Shiba FAQ

1) Why is my shiba really itchy? For previous discussion on this topic, checkout this thread or this thread.

2) How do I find a reputable Shiba breeder? The National Shiba Club of America maintains a listing of reputable Shiba breeders across the US. If you love dogs, please do not buy from a puppy mill or a backyard breeder.

3) My shiba doesn't seem to eat when I put food out, are they okay? While loss of appetite can be indicative of a problem, some shibas like to nibble throughout the day instead of eating in one sitting. If you have this type of shiba, leave food out at all times, they will eat when they want. However, monitor their weight and adjust accordingly if they begin to eat too much. This behavior is also common when shibas are in a new environment or separated from their primary caretaker(s).

4) My shiba spends a lot of time licking/grooming themselves, is this normal? While over-grooming may be indicative of allergies or other skin problems, shibas can spend a lot of time cleaning and manicuring themselves. This behavior is normal. Neurotic licking and biting to the point of hair-loss or scabbing is not normal and should be referred to a veterinarian.

5) Why does my shiba take a long time to defecate on walks? Shibas often will not "go" near their home. The farther they are from home, the more likely they will. Sometimes they will have a common area that's used with frequency, once you've identified that area take them there.

6) If you're the caretaker of a new shiba and you're looking for advice, please use the search feature. These questions are asked frequently, there is a wealth of information going back many years. You will receive the greatest amount of advice with a simple search. Feel free to ask anyway, but historically these questions are ignored by the majority of our community due to their frequency.

7) My shiba seems sick and/or their health seems different, what should I do? Veterinarians spend many years of their lives training to become experts so they can help in these situations - go see one! Even if a vet did respond, without seeing the dog in person a diagnosis will be lacking at best. This community is not meant for medical advice, any advice you receive is likely going to be poor, misleading, or blatantly wrong.

8) I would like socialize and train my shiba, where can I learn? Visit /r/Dogtraining, they can get you started, give you tips for specific behaviors, and recommend other sources to develop these skills.

Trying to find a reputable breeder on east coast, feeling lost, could use help.

So my wife and I have decided on our next dog being a Shiba Inu after a lot of careful consideration. Being responsible people we started looking for reputable breeders. So after consulting the list here, https://www.shibas.org/breeders.html. I've contacted two breeders from this list, Rodel Shiba and Tengai Shiba. Rodel I was asked to call back at the end of April, and Tengai Shiba isn't accepting any additional people on their waitlist.

Looking at the guide, https://shibainucommunity.com/buyers-guide-read-before-you-shop/, I realized there might be breeders who aren't listed on the national list that are reputable breeders. Though trying to use google and various pet searches netted a lot of backyard breeders.

I figured I'd ask on the off chance there might be some recommendations for someone living in Brooklyn, NY that are within like a 3.5hr driving distance that might not be on the national breeders list, but may be reputable?

Edit:
Just for clarity, I understand that this is going to be a process with a waitlist. My goal of expanding my search isn't to circumvent waiting, but to make progress in the form of actually getting on a waitlist.

Are Shibas being aloof actually a myth?

I wanted to do a poll but that feature is not enabled in this sub.

I swear every week I see another “My Shiba is an outlier, he’s a complete cuddle bug. He loves people so much” followed with tons of comments of people saying they also have a rare affectionate Shiba with maybe a couple of commenters saying their dog is the opposite. I run in to Shibas frequently and only 1 or 2 that I met were aloof. My own boy (4 years old) loves people and is constantly begging for attention. In fact, he is way more clingy and affectionate than other breeds I’ve had. Shibas definitely can be aloof but I feel like those ones are more rare based on my own experience and what I constantly witness here. I might also just be biased.

Best Brothers

At 4yo and 3yo they are inseparable. Was initially concerned about having two of the same gender, but they ended up being perfect for each other.

Shiba's first eclipse

I used a disco ball to reflect the eclipse everywhere and he was following them all around. Loved to get a reflection on his butt.

My sheeb was ready for the eclipse

Actually he mostly wanted to eat the glasses and then licked our hands and faces when we laid in the grass to watch lol. He wasn’t sure what game we were playing but he sure appreciated that we did it on his level lol
