It is time to expand my Pancake Tortoise breeding project and upgrade their current enclosures to facilitate future projects! Here is my wife and daughter, as well as Waffles (female, het T+), for a size reference of the new enclosure. It is 25sqft in total and this will be the same area (different tent) for my juvenile Burmese Stars as well. I will post an updated picture of the end result once this is all completed--so give it time.
I personally choose grow tents for enclosures now as I am able to fine-tune husbandry for temps and humidity. They are also a cost-effective way to house tortoises. Especially during Winter months since other routes cost well over $400+ for something that provides this same sqft. A cheaper route would be building your own outdoor enclosure, but it is impossible for this species here in VA to keep them outside at all for proper humidity regarding smooth shell growth. It has been a very dry this past year. It is also a great alternative to grow live vegetation within the enclosure since I plan on housing plants as well to reduce costs in food and other produce for them. Lastly, I can ventilate the air to keep any smells at bay. Tortoise š© SMELLS!!! I can't wait to show you the final product!
I keep giving him lettuce & cucumbers daily, he doesn't touch it.
He's always sleeping! What I have tried thus far.
1- Putting him outside in the sun.
2- Changing his location/changing his basket.
3- Putting him under a UVB light which I bought especially for him.
4- Soaking him in a warm bath, filling a bucket to his half-shell underneath and leaving him for 10mins.
Nothing from the above has worked. There isn't vet nearby to take him to, every vet I call tells me he doesn't deal with turtles & only he deal with cats and dogs.
Any suggestion other than what I did is appreciated.
My sister left me with her desert tortoise (super long story). She has had it for maybe 1 year and her kids are obsessed with it but its care I feel has always been lacking. We live in the desert and he has free reign of her very large backyard. He loves it outside and has a routine of sunbathing, walking, and waiting for food. Since moving into my sisters house and the care being passed to me I have found that he is not a low maintenance animal at all especially now that is getting colder. My sister told me she used to just bring him inside when it got below 65 during the days and naturally would go into hibernation in the corner of their living room under the couch. Well it is below 65 during the days and I have tried that but instead I have an anxious tortoise that poops everywhere and wont stop pacing. I have reached out to her about this behavior and she says that this is unusual and it never did that with her (who knows if that is true). I have done so much research but still everything is contradicting and I just need help because I am so tired and I hate to stress the poor thing out... What do I do? Do I hibernate him? Make him an enclosure (though he hated the one I made him before)? Leave him outside during 50 degree days but bring him inside at night? Does that mean no hibernation and he gets to eat? HELP!
Got this guy a couple days ago. Heās apparently less than a year old. Heās really chill but hides when anyone gets too close. Does it just take time or is there something i can do to show him Iām not a threat? His name is Clyde btw

Does anyone know what this little ādentā is, its not a hole, its weird.
I have an adult Hermannās that live outside 8 months of the year. For years, heās overwinter indoors on a tortoise table with either all the heat/uv set up. Typically heāll get lethargic for about 2.5 months of the winter. But the other 2.5 months, he HATES being indoors and spends most waking hours stomping incessantly.
Iād like to brumate him in a mini fridge for a few months this year, and was hoping for some guidance.
Iāve read that they need a two week wind down period where you stop feeding them and encourage them to drink a lot of water. Also turn heat lamp and lights off.
Is that all there is to it? Just pop them in a mini fridge at 40 degrees and weigh them weekly?
Is there anything else Iām missing? All advice appreciated.
As I have posted previously, my tortoises act like sassy toddlers. Especially Hermione, she will give me the stink eye whenever I have my lamp on at night as Iām getting ready for bed.

I want to bring home some tortoises but I am having a tough time finding a vet for them, especially one for emergencies. UC Davis is always booked.
Redfooted. We will be extending the indoor table and I want to bring in some outdoor plants (sedum, dandelion, succulents, hosta) to plant in an organic soil in the table either making a hill or separate container. Suggestions? Would these grow lights that are in colour be a problem for redfoot? Up to now, since the rec room is mostly dark, the plants will need their own lighting to stay alive. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B08JPB8F69/ref=ewc_pr_img_1?smid=A791ADBK1DDDF&th=1
Was showering my turtle and accidentally put too water in, I saw her submerged and some water went into her nose I immediately picked her outta there she's moving but I'm scared now
I've always wanted them cuz they seem really low maintenance and just cool dudes
Heās been going in his water bowl a lot lately so thought Iād give him a proper soak in a bigger container. He looks really comfortable but I donāt know how long I can safely soak him for. Heās been in for about 15 minutes so far.
