California Veteran Property Tax Exemption

If you’re a California homeowner with a 100% VA Disability rating, you may qualify for the Veteran Property Tax Exemption, potentially saving you $2,100 or more per year on property taxes.

If your annual income is under $78,950, you may also qualify for the low-income exemption. When eligible for both, $262,750 will be deducted from your home’s assessed value, reducing your property taxes by up to $3,200 annually.

Applying is simple! Visit your local county tax assessor’s website, download form BOE-261-G, fill it out, and mail it in. Don’t miss the chance to take advantage of these amazing savings! 🇺🇸🏠

Does anyone know of any upcoming 5K runs?

One of my 2025 goals is to participate in my first 5K. I’ve never done one before, so I’m not sure who organizes them, when they usually happen, or where to look for info. I’m especially interested in events in Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo County. Any tips or recommendations would be awesome! Thanks in advance!

Any known beginner surf spots along the central coast.

I’m talking 1-3 ft waves especially during fall and winter months. Thanks!

Veteran Angel Tree has Officially Started!

This holiday season, we are supporting over 385 veterans here on the Central Coast who are in need. We invite you to stop by one of our participating locations to pick up a tag and make a difference in their lives.

The process is simple:

  1. Choose a tag with a veteran’s wish.
  2. Purchase the items listed on the tag.
  3. Return the unwrapped items to the location where you picked up the tag.

This year, we’ve seen a 33% increase in requests for help, and we need your support more than ever. Your generosity will bring joy and comfort to the veterans who have given so much for our country. Together, we can ensure that every veteran feels the warmth and care they deserve this holiday season.

Thank you for making this holiday season brighter for our heroes. 🇺🇸🎄

Participating Locations: • Veterans of Foreign Wars, Atascadero • Coastal Peaks Coffee, San Luis Obispo • Veterans Services of San Luis Obispo County, San Luis Obispo • Rontal Salon & Beauty Center, Arroyo Grande • Peacock Cellars, Arroyo Grande • à la carte, Santa Maria • Oak Knolls Hardware, Orcutt • American Legion, Orcutt

This is a WELCOME HOME MILITARY HEROES program. WHMH is a Family and Veteran run nonprofit organization that was founded out of Arroyo Grande!

Welcome Home Military Heroes Honors 100-Year-Old WWII Veteran in Arroyo Grande! 🇺🇸🎉

Today, Welcome Home Military Heroes (WHMH), a local nonprofit based in Arroyo Grande, celebrated a truly special milestone for WWII Veteran CPL York, who just turned 100 years old!

The event was a memorable Veteran Vehicle Salute held at the Agrarian Hotel, where community members came together to show their appreciation. WHMH volunteers even sang “Happy Birthday” to CPL York, honoring his service and incredible century of life.

It was a heartfelt gathering to celebrate one of our nation’s heroes and a reminder of the sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation.

Let’s wish CPL York a very happy 100th birthday and give a shout-out to WHMH for keeping the veteran spirit alive in our community! 🎂🎖️

Find a D&D group on the Central Coast

My name is Chay Comas, and I catalog local tabletop gaming clubs for D&D, Miniature Wargaming, and Trading Card Games across the Central Coast of California in this free forever newsletter.

If you're looking for a tabletop club, or how to create one from the ground up, this issue is for you. This issue covers some big news about a couple of local game designers, how to find or organize a tabletop club, features local artists, a local gamer keeping a 200+ year gaming tradition alive, a guide for organizing game clubs, and a special dedication to my father at the end.

Excerpt:

...Marshall Neal has been supporting local game conventions by running Kriegsspiel, a very historical wargame dating back to the 1800s as an officer training tool for the Prussian Army. Kriegsspiel is often referred to as the Great Grandfather of Dungeons & Dragons, as it led to more recent, and familiar, historical wargames like Napoleonic Wargames. The Napoleonic Wargames and other wargames of the 1960s and 1970s brought together the co-creators of Chainmail (Gary Gygax and Jeff Perren), which then inspired Dungeons & Dragons (Dave Arneson and Gary Gygax). Marshall has single-handedly kept the flame of Kriegsspiel alight on the Central Coast, as few still play locally. Though his international community on Discord thrives and often plays virtually, I wonder when the last in-person game will be played here on the coast...

Enjoy, and Happy Gaming! Central Coast Game Community Newsletter

Just wanted to say thank you anonymous friend/neighbor!

I must have dropped my wallet somewhere in the near vicinity of Templeton market this morning around 10. Started kinda freaking out about 430 this afternoon when I realized I didn’t have it. Retraced all my steps to no avail. I was completely dejected. The cash in my wallet was my grocery money to get through the next 2 weeks. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do as I was trodding up the steps to my house after a long crappy day. I saw my wallet leaning against my front door. When I saw that I knew everything would be alright. Without checking I knew my cash and cards were safe. I still did check but I already knew the answer. You drove 10 minutes out of your way to return a strangers wallet and did it anonymously. I’ve always had faith in humanity and this is why. Thank you so much friend! Wish I could look you in the eyes when I said it.
