Hii I had this friend that purchased an Egyptian musk oil from a store around Oakland and we can’t find it anymore. Any stores or product recommendations are appreciated 🤍
Grew up in New Jersey and lived many years in nyc and always played handball (not team handball…essentially racquetball with your hand). I am looking for an outdoor, one walled court…anyone know if any?!
Is anyone else as disturbed as I am about Another Planet Entertainment / Fox booking Die Antwoord to play? The band has a history of violence, allegations of sexual assault and child sex abuse, homophobic slurs and blackface. They were dropped from festival lineups after such an incident.
I know not all their fans know this, but surely APE & Fox management do. Been well publicized, esp in music industry publications. I'm super nervous about what kind of energy this will bring to Oakland.

Hi friends! I’m new to celebrating Dia de los Muertos, and will be celebrating with friends (yes they’re Mexican lol)! I’ve offered to buy some of the items for the ofrenda— serape, candles, marigolds, sugar skulls, etc. Which are some Mexican businesses in Fruitvale where I could reliably find the things to buy?
does anyone know the streets/hotspots for trick or treating? i'm taking my little brother this year and this neighborhood is new to us. i cant find much online, any help appreciated!
Minimum parking mandates are a type of zoning law that requires all newly constructed developments to have a minimum number of off-street parking spots. Abolishing parking minimums would not mean developers can't build parking lots, it would just mean they wouldn't be required to. The arguments against parking minimums are that they restrict personal property rights, they increase development costs, they make certain kinds of developments impossible, they enforce inefficient land use, and they hurt walkability. The cities within northern California to have already abolished parking minimums include San Francisco, San Jose, Alameda, Emeryville and Sacramento, and some others across the country include Austin, Portland, and Minneapolis. Feel free to share your own thoughts on the question.
Where can I buy a physical copy of the L.A. times this Sunday? The news stand I usually go to on Broadway doesn’t carry it. Help please!
Got a couple things that were on sale at bevmo, but hoping to find a solid hidden gem liquor store that has a good number of options without being super overpriced.
ETA: specifically looking for some mid-tier rum and amaros
Long story short: I'm more than likely going to be displaced due to uninhabitable conditions at my place.
I've reached out to everyone I need to, confirmed that right now I'm clear to just wait to get the inspector scheduled, I'm not questioning the process involved.
My question is for people that have experienced it/had people you know who have, how did you find a place? I'm guessing this is going to be a 7-14 day process to get my unit back to inhabitable conditions (getting confirmation tomorrow), but there's a decent chance it extends to a month. Private short term rentals aren't easy to come by on Craigslist, Air BnBs/extended stay hotels are going to eclipse my rent payments by a ton. I'm not trying to gouge my prop manager/landlord, but what is a reasonable tolerance when it comes to finding a short term rental?
How do I find out the trick or treat time?
My plans got cancelled for tomorrow. Does anyone know any events around the bay? Maybe more than a bar crawl. Thanks so much.
It started with just 2 strays and ever since then they multiplied. Neighbors have been feeding them which is why they stick around. A group came out per the request of the Neighbor to have them spayed and neutered and then released but clearly they missed one or two since there’s now three kittens. It’s gotten into the point where they go through the garbage bins for food and go on top of people’s cars and leave scratch marks on them. They go through our backyards and mess with our gardens, doing their business. I love cats, but this is just too much. I feel bad because they just hang out outside all day and sleep under the cars at night. There was already a cat that was ran over because they ran onto oncoming traffic. Another kitten fell into a bucket of water and it drowned which was in our neighbor’s backyard.
Is this something I can call animal control about for them to just take the cats and possibly rehome them? What should I do?
As it is Halloween on Thursday, we are going to do something different:
The Temescal District is having a bar crawl on Halloween. I had already decided on Temescal Brewing for the meetup, so I figure we segue into the bar crawl. The initial meetup will be at Temescal Brewing (on the patio), and we will probably hit Tallboy and then the Avenue for spooky ambience and cocktails.
Here is the spiel about the Thursday MeetUp group:
Feel like getting out of the house? Want to meet some new people? You know that place you’ve seen recently and been wanting to check out? For all those reasons and more, we made the Oakland Thursday Meetup. (Est. 2014)
Every Thursday you can find us at a different bar in Oakland sharing a few drinks and a some laughs.
We’ve got a mix of people, locals and transplants. The Weird and the wise. Homegirls and tech bros. Plus a strong contingent of just straight up alcoholics. Usually there’s about 10 of us, but occasionally up to 25.
It’s a great way to try some new places and get to know some folks you might otherwise miss. Drop in, drop out, no pressure and definitely no problems.
From 7:30pm to around 9pm you can find us at…
Temescal Brewing
4115 Telegraph Ave. Oakland, CA 94609
Feel free to add us on Facebook. We’ll post here for updates on where we’ll be sitting.
Hi everyone! Looking to potentially do some Jackson Pollack-esque painting for just a day. Anyone know of a space that could be rented that such messy work would be acceptable?
Thanks in advance!
Hi neighbors, I feel like I’m always late to learning about (and thus buying tickets for) incredible holiday music performances, so I’m trying to get ahead of it this year. What are local favorites? Would love vocal performances (choirs or otherwise) in particular but open to all recommendations. Thanks!
We're looking to have some light to medium work done on our home in Oakland to repair some existing column footings in our crawl space. We would appreciate any recommendations people have from previous work, or recommendations against if you e had subpar experiences.
Ty.
I'm a member of DoTheBay and can get a pair of tickets to this show on the weekend. Unfortunately I'm already going and bought my own ticket. I can claim 2 and transfer them if anyone's interested in going
I know this problem is a bit trivial compared to everything going on right now, but still hoping someone has insight into how to effectively work with this city on this.
The city recently had our street repaved (great!!), however it seems like they did not grade the street properly (not so great) and our house on the middle of the block now seems to sit at a low point and collects a lot of water in front of the curb even after the super light rain we got this week. That same repaving project reduced the opening of our curb drainage outlet by a third.
I’m worried about what this means when we hit actual rainy season and have no means to properly drain water away from our property. We did try to bring this up before the paving was completed but it wasn’t addressed.
Are we SOL as far as the city helping to remediate this? If not, who would be the best person to get in touch with (aside from filing a 311 ticket that will never get answered).
Looking at some housing options in the Laurel area and would love to hear some thoughts about schools from parents with young kids in that area. I have a kindergartener and a TK'er, so Redwood Elementary looks great, but I've heard "concerns" (not really specified) about Bret Harte. I would love to get a sense of it from parents with kids actually there if possible.
