This subreddit is a place where users can share or request information regarding primitive living skills. If it pertains to primitive weapons, shelters, hunting/fishing methods, fire building techniques, or anything else aboriginal; this is the place to discuss it.
1) Obviously, we don't want posts pertaining to anything modern, although comparative discussion is welcome.
2) Just for the sake of being thorough, primitive weapons include, but are not limited to: atlatls, bows, stone knives/points, slings, bolas, traps, tomahawks, etc.
3) This subreddit is open to questions, experiences, and tutorials as well as albums showing off your aboriginal skills.
4) Feel free to provide the history of a primitive skill you want to share.
5) Don't be an ass. That shouldn't have to be said.

Hey guys, I’m building my range of skill to go on a primitive walk about in the Aussie bush and I’m wondering what primitive tools and gear I should bring to help me to live off the land ( for fire, water, hunting etc) as well as what are the best things to wear. Should I wear moccasins or rawhide sandals, should I bring buckskin shirts or trousers etc
All advice is appreciated
Cheers guys :)
Hey guys, died anyone have any experience, tip or recourses on how to build a Woomera? Cheers guys:)
I'm pretty active in a lot of survival, bushcraft, prepping, tactical/edc and related forums and areas of the internet. I seem to remeber that a while ago Tactical Intelligence had a banner saying that they would pay for submissions. I'm looking to make a bit of pocket money for buying new gear (complete self-confessed kit obsessive) and wondered if anyone knows of any other such blogs. Ideally I'm looking for places which use Paypal, but I think that's common enough to be assumed if not stated. Many thanks, all help appreciated.
ORIGINAL: Hey All,
I've been failing at the hand drill for about 4 months now. I've watched what I believe to be every youtube video demonstrating the techniques and I've yet to have any success. It's worth noting that I am also having the exact same issue with the bow drill although I haven't practiced it nearly as much.
Being unfamiliar with the names of trees I have tried a great many different wood combinations. I recently positively id'd two spindles, ash and mullein. I also positively id'd two hearths, red cedar and white pine. The spindle length is from my armpit to about the center of my palm.
When using the cedar the hole tends to gloss over so I haven't had any luck with it.
Using ash(spindle) and white pine(hearth) I warm the set until I see a small puff of smoke. After the hole gets filled up with dark brown/black dust I go for it. I've gone at it for 4 minutes solid AFTER the smoke starts billowing out of the hole and the dust never starts smoking.
{EDIT: Is there a such thing as too much pressure? The spindle smokes like crazy and I basically fill my apartment with smoke when i'm going for it. What could I be doing wrong?
Can I be using too much pressure? }

SUCCESS!!! With your help and some determination I successfully developed a coal with a hand drill twice last night. I continued to practice today, although my hands are a bit sore, and succeeded twice today as well. I'll write about my experience and post a link here for any future visitors.
I used willow for my hearth and mullein for my spindle. http://imgur.com/TJWUPJM
