/r/SkyrimBuilds
A sub-reddit started to address the lack of builds for Skyrim. I am a big fan of builds and I intend to be posting some of my own as well as builds I have found. I want this to be a place to post builds for different playstyles, a place to receive critique on builds and help making them, and a place just to talk ideas out.
For anything else Skyrim on Reddit check out /r/Skyrim.
Post things relevant to this sub-reddit only. Anything unrelated will be deleted. Three strikes and you're kicked out.

I have had this build for personal use as I believe in playing RPGs the way the developers would. While this is the only a brief sample I figured someone might enjoy it, the build is partly skill focused but mainly roleplaying based. by the way I am not saying this is THE canon dragonborn its just for fun and I can elaborate on my choices.
Name: Caius Olo Race: Nord (Default Look) Allegiances: Stormcloak, Volkihar, Dark Brotherhood and all other factions. Family: Aela The Huntress, Lucia and Alessan. End Game Drip: Konahrik Miraaks robes Harkons Sword St Jiubs Amulet Ring Of Erudite Main Squad: J’zargo, Meeko and Shadowmere.
Playstyle: I would best describe it as a atronach and spellsword type of build, sneak is redundant as you’ll be shouting and slashing your way through most battles. One handed works best and I would invest in conjuration. I am not afraid to be evil with this character but at the same time I hold myself to a code of honor. I like to think of the dragonborn as a vagabond at heart as he starts the game in shackles. The build is also very defensive in combat.
Starting a new run, only stipulation is no magic. Idk if I count enchanting with that or not but I would assume so since mage stone buffs it. Edit: race is Orc (I prefer berserker rage over Breton resistance)
So I've never played Skyrim before and don't know much about how builds work. I also don't really need a detailed guide for every single item or whatever, just some general directions I guess or even just confirmation if what I'm trying to do is even possible lol.
For more context, I'm playing Skyrim VR using the FUS mod list and I'm currently on my way to Whiterun after spending some time in Riverwood. I've found some kind of stones and buffed my sneak xp
What I'm trying to go for is an assassin character using a (maybe two?) dagger and being able to quickly deal with enemies by sneaking up to them. Idk if that's possible but I'd really like to be able to be very op when it comes to defeating enemies who aren't aware of me and kinda struggle in normal combat where I'm not able to sneak up on them. Maybe even be strong when it comes to stuff like charisma (I've only played fallout lol but I think I saw a speech stat as well) and therefore be able to avoid direct conflict and 1v1 battles where I have no advantage of being able to sneak up on enemies
I would also really like to use magic, but kinda as a last resort type of thing? Situations where I have no chance with my dagger and use magic powers as a last ditch effort. I've only unlocked lightning, fire and healing but are there any other abilities that would suit me for this?
Is all of this possible? And what would my general equipment look like? Just the best light armor I can find plus the best dagger?
And are there any perks that would really benefit this playstyle?
Making a necromancer but I'm not too sure what my armour will be, so far I'm thinking either daedric armour or royal vampire. I play on ps5 so I don't have access to the PC mods and fashion is more important to me over stats.
P.s. greatsword or battleaxe for looks?
Thinking of trying a dual wield character as something different, ive done pure mage, sword n board, stealth archer etc. Looking for some build ideas, any help appreciated.
Had a really fun idea the last night and I feel like it’s gonna turn into one of my funnest playthroughs!! I’m really proud of this lol
Your aim is to get to level 10, start Dawnguard, meet Florentus and complete Lost Relic to get the Dawnguard Rune Hammer. It’s such a unique and fun weapon I’ve conceived this whole build around it specifically.
What it does is every time you bash with it, it leaves a FIRE RUNE on the ground!! And you can control its placement by where you bash exactly. And the coolest part is it doesn’t use Magicka, it uses 50 stamina instead!
Race - Redguard
Ties with Nord for most fitting stats, but have a power that allows them to regenerate Stamina (and Health) very quickly for a minute or so, this is the perfect power for a warhammer build.
Level up - almost exclusively upgrade Stamina, so t invest in Mágicka at all, base 100 and Flames will be enough for us
Stats -
Two-handed (obv) (most important perks - Skull Crusher 3, Devastating Blow)
Block (Quick Reflexes - time will slow down when we place the runes) Smithing (Steel, Advanced Armors - will allow us to upgrade the hammer and another piece we’ll use later) Destruction (Rune Master - will let you place runes 5 times as far away, turning the hammer into an optionally ranged weapon )
Helmet -
Go to Somstheim, start Unearthed - At the fourth expedition you will be able to obtain
Ahzidal's Helm of Vision.
It allows you to place runes significantly further. Yes, it stacks with Rune Master and works with the hammer.
Shout -
Become Ethereal
Incredible stuff. This is made for our build. Hold on to your seats, guys.
clears throat When we bash in Ethereal form. We. Don’t. Become. Physical. So yeah, we can remain invulnerable while placing fire runes around. Yes. This is very, very cool.
Hello there!
I'm about to start a my second adventure in Skyrim and would like some advice. My goal with this new character is to become the most powerful and resilient as I can, seing that I didn't worry too much about it the first time.
Now, I'm aware that in terms of dealing damage, the Orc trumps all by using Berserker Rage. But I'm not so sure in terms of defense!
Which one is more relevant between Physical defense and Magic Resistance?
If it's Physical the Berserk Rage also helps with that right?
If it's Magical, and considering a vampire character, would Breton or Dunmer be the most efficient choice?
With which race would I have to "spend less resources" to get my defenses as high as possible? Or with which it would be easier to achieve these defenses?
Resources being perks, enchantments, standing stones and others I might have forgotten.
Thank you for your time and your help!
Edit: Thank you for all the comments and your opinions on the matter! I have made my choice, and must say that the Bretons have convinced me.
Hi, I’m just curious about doing a build based on The Scarlet Witch from Marvel with a major focus on Magic, and Enchantment
Playing on console, and Anniversary edition and open to mods
And any other in put on race, armor, and any skills would be much appreciated
Thanks!
I made a new character to use to explore Dwemer ruins and ancient Nord tombs. Hes a city orc from Cyrodiil. His parents raised him worshipping the 8 divines where he was more drawn to Julianos. He studied with the Mage guild in Cyrodiil and decided he wanted to go to Skyrim to explore the ancient ruins and study with the College of Winterhold. He uses robes, light armor, one handed, destruction, and restoration.
Saw a clip of 'the son of kyne fighting hescene' might have been on here want to do it in a lore accurate way tho aiming for a beastmaster ranger style build tho thinking nord for the race
Hi everyone,
Wanted to share a build I'm playing for a long time and think it's really pleasant to play with, probably my favourite. I'm playing AE on XB1 with few mods from the minimalistic serie such as Vokrii, Morningstar, Evenstar, Wintersun but the build can be played fully on vanilla. I didn't prepared any lore or roleplay for this build when I created it. Feel free to use this guide as a skeleton for your own role-playing experience.
It's a non crafting build that I usually play between master and legendary difficulty, based on the use of Bound Bow as the only damage dealer with summons as ash spawns and undeads. I don't really like broken mechanics around crafting and prefer to focus on exploration and fun gameplay since most of the crafting is quite boring and a bit grindy.
Race : Dunmer
Stone : Ritual. It's giving you an additional summon. It might work with ash spawns too.
Stats : 3-0-1, magicka until you feel comfortable with your spell sequence, then everything into stamina / No health, personal preference, you can add a bit if you find it too difficult. You aren't meant to be touched anyway.
Worship : Azura / Wintersun mod. It's actually very fitting the global gameplay and flavour of this build. It's giving you 10% magic resistance, a passive to reduce magic resistance and spell absorbtion in a 40 feet radius and being an Azura devotee can paralyse some chosen targets.
Major Skills :
Minor Skills :
Quests:
Gear :
Weapons :
Jewelry:
Otherwise, any ring that can boost your stats, or some fishing rings that gives resists are good to take. Ring of the wind is especially useful when you don't use fast travelling.
Spells : It depends on your spells mod package. I'm using apocalypse these days but it can be any.
Outside of spells, I'm using scrolls extensively with the boost provided by the enchant perk from Vokrii. The spiders from DB are very fitting the build, and some of them like the lightning non explosive ones are dealing serious damage even in legendary difficulty without any boost when you have 3-4 attacking at the same time.
Shouts:
Black books powers:
Secret of Arcanna. Gives you 30 sec of unlimited magicka.
Mora's Grasp. Useful to paralyse a target very quick when the bow is already drawn.
Black market. Can't play without it.
Dragonborn flame. Gimmick but really fun with Azhidal's ring of necromancy and for some occasional fire breath's kills.
Secret of sorcery. 10% cost reduction on all spells and enchants are 10% more powerful, a must have.
Companion's insight. To not kill your dumb follower taking his best bound arrow in the head rushing in front of you. If you are playing a female character, Lover's insight is strictly better.
Now a bit of gameplay. Do yourself a favour, this isn't a stealth archer. Like never. Disable your crouch button. It's actually pretty straightforward and agressive. Cast some defensive spells and scrolls depending on the situation and the ennemies you are fighting, summons the minions of your choice and draw the bow, fire everything you see and don't forget to have fun. When travelling, put on the Hasedoki staff ready to rekt those damn 100 sneak bears on the road and unexpected spells. A cool thing to do with this build is actually to summon/revive undead, wearing Azhidal's ring of necromancy and shouting a fire breath on them. With the ring's passive, they will instantly explode for 50 frost damage each and the Dragonborn flame passive will summon fire Wyrms on their dead bodies attacking near ennemies. It's clearly not the damage dealing combo of the century, Wyrms are dumb af but it's looking sick and very satisfying to launch.
This build is meant for a slow, long gameplay without fast travel. It works even at legendary difficulty but master is its sweet spot. Put some camping mods and enjoy.
Hey all. How does everyone create their build and backstory? How do you keep from falling into the trap of making decisions as yourself instead of your character?
It's my 2nd 1 skill build! This time I am only allowed to level up in speech. Complete and utter Skyrim madness (and fun).
After finishing my first "one skill only" run, I was hyped to try it again with another skill and when my friend Fahluaan posted this comment about a speech only challenge, I just couldn't resist. He posted:
"A better version of Mogrul"
Sometimes it's the character that writes the story. I did not want to play another boring merchant and do the same stuff as usual. Mogrul is an Orc in Raven Rock. He has a bodyguard, he is a loanshark and by all means not a good person, yet, he does not get arrested and knows how to run his business by all means necessary. Mogra is his bigger sister and she does not like physical labor or fighting too much. She prefers to watch and make a profit. So this will be my first time in forever to play with a follower and a pet to do the dirty work for me, only get involved when I feel the need to. Unarmed of course.
Here are the 2 rules of this build:
💎 legendary survival difficulty at all times
💎 only level up in speech
And there are a few additional rules:
- she doesn't work, which means no woodcutting, no harvesting, no mining, no smithing, no alchemy, no enchanting. Ever.
- she doesn't care if she is dragonborn or not. There will be no shouts and no dragons.
- she doesn't use magic or scrolls or staves.
- she dislikes cooking.
- she doesn't like fighting, but if she has to it is up close and personal.
- just like her little brother she will have others to do the dirty work for her, she won't use a weapon to fight.
- she will try and turn everything into a profit and by all means necessary.
(I am carefully choosing my words)
no cheats or exploits

I enjoy playing rp caricters and want to improve them as well as help other people so I'm asking redit what is your best way to make an rp caricter
I'll go first The lore Genuinely the lore gives me so much inspiration All of our favorite races have diverse history and cultures Or every play style has a corresponding group in the lore like the dragon knights or wedes So if ppl are struggling for inspiration look at the lore I'm sure you will find something
I wanna put together an argonian warrior build inspired by the argonians of blackmash that counter invaded oblivion during the oblivion crisis. Im thinking 1-H, block, and light armor. Any ideas on states, gameplay, or backstory?
The Ballista Knight is a mounted (sometimes) warrior clad in heavy armor that is equipped with a powerful crossbow. Instead of dealing damage from the shadows, or by way of agility and a barrage of arrows, the Ballista Knight focuses on single devastating shots. Protected by heavy armor, they march straight into the fray, burying their explosive bolts deep into their foes. This build is inspired by the Waldlind Knights from the anime Record of Grancrest War.
Mostly straight forward, Heavy Armor, Smithing, Archery, and Enchanting. The odd one out is Destruction. Despite not casting a single spell, Destruction is a vital part of this build as it maximizes damage output and synergizes with the enchanting tree. The Destruction Perks will reduce the amount of charge your enchantments consume, and the Augment perks will top off the damage of your enchantments.
Smithing:
Enchanting:
All of the enchanting perks are needed for this build. Here is the breakdown of the necessary enchantments.
Archery:
Heavy Armor:
Destruction:
I’m doing another play through and going for a “warrior princess” type of character, no magic and focused on melee combat. I’m only a few levels in.
What I had in mind was an Orc, heavy armour, one handed (sword or war axe), block, smithing and enchanting.
Is another race more optimal? Light or heavy armour? How much should I allocate to archery for RP purposes (dragons, hunting, or even gathering agro. from afar)? Any other suggestions/insight?
Thank you!!
*Standard Edition, not Anniversary.
A beginner question about Smithing, Heavy Armor and Alteration spells.
Hi, so I never really cared about smithing in my past playthrough so I don't know how it works.
I plan to be a battlemage who uses Alteration + Heavy Armor to try to reach the armor cap. But since I play an Orc, I want my final armor to be the Orcish armor for lore.
I need Skyrim nerds to do the math for me: Is the combo Orcish Armor + Alteration spells sufficient to reach the armor cap as I move to the late game? Or is there room for improvement? If so, would the perk Orcish Smithing (not more) in order to upgrade my armor be enough to fill the gap?
Basically I'm asking whether it's worth to invest perks in Smithing as I don't want it to overlap with my Alteration spells.
I mostly have a finished build, a vampire breton Sword and board but with a mace (would that be mace and board? or Bonk and Board?) with daedric armor + shield with a dragonbone mace. the only problem is the headwear, I want to use a dragon priest mask, but I don't know if I should go for Ahzidal for that sweet increased fire damage (the mace is enchanted with chaos and fiery soul trap) or if I should go for Konahrik for the looks. help would be appreciated.
The All-Maker stones of Soltstheim grant Powers. But you have to have the Bend Will (BW) shout and defeat a lurker guardian at each stone. Usually you get the quest for Bend Will from the Skaal shaman during the Dragonborn questline. No need. You can get BW from the word wall and clear the stones for their powers yourself. It can be done at level 1. Can be a fun way of creating a new build. Here's a playthru of me doing it at Legendary difficulty. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjzQUJ6WoLwbwInpDUjgg0twXdu1CfpMr
Elysia, The Time Weaver, a radiant and enigmatic traveler, weaves through the fabric of time with ease, manipulating events, spaces, and people to her will. She has an innate understanding of time’s flow, using it not only for personal benefit but also to alter the course of history. With a powerful charm and charisma that bends others to her cause, she ensures that no event is truly set in stone—especially her own fate.
A mysterious figure unbound by linear time, Elysia wields magic and knowledge to alter the flow of events, skip through eras, and predict outcomes. Their tools are the subtle powers of Skyrim, creatively repurposed to simulate time travel and manipulation.
High Elf (Altmer): Start with the Highborn ability to regenerate Magicka faster, simulating heightened temporal energy reserves during critical moments.
Slow Time (Shout): This shout is your bread and butter. By slowing the flow of time in combat, you can evade, outmaneuver enemies, and appear untouchable.
* Combine waiting with Illusion magic (e.g., Clairvoyance) to enhance the feeling that she’s scanning alternate futures. (Also a nice combo with fast travel to get 100 illusion quick)
Illusion Invisibility: Disappear from time to reappear a little forward in the future, staying outside of time for a while, observing current events as they unfold.
Frenzy and Calm: Use these to represent tampering with people’s perception of time —making them go into a frenzied state (they experience time at the most extreme speeds imaginable, making them go absolutely mad) or calming them (slowing their time perception drastically, making them feel much more time passing than actually does, that eventually numbs their emotions. it takes hours for them to calm down, but for you it’s just a second).
Alteration Paralyze: completely stop time perception for someone, along with freezing their body in a state of temporal stasis. When they wake up, they’ll have no idea that something happened or some time has passed. If they were to be time-frozen, then dropped, then unfrozen, for them it would be like they teleported to the floor.
Ash Shell — Trap multiple enemies in a stasis-like state, freezing them in time.
Restoration
Healing – Use Restoration spell as a way of "rewinding" your own injuries or injuries of your followers. You literally reverse the time when wounds began to affect you.
Speech
She’s not a person that comes to violence or weaponry for solutions, preferring to deal with situations using her words and charisma and using Time Magic to deal with difficult situations.
Amulet of Akatosh: Reduces the cooldown of your Shouts, aligning with the idea of temporal mastery.
Travel to the past by Loading Travel to the future by Waiting
Waiting: "Time Compression"
FAST TRAVEL: Chrono-Leap
Saving: "Temporal Anchoring"
Death as a Temporal "Split" Instead of reloading as usual, each death can trigger a “timeline split,” where Elysia’s consciousness is pushed into an alternate version of the current timeline. Here’s how to make death more immersive, creating the sense that Elysia’s time powers are fragile and dangerous:
Playstyle and Roleplay Ideas:
Mysterious Motives: The Time Weeaver is an enigmatic figure, never staying in one reality for too long. You could roleplay as someone who has lived many lives and seen many outcomes, often feeling disconnected from the present but occasionally “popping” into time to right wrongs or stop cataclysmic events.
Meta-Driven Choices: Use the Time Travel theme to make in-game decisions based on future knowledge. For example, you may already know the outcome of certain quests so you can literally use your IRL knowledge of the game as her being able to glimpse into the future.
I just started a new play through and was heavily inspired by Neloth and joining the Telvanni my last play through so I decide to start new with a dunmer. His backstory summed up is that he was an orphaned Dunmer who was born into a Telvanni family but his parents were assassinated by a rival Telvanni master. After orphaned he was taken in by a Telvanni maid from a neighboring master and grew up being a Telvanni errand boy. He admired the Telvanni and their philosophy as well as their ruthless pursuit for arcane mastery and knowledge. His pride and drive eventually outgrew is small tasks for the Telvanni master he served and he decided to adventure through Tamriel to learn as much as he could and master his skills with magic. On his way to Skyrim to learn from the College of Winterhold, he was caught on the border. Eventually he makes his way to Solsthiem and falls in with Neloth. His primary skills are destruction, illusion, alteration, conjuration, and enchanting. His secondary skills are restoration, alchemy, and one-handed.
My new build is an Nord. Old grey hair and on retirement. He was one of the bodyguards of Torygg and left his duty in honour some time before ullfric made torygg boom.
He lived with his Wife and daughter in a small cabin and was happy with gardening, farming, hunting, fishing and smithing.
When he came back from an hunting trip, his house was gone. Burnt to the ground. His wife and daughter were dead. And on top of this, a good friend of him, torygg got killed by ullfric. Totaly fed up by the disaster and chaos he tried to flee skyrim. And now...Things happen.
2-handed, heavy Armor, Companions, civil war for the Imperium, bow, Alchemy, cooking, smithing. Dawnguard
Due to the traumatic loss of his wife and daughter, he tries to make it unhappen by beeing a father to orphan girls and fights with women as follower, no man.
After a battle with vampires he finds out, his home was destroyed by vampires because his wife was a devotet believer to Stendarr.
His name is Fenris.
No conjuration, no followers, no crafting abuse.
End game is cake generally speaking. I’ll end up dabbling into archery/crossbows a bit.
Early and mid game is where I always have my issues. The stamina bonuses of light armor almost seem like it makes it the way to go. But I’ve never tried it before, always heavy for warriors.
Any thoughts?
Dependant on character build, archetype, playstyle etc.. that being said and known, what is or are your go to methods of healing? Restoration spells, absord health enchantments, potions, food, new destruction spells?
