Good high school books for pharma?

Hi, I'm a Year 12 student in the UK and I'm interested in doing pharmacology at university. My school is telling me I should do wider reading around the subject however I can't find any good books that aren't either textbooks or about recreational drugs in general. Would anyone be able to recommend a book for me? I'm more interested in the molecular side of things so something pharmacokinetics/dynamics-related would be nice.

Can’t decide between attending Husson, UNE or going out of state.

TL;DR at bottom.

So after working as a CPhT for almost 3 years, I’ve decided to attend pharmacy school. I was born and raised in Maine and have lived here all my life, and the two options for pharmacy schools are Husson University in Bangor or the University of New England in Biddeford/Portland (two campuses and soon all PharmD students will attend in Portland). The curriculum is exactly the same as Husson actually uses UNE’s curriculum since attendance for PharmD is so low. I am much closer to Husson (30 minute drive) as I live and work at Walmart in the same county. However I have lived in Portland before and really enjoyed it as it’s the only legitimate city in Maine so lots of amenities. Plus I have family all over the state including Portland. The only reason I’m considering Husson is that I have an awesome team at my pharmacy and I would have to move. My rent is only $900/month with all utilities included which is huge in Maine since heating in the winter is super expensive as you have to have heat for 8 months out of the year. Plus, I’m a 3 minute drive from my pharmacy. But UNE would be great as it has much more to do for recreation and has an Asian market which is important for my wife as she’s from Thailand and we don’t eat American food unless we eat out. Plus, my sister just landed a residency at Maine General Hospital since she just graduated from medical school. Haven’t compared the tuition yet but I assume it’s pretty comparable and I know both schools offer a boatload of scholarships since attendance is so low at both schools. My third option is going out of state, preferably to a college near some Thai communities like Texas or Nevada so my wife can practice Buddhism (no temple in Maine that I know of) and interact with her fellow Thais. I would appreciate some advice, especially if anyone here attended either program. Thanks!

TL;DR:

Can’t choose between two schools in my home state of Maine or going out of state.

High school student considering A levels (UK)

High school student considering A levels (UK)

High school student here about to finish, can I take a pharmacy course at university with Physics,Chemistry and maths A-level? I know that biology would be more useful but the fact of the matter is I despise it. By far the worst science, far too wordy. Does physics have much of an overlap with pharmacy and can I study a course without bio?

reality check

i’m a pre pharm major at UofSc & the past year and a half i’ve had a LOT of issues outside of school that got in the way of school. i’ve failed gen chem II 2 times, im on my third retake right now. i just left my advisement appointment and she told me i wont get into uofsc pharm school because of this & that they wouldn’t even look past my transcript. she told me a lot of schools won’t look past my transcript.

i’m sobbing in my car bc i feel like suchhh a failure. i asked her if anything i’ve done both inside and outside of school can help me at all. i’ve done 2 interviews outside the country, sorority, leadership in multiple clubs, 2 jobs (one being a pharm tech). she said that once they see how many times i’ve had to retake the course shows that i wouldn’t be able to handle it. i explained to them that there was so much going on and she was like there’s no way they’ll be able to know that while looking at my application.

pharmacy is something im passionate about, but now i feel like i wont even get an interview to any school because of this. should i just give up?

Is pharmacy school feasible with a family?

I’m considering pharmacy school but I want to know if I’ll still have time for my family. I have a baby and a toddler. I like being a very involved parent. Would you say pharmacy school is more time consuming than a full time (40hrs/week) job? Is it realistic to think that I can do it and still spend a decent amount of time with my family?

Reality Check

I last minute decided to apply to a pharmacy school just to experience the application process. My grades are not even good enough to apply and I have to retake a lot of my prerequisites and have no clue who to ask for letters of rec. Despite all of this, my hopes are up and and I didn’t want that to happen as it’s not realistic that I’ll get accepted. I was hoping some of you could give me some guidance.

PharmCAS grades?

Hey guys! I am just curious about how PharmCAS calculates grades. I have an associates degree from a community college, which was about 60 credits. I will also have 6 semesters at a university. Will PharmCAS take the cumulative GPA of both schools? Or just the university, where most of the prerequisites were done?

Downward trend in GPA

Hey guys. I am finishing up this semester and getting ready to apply for fall of 2025!

I’m nervous for my application because I have a rather big drop in GPA. But, I have had family troubles that have caused it.

Back in October of 2022, my mother had what we thought was a heart attack, but turned out it was a neurological problem. Since then, she just hasn’t been the same. She will have random “episodes” and they are almost like mini strokes. I have tried to help as much as possible, which has pulled me away from school a bit, causing a rather large decrease in my GPA since my freshman year. But it really made me love pharmacy, knowing she has to take medication for the rest of her life, I am very invested in pharmacy.

I also work at a hospital as a pharmacy tech, and have for about a year now.

What I’m asking is, will this situation back up my trend in GPA? What are tips you guys have for the application regarding this? Thank you!

Got interview without applying

Hey, I'm a pre-PA student and I applied to one school's PA program. Unfortunately, I was rejected from that program, but I got an email a week later asking if I wanted to interview for the school's pharmacy program.

I thought that was kinda weird, considering I had very little in my application indicating that I would be want to go to pharmacy school. There were 3-4 other PA applicants also offered an interview. I still accepted the interview (just because why not), but now I'm wondering WHY the program had to dip into the PA applicants to offer interviews.

Has anyone experienced something like this or could offer me some insight into pharmacy programs. It's a PharmD. I see that people are saying there's around a 90% acceptance into these schools... should I pursue this career if I do get into the school or reapply as a PA?

Sorry for the multiple questions. This interview was thrown at me and I know nothing about pharmacy. I appreciate any and all insight into this from you guys. Thanks!!

Clinical pharmacy is so cool but retail pharmacy sucks, why?

I am a freshman Biochemistry student on the Pre-med track however I really don’t know what medical career I would like to pursue. I have been stuck between Optometry,Pharmacy,Medicine and Physician Assistant. I recently shadowed both a retail pharmacist at Walgreens and a Clinical pharmacist in Oncology. The retail pharmacist just seemed overall really stressed and unhappy. They weren’t mean to me or anything but I could just tell they were stressed and not happy. The retail pharmacists responsibilities included dispensing prescription medication, checking prescriptions for accuracy, monitoring any possible drug interactions, counseling patients on use of medication, overseeing pharmacy techs, and managing inventory. She said that sometimes she also gives vaccinations but I didn’t personally see her do one as no one came in for vaccinations.

I know this is like the general responsibilities for every pharmacist but retail pharmacy just seems like the medical equivalent of a manager at McDonald’s honestly. She had to answer phone calls with complaints from providers and patients. Her job is to make sure that the medication a provider prescribed doesn’t have any interactions with any other drugs the patient is taking. I guess a provider had prescribed something to a patient that could possibly interact with something else the patient was taking so the pharmacist called the provider about writing a different prescription and the provider cussed the pharmacist out even though she was just doing her job. She is also Essentially the manager of the pharmacy so anytime a patient had a problem with the pharmacy tech it is her job to deal with that patient. I witnessed about 5 patients yell at her.

Pharmacists just have so many skills and retail pharmacy doesn’t use those skills that pharmacists have. However the clinical pharmacist was a lot more interesting and honestly less stressful. The clinical pharmacist seemed overall pretty happy and less stressed. The responsibilities of the clinical pharmacist in the oncology unit includes collaborating with a team of oncologist, nurses, nurse practitioners, and other medical professionals. The clinical pharmacist actually does rounds with the oncologist and nurse practitioners and actually does physical examinations of the patients. The clinical pharmacist monitors the patient for any possible drug interactions and also provides information to the patient and their family about medication. This specific clinical pharmacist also does cancer treatment research on the side which I thought was cool. The clinical pharmacist also has the same general responsibilities of a retail pharmacist like dispensing medication. I like how clinical pharmacy allows you to provide direct patient care and it also allows a pharmacist to use all of their skills.

I am posting this because I am honestly interested in pursuing a career as a pharmacist. However I really don’t want to end up in retail pharmacy. Something I read said that all pharmacist have to start out in retail pharmacy before moving up into more specialized roles like being a pharmacist in oncology. I really don’t want to be a retail pharmacist ever in my life though I can’t name a single thing I liked about retail pharmacy but I can name many things I liked about clinical pharmacy. I’m just curious to know if this is true. Also does anyone have any tips on if I decide to pursue pharmacy school. I graduate with my EMT certification this month will I have to earn my pharmacy tech certification? Would it be possible to become a pharmacy tech in clinical pharmacy rather than retail pharmacy? Should I pursue pharmacy even though I have zero interest in retail pharmacy?

It seems like pharmacy schools are giving out interview invites like it’s Halloween…does this mean that they’re willing to accept pretty much anyone?

extended deadlines

i’m seeing a lot of school are extending their deadlines. is this because they didn’t have enough applicants or is it because they want more money (from applicants fees).

if it’s because they didn’t get enough applicants you think it’ll be “easier” to get in?

UIC vs UCincinnati

I got accepted into both, but having a hard time deciding. UIC is higher ranked however it’s in the city, large class size, classes may be difficult due it being Chicago, however great for networking. UC is more a campus vibe, small class size, on campus pediatric hospital, maybe a little bit safer than UIC. Both are about the same tuition and have hospitals on or near campus. If anyone knows more info that can help with my decision please let me know.

Low math and science gpa

Hey guys,

I plan on applying to hopefully start in fall 2025. My cumulative gpa is decent, like a 3.4. But, my math and science gpa is like a 3.0, and will probably stay the same or maybe drop a little bit after this semester. I have worked as a pharmacy tech for about a year and just got my CPht. I will also have 3 LORs from pharmacists I work with. How am I looking? I’m really nervous about not getting accepted. Thanks guys 🫶

Do you love what you do?

Hello! I am an undergrad applying to pharm school this upcoming cycle. I want to hear the opinions of pharmacists that actually enjoy their job (What field do you guys work in? How did you get there? What do you love about it? Would you do it again? Are you fairly compensated? etc.) I am tired of hearing so many negative things about pharmacy because I genuinely want to become a pharmacist and pursue what I love. Any thoughts, comments, and opinions would be very appreciated!

Northeastern University dress code

Hello! I have a stupid question really, I’m still deciding where to go and I saw that one of my choices have a dress code (which is business casual attire or scrubs) and I was wondering if NEU had something similar. Do we have to go classes in scrubs or normal attire? Thank you!

Question for ACS Gen Chem 2 Final

My prof is giving us the 2007 second semester ACS exam for our final. I’ve been able to see the test from the official ACS website for 2007 but I haven’t been able to find one that says it’s for Gen chem two or the second semester of general chemistry. Is there a difference? And if so, how can you tell?

USC vs. WesternU

I recently got admitted to both USC and WesternU for this upcoming fall. I am torn between the two schools and have less than a week to respond to USC’s admissions office.

USC is offering me about $50k in scholarship and WesternU none, this brings the tuition at USC under WesternU very slightly (~5k). I love the faculty at WesternU, they are all incredibly welcoming and compassionate; I didn’t feel the same at USC, it felt very business-y and this is the biggest issue for me. In terms of location, USC is 10 miles closer to where I live, I would be saving 10-20 minutes commuting to school everyday. I recently heard that the PA program at WesternU lost their accreditation and am super worried this may cause issues for me later down in my pharmacy career in getting an internship/ residency/ job. Any advice on this matter and how to go about picking between the two schools?
