Revit for small classroom renovations?

I’m currently working in an AV design/installation department for a university. The majority of our projects consist of designing and installing new audio visual systems in existing classrooms. There typically isn’t an architect involved, since there aren’t any other room renovations happening other than our AV installation. I currently create our drawing sets with AutoCAD, but I’m considering making a change to Revit. My drawing sets are used by our electrical contractors, as well as our internal AV installation technicians. All I’m provided is a PDF floor plan showing walls. No architectural Revit model. I use AutoCAD to insert device, electrical and data symbols on the floor plan, and often have to draw my own RCP. I create wall elevations and sections from scratch. I have many standard details I’ve drawn in AutoCAD. I create multiple schedules manually using AutoCAD tables. I also use AutoCAD to create single line diagrams (signal flow diagrams) and conduit risers. I’m considering the switch to Revit to help with automatically updating schedules, information/sheet management, and correlation between floor plan and wall elevations. But my concern is that only starting with the basic PDF floor plan and no architectural Revit model, I’ll be creating more work for myself than if I just stick to 2D AutoCAD. Anyone in a similar boat and can provide some advice? Thanks.

Revit 2024 - Bug Deletes Plumbing Fixtures

Anyone running into a weird Revit 2024 bug where the project randomly deletes ALL plumbing fixtures in the project?

This has happened on 3 separate projects run by 3 separate people (including myself).

At first I chalked it up to user error. But it has happened to me twice on the same project (I am the only one in the project). And it's happened twice in a separate project. You open the project one day and every plumbing fixtures family has been deleted.

Went in and changed all the families to generic models and so far haven't had any issues.

Can't find anything online that this is a known bug?

How to place reveals at the end face of a wall?

I would like to have my reveals that our built into the vertical structure of my walls to wrap around at the ends. I thought specifying wrapping at the ends would do this but still no resolve.

When will you begin using Revit 2025?

When 2024 was released, we rushed to use it because of some fratures that we deemed important to our firm. I don’t see them as too relevant today, and we still use 2023 for toposurfaces.

Now 2025 have some (extremelly basic) functionalities added to toposolids, but there are significant gains with walls, arrays, sheets and (for us it’s a big deal) STEP files.

Given that, we will test 2025 for a while, and wait at least until 2025.1 to see which bugs were on the first release, before adopting it. Even then, we’ll probably stick with 2023 for site design.

What do you think of it?

Pick Lines tool not working on edges of Filled Regions

Hi, I have some Filled Regions which I need to outline with Area Boundary Lines. They're a lot of small curved lines so doing it manually will be very time consuming. For some reason, the Pick Lines tool isn't highlighting these edge when I want to place an Area Boundary there. Any idea how to fix this?

EDIT: Found the solution, untick the 'apply area rules' box on Pick Lines.

How do you manage a design team working alongside technologists?

The firm I work for currently has the design team modelling in sketchup. And a technologies team converts into a Revit document.

I want to slowly transition the design team work work more in Revit. Should the two teams have their own Revit document and link each other's in?

Or should we create seperate worksets within one model.

I guess a concern I can think of for bigger projects is that the technology team will have 100+ sheets many with multiple views within them and if the design team also starts to create their own sheets for diagrams, PowerPoints etc. the Revit document will likely have 100s of sheets.

Also personally when I use Revit for design I will often use floors or railings to model things that are not floors or railings. I imagine that this could conflict with scheduling unless strict naming conventions are implemented.

Ultimately I really want to see less data lose between our design team and technology team. I would love to hear how others navigate this relationship.

Also am I wrong to think that our base Revit template should have all of the standard sheets with views setup with many filters applied.

Currently our office template has maybe 15 filters setup at the start.

Exact Duplicate Assembly With A Different Name Help

So I've had a problem for years at my work where I have sometimes 100s of duplicate assemblies that have to have different names. I usually end up doing hours of pdf work just renaming the sheet name in bluebeam.

The thing is I still need these exact same walls assembled in the revit project with a different assembly name. The only way I have found to do this is duplicate the wall type and have thousands of useless wall types so that revit sees them as different but this causes many other headaches.

I know people have said to use groups but I need the view and sheet creation functionality of assemblies to create my shop drawings.

Is there an add-in/plug in that can help me with this or some way around vanilla revit to make this work?

Thank you in advance I hope I can do less pdf work and useless duplication ;-;

Revit 2025 .NET 8 - Addins Chaos Ensues?

https://help.autodesk.com/view/RVT/2025/ENU/?guid=GUID-50024FD2-16BE-40BE-96E6-550294D9537D

According to this, Revit 2025 has migrated to .NET Core 8, instead of .NET Framework 4.8- up to Revit 2024. Does this mean - for all Revit programmers - all previous Revit addins must be migrated from .NET Framework 4.8 to .NET Core 8.0?

Anyone at Autodesk cares to clarify and advise?

Set Rotation parameter to object or group in a family

Hi,

I have a problem in creating an angle parameter (rotation), to be assigned to a wing in a window, specifically in managing the work planes (WP) and reference lines (RL) in relation to the object to be rotated. in detail I cannot constrain the object to the plane of the RL to perform the rotation.

thanks in advance, for any eventual tips or suggestion.

Multiple area types on the same schedule?

I'd like to create a schedule like this

UnitGEAPlot areaAmenity areaParking
1100015004501
2120017505503
etc

I already have the GEA areas drawn on an area plan. But I'm not sure how to get additional area types on the same schedule, or how to add parking spaces.

How would you schedule these curtain panels?

Hi,

I have a project where I'm struggling with Curtain Panel schedule. Right now my only solution is to put together 3-4 different schedule on a sheet, which is not entirely a bad solution but also not an elegant one as it is lacking grand totals.

Project is a tower. I have had very bad experience with curtain walls repeating in groups (they wanted to ungroup all the time upon editing) so in this project we went for typical links.

So it is ready, the tower is made up of curtain walls modeled in the shell model for non typical levels and links placed in the same model as attachment for the typical levels. I'm quite happy with this solution, generally tower shell models with lot of CW are slow but here the performance is excellent, editing each type is relatively easy. However everything has a downside as usual.

The typical links are modeled in ground floor in those models. So it does not matter if the model has that wall linked on level 40 it will report GF. I could play with the link names which is a string but it also does not work for filtering together with the non typical levels that have proper level parameter.
So now I'm basically stitching together different schedules for the typ. links and the non typ. floors.

Little explainer image: https://imgur.com/a/AlrjCpk

I'm wondering if there is any solution I did not think of?

Creating Percentages for Filled Regions

I am not even sure if this is possible but I will try my best to describe what I have and my end goal, this is to help our team with early program analysis.

I have a white filled region that is locked on all sides of a colored-filled region. We are using these for space planning. We have the white-filled region because we can give it squared edges which will give us an accurate area, while the colored-filled region is only for diagram purposes and has rounded edges to make them visually more appealing. Now for what I have created for these filled regions, I have created a detail item tag that is hosted to the white-filled region, this detail item tag pulls and presents the area of the white-filled region, along with the room name that I have inserted into the comments portion of the filled region. So mostly this detail item tag is just pulling the comment field from the white-filled region and visually presenting that data, it is doing the same for the area. I have added a 3rd field that I wanted to visually display from the White filled region and this is the "Mark" identity data. In the mark field, I am putting the programed size, what we planned for the size to be.

Now here is my problem, I can either incorporate this into the already created detail tag or I can make a new one that layers onto all of this but I want to make something that I can quickly see on top of our filled regions that will tell me what percentage our currently drawn area is over our programmed area. So mostly I need to find a way for a formula to pull numbers out of the "mark" identity data and divide it by the area. Though the filled regions live within the project not within the detail item tag, so the detail item tag family does not know what numbers will exist for the programmed space nor area, and there will be multiple different instances where this will be used for different rooms of different sizes. So how and can I create something that will show me this percentage or is it impossible?

I have tried going down the dynamo route but it quickly went over my head and it seems like filled regions behave weirdly in Dynamo as it was struggling to grab my defaulted parameters like "area" "Mark" and "Description" though at the same time dynamo seems like it could be the one to actually compare 2 numbers of a host filled region and tell me the outcome. I know this all sounds over complicated but we design in the public field where we are not just programming for a dozen or two fields, we have upwards of 100 unique spaces and duplicates of those spaces. It would be helpful for our adjacency diagrams to immediately see if the box we have stretched to accommodate a better design is 25% larger than we programmed for.

Error dynamically compiling pyRevit runtime

We're struggling bigtime with pyRevit in the last month or two. The only fix for this is to uninstall, turn off all addins, restart, reinstall, open each Revit version, the turn all the other addins back on. It's like a 20 minute process for each machine. Today's update didnt fix it. There has to be a better way.

Hi! I have prolem, I have shared parameter on view and on a sheet. Like a drawing type. I want that to update on label of the sheet automatic when I insert view to the sheet. Is that possible, like scale autotically ubdates from parameter of the view. I have problem that the label just shows blue "?" that I can write the drawing type.
I have shared parameter as a text and it is cheked in views and on sheets. And it is added as a sharedparameter to label. Also I have included the parameter on a family of the sheet.

How to set up a project for collaboration, as a consultant?

Hi all! Apologies in advance for asking low brow questions! I’m a consultant working on an architectural model, that is workshared amongst the firm and then sent out each week to consultants with the building updates. I am responsible for showing EQ plans and EQ utility plans, and corresponding schedules. This is where my stupid question comes in; how should I set up my project if they are sharing an updated model with us each week? As the arch firm has explained to me, it is supposed to be detached from central, saved as a local file, and then the arch firm can eventually link it in, with all the other consultants plans.

My workflow in earlier SD stages was to open the plans I needed from their revit model, export to new file, transfer project standards to my new file, import the arch firm’s sheet index, and just build out my required sheets from there.

This was a process I ended up using, because I didn’t really have the time to figure out something better and no one at my firm can really support, so I just went with it out of necessity and lack of any better understanding. The thing I don’t understand, that makes me feel like there must be a better way, is what happens if the building base changes wildly from one week to the next? How I reflect those changes? Instead of exporting plans to a new file, and creating my project from there, should I be linking their model or something similar? I feel like an idiot and have too many other projects to really give this the time I need to get it sorted. The BIM manager at the arch firm, hasn’t really been supportive or helpful, which is fine, I just still need answers.

Thanks in advance, hope this makes sense.

I’ve got experience doing design work in revit, less setting up a project and managing best practices for sharing and collaborating.

Synchronizing Central Model Issues.

Apologies if not using the correct flair.

My office has been using Revit for the past 12 years or so, and we transitioned to using Revit 2023 in January (We stay a year behind in case new releases need to patched or anything like that.) So far, everything in 2023 has been ok, but both my coworkers and I have started to experience issues with our Local and Central models.

For example, my coworker was working in a local copy of a workshared model- he moved an object across the model, synchronized and saved, and closed out. The next time he was working on that project, the object was back to where it was originally- even though he had synchronized and saved. Similar things have happened to me, and we both thought we just forgot to save, or something like that.

Is anyone else encountering similar issues? Is there any fix for this?

Thanks!

Anybody know of any YouTube tutorials to model something like this?

Would love to make a roof structure like this in revit, but am not entirely sure how to start. Would I just make multiple domes and cut with voids? Any references would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Blender archiviz

Is there anyone using blender to do visualization? Worked in twin-motion/escape before. But decided to do some level-up for my skills and wanna try some more difficult program.

I did some import model to blender today, it always group my window and door and other family model to one object., so i think, how im gonna apply different material and texture on one object (which should be more than one)(example: door handle and door were two objects in revit, but in blender is just one)without mapping or stuff

AI in Revit - first test

I just tested this out of curiosity, and wanted to share.
No image embedding on this sub, so here's an imgur link

(I hid the name of the software, to avoid advertising. But it was fairly easy to install and test.)

I LOVE Dynamo, so i'm sorry to declare this: I see a great future for automation of all the tedious stuff in Revit day-to-day modeling and data extraction. With AI, there'll be no more wax-on, wax-off, just the ability to ask precise questions.

-Nice day to all of you, sun is out, laterz.....

Autodesk construction cloud

Quick question , started working for a GC and they want to transition into Autodesk products since everything is in house .

Would it be worth it to use Build and Collaborate pro ? The main idea is to do clash detection to spot for issues during the process. My experience iv only done this through collaborate pro or use of navis works .

From reading online Build is mostly for construction coordination .

I know GC has in house workers so the idea is they would use collaborate pro as well to host models etc .

Two pole breaker on single phase 208 panel fed from 208 three phase panel

R23. I used to use Revit all the time 18 to 21 but have been on AutoCAD 100% since ... until today. I have a single phase panel that's fed from a 3 phase panel. I try to put a 2 pole (single phase 208) breaker in the panel and it's acting super weird. The panel space number becomes replicated in the top pole (see 13,14) and is duplicated to the other side of the panel (see 14,15 and the pole below on both sides).

Is this due to a bad template? Bad panel family? I'm going off the company library so I'm guessing something got set up wrong somewhere. Googling the issue hasn't yielded any results. Any idea what's going on here?

Changing shared elevation for a whole project

We have a project where I need to move the shared coordinate of every building 50mm up. Obviously it is not as simple as that because its a project where each building has multiple site locations, mirrored instances, more than 100 files. Project is on ACC.
Is there really no other way to do this but reset the shared coordinate in every file, download the models, publish the coordinates then reupload all the models and remap all the links? My main problem is when I open a model with multiple site locations that revit is not allowing me to switch to a mirrored state so I can move the survey point.
There must be a better way.

Rotate a nested family that is also parametric to change size

I have a shelf that is supposed to be able to rotate 15 degrees. For the life of me, I can’t get the darn thing to work.

I have 20 yes in Revit & am not a dummy, but I sure feel like one.

I’ve made it work plane based, I’ve unblocked stay vertical (or whatever it says), I’ve constrained to a constrained reference plane. Nada.

Any help is appreciated
