What is Postnationalism?

Postnationalism or non-nationalism is the process or trend by which nation states and national identities lose their importance relative to supranational, global, and local entities. Although postnationalism is not strictly considered the antonym of nationalism, the two terms and their associated assumptions are antithetic as postnationalism is an internationalistic process.

There are several factors that contribute to aspects of postnationalism, including economic, political, and cultural elements.

Increasing globalization of economic factors, such as the expansion of international trade with raw materials, manufactured goods, and services, and the importance of multinational corporations and internationalization of financial markets, have shifted emphasis from national economies to global ones. At the same time, socio-political power is partially transferred from national authorities to supernational entities, such as multinational corporations, the United Nations, the European Union, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and NATO. In addition, media and entertainment industries are becoming increasingly global and facilitate the formation of trends and opinions on a supranational scale. Migration of individuals or groups between countries contributes to the formation of postnational identities and beliefs, even though attachment to citizenship and national identities often remains important.

On the other hand, there is also a desire for more localized, grassroots control over resources and policy. Free trade and multinational corporations are postnationalist. So is 'local food' and other movements that often push back against free trade and against those multinational corporations. It's a wide and fluid subject encompassing the entire political spectrum and has inherent conflicts. If you're looking for a simple, unified, worldview, this is not it.

There are other aspects to postnationalism including, but not limited to; cryptocurrency, social media, and linguistics.

Post-Nationalist Americans- How to Vote in the Primary and General Election

You can request your ballot at: https://www.votefromabroad.org/

In recent elections, the overseas vote has determined the winner in many close races, so your vote does actually count.

https://www.npr.org/2022/11/06/1132730832/american-citizens-voters-overseas-abroad

Also, if you know someone who was born in the US or has American parents, they can also vote in US elections.

This post is intended to be non-partisan, simply showing how to exercise your voting rights even when abroad.

Thanks!

Any American Expat Voters Here?

Just came here to say that another election is coming up. If you were born in the US, or are the child of an American, you're allowed to vote.

Those of us living abroad often forget what our families and friends back in the States are dealing with. Many of us have been lucky to go abroad for a better life. Whether you left in the 60s or yesterday, we still have a connection to that place, along with the voting rights to try and make it a bit better. It takes a modicum of effort from us, but we owe it to our families, and to the world, to submit a piece of paper once a year and do our part to make a world we want to live in.

After you register, you can sign up to get future reminders. You can also become a member of Democrats Abroad for hangouts around the world. Everyone is welcome to join, even Republicans.

By the way, if just one of your parents was American, that might qualify you for American Citizenship. You could also vote.

If you know any Americans, they would really appreciate a reminder.

Is learning multiple languages important? How to choose?

Do you all think that multi-lingualism is important to the postnationalist movement? Is it enough to rely on translations, or does that necessarily segregate people? If it is important to have shared languages, what languages are most important to learn (all else being equal)? Should we give preference to an international auxiliary language (IAL), or focus on learning other people's native languages? If an IAL is worthwhile, would you go with a ethnic language or a artificial language that attempts to be ethnically neutral?

For what it's worth, I've been really impressed with the free material on Duolingo (at least to get a basic understanding), and I noticed that they have an Esperanto course.
