Shiba FAQ
1) Why is my shiba really itchy? For previous discussion on this topic, checkout this thread or this thread.
2) How do I find a reputable Shiba breeder? The National Shiba Club of America maintains a listing of reputable Shiba breeders across the US. If you love dogs, please do not buy from a puppy mill or a backyard breeder.
3) My shiba doesn't seem to eat when I put food out, are they okay? While loss of appetite can be indicative of a problem, some shibas like to nibble throughout the day instead of eating in one sitting. If you have this type of shiba, leave food out at all times, they will eat when they want. However, monitor their weight and adjust accordingly if they begin to eat too much. This behavior is also common when shibas are in a new environment or separated from their primary caretaker(s).
4) My shiba spends a lot of time licking/grooming themselves, is this normal? While over-grooming may be indicative of allergies or other skin problems, shibas can spend a lot of time cleaning and manicuring themselves. This behavior is normal. Neurotic licking and biting to the point of hair-loss or scabbing is not normal and should be referred to a veterinarian.
5) Why does my shiba take a long time to defecate on walks? Shibas often will not "go" near their home. The farther they are from home, the more likely they will. Sometimes they will have a common area that's used with frequency, once you've identified that area take them there.
6) If you're the caretaker of a new shiba and you're looking for advice, please use the search feature. These questions are asked frequently, there is a wealth of information going back many years. You will receive the greatest amount of advice with a simple search. Feel free to ask anyway, but historically these questions are ignored by the majority of our community due to their frequency.
7) My shiba seems sick and/or their health seems different, what should I do? Veterinarians spend many years of their lives training to become experts so they can help in these situations - go see one! Even if a vet did respond, without seeing the dog in person a diagnosis will be lacking at best. This community is not meant for medical advice, any advice you receive is likely going to be poor, misleading, or blatantly wrong.
8) I would like socialize and train my shiba, where can I learn? Visit /r/Dogtraining, they can get you started, give you tips for specific behaviors, and recommend other sources to develop these skills.

Hello, just looking for some basic advice. I'm wondering if my 6 yr old Shiba sleep can outside at this temperature without being uncomfy? We live in the mountains so it drops at lowest 38 F, and it can get pretty windy. Hes a pure bred Shiba but I still have my worries for him, especially since he spent most of his life sleeping inside at night. We're having lots of construction done inside the house right now so l'd like him to stay clear for now. But that also means making him sleep outside for a pretty long while. Can anyone give me some advice on if he'll be okay?
This is a really sad post to write but I am looking for a new home for our beloved Shiba Inu, Otter! He’s 7 years old and generally a well behaved, if not quirky, dog. He can be very ornery, which is normal for the breed. He had a really hard time when we welcomed our son but eventually leveled out when our son started walking. I am now pregnant again and things have taken a turn. He is showing lots of signs of crippling anxiety and causing a lot of stress to the whole family. My husband and I work full time and can’t imagine how we’ll make it work with another baby - especially when I felt I needed to watch interactions very closely as he was borderline aggressive towards infants.
We recently had him seen at the vet to make sure he’s healthy and have tried a lot of different methods to make it work, but I think he is just not a good dog for really young children.
He loves children that are a little older! Even older toddlers he does really well with - except for stealing their food 😂. But I must stress he is NOT meant for a home with babies.
Please feel free to reach out if you or someone you know is interested in giving him the loving home he deserves. We’d really like to set him up with a new home and would love to avoid shelters at all costs.
We’re in the Albuquerque area.
I’ve been doing a lot of research on Shiba Inus, and I feel like they would be a great fit for me, my boyfriend, and our two young cats. However, the one concern holding me back is my boyfriend’s worry that a Shiba might “flip a switch” one day and harm the cats or other animals because they were originally bred as hunting dogs.
I completely understand where he’s coming from, but I also know that’s not how it works. Raising a Shiba around cats and properly socializing them from a young age is key to teaching them how to coexist peacefully.
For those of you who have experience raising a Shiba puppy with pre-existing cats, I would love to hear your thoughts! Have you successfully integrated a Shiba into a multi-pet household? What tips or strategies worked for you to ensure harmony? Any advice or personal stories are greatly appreciated!
I currently have a 2 yo female cream Shiba Inu. She is fairly nervous around other humans and can sometimes be same sex aggressive to larger dogs, otherwise loves to socialize. My wife and I are considering adopting a 4 month old Australian Cattle female and we’re wondering if anyone has any experience with the combination or breed. Any advice is welcome and appreciated, even if it’s not what we want to hear. We realize the combo has the potential to be problematic and would not want to place either dog in distress, possibly ruining their chance to live peaceful happy lives.
A sheeb off leash and not running away?? Crazy! Lots of training and time put into this one. Love her so much. My best friend right here. And to those complaining on my last post about her being properly trained on a prong, this one’s for yall;)
Crazy to imagine, right? Here’s us together. 6 years old, got her from Japan back in 2018 at 3 months old. For context, i’m a dog trainer and have worked with dogs for 8+ years and have medical reasons for needing a service dog & have had one before her. This little lady started alerting me at like 6 months old and we started training her! My crazy good little girl.
Hello everyone, long time lurker first time poster.
Some backstory: my Shiba is 8 years old and I've had her since she was a few months. We've been through so much together, and we've built an amazing relationship over the years.
This last Sunday, 01/14 she had her first injury which was a torn nail after rough play. It was painful, but it got vet treatment immedietly. Pain meds, cone, and a bandage. Everything seemed fine with the bandage on, but after we took it off she kept licking the injury. We had to put a sock and a cone, and there was a ton of drama as I'm sure you all can imagine. Last night was pretty rough, she got the sock off and refused to let me pick her up. We gave her space, she hid under my bed the whole night.
Today, she's still going after her foot but what is killing me is that she's scared of me. Anytime I approach her, she thinks I'm going to try and put a sock on her. She runs away and starts hiding.
Has anyone experienced this or something similar with their shibas? I've been sick with the flu on top of all this and I've just been bawling non-stop because it feels like I've lost her, and we've both been so uncomfortable this whole week.
Thank you!
