"But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round--apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that--as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. And therefore, uncle, though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God bless it!"

As it is the 1st of December, I was wondering what kind of advent countdown people have.
We have an Advent Candle.
A Sunday Advent centrepiece.
An ornate Father's Christmas chimney with 24 numbered pegs, as you pull them out, he drops down the chimney every 3rd peg/day.
Oh and a chocolate advent of course. ๐
Finished our Sunday Advent centrepiece yesterday. It's all ready for this Sunday the 1st.
A good mix of real and artificial items that seamlessly blend into each other. ๐
Fir tree/Christmas tree trimmings, holly, white tipped holly, pine cones, dried clementine rings. The rest is all artificial.
Ages 14 and 16. Very grateful for all suggestions ๐ So far I have:
Thanks!!
Last year, I spent a few days in London in December. The highlights for me were โA Christmas Carolโ at the Old Vic and a Carol Service in All Souls, Langham Place.
Iโm thinking of doing the same in the next few weeks but wondering are there other events that are just as good. Doesnโt have to be in London.
Hi, first post on the sub and on Reddit ever! Iโm looking for recommendations of where you think I can get the nicest wrapping paper from! I was a huge fan of Paperchase and would always get a selection of co-ordinated wrapping papers, bags, ribbons, tags etc from there, but now that itโs gone Iโm on the hunt for my next staple wrapping paper source! Ideally places with a big enough range to get a few different styles that all coordinate, plus ribbons, tags etc. Thanks!
Quick ask: excuse my ignorance but why are Christmas ads by major supermarkets in the UK a big thing? Like the Daily Mail, BBC, The Sun all have them as major news. Genuine question. And what's this about John Lewis, M&S, Tescos and Sainsbury's being better than Aldi and Lidl?
Is it because Lidl and Aldi are German so preference by the media is given to British brands?
Also there seems to be a class war: the poor have a Iceland, Lidl, Aldi, Tesco or Morrisons Christmas, while the Middle Class and wealthy have a Waitrose, M&S or Sainsburys Christmas?
๐ Is that it in class obsessed Britain?
Hey, I'm writing an article for my student union newspaper where I want to find out as many people's favourite xmas songs as possible. If you have a sec and fancy voting for yours I'd appreciate it!
P.S. I'm not making money from this article, it's just for a bit of Christmas fun and I'd love to see some of the nicher choices win!
Thank you : )
My wife wanted me to build a site that showcased all the christmas adverts, so I did!
Its been running for a year now and I've tried to keep on top of all the advert releases but feel free to let me know if I've missed any you feel should be on there.
Still waiting for the John Lewis ad to be released - they seem to be later than the other high street brands.
Wow. The Christmas delivery slots opened for booking for saver members at 6am this morning. I got in to the system at 6.02 and the closest time I could get to Christmas was the afternoon on 19 December! General customer bookings open at 6am on 12 December.
Our family always gets a Tunis Cake at Christmas, but miss the colourful ones McVities used to do, as the supermarket ones tend to just be plain chocolate with marzipan fruit.
However, this was spotted in Tesco. Proper old school version!
