Information Harnessing

Has anyone considered mining the internet for productive forms of data? There are various types of data available such as:

  1. Big data - volume, variety and velocity
  2. Smart data - actionable
  3. Dark data - subsurface
  4. Machine data - sensors
  5. Transaction data - events
  6. Master data - events key elements
  7. Reference data - events key units
  8. Reporting data - aggregated
  9. Meta data - data about data

What productive actions could be taken with these various forms of data? By productive I mean personal entropy reduction, rather than simple money creation (although not wrong).

Name for Travel Company

Hey folks, I'm looking for some input. I'm trying to come up for a name of a small adventurous travel company. Think: a lot of camping, hiking and rough trails, also a lot of wildlife. Going to places that not a lot of other companies go to, here in Africa.

My original idea, hence my username: Mostly Harmless Tours. I love the name, since it is a quote from Hitchhikers guide, and it is a nod to the adventurous kind of travel that I want to organize. However, it has been pointed out to me that it does put the focus on the risk itself, something most people would try to avoid. So while I still like the name, I'm trying to think of something else. A few ideas:

  • Prometheus Adventures: I love scifi and ancient mythology, plus Prometheus stole fire from the gods and I love cooking with fire, firebreathing etc. The downside is that it does sound a bit...arrogant?

  • Tsaka Adventures: Tsaka means happiness in a local language here. I tried to stay away from 'cliche' African names, but Tsaka is nice and short, and I came to this country myself to find happiness.

  • Nostos Adventures: nostos is a ancient greek literary term for 'homecoming', e.g. the travels of Oddyseus. Also has a nice ring to it, albeit perhaps a bit too greek.

  • Something with 'Ratel': Ratel is afrikaans for Honey Badger. The animal personifies toughness and is a perfect animal as a symbol, but the name has been done to death a bit. A lot of companies use it.

Let me hear what you think, or perhaps other ideas. Anything is welcome!

Are there remote/wfh think tank jobs that involve research and analysis?

Do you know a think tank or a website that explicitly offers this kind of set up? Thanks!

Think something over with me?

I was thinking this morning about my ancestors. The last of them to immigrate to the US came to Michigan from Italy after WWI. That got me thinking about migration patterns in the US. I’m among the last to hold-out in Michigan for love of the State. My fathers side of the family came during the 1950’s with the southern migration to automation in the Detroit area. Then I realized what an amazing freedom is is to be able to re-settle so freely.

I’ve traveled a lot and lived outside of michigan in a couple different places. There is a regional language barrier in the US. Slang and accent make a big difference. In shadier and isolated areas colloquial language is less likely to be used and is substituted for a mishmash of English, Spanish, and a litany of other sociocultural factors. This isn’t usually a problem unless it leads to less then adequate situational awareness. Everyone speaks and can understand a standard dialect that originated in Chicago but I feel has been affected by the countries top 20 media markets in equal proportion to their size after so many years. The standard is the language used in broadcast. Chicago has always been a large media Market but it’s precedence in the beginning…… bleh bleh bleh I think you get the point. Because of standardized English we can more easily adjust to make it across a language barrier but it exists.

The right vs. left state thing is the broadest political description a state can have as it’s the most noticeable instance of polarity. Every state and city has a unique culture though. I’ve come to believe that the land shapes the people. I’ve also come to realize so many core tenants of Americanism aren’t ideals that originated long ago in Europe but were intrinsic to indigenous people. This is likely a result of French differences in new world policy and peace between euro natives and indigenous natives that despite government or the current way of thought - on a more personal level - have been at peace for a very long time and always will be. The American hippie movement thought to be so inspired be eastern culture was about indigenous ideas. Bhudism and Hindu are east to focus on because like Christianity they are not pre-literate religions. Because indigenous North America was a pre-literate society most understand a sentiment that does align with Asian tradition but is land based. I personally feel that people who had grown up in European culture with any genes from indigenous people - especially those that remain dominate over euro genes - began to rebel to align their cultural reality with an accurate expression of themselves.

Anyway I’m going to wrap it up here. How can Americans oppose immigration with such freedom to migrate? I could live and work anywhere in North America. There is a legal barrier in Canada but it’s easier because I’m from Michigan. I could work in Ontario and live here until I got the proper legal status to move. Then pursue citizenship. It is much easier for people hold a degree too. It isn’t as free as a move from NY to CA tho.

I don’t know much about the European Union though. I know the language barrier might be more harsh. The cultural variations are more numerous. What about the other continents? Can one freely move so far with their legal rights of citizenship anywhere else in the world?

Besides the political non-starter of Gun Control, how can we make schools safer cost effectively.

The title says it all. Even if we pass common sense Gun Control laws, our children's schools still wont be safe. Safer, yes. Safe, no.

The military has some crazy shit, but it is a little excessive, and expensive, and would get the kids as well. Take pepper spray, we could install pepper spray dispersion systems in schools for relative low cost, but it would hit the kids too. Safer than a bullet, but doubtful parents would be okay with it.

Ideas that may work:

  • Gunshot Recognition Technology (GRT)
    • Allow police to respond more quickly
    • Enable effectiveness of following items
  • Automatic and strong locking doors (triggered by GRT)
    • In Uvalde shots were fired outside, and could have been stopped with this.
  • Comprehensive black out systems
    • Automated black out shades triggered by GRT
    • Anything to make it harder for a shooter
  • Disorienting Sound Systems (triggered by GRT)
  • Camera's
    • May only need to be monitored in an emergency

Thoughts? I fully think there are better ideas.

hi guys i cracked some sort of ancient code and i'm laying it down in a live podcast thinktank

it is planetary magic themed because apparantly the traditions of magic i am studying are the predessesors of religion itself, science itself, and astrology/psychology

so it is magic themed in a classical magic sense, but free form. it is all a response to jungs redbook to channel the ancient into modern context.

so I'm calling the thing the space couch. and i just started practicing a few days ago with other podcasters, and already have 3 huge episodes. and its getting stronger every day, and I'm meeting in my telegram live every day, although they say discord is better so i might migrate it over.

so yeah if anyone wants to check out the group and lurk or say hi, whatever t.me/spacecouchstudios

I'm trying to get to know international people and minds and build a circle of friends that transcends borders and boundaries. space couch. its organized by jungian music theory harmonic mode planetary magic.

and so far so good. any topic you want, but i like to try to keep it entertaining and I do have specific topics i am bringing to the table a whole universe. so yeah thanks for reading maybe see you there. i'm a ravenous researcher i would like to find more like me

heavy helmet application/ solutions

been thinking about the practical application of steel helmets like some star wars kinda stuff, but the thing I always get stuck on is how to work out the weight. A level 3 steel plate is about 7.5 pounds and has an area of 120 square inches, the average human scalp is 120 square inches, so if we double that for some leway with the dimensions of what a helmet would be that's about 15 lbs of steel resting on the top of your head. Idk about you, but i know that would hurt me walking around in. Now we could add padding, but that would increase the insulation making the wearer get very hot very fast. also with a helmet that covers your whole head there'd be difficulty breathing making your exhalations heat up the helmet more. Anyways I was just bored and brainstorming up some ideas if anyone wants to give there 2 cents on how to solve some problems or introduce unseen ones.

Help with potentially fake think tank

Hi everyone, I hope this is the right place to ask something like this.

I recently started an internship online here (https://www.eiir.eu/) but alongside other interns, I am starting to suspect that it might not be legit. The fellows were never seen before, the researchers are interns and the work that you see is published by us but there is no peer review by anyone else but the boss. Mahmoud Refaat.

Did anyone else have an experience here? Could anyone clarify?

Seeking advice for a possible career in geopolitics and finding a postgrad degree

Hello!

I am doing my undergraduate thesis in geopolitics (i have chose a specific theme). For the past 2 weeks i have lost completely my motivation. I mean it is worth it? When i finish my dissertation i am gonna graduate as well and then what? Should i do an internship? Should i find a job based on my thesis and my degree? I want to do a postgrad on a specific geopolitical issue but i need to save money for that and i am not sure anymore if my thesis can open the door of scholarship for me.

About the career thing. I live in Greece. The top geopolitics here are the Turkish/Cyprus thing. I am not interesting in that at all. My thesis (and my interest) is in Eurasia/Asia region. I am starting to think that in Athens such a career is almost impossible-i want to go abroad tbh-. Also, i don't want to be a diplomat i prefer to have a job at a research institute or a think tank etc. I don't know i really want to some advice here. Is it worth it or not?

Divine Intuition

Note to self: Treat yourself like God would treat you. Treat yourself as though you are God but not a perfect being. Worship yourself, but not as to impede on others and not as though you can do no wrong. Why would you not? Vanity? At what cost is vanity if you respect the sacritity of each soul and hold yourself accountable for your own will. Embrace your divinity. For what is more divine than living life itself in looming death? Pay tribute by parenting yourself. Be kind, patient, forgiving, and nurturing to yourself; for you owe it to yourself for surviving whatever beating life has given you.

As long as I have this idea, I will need nothing else to be at peace.

Divine Intuition (think like God): Once you fully embrace this principal you may learn how to gain access to a higher level of existence. I am nowhere near focused enough to always live by it, it can be an extremely difficult thing to worship oneself as a human being in this world.. especially when life can sometimes be excruciating (weather pain or temptation). For we are emotional and reactive creatures with short attention spans. You access this level when the world around you is silent and you allow yourself to think yourself into madness (until you can have a full conversation with yourself), you may teach yourself to mold the very fabric of your existence. You must allow yourself to let go of how you think and who you are supposed to be. The imagination is one of the greatest and most powerful gifts bestowed on man, but it relates to dissassociacion with reality of the physical world (and what a horrifying thought to man it is to lose control). The closer we get to the grave, the more responsibility we take on, the less we have time to explore our own minds.. the deepest beauty of it is that reality is perceived uniquely by every soul. This new found sense of identity combats one of man's greatest sufferings: a lack of one.

I no longer belive that morality is a human construct and I can no longer deny the presence of a divine entity. The further you engage with yourself in this relm of meditation, the more clearly you access your subconscious. When in this "think tank" I hear myself debating my own ideas, as if the voice were not my own. It often surprises me of it's moral standards. As much as I would like to, I cannot take credit for this level of morality. I am human, I am guilty of sin and I find some sin pleasurable. How could I possibly fathom a perfect moral standard? This may just be the subconscious itself (a completely separate entity in it's own) but now I get hit with these "God shots" or "divine interventions" or miracles that I cannot understand. I now belive that there is a very real possibility

AFTER THE GAZA CEASE-FIRE, WHAT NEXT? | NewsLooks By David pollock

1.Israel Should Contribute to Gaza Humanitarian Aid:

The destruction and suffering in Gaza, and inside Israel, are mostly the fault of Hamas. It started this latest round with unprovoked massive missile and rocket attacks against Israeli civilians, hiding behind the human shields of its own subject population.  Nevertheless, the resulting humanitarian emergency urgently calls for relief from all peaceful parties. And an Israeli contribution might also help repair the political damage to Israel’s reputation, unfair as that may be.

Creating the next big thing in social audio, but I need your help.

We’re working on a new kind of social audio app called Listory Listen, condensing long-form stories from publishers like NYT, WSJ, Atlantic to name a few, into user-generated 3-minute audio clips.

The idea? To help people discover quality articles, increase knowledge in a shorter time, and humanize the experience. [Think TikTok for Audio, but add education]

But before we get there… we need your help and feedback. If we’re creating an app for you, you should be part of the process. We’d love to chat with people that are interested in the concept and joining a private beta group where your ideas could help inform the product.

First things first, take the 2-minute survey - if you have any questions, feel free to DM me

I have simple, practical low-cost solutions to most US socioeconomic problems that would garner overwhelming bipartisan support.

I am personally, solely responsible for major changes to landmark US Federal legislation.

It would be nice if I had a little help.

My ideas could transform the world in a matter of years.

I used to be a member of many high IQ societies with very selective criteria. However, what makes me special is not my IQ, but my imagination.

Few humans have my imagination coupled with common sense. It is easy to imagine all kinds of impractical Rube Goldberg solutions.

It is quite another to do what Kary Mullis did or Tesla, and find the ingenious simple solution that moves mankind forward.

Every once in a blue moon, a “black swan” event emerges.

The odds that I am not delusional and have any ideas of value are astronomically small.

This is going to be the one-in-a-million exception.

I hope to astound you.

—IF you give my ideas half a chance. Realize that most great ideas are mocked as being rubbish: the personal computer and the smart phone, for example, were once called silly ideas with no future by many intelligent people.

Social Media of the Future

Characteristics of the Platform

  • More open sourced so that all decisions are more transparent and accessible by subscribers. No one group should have complete control over any aspect of the platform focusing rather on decentralization.

  • It should also play fair with other social mediums by allowing cross platform functionality.

  • Databases that store this content could be negotiated with group moderators who would bid in a marketplace that sells cloud based storage.

  • The platform could be similar to square space where you can customize the look and functions of your content with custom or standardized APIs. It should be pretty simplistic at first but over time (as users become more skilled at utilizing it) it can add functionality. The platform would primarily focus it’s profitability on how to make the tools easier to use and more accessible and how to create a marketplace for API tools to compete.

  • It will be a primarily subscription based platform where interaction with a content creator/group requires a crypto currency payment. For better traceability and less requirement of a formal banking system. Though, traditional payments can still be used with paypal, square, or a similar service.

  • The more popular a group the higher the cost. The people within the group can upvote and down vote content which costs a small amount of crypto currency (fractions of a penny) the more you contribute the more its relevance moves.

  • Content creators would get a slice of the pie that they negotiate with the owners of the content group.

  • Moderators can be contracted so that the spirit of a group can be negotiated ahead of time before launching.

  • Additionally, bot’s can be used that read comments and moderate them by either upvoting or downvoting comments based on a particular philosophy determined by investors (corporations, crowdfunding, governments, religions, scientific groups, advertisers).

  • AI will be able to determine things that trigger the philosophy of the AI using GPT-3 like tools to search for characteristics that should be upvoted or downvoted.

  • Content groups could be responsible for the content that’s created on their group so it’s their responsibility to regulate it with the tools that are integrated into the open source software. They can vote on wether or not certain tools (like crowdsourcing, bots, government involvement, etc) would be permitted.

How do you feel about the concept of extrajudicial socialism?

This is just something I was thinking about, and not a fully thought out plan.

What do you think about the concept of someone starting a company or organization in place of country-wide socialist reform.

For example, people would sign a 5 year contract to pay into the organization in the form of dues or union fees. In return, the organization gives the less fortunate members financial assistance.

Of course rules would have to be put in place to prevent people from abusing it.

My main point would be that, since it is private and outside of the government, we don't have to wait for it to be voted into law, or far it being voted out of law.

What do you think about how to implement this idea?

There are so many lonely people in nursing homes and our population, at least in North America, is ageing rapidly. I think there should be some sort of way we could match lonely old people to people who would be willing to write them letters. Sorry if this is not the right subreddit but I just wanted someone’s ideas.

European and Canadian Youth on Our Digital Future.

Hello everyone,

ThinkYoung back in 2018, conducted a comprehensive research called ‘Millennial Dialogue on Europe’. After interviewing over 10,000 young people across Europe we found that an overwhelming majority felt that they were not sufficiently being engaged or encouraged to participate in decision making.

In addition to this, Europe has transformed with technological advancements and changed how we participate in society. We had found that while public awareness of some ‘negative aspects’ of a digital world has increased, there has been very little public discord on how these can be fixed.

We created a digital platform where young people can address their digital future in a holistic and positive way that will lead to the most inclusive digital societies.

Youth views on making their voices heard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3vPZEYyJfY&list=PLquImyRfMt6djRF5ueHstdx7R-JSHU5JD&index=1

Dimensionalism; A Metaphysical Theory of Everything

After some help from r/thinktank and Quora, I figured making the revised version of the theory open to fellow think-tankers to see if it can survive the rational fires of criticism. It's about 12,000 words long , so prepare yourself. Here's the abstract to see if it piques your interest.

Dimensionalism mathematically defines "Everything" as the Power Set of all distinguishable finite numbers, and uses "Everything" to determine a more precise range of values of the indeterminate forms. A rational counting of the Primary Dimensions conclude that we live in a 8-Dimensional Space of 4 Dimension types: Mass, Electric, Length, and Time. A new Force of Nature is suggested for consideration; clearly defining the Higgs Force as a new Primary Force of Nature, while reducing Gravity to be a Secondary Force of Nature. The locally flat geometry of a "Growing block multiverse" is proposed for this model. Improvised Penrose Diagrams and Einstein Relativity thought experiments are given to propose relativistic "time traveling" into the future. Philosophical arguments are also given to show how we can never be 100% certain of Anything within Everything, give a defense for the concept of "Free Will" within this highly Deterministic structure, show how humanity confused the First Consciousness for a personable God, and provide 24 acceptable answers to the question "What is the meaning of life?" from the perspective of each tier of the Hierarchy of the Sciences.

This is just a preliminary thought and I am open to any suggestions that we can pursue. At this point we just need a team together to start work!! No matter how you can help please leave a comment with your email or shoot me a PM. All inquiries will be taken seriously and discussed thoroughly over Skype, Google Hangouts or Zoom.
