Shiba FAQ
1) Why is my shiba really itchy? For previous discussion on this topic, checkout this thread or this thread.
2) How do I find a reputable Shiba breeder? The National Shiba Club of America maintains a listing of reputable Shiba breeders across the US. If you love dogs, please do not buy from a puppy mill or a backyard breeder.
3) My shiba doesn't seem to eat when I put food out, are they okay? While loss of appetite can be indicative of a problem, some shibas like to nibble throughout the day instead of eating in one sitting. If you have this type of shiba, leave food out at all times, they will eat when they want. However, monitor their weight and adjust accordingly if they begin to eat too much. This behavior is also common when shibas are in a new environment or separated from their primary caretaker(s).
4) My shiba spends a lot of time licking/grooming themselves, is this normal? While over-grooming may be indicative of allergies or other skin problems, shibas can spend a lot of time cleaning and manicuring themselves. This behavior is normal. Neurotic licking and biting to the point of hair-loss or scabbing is not normal and should be referred to a veterinarian.
5) Why does my shiba take a long time to defecate on walks? Shibas often will not "go" near their home. The farther they are from home, the more likely they will. Sometimes they will have a common area that's used with frequency, once you've identified that area take them there.
6) If you're the caretaker of a new shiba and you're looking for advice, please use the search feature. These questions are asked frequently, there is a wealth of information going back many years. You will receive the greatest amount of advice with a simple search. Feel free to ask anyway, but historically these questions are ignored by the majority of our community due to their frequency.
7) My shiba seems sick and/or their health seems different, what should I do? Veterinarians spend many years of their lives training to become experts so they can help in these situations - go see one! Even if a vet did respond, without seeing the dog in person a diagnosis will be lacking at best. This community is not meant for medical advice, any advice you receive is likely going to be poor, misleading, or blatantly wrong.
8) I would like socialize and train my shiba, where can I learn? Visit /r/Dogtraining, they can get you started, give you tips for specific behaviors, and recommend other sources to develop these skills.

Background:
My 14-year-old dog, Dexter, is recovering from a spinal injury (herniated disc) that happened 7 weeks ago. He has been making amazing progress.
The Problem:
He has suddenly become restless at night when we go to the bedroom. He has slept in our bedroom his entire life without issue. He has a crate with a soft bed that he voluntarily sleeps in during the day, both inside the bedroom and in the living room. However, ever since his last acupuncture session (which was more intense than the previous ones), he refuses to settle in the bedroom at night.
As soon as we all go to bed, he starts scratching at the crate to be let out. If I let him out, he doesn’t settle in the room—he goes to the door and insists on leaving. If we let him go, he walks to the living room, sits down, or lies down—but doesn’t sleep.
For the past few nights, we have let him sleep in his crate in the living room, where he settles and sleeps through the night without issue. But as soon as morning comes, he voluntarily walks into the bedroom and sleeps in the crate there as if nothing ever happened.
What Changed?
The only major change before this started was his last acupuncture session, which was more intense than usual. My wife said they used more needles and left them in longer.
Has Anyone Experienced This? What Worked for You?
Thanks in advance.
Hey y’all, I adopted this sweet baby Teddy last week from a family who could no longer care for him and I am really struggling for solutions on how to treat his allergies and hotspots.
My previous shibs had allergies but they were resolved w/ Cytopoint. His vet this time recommended Apoquel since it works asap but honestly it really hasn’t helped. He’s still itchy all the time and wakes me up at night w/ that hyperventilating allergy thing dogs do.
I genuinely feel so bad and really am struggling here on a solid course of action for this little dude. I’m not sure if I should give Cytopoint a shot again or if anyone has had success with anything else - I ordered some of those Dog is Human chews multivitamins but still waiting for those to arrive!
Also what size would you recommend? He’s 22lbs and he’s just about full grown. I can’t really measure his neck because he won’t let me.
I also got him a surgical suit, but I haven’t tried it on him yet. I have two concerns, one is actually get it on him. And the second is how much protection it actually provides. Any experience with surgical suits are also welcomed. Thanks 😊
Has this happened to anyone's else's Shiba pup? I heard it could be too rich for my puppy but I was recommended bully sticks for teething. Does anyone have teething alternatives?
Lets just say crate training is still progress
He was in his bed last night, and when I woke up today he was snuggling himself in my arms. 😂
I know it’s usual for shibs to shed however mine is shedding a lot😐 just wondering if it’s common across the breed
