Could use some help with what to look out for, for my trip to croatia.

So i am not 100% sure if this is the perfect subreddit, if there is something better feel free to recommend it to me.

So i am planning on going to croatia in Summer from Austria for 1-2 weeks preferably 2 weeks tho. I want to go there with my longboard, a tent and clothes and all the basic necessities, but thats about it and i feel like im missing a lot of useful things i might want to take with me. I have never done this before so i would appreciate any type of advice!

Could use some help brainstorming for a last minute trip to the Paris Olympics

I was recently reading about the plans for the opening ceremony with the parade of nations down the Siene and it was such a spectacular image I decided there was now way I could miss it! Honestly just being there to see that would make the whole trip. (From what I read it should be visible from a few locations in the city not just ticket holders). My budget would be around $1k-$2k.

Right now the plan is to keep an eye on any flight deals from my home airport to any European city and then getting a bus or train to Paris. I could stay in a city near Paris and travel into Paris the day of if that’s easier. Any thoughts?

I know it’s pretty last minute, but I’m determined to make it happen. Any input or ideas would be appreciated.

train from boston to nyc for cheap?

my partner is gonna be in boston and i’ll be in the new york area for about 2 months this summer and we want to be able to see each other as much as possible. it seems like our options are either driving to each other (we both hate driving) or taking the amtrak train to each other (expensive) and i was wondering if there’s any way to get the train tickets for cheaper? is there a frequent traveler kinda pass we could buy? we normally see each other every weekend and spending $140+ each weekend is a lot just for train tickets. i’m not too familiar with amtrak or finding cheap trains. thanks!

The question is how much money do you really need to move to another country alone?

I want to move away from my parents and fly to another country, but I don’t know how much money I might need for the first time. It’s really important for me to understand how much money I need to save to move. We include the fact that I need to live somewhere, food, utilities, and the fact that I won’t go to work immediately upon arrival.

2000€ for a month in Ireland/UK?

I’ll be spending around half this time in bigger cities (Dublin/Derry/Glasgow/Edinburgh/Manchester, maybe one night in London), the rest I’ll be in small towns or camping in the countryside.

I have no requirements for accommodation as I’ve had only great experiences in hostel dorm rooms and can basically sleep anywhere, but access to a shower once every few days would be great so I don’t become a menace to society lol.

Don’t have a car but a small tent, and plan to travel coach (or train depending on price) between cities.

For food I’d love to go out at a modest place once a day, but would also be fine with grocery store food. 2 small meals a day, warm or cold doesn’t matter, plus a coffee if possible.

During the days I spend in a bigger city, I’d love to go to some museums, but really can’t tell how expensive that’ll be…

Do you think my budget will be enough? I’m a bit worried especially as it’s in the summer tourist season (June).

Is Greyhound Better After Policy Changes In The Past Few Years

So, it's been a few years since I took it, and in most cases it was an awful experience, and I vowed from then on to never take a long route with them.

Anywho, that aside, I'm taking a much shorter and more direct route because it's by far the cheapest way to get to where I'm going, especially because I get a discount on my fare. I noticed that there have been some new rules in place since the last time I rode and some policy changes.

So, I'm wondering how things are with them lately and if things are better than they were before? Have they improved any in the past few years, or is it just a corporate façade of change?

19 Year old 1 Month in Europe

I plan on going for a month more or less. Would a budget of ~$1500 be realistic? I found a ticket to London for about $700 and I plan on bouncing around europe on the train. On top of not knowing my daily budget for food and other expenses, I don’t know what to expect from the train system. I was looking for some type of train pass but i’ve been reading that it would be cheaper to reserve tickets a few days out. My itinerary right now is London->Paris->Amsterdam->milan->???. I’m fairly easygoing and want to go by feel, while also ensuring that i have enough money to avoid being stranded

American with two weeks leftover in Europe this August after a month in Copenhagen, Denmark. Where should I go?

I will be in Copenhagen this July on a study abroad program. Afterwards, I’ll be on my own from August 3rd - 20th. On the 20th I do have to fly back to the U.S. from Denmark.

Post-Copenhagen my budget is a few thousand USD, hopefully more. I’m interested in places where locals aren’t rude to foreigners. I typically make friends with introverts who are interesting (intellectual, kind, and funny) conversationalists.

My favorite destinations in Europe so far have been The Netherlands, Germany, and Spain. My least favorite spots have been France and Italy. I’ve also been to Portugal, Switzerland, Belgium, Greece, (Istanbul) Turkey, and the countryside of Austria. Not part of Europe, but I adore Oaxaca, Mexico. I’m open to further questions :)

Peru for travel/remote work for 6-8 weeks or add other countries?

I'm going to work remotely from South America for 6-8 weeks in July and August. I haven't figured out exactly how long I will be there yet, but the current thought is flying there some time the week of July 4th, and leaving some time the last week of August, at the latest. So that should give me about 6-8 weeks.

I'll probably take 5-10 weekdays off, so realistically I have 5-10 weekdays + all the weekends for traveling.

Peru will definitely be my focus, but I'm not sure if I want to spend all that time in Peru, or if i should add another country to the mix, and if so, I'm thinking one or two of {Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia}. Anyone suggestions?

Eurrail vs. car vs. individual trains for 2 weeks in Europe

Hi y'all, my new husband and I are planning a Europe trip and neither of us have been back over that way in 8 years. Last time I went, I used the Eurrail pass for a month and it was great to get to a bunch of smaller towns off the beaten path and take day trips without spending a fortune. however, looking at the website now, it looks like the pass only goes to major cities and I'm seeing more folks say it is cheaper to just buy individual train passes.

I started to look into it, and I do think that a eurrail pass would be overkill for our purposes (we're going to Croatia, Slovenia, and Austria), but looking at doing individual rail passes, I'm not 100% sure if it would be more cost effective for us to potentially rent a car...? Has anyone done a multi-country trip in Europe in the past year or so? If so, what are your thoughts? Additionally, I'm seeing a lot of cities are now only showing bussing as an option rather than trains, has anyone else noticed/ experienced this? We're trying to balance not totally blowing our budget, with also having the freedom to do day trips.

Additionally, any other cost saving tips are appreciated!

Question

Can a change of look bring any issues when it comes to identification while traveling abroad? I recently cut off my hair after having it long for years. I need to travel to Europe in a few months and in all my documents I look dramatically different. I am worried because some people told me they barely recognise me now

Help for an Aussie?

Hi All

I really need a mental health break/holiday cause I havent had one since pre-covid, but I'm wanting some advice to avoid spending an arm and a leg. I know I'd like to go somewhere tropical and would prefer to go during the wet season (cause I enjoy the storms/rain etc) but, I dont really want to be spending upwards of $2-2.5k as I'm seeing on most travel sites. I dont even plan on doing anything tremendously exciting tbh. I just want to relax by a pool and drink fruity drinks with little umbrellas in them so, spending thousands of dollars would really feel like a bit of a waste.

So, can anyone provide some advice on where or how to search for a nice place that result in a huge cost? I've seen some decent deals on Groupon but, dont know how much faith to put in them and, other then online travel agents I'm not sure where else to look.

Thanks all!

Couple’s trip (proposal)

Hello. I’m looking to book a last minute, week long trip in June, sometime between June 15-29. Looking to spend about $1250-$1500 (a bit higher is fine if necessary) per person on flights and accommodations. I’d be flying from Memphis, TN. I plan on proposing on this trip. I have yet to go out of the country, but we both have our passports.

I’ve been looking on Costco travel, some resorts in Cancun fit the budget, but looking for more input on other destinations, especially considering the proposal.

Open to anywhere within budget, really. Beaches are a plus, but not necessary.

Any suggestions?

Where to go near Phuket for quiet, pedestrian/bicycle friendly, budget, beach

I am flying into Phuket and trying to decide where to go to enjoy some nice beach scenery. I don't want to travel much more than 6 hours from Phuket to get there. I will be there in May/June and I understand the west coast will have more rain and be less swimmable at this time. The rain doesn't bother me but I would like to be able to swim, and I am concerned that some less popular places will be shut down due to it being low season. My main criteria:

-small, quiet town

-pedestrian/bicycle
friendly

-beautiful beaches and
other natural features

-cheap

-food delivery apps would
be amazing

-I'd really like to wear
a (relatively conservative) bikini on the beach without worrying about
offending anyone

-as far away from parties
as possible

Some places I am
considering:

West coast:

-Koh Yao Noi but there
aren't a lot of accommodation options it seems, perhaps because of the season?

-Khao Lak but it sounds
like you need a vehicle to get around

-Koh Phayam, Koh Chang
but they're a little farther than I'd like and how operational will they be in
low season?

-Koh Lanta but difficult
without a vehicle?

East coast:

-koh samui but it's more
expensive

-koh tao

-koh phangan, especially
bottle beach for the walking trails and not around the full moon

-khanom

Question: Are beach
destinations south of Koh Lanta generally going to be operational at this time
of year?

Flying United To San Fran Vs Budget Carrier

Hello all, I am going to San Francisco in early August. I found a United deal for $299 that becomes $399 when you include a carry on and seat selection. I did a similar upgrade on my last flight with Delta and felt it was worth it to get to pick the seat, but I feel like the seats were marginally more comfortable then Frontier especially with the 737. Is $400 round trip for a late july to early aug trip going to be the best deal and is it not worth, not to fly budget, because of this?

Bringing cash vs. credit card for backpacking trip?

I'll be backpacking across Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Japan, Hong Kong, Brunei, and Cambodia for a quick tour, spending nearly a week or less in each country.
My Canadian credit card charges a 2.5% foreign transaction fee. I'm debating whether to rely more on my credit card or cash, except for cash-only transactions.
I'm curious if converting USD to local currencies will incur a commission higher or lower than 2.5%. If it's equal or more, using my credit card might be more convenient. Any recommendations on cash versus credit card usage?

adding a night to reservation, north myrtle beach sc

So as I shopped for my North myrtle beach stay memorial weekend, I found the best deal on ebay the 24th through the 27th, $100+ cheaper than airbnb and vrbo.. at the wyndham. ($725 vs $850) (2 bed / 2 bath)

however I would like to arrive on the 23rd. Seller is offering to add the 23rd for $200 more. I understand that's an OK rate but I was hoping for like $100.

I'm thnking of just renting a campsite for that day for $57. (review says has clean showers/toilets..and it might be dedicated to that lone camp site rental) My other option is to check with friends who are also staying in NMB and see if they'll let me use their shower.. or I guess i could do a planet fitness signup for the shower and none of my friends would know I was doing a budget thing..

Right now my first two thoughts are 1>check with the seller and ask if they can do any better letting them know my alternative about the campsite..

2> contact wyndham directly via phone call and tell them i'm staying there under the sellers name as a guest and ask if there is a way i can get there a day early and pay for a room for that day at a discount.

and of course see what ideas you guys have..

Which one to choose between Emirates 777 and Lufthansa A380

Which of these flights do you think is better for traveling from Delhi, India to Seattle, USA?Emirates:

  1. New Delhi to Dubai via Boeing 777-300ER (3.5 hours)
  2. Dubai to Seattle via Boeing 777-300ER (14.5 hours)
  3. This one has a layover in Dubai for 3.5 hours

Lufthansa

  1. New Delhi to Munich via Airbus Industrie A380-800 Pax (8.25 hours)
  2. Munich to Seattle via Airbus A350-900 (359) (10.25 hours)
  3. This one has a layover in Munich for 9.5 hours

I've heard that Emirates is better than Lufthansa but A380 is better than Boeing 777. I am not getting Emirates A380 for my desired date, so these are the only two options I have.

Lisboa to Cascais Day Trip

Thinking of doing a day trip (public transportation) from Lisboa to Cascais. Would love to walk alot and do some hikes. I'd really like to see some cliffs and see Boco do Inferno. Would like it to be day filled with walking and seeing the sites along with stops for a cold beer and good bites to eat throughout. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, is Estoril or any other towns along the coast worth a stop.

Safe destination for a two week trip as a single woman to just go and relax on a beach?

Life has gotten really, really stressful, and I’d like to take two to three weeks to go and rent an airbnb by the sea and spend some time reconnecting with myself and relaxing. I want to go somewhere sandy, sunny, with a warm sea to swim in, with a low cost of living so I won’t be spending too much on food and accommodation or travel by taxi or public transport, but also somewhere cheap. I love Romania for cheap, amazing food, and Cyprus for the beach, though it’s more expensive, but not sure how I’d feel as a single woman alone in either location. I live in the UK so Europe is cheaper to fly to but three weeks really cheap somewhere further away might be worth the price of flights!

Any suggestions?

Trip would be August/September.

Can anyone help a desperate bunch of high school seniors plan for a self-coordinated senior trip during Late June/ Early July?

As the title mentioned, the seniors in my high school would like to have our own senior trip, as unfortunately our senior trip for our school was cancelled. The people within my friend group are all very close, as we are sort of like a second family to one another, so we really wanted to spend some time together before we all head off to college.

  • Now to get down to the important details:
  • Where we live: New York City
  • Duration of trip: 3 days 2 nights(preferably)
  • Size: about 25 students
  • Time: late June/ early July
  • Destination: not too far from NYC at most 6 hour bus ride.
  • Interest of Destination: Anything as long as it’s fun.
  • Budget: we want to keep the trip under $300 a person so max budget around $7500. ( I know it’s a tight budget for 25 people but keep in mind that all we need is 5-6 total rooms a night, we are also willing to raise the budget if the activities are worth it)

I know it’s a lot that we’re asking for, but any recommendations will be appreciated.

Shoestring travel China 2024

Planning a 2 month trip to China from August to October. I can imagine eateries and transport is affordable and comparable to South East Asian Countries, but I guess I’m more interested in accommodation. Me and my partner would be sharing any room, but generally avoid hostels as they tend to be more expensive compared to sharing a room in most countries we’ve travelled to. What would be some good sources to book cheaper types of accommodation like home-stays and guesthouses, and roughly how much do they tend to cost? It would be great to get both an average for inside and outside the cities. I know it’s unhelpful to not specify exactly where we plan on going but we are roughly inclined on starting in Guangzhou and making our way to Sichuan passing Guanxi and Guizhou on the way. Would also appreciate any recommendations for ‘offbeat’ places, I hate using such words but it’s the only way I can think to describe places less ravaged by commercial mass tourism, which I can imagine is somewhat something to avoid in a country of 1.5 billion people with a very big domestic tourist industry. Lastly, would it be foolish to avoid other favourite places in China such as Beijing / Shanghai? Thank you in advance.

Booking.com flights - worth the risk?

I know OTAs have a seriously bad rep on here, but I’m in a dilemma and I’d love some thoughts.

Looking to fly LHR - MEX one way Jan next year. I’ve found a flight on Skyscanner, bookable through Booking.com (and therefore the dreaded GoToGate) from CDG (Paris) - MEX for £253 (plus an extra £40 for their “flexible booking”, if this makes a difference). I would add a cheap flight from London - Paris with enough time for self transfer, around £45 right now, so £300-£350 total.

The alternative is booking direct with the airline, Aeromexico, or BA, as everyone says to do, for a whopping £1,200.

I know everyone here hates GoToGate and OTAs with a passion - but what would you do? The saving is so significant that I can’t help but find myself very tempted to take the risk…
