Anyone else find the finals to be extremely boring this year?

I'm going to be honest, I had a very low opinion of the Mavs going into this as probably the weakest finals team of the past decade (in my opinion and only off of the eye test). In fact, the moment Minnesota won game 7 against Denver I knew Boston was about to win the title. So I was bewildered by all of the "Mavs in 6" talk when Boston was clearly the better team top to bottom with the exception of Luka. And dear god, today's closeout was insanely boring to watch. Felt like I was watching a play in game.

I'm not even a Boston (or Dallas) hater. I just feel like this should have been a sweep and the fact that Boston probably lost on purpose just to win at home made this series even more of a waste of time to watch.

Am I insane?

Ranking Seasons

In honor of the upward trajectory and overall hope we have as a fanbase right now, I wanted to make a post where I rank all the Orlando Magic seasons I have been a fan for one at a time from least enjoyable to most enjoyable. I started watching the team during 2008-2009 season so this post will be one of 16 iterations I will post throughout the offseason. We have had a pretty tough fan experience the last couple of decades and maybe this will help shed some light on how positive things are right now. Please feel free to let me know any big moments I missed or if you disagree with my assessment. So without further ado the number 16 most enjoyable season goes to the 2011-2012 season.

2011-2012 Season - 20-62

Key Losses: Stan Van Gundy, Dwight Howard (Dwight trade), Ryan Anderson (traded for Gustavo Ayon), JJ Reddick (Mid season Tobias Harris trade), Jason Richardson (Dwight Trade)

Key Additions: Nikola Vucevic (Dwight trade), Tobias Harris (mid season JJ Reddick trade), Aaron Afflalo (Dwight trade), Mo Harkless (Dwight trade)

Comment: By record, the 2012 season was the 2nd worst season in franchise history only behind the inaugural 1989-1990 season (19-63). The June before the season Stan Van Gundy (our celebrated coach who led us to the finals and some say was one of the innovators of the small ball lineup) was fired at the request of Dwight Howard. Just months after, Dwight Howard was traded setting up the longest and most painful Orlando Magic season I have seen. To say the vibes were off to start the season would be an understatement. The Dwight trade didn’t return a star or even a high caliber young prospect to be excited about. Yes we did net Mo Harkless (15th pick in 2012 draft) Nikola Vucevic (16th pick in 2011 draft), and a solid youngish swing man in Aaron Afflalo but this was still a small return for a superstar. For example, Kevin Love netted Minnesota the 1st pick in the 2014 draft, Andrew Wiggins, who at that time was considered the next super star. On top of that, there was a feeling that even if we were to find the next franchise star they would inevitably leave for a big market team. Some brighter topics though. Rob Hennigan did make a great mid season trade by moving JJ Reddick for Tobias Harris who showed some very early scoring promise. In the end, Nikola Vucevic, Tobias Harris, and Mo Harkless had some fun moments during the year but everyone knew the team still didn’t have its star just yet. By the end of the season there was some hope that maybe we could draft our superstar knowing we had won the 2nd overall pick in the 2013 draft lottery. However, in the background, there were murmurs that the 2013 class may be the least talented one in decades.

More of a need: Point Guard or Center?

In your mind what is more of a need for this team? Definite arguments for both ways and more a matter of opinion. Lot of factors to consider, place your vote and we can get a discussion going.

Spend a $150 gift card

The Magic had a promotion recently that if you have a solar company do a solar study and give you a quote, they would give you $150 to spend at the Orlando Magic store. I want to get the most out of the credit, any ideas on what to get?

Do yall think DJM would ever happen?

* Dejounte Murray (my bad)

Yes, him and Paolo have beefed in the past.

Is there ANY chance they could put that to the side? It's been a couple of years at this point.

As far as options out the market right now though, he really stands out to me.

He is a big, do it all guard who can create for others, shoot threes, and finish at the hoop. Pretty much exactly what yall have been looking for.

His defense hasn't been great in Atlanta, but I think he could return to his former self on that side of the ball around other great defenders in Orlando.

He just seems like the best fit out there to me on paper. It may be wishful thinking, but I wanted to hear some thoughts.

What went wrong with Mo Bamba?

I had a lot of faith in him when he was in Orlando. These are his career statistics by season:

https://preview.redd.it/myzhctmk8o6d1.png?width=1972&format=png&auto=webp&s=7de2d3d655dd0f24937d3ed443f4cefc72af2666

I wanted to highlight that 21-22 season when he was just 23 years old. It was the only time in his career he got more than 16 mpg in a season and is when I was absolutely the most high on him.

On paper he looks like a great 3-and-D center. 48% from the field is kinda low for his size, but that doesn't take away from the 1.7 blocks, 8 boards, and 38% from three on 4 attempts a game.

Looking at the advanced stats honestly doesn't show anything alarming either:

https://preview.redd.it/2s21ok0m9o6d1.png?width=2224&format=png&auto=webp&s=52a2142f363b6afb6f2859aa7b2822fc326aa2f7

I am going to be honest, I am no mathematician. But here are WCJ career advanced stats for perspective:

https://preview.redd.it/05urpcl7ao6d1.png?width=2228&format=png&auto=webp&s=7ff523447c77df465d6a51043962933196c7bf5d

The number I want to highlight is WS/48. It is a rough estimate of a players value proportional to their playing time (I know that much lol). I know no stat is perfect, but it's gotta mean something.

It doesn't seem to be incomparable between the two. WCJ has definitely been better since joining the Magic, but before then there was a real statistical argument.

I never watched a lot of Orlando basketball during this time (not a Magic fan), so there is something I could be completely missing. It never seemed like he ever got a real opportunity to develop though. The only season where he played significant minutes wasn't perfect, but it was promising (at least on paper).

You could make a real argument that there is no other top-six pick in recent memory who got less of an opportunity than he did. Especially one who put up some numbers in the time he was on the floor.

It very well could have been a bad team empty stats situation. HOWEVER, how can you expect him to grow at all when he is usually playing 15 minutes a game and getting few real touches for said bad team?

As of now it looks like he could be on track to be out of the league soon. I hope that doesn't happen. I just don't understand why there wouldn't be a market out there for a big, athletic guy who can shoot and block shots. Even as just a backup if that's all he can realistically be at this point.

Now I'm gonna go throw in some airpods, listen to Sheck Wes, and pretend its 2018 all over again.

EDIT: I am not at all saying he was ever a good NBA player folks. Read the post.
