Shiba FAQ
1) Why is my shiba really itchy? For previous discussion on this topic, checkout this thread or this thread.
2) How do I find a reputable Shiba breeder? The National Shiba Club of America maintains a listing of reputable Shiba breeders across the US. If you love dogs, please do not buy from a puppy mill or a backyard breeder.
3) My shiba doesn't seem to eat when I put food out, are they okay? While loss of appetite can be indicative of a problem, some shibas like to nibble throughout the day instead of eating in one sitting. If you have this type of shiba, leave food out at all times, they will eat when they want. However, monitor their weight and adjust accordingly if they begin to eat too much. This behavior is also common when shibas are in a new environment or separated from their primary caretaker(s).
4) My shiba spends a lot of time licking/grooming themselves, is this normal? While over-grooming may be indicative of allergies or other skin problems, shibas can spend a lot of time cleaning and manicuring themselves. This behavior is normal. Neurotic licking and biting to the point of hair-loss or scabbing is not normal and should be referred to a veterinarian.
5) Why does my shiba take a long time to defecate on walks? Shibas often will not "go" near their home. The farther they are from home, the more likely they will. Sometimes they will have a common area that's used with frequency, once you've identified that area take them there.
6) If you're the caretaker of a new shiba and you're looking for advice, please use the search feature. These questions are asked frequently, there is a wealth of information going back many years. You will receive the greatest amount of advice with a simple search. Feel free to ask anyway, but historically these questions are ignored by the majority of our community due to their frequency.
7) My shiba seems sick and/or their health seems different, what should I do? Veterinarians spend many years of their lives training to become experts so they can help in these situations - go see one! Even if a vet did respond, without seeing the dog in person a diagnosis will be lacking at best. This community is not meant for medical advice, any advice you receive is likely going to be poor, misleading, or blatantly wrong.
8) I would like socialize and train my shiba, where can I learn? Visit /r/Dogtraining, they can get you started, give you tips for specific behaviors, and recommend other sources to develop these skills.

So we basically have adopted a stray that jumped into Mt husband's vehicle. We have had her almost 2 months. The vet thinks she is part shiba. Very sweet girl. The only thing she does that is annoying as f is just yelping at you for no particular reason. Is this just normal behavior? Is it something they can be trained to not do?
I’m looking for a new collar for Franklin (dog tax will be paid in comments). His current collar is really matting the fur around his neck. Most of the anti-matting collars I’ve seen are pretty narrow and I’m not sure if that would work with the Tractive tracker I have on his collar.
Here’s the weird part: this is my second Shiba. My first one lived for 15.5 years and never had an issue with fur matting. Is there something that can make one dog—from the same breed—more susceptible to matting than another (despite hygiene, Frank is very clean)? Or is it just the collars I’ve chosen? That answer isn’t as important to me as finding a new collar. I can live with that particular mystery.
I've been having issues for a while now. I always take out my Shiba before bed to go potty. She RARELY goes when I take her out at night. It's gotten frustrating and I started only taking her out for 15-20 minutes and if she doesn't go then she will just wait until the morning (unless she wakes me up to go during the night which she never does). I had a friend watch her for a weekend and my mom has watched her and she is fine with them. She goes out before bed every single time for them. And it's not the area I take her because she has gone there millions of times. There are some times she will go down like she's about to pee and something will distract her and she gets back up and starts roaming around again... so I know there are times she does have to go. I feel like she looks to them like her leader and just thinks of me as no respect or whatever (not sure how to explain it). It's almost to the point where I don't even want to take her out before bed. Am I doing something wrong or should I be doing something different?
When ever I roll my ottoman, or computer chair he goes nuts and starts barking intensively at the wheels. Anyone experience this!? He was never hurt that I am aware of.
I’m thinking of getting a Shiba Inu. Recently moved in a small apartment and usually work 10 hours a day. Just want to know more about these fury friends and how demanding they are. Cheers!
We lost our male Shiba a few years ago, so it's been a while since my Shiba had a companion. She’s not particularly fond of puppies and is also very selective with other dogs. She’ll only socialize for about three seconds before returning to her usual aloof, independent self. She’s also very territorial with me—she doesn’t like it when other pets or people come near. But I know there's hope because she was able to welcome my partner into our home, and they've become the best of friends. I know it will take time for her to accept the new puppy, but I’m hopeful. The puppy isn’t fully vaccinated yet, so we can't take them on walks. Right now, I’d just be happy if they could coexist. My shiba also recently welcomed a new cat. They don’t play or interact much, but they’re very civil with each other.
anyone else’s shiba just likes to scream at you randomly lol?
i don't know!
My Shiba is 3 months old....
Every time I get home from work she's so loud and jumping around and greed's me crazy she even pees herself a little 😂 but when my man gets home she just check on him (gives him a weird look) and goes back to her place 😅
Dosen't matter where I am she's always with me and dosen't come when my man calls her... I need to tell her to go 🤦🏼♂️ otherwise she wouldn't even bother to turn her head 🗣️
I assume that she likes me more... I'm not surprised tho we do a lot's of activities together and training as well 😌 socializing with other etc but he's with her more than I am 🤷🏻♂️
This is my first Shiba and I want her to be a lovely companion which she already is but I kinda feel bad for my man being "left alone"
you can touch my head I put my ears down S
Any advice for first time Shiba owner? I do have a lot of experience with dogs but this one....IS A NEXT LEVEL 🤣
I have her like 3 weeks and we already learned few tricks and started to socialize with other dogs 🐕 she's very smart but testing my patience.... U can tell by the way she's looking at me🤦🏼♂️
For those who have 2 shibas, does 1 shiba shed more than the other?
I have two (6 y/o red female and 2 y.o b/t boy) but boy sheds 5x more than her. It's insane. When I take them to the groomers, my female always comes out nicely deshedded / groomed. My boy, they take the FULL 2 hours and they can never get all the loose fur out (also the loose fur sticks to his body)
I gave him a bath yesterday (destroyed my shower lol). Furminated/brushed him for 20 minutes pre-bath. Used deshedding shampoo and deshedding conditioner. Blew dry him AND HE WAS SO PATCHY afterwards. Brushed him out for 20 minutes after his fur was dry. Today, had to brush him out again.
I'm not new the whole shiba shedding thing. But this boy --- i swear his fur regenerates as I am brushing him lol.
Exactly what you read. My dog (rescue so age unknown) is a male Shiba that when excited, spins in circles, and poops… so I’ve just thought he was a seriously weird little man and love him the same. But my husband today sends me an instagram reel of a Shiba getting excited, spinning in circles, and poop flying out once again.
SO MY QUESTION IS CHAT…
Is this normal Shiba shit? (pun intended lol) Or is this like a little weird thing some weird little dogs just do at weird little times?
Appreciate any form of response. Happy redditing
Just adopted this sweet 3yo sesame girl. She’s affectionate and happy but pretty shy because she’s never been a pet 🥰. Parents are from Ukraine and the Czech Republic, so we thought about those countries for naming suggestions - something with 2 syllables that I won’t be embarrassed shouting down the road 😂🤣. Suggestions we have so far are Coco, Tinka (from Katinka) and Laika (the cosmonaut dog) but we’re out of ideas. Anything jump out at you shiba parent redditors? Our previois shiba was a boy called NikNak.
