Workload of Philosophy of a Specific Discipline (2nd bachelor)

Hi, I’m currently studying at the university of Groningen (1st year ACM), and I’m thinking of starting Philosophy of a Specific Discipline next year as well. However, I was wondering how realistic this is, especially regarding the workload. Does anyone have experience with Philosophy of a Specific Discipline? How did you experience the workload and what’s your overall impression of the degree? Do you think it’s worth it? Thank you in advance:)

BSc - MSc Astronomy at RUG

Hi ! I am a (non -EU) prospective student coming to Groningen in September '25 (hopefully !). If Astronomy/Physics students or alumni could guide me out -

  1. How's the astronomy department, the professors, the Zernike campus (KAI) and the students and overall study environment.. some general info? Also the Sirius A club !

  2. Is there a culture of applying for summer internships from 1st yr onwards? The coursework is very specialised but still do students go for internships at say Max Plank or Oxford to get exposure?

  3. I am aware of the housing issue, other than that anything else I should lookout for?

  4. I meet the basic requirements equivalent to Dutch diploma.. just my english proficiency is left, will they review my profile only after I submit that? Aside from mandatory matching/housing/visa in March should I worry about anything else? Since it's not a numerous fixus, am I pretty much in? Or there can be a hiccup :(

Thanks for your time !

"24M in Groningen – Seeking Chill Friends for Gaming, Gym, and Good Vibes!"

Hey there! 👋
I’m a 24-year-old guy from Groningen, looking to connect with like-minded people — whether it’s for friendship, dating, or just spending quality time together. I’d especially love to meet a fun and adventurous girl around my age who’s up for something exciting!

Here’s a bit about me:

  • Fit and active: I spend a lot of time in the gym, staying healthy and strong 💪.
  • Gamer at heart: I love gaming on my PS5 🎮 — always down for some co-op or competitive fun.
  • Independent and ambitious: I live on my own, work from home, and earn a decent salary
  • Laid-back vibe: I enjoy the occasional joint 🌿 to unwind after a long day.
  • Big on travel: I take 3-4 vacations a year 🏝️, from quick weekend getaways to longer adventures.
  • Sports fan: Huge Ajax supporter and Dutch National Team fan ⚽ — I’ve got tickets for games every now and then!

My goals?
I’m working on getting my driver’s license (hopefully within the next year), and one day I’d love to own a holiday home in Portugal to escape the Dutch weather.

What am I looking for?
A fun, easy-going girl (or a friend!) who’s into fitness, gaming, or just loves trying new things. Whether it’s exploring the city, hitting the gym together, or relaxing with some games or a good movie, I’m up for it. Bonus points if you like to stay active and enjoy spontaneous adventures!

If this sounds interesting…
Send me a message! Who knows, maybe we’ll hit it off and have some amazing times together. 😊

Do physics students at Groningen have enough spare time?

I was so sure that I was going to apply to physics but now I started to doubt myself because I found out that I don't have a particular inclination towards any field of study. As a matter of fact, I want to explore as many as I can and I'm also interested in literature, arts, photography and philosophy. I came to the conclusion that I still might want to pursue physics in the future and out of my interests it seems the most difficult to study on my own.

Groningen seems to have the most suited programme for me so I'm curious if any fellow physics students from Groningen could tell me how much workload you have (I guess it also depends on how you manage your time) and if you also have enough time for your hobbies.

Holland2Stay - Oostersingel

I am moving into a studio @ Oostersingel next week and I saw on the website that they have a laundry room. Does anyone know if they only have washing machines there or also tumble dryers? And do I have to pay per wash or do I pay a certain amount of money monthly?

Confusing/ Ambiguous grading

Any students here who ever felt confused about the grading process of a certain course? Or even felt they were graded unfairly? I'm writing an article about grading, particularly how objective the process is, what goes into it and where discrepancies and inconsistencies can occur. If you've been through something like that and would like to share your story, let me now!

Waiting for Admission to Search for Accommodation

Is anyone else waiting on a decision for admission so they can try find accommodation? I'm hoping to move to Groningen in February but the application process is taking ridiculously long. I would have wanted to try arrange accommodation in advance if possible but can't until they accept me. Anyone else stuck in this situation? It's extremely frustrating. They've had all my documents since October 11th. I've worked in other Higher Education institution and taking 6-8 weeks to decide on an application is crazy. It just doesn't take that long. Accommodation is obviously limited and they are certainly not helping my case given rooms are being taken rapidly.

SSH Short Stay

Hello! I was recently admitted to pursue my master's degree at RUG, and I have some questions about the SSH Short Stay accommodation:

  1. Are the Short Stay accommodations only for international students, or are they available to all students? I noticed that some universities reserve specific spaces for international students, but it wasn’t clear which universities this applies to.

  2. Regarding rental prices, I assume that in 2025, the rents will increase. They only provided a price range without specifying the rent per room or building. Can someone give me insight into what type of rent I can expect?

  3. The website mentions that for the Short Stay, the rule is "first come, first served". Does this mean that the first person to register has the same chance as the last person to register?

Thank you in advance for your help! I’ve seen in other posts that some people get upset with international students due to the housing crisis. I understand this feeling because I live in Lisbon, where Portuguese students sometimes have to pay €500 for a room while the minimum wage is €900.

Room available at SSH Proxima (Only for male bachelor's student who haven't stayed on a short stay contract with SSH before)

My rental contract at SSH Proxima is available to be taken over, ending on July 25th 2025, the room has a bathroom inside and there's a big shared kitchen on the ground floor of the building. You will have to share the room with a roommate until the end of November. The rent is around 780 all inclusive, halved for the months you share the room. The place is within walking distance to Zernike Campus as well.

They've requested some conditions for the new tenant, which are the following:

  1. Hasn't stayed with SSH on a short stay contract before
  2. An approved SSH registration for the same period (2024-25), if you don't have this you should be able to get one through the university
  3. A Bachelor's student
  4. Male (as there is a roommate)

Please DM if you match the conditions and need a room!

How do you make friends in Groningen?

I'm new to Groningen and just started my master. I was too busy at the beginning of the year to join any clubs and socialize. Now I have the time but everyone seems to have their group formed and it’s hard to meet new people besides the ones I’m studying with.
Would love to join a team sport on a low competition level or even just recreational. But every sports society I’ve asked for is full.
Do you guys have any suggestions on how to meet new people this late in the year?

Ps: I’m an international student

24/7 study places?

Hey,

I am wondering if there are any studyspots that are open during the night? Unfortunately all the common places like UB, harmony, Forum and also my faculty close at midnight or earlier so I would really appreciate if someone can recommend a spot that stays open longer or opens really early in the morning.

Advice on the choice of among SSH Housing

Hello everyone, I will be coming to RUG as an exchange student in the coming spring semester of 2025. There are three types of houses being provided, which would be Blekerslaan, Kornoeljestraat and Winschoterdiep. I have no idea on which to be chosen, can anyone give me some advice, especially for Blekerslaan, there is very little information on it.

Seeking Short Term Accommodation From February - Student

Hi there! I am a Master's Student and I will be moving to Groningen at the start of February for 5-6 months. I am looking for an apartment near Hanze UAS campus (or in between to the city). Ideally I would like a single apartment but I would also not mind a shared apartment with 1-2 other people. If you are a student doing exchange that semester or if you/someone you know has an apartment/room available, please let me know, I would greatly appreciate some help!

*note: I have tried looking on all the websites, but as a student, it gets really expensive for little result. I am posting here to see if any students had places :) (This is also my first time using reddit)

Housing options outside of the city?

Starting the housing search process and nervous about how fast SSH spots get taken up so im trying to think about alternatives. Since the housing situation is so difficult, I was thinking of trying to get a place further from the city centre. I know I'll have to spend more time commuting, but aside from that is there any other downside to looking into housing outside of the city, like being more likely to get scammed? I was wondering why this isn't an option that more students pursue if indeed the situation is as dire as described. Why would anyone rather be homeless or sleep in a tent than move further away? Why don't more people choose this option?

Students fighting fraud accusations

Any students around here who ever had to fight fraud accusations? Like plagiarism, exam cheating, AI use or anything of the kind. I'm writing an article about students who appealed their fraud allegations and basically "fought" against them. Doesn't matter if they won or not:). So if you're one of those students or know someone who fits and would be interested to participate in a story about that, please let me know in a message. Thank you!

Room transfer in the social hub

Room Available at The Social Hub – Starting November 1st, 2024! I'm looking for someone to take over my contract at The Social Hub from November 1st, 2024, to June 30th, 2025. It’s an amazing place to live, but I need to move due to personal reasons. The room comes with a private bathroom, access to a shared kitchen with all the essentials, and is located in a vibrant community. The Social Hub offers a coworking area, a bar, and a café, making it perfect for both work and relaxation. Plus, you’ll get free access to the gym! Rent is lower than the current price, and there are no rooms available at the moment – this is a rare opportunity! The location is close to the city center, with convenient access to buses, supermarkets, restaurants, and bars. It’s also a fantastic place to meet new people and make connections. Feel free to reach out if you’re interested or want more details. You can also check The Social Hub’s website for more information.

A call for help - studying at RUG with a mental illness

A brief story about me below. Now I'd like to find others who may have experienced difficulties with studying with depression, or any mental illness, and make a formal letter or petition to RUG to accommodate for people like us and allow online exams. If you are someone with these difficulties, or know anyone with them like your friends, family, please contact me!

I've been studying at RUG for several years now as an international student. But the past 2-3 years have been very very difficult. In fact, my studies have been delayed by 2 years because of my depression. And the university hasn't been able to accommodate me. The study advisors were really quite unhelpful so far over the years, and I'm really disappointed with the quality of assistance.

I'm hoping this will be my final year, and for this final year I'm requesting the permission to do all my exams online. To briefly explain my situation. My depression began from my grandparents deaths. Living in NL I had to return to my home country in Finland to attend funerals. This happened for 3 years straight, and after the second death I was really quite devastated, I couldn't just return to NL to do my exams as if nothing happened. I had asked if it were possible to do online exams, but I was just told it's impossible. I kept trying my best in exams and studies, but always managed to fail around half of the exams.

Now I've been staying in Finland, this is where my support network is. It would be greatly helpful for me if I got the chance to do exams online, not only to save on travel expenses, but also to escape from the anxiety inducing exam halls.

Again, if you are someone with these difficulties, or know anyone with them like your friends, family, I would be very glad to get in contact with you.

PCC student searching for a room in Groningen!

Hi! My name is Lorenzo, I'm a 27 years old jazz singer from Italy, and I'm studying at Prins Claus Conservatoire for a whole academic year. (From now to June, but I could stay longer).

I'm searching for a room asap, around 700eu/mo.

I'm in the last year of my master degree and I'm using the Erasmus opportunity to move abroad and find a more prolific music scene where I can grow as a musician.

I would study at the conservatory and not disturb anyone in the building.

I am a non-smoker (sometimes on social occasions) and I have 10+ years of cohabitation experience with many different roommates.

I am vegetarian and I'm passionate about psychology and trekking, other than music.

Lastly I consider myself a very clean person and I am clean schedule-friendly.

I’m searching for a place right now, maximum from October if I can get an agreement. If you want to see my photos, check @loreferrand on instagram :)

Please feel free to ask me any question,

hope you're having a great day,

Lorenzo

Prinz Klaus Second Semester looking for Accom

Hello! I am an international student who's hoping to do my second semester of college in Prinz Klaus starting in February, but most accommodations are advertised as first semester or a full year only, are there any websites that would tailor to accommodation for 2025? I am aware of the housing crisis going on atm so I'm trying to look now. Rent preferably between 400-600 a month.

Also if anyone has any general advice for international students so I don't look like a complete fool coming over that would be good!
