I am thinking about moving to Miami Beach

Hello,

I am Canadian and thinking about moving to Miami South Beach.

Will this be a good idea in terms of...

  1. I won't be able to drive

  2. I'll be on my own - what kind of clubs should I join to meet new friends? (volley ball, book, sports)

  3. Are people friendly?

  4. Are there Asian restaurants and grocery store in Miami? (I am Chinese)

  5. Does anyone know if Canadians can easily get their travel visa extended?

Volunteering opportunities or other ways to get involved?

Looking for volunteering opportunities in Browad or Miami Dade. I like environmental work (I did habitat restoration for a while), but open to other opportunities, especially something civic-minded. I'm also a working professional and would be happy to chat about potentially helping out at a board level.

Help finding Adderall

I just moved here and can’t find a pharmacy with my Adderall anywhere. I am not like the people that take it recreationally, I really do need it. I am willing to drive anywhere (I live in Delray). Does anyone know anywhere they can suggest? I am desperate.

TO BE CLEAR: I HAVE BEEN PRESCRIBED FOR 15+ YEARS. I AM LOOKING FOR A PHARMACY, NOT A DEALER.

Sweet munchee cheese????

35 years ago I used to get this all the time at the Publix found in South Florida and ate it for a couple of years and then kind of forgot about it. Now when I ask around whether I'm in South Florida or Central Florida, nobody has ever heard of it and I cannot find it anywhere. What's the story?

If you left south Florida, do you regret it?

We are thinking of moving back to where i am from (Delaware) due to 1 the rising costs here and 2 to raise our family near family. We currently have an almost 2 year old and i am due with our second in February.

I’ve been in south FL for 9 years.. i moved here when i was 22 so i really feel like my “adult life” is here.. friends, hobbies, etc. but i mean with a family, it’s not like those types of things are my priorities.

My husband is ready to go and ultimately the ball is in my court. I am just hesitant to make a mistake or fear of change. It’s a pretty bold move to regret.

If you moved recently out of South FL do you regret it?

25 Best Miami Restaurants Right Now: The New York Times

I used to hate when I saw Miami portrayed in The New York Times.

Most times, it was an out-of-town reporter, trying to write authoritatively when they've been in South Florida for all of four days. There are too many examples to cite. But recently they've been doing something different: working with local journalists to tell stories. (I was the Miami Herald food editor for close to seven years, and I used to publish a list of some of my favorite spots that you guys seemed to enjoy.)

That's why I said yes when they asked if I would put together a list of the 25 best places to eat in Miami. "Best" is a loaded word, but it works for SEO. So what I wanted to do for the actual list was pick excellent restaurants I felt really represented Miami — that is, if you ate here, you would feel you learned something about this cool, crazy place we live. And that the food was fantastic.

I sweated the list. It was my first real project for the Times. I wanted it to feel honest.

We started with something close to 50 places and narrowed it down to these 25. It includes everything from fine dining to frita shops.

Here's my hope: You'll eat through the list over the next 365, mark off places like you're counting down toward Christmas, and by the time you're done, I'll have updated the list with some new spots to try. (We're gonna try to update it twice a year.)

I hope you'll enjoy it. Maybe you'll be inspired to hit an old favorite or try a new spot. Report back whether you hated or loved it or meh'd it.

Here's a gift link. Cheers

Miami Referendums 2 and 3 VOTE NO

The November 5th ballot has two questions, "Miami Referendums” 2 and 3, which deal with two private development deals on Watson Island.

https://preview.redd.it/ztxref98f6sd1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=e82530ffe62fc570dbaa96ee4f111c7feb25c059

REMEMBER TO VOTE NO ON BOTH - This is a horrible deal for the citizens of Miami

  • Did you know Watson Island was originally zoned P-R, Parks and Recreation, and named “Watson Park? Yes, that’s right.  A public park.  All of it.  The entire island
  • They want you to vote to allow the construction of 375- and 535-foot-tall high-rise condos there. The marketing propaganda that is out there has pretty pictures of a bay walk and a family sitting on a seawall by the bay, but it doesn’t show the high-rise condos that are the real reason behind this scam.  This article in Miami Today shows that the two towers were approved for different heights. The “lifestyle” tower is approved for 375 feet, and the “luxury” tower is approved for 535 feet*.”*  That’s on land that was intended to be a public park.
  • A New Public Baywalk?  Baywalks are already required by law:  Miami 21 City Code, Appendix B, Waterfront Design Guidelines.  A baywalk is not an extra benefit; it’s a requirement.
  • Need new Funding for important priorities like public safety? We already pay taxes to pay for that and to maintain our parks. We don’t need to sell off our waterfront parks for safety.
  • Zero Cost to taxpayers?   We’re giving up precious public waterfront land forever, and they’re saying that has zero cost.  Do they think we’re that stupid?
  • New Jobs?  That's the standard BS propaganda line used when special interest groups want the public to vote for a bad deal.  That’s what they said about the Marlins Stadium deal.  It’s just not worth it.
  • $9 million in Funding for housing affordability?  That’s a drop in the bucket.  But no matter the amount, public parkland, especially waterfront parkland, is precious and should be protected and preserved forever, not sold off to well-connected developers and their lobbyists. We need more parks, not less.
  • Are they building a park?  Watson Island was a park given to the City of Miami by the State of Florida in 1919.  Then a previous, ethically-challenged City Commission decided to lease out some of it to developers, putting it on a ballot, which the voters unfortunately approved – a big mistake, as voters sometimes do.  Now, the City wants to change the previous deal to make it worse, with a permanent sale, not just a long-term lease.  A portion of the land would be gone forever, with high-rise condos and no chance of the public ever owning all of it again. They’re trying to convince us how wonderful it is that we’ll get back some of what should never have been taken away from us and not notice the high-rises they’ll get to build.

The City has the wrong values. Instead of this horrible question, what should be on the ballot is an action to revert that leased land to permanent public ownership as a genuinely public park when the current lease expires. Those leases should never have happened in the first place.

Where will this end?   If this passes, will the City of Miami be encouraged to do it again?  Why wouldn’t they?  Will any City of Miami park be safe?

How can you help?  Please forward this email to any caring friends and neighbors who don’t want to see any of our parks, be it Watson Island, Peacock, Kennedy, Wainwright, Bayfront, Bicentennial, Margaret Pace, Albert Pallot, Morningside, Baywood, or any other waterfront or even land-locked City of Miami park get turned into high-rise condos.

And be sure to vote NO to protect Watson Island and all our parks.

Best place to live?

Need advice from South Floridians here:) I’m a native Californian, born and raised. My husband, daughter and I moved to Fort Lauderdale and fell in love with it! After a year, a family emergency forced us back to California. We are longing to get back to Florida. Now that the dust has settled a bit in our lives we are preparing to exit California once and for all. Although we loved Fort Lauderdale, Broward county in general has gotten a little unattainable so we’ve been looking a little further north like maybe West Palm or even Port St Lucie. Our biggest thing is finding the best programs for our adult autistic daughter. We want to live in an area that has the best options for her. We are avid boaters, love the water and surfing and want to be close to amenities. With these things in mind what are some of the area that you would recommend? We are open to going as far north as the Space Coast. Suggestions and guidance super appreciated:)

Is anyone here bored of South Florida?

Moved here for 13 years ago, did middle school to college. Could me being in my early 20s be the reason why i’m bored of it?. I see the same area over and over and i’m starting to get sick of it along with how the people are. no need to expand on that. I’m in Broward County mainly Coral Springs ,Coconut Creek,Margate, Pompano area. Thing is on paper Florida seems like the best place to live. Let me know what you guys think

Delray Beach Halloween?

Anybody know when “weekend” Halloween will occur in downtown Delray this year?

With the 31st being Thursday… I would think everyone will be out and dressed up on Saturday the 26th on the Avenue specifically (that’s the only place I am interested in hitting up).

I’ve gone the last few years and was always the most fun on a Saturday around 9 til everyone closes.

Good Vacation Town

My husband and I and our 8 year old son (and maybe our 21 year old son) are looking for a spot to hang out for about a week in mid November. We’ll hang a lot at the house - we’re coming out of our super busy season with our business and just want to chill at an air b and b with a pool and hot tub. I’d like a town where I can walk around in the morning, where we can ride our bikes (we have e-bikes) safely, that has good seafood, family friendly. We’re casual. Not huge hikers but dig the outdoors. Lighthouses, history, whatever. We’re down. Quirky stuff is up my alley. Old stuff, antiques, crafts. I’d like it to be within about a half hour from Rapids Waterpark, as that was my son’s only request - a lazy River. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Oh and if anyone knows a nearby skate park, that would be cool too!

Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum

Has anyone ever been here? I’d be making the drive on alligator alley and then getting off on the county roads. I want to know if they are safe to drive on in a little sedan. I also want to know if the museum is in a safe area and if it’s safe to take the county roads straight to south ft myers

Where to buy a house?

Parents want to relocate to South Florida.

  1. With the recent hurricanes last couple years, the obvious question is where in south Florida is safe? They prefer a house over condo.

  2. Is there any neighborhood that is appropriately elevated with better infrastructure that would be safe?

3)Are the communities near Weston and parkland cooper city safe from storm surges? They seem to be next to the everglades with so many lakes near the homes. Wouldn't they all get flooded with heavy rain?

4)How far from the coast line do storm surges go?

Thanks! Appreciate any thoughts on this. Don't want to buy a home thinking they are safe and it turns into a disaster esp the cost of living being so high already. And no, living in blizzard land up north is not an option.

Seeking recs on massage therapist in PBG/Jupiter area

Hi there, got some lower back pain that occasionally kicks up and is usually dealt with effectively by some deep tissue work. Looking for a certified deep tissue therapist with several years of experience. I'm ok if they also do chiropractic work also but not looking for a chiropractor per se. Thanks in advance!

WARNING DO NOT USE CONCRETE RESURFACING MAN..... AVOID AT ALL COSTS. We hired him for a job. He took our deposit, showed up a couple of times and did very little. He would say he will be there first thing in the morning and repeatedly never showed up. This dude is terrible and will just continually lie and scam you.
