What's the difference between /r/urbancarliving and /r/vandwellers?
There is a lot of overlap between the two subreddits.
Here are the top posts of /r/vandwellers.
It seems to focus on converting a vehicle to live in for the purpose of travelling around on country road trips.
/r/urbancarliving is intended to be more focused on staying in one spot. Typically, it is a highly populated area where libraries, gyms, laundry facilities, storage units, mail services, internet, grocery stores, and rest areas are readily available.

Happy Halloween to all of my fellow glorified homeless friends lol.
Definitely feeling a little depressed tonight, and I’m sure I’m not the only one that wishes they were out with friends or hanging out somewhere besides their car ha ha.
Sending you love! We got this friends 🤘🏻
I only need to charge my phone/ car battery in case I accidentally leave my heat on overnight as it gets pretty cold where I am. Im wondering if something like this would be good?
If you’re living out of your car how are you handling the regular dealership maintenance periods when it comes up? Like get a loaner and then book a hotel? I’m worried because the dealership is terrible and last time they took a MONTH to fix the AC.
I've been to Walmarts and they don't have it in stock.
Hey yall. What are some good options of food & stuff to buy at the grocery store that will last in the car with no ice cooler / cooking equipment or anything like that? Something cheap that will last a few days or a week at a time that can withstand being in a car especially now since it’s getting cooler? Also looking for something that’s fiber and protein packed to get decent nutrients? -can’t eat fish/seafood due to allergy -currently tired of salami and bread and chips -fast food is over priced and not good for health
•Thank you In advance
So it look I am going to be camping out in the mountains for the winter (campgrounds with electricity.) I'm doing my research on mobile hotspots. I'm wondering if anyone has any updated experience with good service in the mountains?
I'm doing research now on Visible, Total Wireless, Solis, prepaid plans for T-Mobile and Verizon.
Has anyone had any good experiences using animal? Will hotspot in the Mountain areas? Specifically North Carolina.
I know we don’t want to sit in our cars all day if we can help it, but I have a hybrid job I start at 8am that I need internet for and honestly don’t feel like getting up sometimes, also need internet when traveling. I thought about a hotspot but I think id be using way more data .i also thought about the T-Mobile home internet but idk how that works in a car.
Living in your vehicle for a short or long time what what are big or amall hacks or secrets for this life?
Wether it be for any aspect of the life like being on the road, anything in your vehicle, weather related, meeting people, gas, making money, food, pets, saving money, buying and transitioning to your own house/land, kids, repairs…
Yes. I do get that sometimes that I have to make sure people are cleared out first before they notice.
I was just at my local Ollie’s and they have 0 degree Coleman mummy bags for only $30! They are super hefty with bulky zippers and even embroidered logos! Saw the same online for $80.
I bought two.
Bought cargo van for 50% of my sold prius. Cargo van title, registration, insurance obtained. Sold 5 year old prius for 75% of original payment. Maxxair fan installed. 400w solar installed. Dc to dc charger installed. Wobbling plywood bed and bench built. Thanksgiving sales is soon: 560 ah lifepo4, more roof fan ventilations, insulations, remote propane generator, generator box, window ac??...
Homeless life is upgrading, more money in cds and 457b, retirement in my 40s outside the country will be a reality. Keep up the homeless life. I wish you all happy future.
I have PTSD, ocd, all kinds of trauma, learned helplessness. I'm floundering. I suppose it's better than locking myself away in a room for years though.
Anyone else in an older vehicle keep getting approached by criddlers asking for “clear” or fent ??? Lady leave me alone i’m trying to sleep ! Maybe it’s just my city but i’ve noticed past couple days people looking cracked out appearing out of thin air knocking on my window asking me if i sell drugs? Never used drugs. Considered a satire sticker along the lines of “Not a Drug Dealer” but quickly realized that would look 10x more suspicious lol
To the dude, whom I can’t remember your name, that gave me your power bank with jumper cables, thank you so much. Life would be way more difficult had you not come along. I appreciate you. Thanks man
Riding on a almost dead battery Living on the edge of life Barely scraping by. Not knowing where my next meal will come from
I salute all that help the traveling 🫡
What would be more convenient? I've been dwelling for 5 years but I've taken 3 winters off down in Mexico. This is my 2nd winter and the first in the Rocky Mountain Range , I am staying for school so I can't leave. All summers I would grill and store in my 12v, can't do that anymore... I have a 2kw inverter.
I got too cozy and comfortable with the radio listening to NPR and WABE 😂. Damn...also had leaf blowers blowing this morning...
Had another battery I bought back in January so thank God. Got it hooked up, grabbed some coffee, and went to Advanced Auto to charge the one that died. Old battery still has life so letting it charge. Never leaving the radio on for too long anymore 😂 but damn that radio is so comforting during this time
PS: This QuikTrip coffee too damn expensive...$2.50 for a small i might start having to do coffee candy beans from Dollar Tree or somethin

I’ve let depression get the best of me. I’m completely over whelmed. It STINKS in here. I have to get it together.
I’m doing laundry right now. Then I’m gonna to remove all the trash.
I also need to shower. And I have so much homework to do. I should take my son trick or treating. It’s just too many tasks and my brain wants to shut down instead of processing it all.
Idk… someone yell at me to clean this freaking car. I’ll feel so much better when I can breathe in here.
I’ve been living in my 2019 Jeep Cherokee for the past six months. The first few months I really enjoyed it and it felt like an adventure, but I’ve been finding myself getting sort of sick of looking for spots and always on edge about whether I’ll get a knock in the middle of the night.
I still have debt I’m paying down, but rather than getting a full blown apartment I’ve been debating renting a room (either through Roomies or doing something like PadSplit).
I’ve taken breaks here and there, but find myself sort of dreading when those breaks are over, rather than being excited to get back to camping like I felt a few months ago.
I guess my question is whether anyone else has gotten sick of the lifestyle and then found themselves falling in love with it again, or if everyone just has a threshold and once you’ve crossed it you are just sort of burnt out on living in your car and that feeling never really goes away?
I'm getting so so tired of this eating issue. Currently I don't have a way to heat up food. I'm broke until payday so I can't just go get some warm food either. I've stopped at every food bank and because of how they work in my area everything they give out has to be cooked or they only give out food for special circumstances (which I'm not since I have a job), they also make you register and I have an out of state license which I can't move to where I'm at since I don't have an address....I'm so hungry I had to go to sleep last night before I started crying. All I've really ate in 4 days is a couple bananas and some pretzels. (I'm not looking for money or anything like that) I just need to rant about how hard it is for some homeless people to be able to eat FOOD and not just snack around. People don't understand how much hunger effects your mood. I used to take advantage of eating, (at least imo I did) now id just be happy with some fn warm soup. I have to go to work everyday so hungry and can't hardly focus because it's all I think about. I'm just tired of this. Next paycheck I'm buying a little backpack stove I wont live like this anymore. I know it's my fault im in this situation I could go into details why I feel that way but I also feel like no one should go hungry either. I'm going back to bed so i don't have to think about it anymore.
hi! I'm inching towards sleeping in my car sometimes as needs arise (currently living with my parents). I just got a KIA soul 2012 and I'm trying to figure out how to config the back seats + back of the car into a useable bed. I'm not super tall but I'd like to maximize the space if at all possible. Get an air mattress to cover the "seat gap" between the back of the front seats and the backseats being down? This picture is pretty similar to what the back of my car looks like: https://www.kiasoulforums.com/cdn-cgi/image/format=auto,onerror=redirect,width=1920,height=1920,fit=scale-down/https://www.kiasoulforums.com/attachments/interior-cargo-dimensions-jpg.133637/ I'd prefer a "slab" to go in that seat filler without an air pump, but not a dealbreaker. Then once I have that mostly filled in...I'm in between getting an air mattress or a memory foam mattress topper that I cut down to fit. Any recs or thoughts are appreciated :)
Yes, as the title says.. I'm looking at possibly being vehicularly housed through the winter in a fairly cold(avg Dec low of 20F) climate. With snow, sometimes lots but always some.
I know sleeping bags go to below zero temps or like around there? but I'm not the only one involved in this and the other individual is 30 years older than I, and I'm not super young lol. Wondering should I head for the hills (warmer-less snowy-hills)?
I've lurked in this sub for a bit now and learned a lot and have seen just how helpful and honestly caring everyone is. So I value your input.
I stayed in 2 different grocery store lots and there was someone backed in a parking spot with their headlights on all night. Wtf? Are they paranoid? Has anyone else ever seen that?
I think the ultimate stealth setup in the U.S. would be a old crown vic that says security on the side and has tinted windows. You could legit park almost anywhere or have any old decommissioned police car. Just put the word security in big letters on the side and you would be good. Also I don't think you would have to worry about anyone messing with your car either. What do you think the ultimate stealth setup is?
I can’t imagine doing this long term. I do delivery gig work and I’m driving 6+hrs a day with the same car. I know it’d be a different situation if I had a RV or Van that I could park and then use a second car for gig work. With all the terrible drivers out there I know it’s just a matter of time before someone hits me. I always have that in the back of my mind because then I really would be living on the streets. Most of my life is tied up in this car and the anxiety that one accident could wipe me out is not something I want to deal with long term. Is this something you all think about?
These cold, foggy nights are so quiet and peaceful.
Can we "live" in our cars without joining a gym? Are there ways to keep clean for people that for whatever reason don't want or like to join gyms to shower in public? I'm sure ppl will recommend vans, sponge baths, bush baths and expensive hotel stays. But are there any other very different ways to stay clean?
