to receive the recording after the session!

What’s the Webinar About? Engineering design is critical to the success of any mission, whether it’s launching rockets or building competition robots. In this webinar, Dr. Denham will share: • NASA’s best practices for designing systems that are safe, reliable, and reproducible. • Practical examples from NASA missions and how these principles can elevate your team’s robot design. • Insights into the challenges of real-world engineering and how to apply problem-solving techniques to robotics.

Bonus Opportunity: Attendees will have the chance to ask Dr. Denham questions—whether about NASA’s exciting missions or your own team’s design practices.

This webinar and the content release were exclusively approved for Team 2531, the RoboHawks, and we’re thrilled to share this experience with the broader FIRST community. It’s a rare opportunity to hear directly from a NASA engineer and gain insights you won’t find anywhere else!

Starting a team for 2026 season

I'm currently a sophomore in highschool and is very interested in starting a FRC team. But i dont want it to be associated with my school though so is it possible to make a team for the entire city, meaning have members from many different school? I'm from Vietnam and the last time i checked theres only 1 active FRC team so i really hope to expand it. But where do i even get started? What regs event would i participate in since vn doesnt really have a frc community? how much does it usually cost per season? how do you get the money?

As well as how to appriximate the nescecary torque based on stuff like weight and required acceleration and wheel size, if there are any formulas for that please help.

What controllers does your team use and why?

Why PS5 over Xbox or vice versa? are there any good alternatives to "offical" gaming controllers?

I'm a mom and want to start a community team...help!

Hi all!

I'm a mom of two middle school kiddos and am interested in starting a FTC team. However I have absolutely zero idea where to start other than finding a group of 6-8 kids to join the team. How do I register, what will I need, etc. Lol I'm so lost I don't even know the right questions to ask on here. I've tried to ask on FB groups and my local reddit group whether there are any local teams we can join, but no luck, so I figured I'd just start my own. If there's maybe a different way to ask to join a local team that would be great too, but I'm not afraid of a little hard work to get a local team going, just need the right info to get me started. Any and all help would be so greatly appreciated!!!
