Anyone do astrophotography?

G'day. I've done all the reading and watching I can muster and am ready to take the plunge on my first system.

I was just curious if anyone reading this in Tassie does astrophotography? If so, I appreciate how lucky we are with our dark skies, and was wondering if you felt this impacts the choice of 'ideal' optics? IE, focal length and aperture size for DSO.

Thanks very much for any replies.

[Question] Moving to Tasmania as an OT - What should I know?

Hi everyone! I’m a 26F from the Philippines 🇵🇭 and am about to make my first big move to Tasmania (Hobart). I’ll be working as an Occupational Therapist in a clinic, and I’m in the final stages of processing everything with the Occupational Therapy Council. My sister (also an OT!) will be joining me, so this is a whole new journey for both of us.

Since we’re new to this, we’d love to hear about your experiences living in Tasmania, especially compared to life in the Philippines. What should we expect in terms of lifestyle, weather, and culture?

We’re also curious about:

•	Things we need to prepare before moving: What’s essential that we might not have thought of?
•	Life as a healthcare worker in Tasmania: Any tips on settling in as an OT?
•	General advice for newcomers: Any local tips or insights would be really appreciated!

Thanks so much for any advice or info you can share—we’re really excited (and a bit nervous) for this new chapter! 😊

What do you call these?

I always thought Tasmanians were unified on the generic name for the items pictured. However I was shocked by some recent comments on an r/AskAnAustralian post where many other Tasmanians were claiming that they'd never heard of the term that'd I would call them.

So, r/Tasmania, what would you call the things in this picture? Cans of...

Gravel cycling in northern Tasmania (Devonport/Launceston

Hi all,

Wondering if there are any cyclists who can help answer if there are any recommended routes or areas for gravel cycling in/around the Devonport/Launceston area. I'm looking at coming over on a last minute trip for ~5-6 days on the Spirit with just me and my bicycle, but I'm not really getting anywhere with my research at the moment annoyingly.

Will be travelling light so I don't mind spending a couple days in each location and riding between, but would prefer to remain on quieter gravel roads to avoid traffic, where possible.

If anyone has any info/tips/links they could point me to, I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks :)

Tips for Eloping in Tas

My finance and i have decided elopement is what we want to do. We don't want the ceremony or to put on a show - just something for us. But i don't know where to start as we're keeping it quiet so can't really ask friends & family (they'll know after the fact) Can anyone assist with the following questions? Please and thank you in advance!

  • can we have it done just with us or do we need our own witnesses?
  • i know we need to announce the propose ceremony in advance, but is that all that's required?
  • any tips & hints you'd suggest?

Cheers!

I know this is a really really stupid question that will probably get downvoted if not deleted but...

I have thousands of bottle caps from cider bottles, they're all the same and for some reason I been hanging onto them (I'm a big fallout fan), but now it's becoming an issue and taking up too much space and I think just throwing them all in the recycling might be a waste... Could they be of use to anyone? or anything? I live in Launceston, and I just don't know if I should throw them out or not, any help would be great! (again sorry for stupid question)

I'm having my first trip to Tassie for my honeymoon and it falls over the Christmas period.

We'll be staying in Hobart, Upper Scamander, Launceston & Forthside in some nice airbnbs. Our stay in Launceston is fromthe 24-26. I'm after some recommendations of what we could do that day? Will anything be open. We are happy to drive a bit further out if theres a good spot.

Best Accountant in Tasmania

Recently moved back to Devonport from the UK and kept my job with the same company. I need a decent accountant that can help me work out the tax implications of my UK salary being converted to AUD with pensions and car allowance etc and how my salary will look

Overnight hike suggestions for first-timer

Looking to do my first overnight hike in Tassie with my dad.

Which hike would you recommend doing, taking in mind we have only done day long hikes before and would only be able to carry limited gear.

Thank you!

Is your house haunted?

What suburb do you live in and is your house haunted? I swear 50% of Launceston is haunted just wondering if anyone's had any spooky incidents in their house?

Only place I've ever lived in that felt like it was haunted was Mowbray - and only in the lounge room.

My brother stayed in there one night and had to keep the TV on all night because he was so scared.

HELLO TASMANIA! (wild court case)

This is the most tasmanian court decison I've read for years...

https://www.supremecourt.tas.gov.au/sentences/mcculloch-d/

Just as a taster of the wild events.....

"On the evening of 28 March 2024, your wife and mother went out to meet your brother. Having collected him, your mother then drove your brother and your wife to some units and parked the vehicle in a nearby carpark area. She sat in the front seat of the vehicle whilst your wife and brother had sexual intercourse in the backseat of the vehicle."

Tasmanian indigenous mythological creatures

We hear a lot about the indigenous mythological creatures from the mainland, such as the yowie or bunyip, but is there any from Tasmania? I know a lot of that knowledge is probably sadly lost but I'm just curious if anybody knows of any aboriginal legends.
