Might get a couple of C’s my first semester, disappointed

Just started my P1 year. I had a tough time finding out my pace and what studying methods worked for me my first few weeks of pharmacy school. During our first set of exams, I did much worse than I would have liked to. I’ve been doing better now and my grades have gone up quite a bit but I’m worried that these couple of C’s will make my residency odds and whatnot worse. Am I overthinking this? The rest of my grades are A’s and B’s.

How to pay for pharmacy school

Hello,

So I'm starting oharamcy school in 2025 and they didn't give me a large enough scholarship to really pay for pharmacy school out of pocket. My tuition is about 28K andually and I need to get it decreased significantly. I'm thinking taking out a loan would be my only option, but I really do not want to be in debt.

Therefore I ask: -what outside scholarships are available.

  • are there any tuition reimbursement programs available for certain jobs upon graduating pharmacy school, or even as just working as a pharmacy technician during pharmacy school.

-would you recommend working while in pharmacy school? Does that put a strain on you? -overall what do you guys recommend i do?

APPE sites in Northern California/Central Valley

I’m a current P3 student choosing APPE sites, and unfortunately my school has provided us with very few options. Ideally I’d like to choose sites with good, understanding, and knowledgeable preceptors because a bad preceptor for 6 weeks would be awful. I have heard several horror stories from upperclassmen on their gen med and hospital rotation and do not want to fail lol. I will list some of the sites my school has to offer please comment if you have any information on any of these. Also planning on asking upperclassmen after thanksgiving break. Thanks!

Hospital:

  • Central Valley Specialty Hospital (Modesto)
  • Shriner’s Children’s Hospital (Sacramento)
  • Kaiser (Fresno)
  • Sutter Medical Center (Sacramento)
  • Sutter Memorial Medical Center (Modesto)
  • Kaiser Morse (Sacramento)
  • Kaiser (Modesto)

Gen med:

  • Dignity Health Mercy San Juan (Carmichael)
  • Central Valley Specialty Hospital (Modesto)
  • Orchard Hospital (Gridley)
  • Kaiser (Roseville)
  • Oroville Hospital (Oroville)
  • Sutter Memorial Medical Center (Modesto)
  • Adventist Health (Sonora)

Feeling Discouraged About Getting A Fellowship

I’m a P3 who applied for a few industry APPE rotations, but didn’t get any. My school is contracted with one site where an industry rotation is guaranteed, but there were only 2 spots available this year and the students chosen for them was based off a lottery system. I didn’t get that rotation either.

I’ve been feeling really discouraged about my chances of landing a fellowship now. I was hoping an industry APPE rotation would be something I could talk about during interviews and draw from as experience. Without it, I feel like I don’t have much to stand out. Looking back, I wish I had done more during my second year, but it’s too late for that now.

I did attend a ton of webinars and roundtables over the past year to learn about industry and to network. I really thought an industry APPE rotation would be the next step to solidify my interest and help me feel more prepared for applying for fellowships. I was hoping I would be able to get an industry APPE rotation. Now, I’m just sitting here feeling regretful and unsure if I should even bother applying for fellowships during my fourth year. It’s so competitive, and I don’t know what else I can do to make myself a stronger candidate at this point.

I’m not looking for pity just needed to vent. Feeling very discouraged and overwhelmed and lost. If anyone can relate or has advice on how to make the most of this situation, I’d really appreciate it.

Is there a Creighton PharmD distance graduate that I can message?

Im a current P1 student located in Washington and I'm already struggling to find IPPEs. Although I had been able to do a couple IPPEs through my connections. Without those connections I don't think I would have gotten any IPPEs done at all. I emailed most hospital contacts on Evalue and I haven't even gotten a response back. I wish they could have sent me a rejection or something. I'm would be happy with that so that I could move on and not be stuck in this in between limbo space. So now I'm thinking if it's this hard to get a hospital's response back, how are y'all graduates getting APPEs to graduate the last year of pharmacy school where they have us do 3 required APPEs in different hospital settings. Just wanting to vent a bit here and maybe get some advice from a Creighton pharmacy distance graduate.

Moving or internship

I’m an online student. I’m at a point in my P1 year where I can move to be closer to school (cross country) to take advantage of in-person opportunities, or stay where I am and get an internship with my current employer (LTC).

For context, I’ve lived where I am my entire life, so a move like this would be for more than school. My fiancé is totally down with moving, excited even, for the chance. But I love my work location, and feel a little torn between the crazy decision to move almost 3000 miles, or stay and learn within the company that I love. I can continue working as a technician even if I move.

More context, my job has a pretty big separation between techs and pharmacists. I work almost exclusively with techs, but as an intern, I would work on the pharmacist’s team instead.

Knowing what you know now, what would you do? How much is years as an intern > tech when it comes to job opportunities? I think I know the answer but I want to hear some advice. Thanks!

Changing thoughts

Why do I keep changing my career plans? I am a P4 student and initially, I wanted to do the air force pharmacist job. Before that I wanted to be a clinician. Had everything planned out and all seemed like a perfect idea. Now, after a few ambulatory care rotations, I am registered for the residency match process. Am I okay? I can’t seem to figure out exactly what I want. I’m I the only one going through this?

methenamine + macrobid

super random question but we just covered UTIs and this was never mentioned.

if a patient is taking methenamine for UTI prevention and they get a UTI while on it and are prescribed macrobid to treat, can they continue taking the methenamine or does it need to be stopped while on the macrobid??

Transferring pharmacy schools?

Is it possible to transfer pharmacy schools or is it just a waste of time ? I'm a p1 in Georgia and I want to transfer to Massachusetts because I want to move back there. I don't want to have to start over

I completely f*** up my first exams.

Hi everyone, I'm having a particularly difficult start to the session.

I scored 65% and 66% on my first exams, and another got 79%. I don't understand why I underperform like that, yet in my undergrad I had a 3.8 GPA.

What kills me is that the exams weren't that difficult, I did 15% below the average. I fought the last few years to get into the university and program I wanted, applying twice. I'm a little depressed and the last few days have been difficult psychologically, I'm afraid that I'm not good enough for this career, yet it's the only thing I see myself doing.

My confidence has taken a big hit and I feel like I'm inferior to my peers. I'm even considering quitting the gym to focus entirely on my studies, but it's my morale that's working against me.

I know it sounds like I’m begging for attention, but I just can’t talk about this with nobody, my parents are covering all my tuition and they seem so proud, and if I tell this to my classmates, I’m scared they’re gonna see me as inferior and stop working with me:(

Sorry for venting

How the absolute hell do i study for pharmacy when its a literal 9-5 and sometimes more?

I dont understand, I am now behind on the material because my university just threw at us several lectures barely related to each other and expect us to be able to revise what is up to 7 lectures a day everyday and give us exams with like 90% of the material before the semester exams, how do i deal with that?????

Inpatient vs health system rotation?

I noticed for APPEs, we get a inpatient and health system rotation but they both seem to be at a hospital? What is the difference between them? My school didn't really go into what they are different.

Hannaford Rotation

I was supposed to start my community rotation today at Hannaford… Apparently they are having IT issues and background checks are taking way longer than expected to come thru. Anyone with the same issue or works at a Hannaford Pharmacy that can shed some light on this?

A call for help

I need help! We're organizing an event, and I was tasked with creating a pharmacy-related theme or trending theme. I came up with a "Pharmasea" theme and a "chocolate factory" theme, but it seems they didn't quite like them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Questions to ask for IPPE?

Hi! I have an IPPE tomorrow and I really suck at asking questions, although I am excited about learning what different pharmacists do and what their work entails. What are some of your go-to questions to ask? I have general questions such as what made you go into this specific area of pharmacy (i.e. community)?, what is the most challenging part of your job?/what do you enjoy?, but that is basically it. I'm also not that good at coming up with questions on the fly...

Is it crazy to drop out after p1 year and pursue nursing

Basically what the title says. I’m a p1 and am actually sick from stress of pharmacy school 6/7 days of the week. I don’t think it helps that im 5 hours from home, but I digress. I completely understand that nursing school isn’t a cakewalk either, but some part of me is interested in working 3 12 hour shifts a week and calling it at that. I don’t know if pharmacy will provide me the happiness and stability I want in my life. I just have little to no classes required for nursing school and don’t want to waste 4 more years, where at that point in time I could have a doctorate degree. If I were to go to nursing, I’d definitely try and find a specialty, such as nurse anesthesiology or practitioner, but I do not know if this is even worth it. Obviously this is completely my choice, but I just wanted to hear from others if you think this is a gravely bad idea.

Thinking of leaving pharmacy school

I am thinking of applying to an AA program and leaving pharmacy school if I get in. I’m a P1 at a private school and I have been doing well so far. I have been a tech for over 10 years and work for 2 major hospitals. One I know they will hire me once I graduate (no residency) and the other I can easily get a residency at if I choose that route. I currently work at an oncology ambulatory infusion center where I work with pgy2 residents and they all look so stressed! I shadowed a CRNA a year ago and I thought anesthesia was exciting. I will always love pharmacy but the more money I want to make the further from patient care I will get (such as management or industry) and as an AA you have great earning potential and direct patient care. I knew I wouldn’t get accepted to an AA program, especially Emory’s bc they are so competitive and upon graduation I had a 2.9 gpa. If I can get into a program before my P3 year is it worth dropping out as a P2? Also is there a chance I can still get in if I have a good pharmacy school gpa?

Post Grad Plans

Hey everyone! I’m a current P4 student really on the fence about applying for a residency. My ultimate goal is to become a clinical pharmacist, with a passion specifically for ambulatory care. I feel like this is such a critical time in my career, and part of me worries I might regret not going for a residency if I don’t apply.

I have a stellar GPA (3.8) and strong work experience—I’ve been working in a pharmacy since I was 18, and at one point, I was juggling three different positions. Now, at 24, I’ve built a solid foundation, but there are some areas that lead me to self-doubt. I haven’t done much in terms of research projects, and while I’m in Rho Chi, I haven’t been very active in other organizations.

The financial aspect is also a big concern. I really want to support my mother as soon as I can, and I know residency pay can be rough—I’m actually making more as a pharmacy intern than I’d make as a resident. I’ve been considering applying to the VA in New York, since it might allow me to stay closer to home, which is also important to me.

I’m wondering if any of you have been in a similar situation or have advice for someone passionate about ambulatory care but struggling with the financial side of residency. Are there alternative paths to get into ambulatory care without a residency, or should I apply and see where it takes me? I’d really appreciate any advice or insights you could share. Thanks so much!
