I know this sub hates “what was that sound” posts but y’all…what was that explosion in SLO just now (10pm)

I’ve never heard a more explosive explosion in my life. Echoing and everything.

Where Can I Find a Local Alternative to Starbucks Traveler Coffee?

Starbucks offers a Traveler option, a large jug of coffee for 12 people (or more, depending on size). Does anyone know of a local coffee shop that might offer something similar? I’d rather shop local if possible.

Any bars that do bingo night over the weekend?

Hey guys, I have a friend visiting me for a weekend and she mentioned wanting to go to a bingo night at a bar/brewery. I know places like ancient owl & barrelhouse do them earlier in the week but does anyone know of any bars/breweries that do them on either Friday or Saturday?

Appliances - Natural Gas or Electric?

Hello everyone. I will be moving back to the Five Cities area and will be buying a washer and dryer. The house has a gas furnace and water heater and we were wondering about the clothes dryer. I have the option to hook it up to either power or natural gas. My wife and I do a lot of laundry and we are wondering which utility is more economical in the area? Something to consider is that I don't see installing solar panels in our near future. Thanks!

Where do you get your haircut in SLO?

I am working on this school project where the goal is to streamline finding a barber or hairstylist in SLO. I want the process of finding one to be stress and worry free. I have linked a rough outline of what the website could look like down below.

Apple Farm? Dinner? Christmas Stuff? Help!

Hello, everyone!

Five years ago, my wife and I stayed at the Apple Farm and had an amazing time. The place was wildly and beautifully decorated and cookies and hot cocoa/cider abounded. We ate dinner at the restaurant, which was also decorated as well as their little shop, which was filled with Christmas stuff. So this year, I bought a number of rooms for my whole family to come have a weekend away with us at the Apple Farm.

Instant feelings of buyer's remorse occurred when I called and was told that they decorate much less now and that the restaurant is closed except for a few hours in the morning. It increased when I wrote to ask for some recommendations for fun Christmassy dinner places nearby (since their own restaurant is no longer an option) and had to wait two weeks for the response: we have no idea what restaurants in town are well-decorated for the holidays. Some concierge service, eh?

It's okay, I know how to use Google. I'd just hoped they'd have the "inside scoop" and since they claim not to, I'm now hoping you do. I found https://thecarrisa.com/ which looks amazing, although it takes no resos and seems closed for private parties most weekends. Here are some questions for the experts:

  1. Did I make a mistake booking the Apple Farm for my family? Are they still worth it? I can still cancel...

  2. Where are some fun and festive places to go for lunches/dinners in the area?

  3. Where are some fun and festive places to go see/do festive things in the area?

  4. Is there a nice "downtown" with shops to go explore?

  5. Anything else I should know about SLO, any secrets or tips people forget to ask for?

Thank you so much for your help! I have no doubt this collective page will be more cheerful and helpful than the Apple Farm staff was. =(

Local options like Operation Santa?

I’d love to give back to some local families this year. Are there any programs similar to Operation Santa here in SLO?

CAUTION! US 101 N/S Junction Higuera

For hikers/ local residents, be cautious if you intend to walk the underpass that connects Madonna to Higuera. I was walking to the path that connects a little after 5pm today but saw a homeless man approach. When I acknowledged his presence, he poorly hid behind a tree. I made a solid 180 in the opposite direction back to Chevron but kept an eye on him. He made some loud commotion but thought that was the end of the exchange since he was still in that one area. I was passing Ben Franklin's Sandwiches on Higuera when I checked over my shoulder to see he was following me on the opposite side of the street. Since he was dragging his wagon, I quickly decided to book it down Walker to High Street. Nautical Bean was already closed, so I continued to jog down Parker until I reached O'reilly's. The employee's were insanely kind and I am grateful to them letting me stay there till a friend picked me up.

I didn't get a solid look at the guy, but he was tall, probably 6ft, had a scraggly beard, wore dark clothes, had some highly reflective object around his neck, I couldn't tell if it was a clock on a chain or some massive ornament, but stuck out like a sore thumb, and traveled with one of those four wheeled rollers about 4-5 feet long. If you come across a similar looking individual, avoid at all costs! If you must travel, do so on a bike or in groups. It saddens me to make a post like this, but I want people to be safe.

Wishing you all well!

Local holiday shopping events

Hi everyone! Wanted to point out some places you can do your holiday shopping and support local makers/artists:

  • The Big Holiday Expo at the Madonna Inn. 12/7 & 12/8 Madonna Expo Center. Big market with 75+ vendors, food trucks, DJ, etc. Put on by the same folks who do the monthly makers market at the Mission
  • SLOCally Made. They moved to Monterey Street this year and are sharing the space with Thrifty Beaches. 70+ vendors and you could also shop at TB and get some great second hand gifts.
  • MakingSLO. More of a permanent shop on the corner of Garden/Higuera, but they're also filled with local artists and makers.
  • Big Ditch Holiday Palooza. Dec 8th in AG Village. 40+ local vendors.
  • SLO Life Mercantile. Not a traditional shop, but a great new spot in town offering workshops and classes for all different age ranges and some local goods. Great option for people in your life who don't need more "stuff"

And I'm sure there's lots more! Pop them in the comments and shop local!

Kids Groups/meetings/social interactions.

My family moved to SLO about 2 years ago now and my son (11) who has ADHD has had a hard time making friends. Looking to see if there’s any kid groups or organizations that bring kids of similar age together for social interaction. Really looking to help my son feel like he has a place here In SLO and make some core friendships. Any options or ideas are greatly appreciated, hate to see the light in him fade the longer we’re here.

  • Side note we are already participating in recreational sports like flag football and lacrosse. During the seasons he seems happy but once they are over he’s just here in the house saying how lonely he is.

Holiday Pop Up Market

Does anyone know if they have the holiday pop up market that was in the Downtown Cinema shopping center last year? I don't see anything on the Chamber website or through a Google search.

What is in the Tortilla Flats building these days?

I miss SLO...lived there in the 90s and visited from 80s to early 2000s.
I used to DJ the Monday night 80s night at the Flats which was a blast and was sad to see that it had changed to a seafood/oyster place. Not sure what it is now.
The DJ booth fun to get into. You had to go into the kitchen, up a ladder, threw a walkway, crawl under an AC duct and then you were in the DJ booth.

Just applied for a job at Captain Nemo's (warehouse)

I'd encourage all of you to not waste your time. Here's why. Not only did the application for a WAREHOUSE position require me to solve ridiculous math problems (for a job that requires zero math, mind you), but ALSO because they asked me about my availability on the application, which I provided (this sounds normal, but will be important later).

Once I jumped through all of the hoops required to complete and submit my application, I handed it off and waited. Once I finally heard back, I went in for my interview in which they AGAIN requested my availability (which was on the application I submitted). I made some minor changes and then agreed to a trial shift to "test my competence".

The trial shift went well, and a few days later, I received a call ONCE AGAIN requesting my availability. I thought, by this point, they should be aware of when I'm available and they would have told me in the interview if my hours were not going to work before using me for labor. I was sorely mistaken. Upon telling them AGAIN what my hours were, I heard nothing for three days before I decided to reach out myself and ask when I started work.

The response I received was not at all what I had been expecting. They told me that my availability was not going to work.

In short, I jumped through many, many hoops to get that job and I was expecting a competent management team to tell me from the BEGINNING that I did not have the right hours for them.

TL;DR: Do not apply for ANY positions regarding Captain Nemo's or Square Deal Recordings, they will waste your time.

Consider my immense hardship I have now experienced a warning.

(Any suggestions for where I can ACTUALLY apply would be helpful)

Does anyone else with Hulu Live with commercials get bombarded with nothing but American Riviera banking commercials?

It’s so bad that I have to mute it. Sometimes I switch streaming services because of it. It’s 3 back to back most of the time and always at least 1. They only have 3 extremely long versions of commercial so it’s just the same loop. Over. And over. And over. Every 10 minutes or so.

It’s so bad that I went from not even knowing they existed to hating American Riviera with a passion. I will never bank with them on principle now because of the torture they make me endure. Am I the only one being subjected to this??

Just Road Raged By Pro-Israel Lady Near The Broad and South Fire Station - Anyone Else?

Anybody else have a woman wearing multi-colored glasses (the frames) - driving a white Mercedes SUV go at them today if they supported the protestors outside the main firestation?- She was driving a White Mercedez Benz suv. pretty sure it was an MLK.

After giving a thumbs up for the anti-war no more support to Israel people in front of the firehouse, she loses her mind and swerves in front of me and tries to drive me off the road near Funston.

After swerving at me and giving me the finger, she accelerates around me, gets in front of me and slows down to about 25 on Broad St. smiling in her rear view and just looking at me.. drivers are passing on the left at this point.

She was last seen dangerously cutting into the left turn lane at Capitolio with her arm out the window after flipping me off, probably turning around to try and go harass more people who just showed support for the protestors. Surely someone else had a run-in with this person?
