Shiba FAQ

1) Why is my shiba really itchy? For previous discussion on this topic, checkout this thread or this thread.

2) How do I find a reputable Shiba breeder? The National Shiba Club of America maintains a listing of reputable Shiba breeders across the US. If you love dogs, please do not buy from a puppy mill or a backyard breeder.

3) My shiba doesn't seem to eat when I put food out, are they okay? While loss of appetite can be indicative of a problem, some shibas like to nibble throughout the day instead of eating in one sitting. If you have this type of shiba, leave food out at all times, they will eat when they want. However, monitor their weight and adjust accordingly if they begin to eat too much. This behavior is also common when shibas are in a new environment or separated from their primary caretaker(s).

4) My shiba spends a lot of time licking/grooming themselves, is this normal? While over-grooming may be indicative of allergies or other skin problems, shibas can spend a lot of time cleaning and manicuring themselves. This behavior is normal. Neurotic licking and biting to the point of hair-loss or scabbing is not normal and should be referred to a veterinarian.

5) Why does my shiba take a long time to defecate on walks? Shibas often will not "go" near their home. The farther they are from home, the more likely they will. Sometimes they will have a common area that's used with frequency, once you've identified that area take them there.

6) If you're the caretaker of a new shiba and you're looking for advice, please use the search feature. These questions are asked frequently, there is a wealth of information going back many years. You will receive the greatest amount of advice with a simple search. Feel free to ask anyway, but historically these questions are ignored by the majority of our community due to their frequency.

7) My shiba seems sick and/or their health seems different, what should I do? Veterinarians spend many years of their lives training to become experts so they can help in these situations - go see one! Even if a vet did respond, without seeing the dog in person a diagnosis will be lacking at best. This community is not meant for medical advice, any advice you receive is likely going to be poor, misleading, or blatantly wrong.

8) I would like socialize and train my shiba, where can I learn? Visit /r/Dogtraining, they can get you started, give you tips for specific behaviors, and recommend other sources to develop these skills.

Best Shiba breeders New England/NY area?

Looking for a reputable Shiba breeder on the east coast, NYC and up (we live on the Vermont border). Reputable to us means answers questions honestly, will allow us to visit, has real certificates of testing of dogs against glaucoma, dysplasia and anything else, sends photos of the actual puppies not stock photos, breeds for temperament (playful, social and socializes puppies even before they go to a new home), as well as looks. Anything else experienced shiba owners feel I should ask? Any recommendations? Any breeders to steer clear of? we do not want heartbreak.. Thank you for the opportunity to ask and for all the cute shiba photos..

Medication for super anxious shiba and vet visits?

Hi everyone,

My first post! I have a 2.5 year old female shiba who is anxious in general, but especially at the vet. Before the last attempted visit a year ago, I gave my pup gabentin and trazodone, night before and 2 hours prior the visit -- and her anxiety cut right through it!

The vet said it's because she wasn't given a high enough dose, so they sold me more trazodone and gabapentin yesterday. When I got home, I realized my dog had taken the maximum dose previously -- and the vet can't go any higher.

Has anyone done the chill protocol with their dog? Gabapentin, melatonin and acepromzine orally. I've read not-great things about the last one.

If anyone has had success with any other method/s, please let me know!

Thanks so much!

Shiba Inu help

Good Morning!

I was wondering if anyone knew of reputable Shiba Inu breeders near Michigan. Would love to be able to drive and see the pups before buying, but everyone I find is 8 hour drive away.

Any help is appreciated as I almost drove 8 hours already but found out the seller was a scam.

Thanks,

Southern California Shiba Inu Adoption/ Rescue

Hello! I'm looking to adopt a Shiba Inu again. My Shiba recently passed away, and I had her for a good 13 years (she was almost 15) and I think I'm ready to start another journey with a puppy or young Shiba. Since I haven't looked in a while, I'm wondering how others are adopting their Shibas lately, specially in Southern California. Thanks.

True energy levels later in life?

I am going over potential new dog breeds.

I have experience with dogs from vizsla's to Italian mastiffs to shepherds, to huskies in dog walking/training. I owned mostly APBT, and terrier adjacent type dogs all being rescues.

I typically walk 8-12 miles a day (I have a lot of time on my hands) except for colder winter months (Why shiba's are high on the list, my next dog HAS to be winter friendly and preferred to be smaller/medium sized ) I have training experience with high energy dogs as well aloof dogs.. I am fairly confident in those abilities and my knowledge on socialization etc.. However I would love to have a companion i can take all over, and go on many loong walks a day regards of hot or cold, and possibly teach to run by a bike for times when i am going to town to drop of mail or something.

I don't care really about them being dog friendly (I do not do dog parks and the dogs that I allow to interact with my dogs have to be of a certain standard, I don't set my dog up to fail) And I am as a rule a loner, I am home all day and I walk and jog a lot as stated above.

I kind of ranted and expanded my question, but basically, I hear, and read that these dogs do not run out of energy, however most of the time when I read this they are puppies. How much energy do they have say 3-6 years into their life? Would they be good with that much walking and traveling beside bike for several several miles? I am basically just looking for a cold friendly smaller dog that has a large output of energy throughout life. I am trying to decide between a shiba and a collie (I truly want a Jindo but that's just impossible to find) I know collies are great easy dogs and have high energy, but if i can I think I prefer to stay little smaller and shiba's seem to be the highest energy in that size range, and I don't like the way collies look but that's a very small factor in my decision.

Anyways to anyone who managed to get through this disaster of a question and reply thanks so much :)

Potty training struggles

This is my handsome boy Bambino. He’s getting much better at not going potty in the house but if he’s not in his crate, he won’t bother to hold his pee. It’s not that he can’t, he holds it when he’s in his crate, but if we let him walk around he’ll just pop a squat wherever he is and pee.

How do I discourage this behavior?
