Making good music gooder, one month at a time.
On break until future notice.
Monthly Mashtapes is a platform that allows mashup artists to be a contributing part of a tight-knit community of fellow mashers. By creating tracks on a consistent timescale, you will hone your skills by learning from others, getting feedback on rough drafts, and by developing tricks of your own as you go along. The monthly themes will challenge you to work with material/methods that may be unfamiliar to you or uncommon for your style, but they will make you more adaptable and flexible. They will result in a unique end-product consisting of tracks created entirely by you, and will be posted to r/mashups.

No one's posted here in 7 years. 7 goddamn years. How??
I'm a little caught up with studying for my last final/packing up, so I'm going to upload the tape sometime tomorrow. Also, unless there's strong opposition, I think we should take June off for a much-needed break.

I'll be uploading in the evening sometime, probably around 5. If you need to submit, either send it to the email or upload it here.
Ok, so I'm gonna ask you guys to bear with me for this month because it is a bit of a departure from what we have been doing, in that it's a transition from being "theme"-based to focusing on something that is more elemental in the structure of your track. Instrumental-Transition Month is exactly what it sounds like: somewhere in your song, I want you to try transitioning from one instrumental to another at least once. Here's a good example of what I'm talking about. You can use whatever songs you want, it just has to fulfill this one requirement. I know this is kind of a different direction for this month and it may sound a little difficult/random, but this project is in part about developing your skill and broadening your horizons as an artist. I'm thinking that we'll intersperse months like this throughout the year, with more straightforward themes in between. Feel free to leave any comments or questions below.
I'll be putting Classic Rock Month up in the evening sometime tomorrow, because I'll be traveling for most of the day. So far I have tracks from pom and Amateur Magician (which are both awesome, btw). I know a few other folks said they were interested in this month, so if you either email it to me or post it here by tomorrow afternoon it'll make it on. Good luck!
As some of you have probably noticed by your increased Soundcloud plays and subscribers in the last couple days, our audience on RMM has expanded vastly. You can thank our very own mod pomDeter for this, as his track "Call Me A Hole" went absolutely viral two days ago. I think he's sitting around 950,000 plays on the track on Soundcloud right now, and a lot of the people checking out the track have overflowed onto RMM. This is just a heads up and to give you all an extra incentive to do your best this month, because we'll now be reaching an audience of over 200 people on the 15th. Good luck!
For this month, I think it's fair that we define "classic" rock as anything between the 1960's and 1980's, unless anyone has a serious problem with that. As usual, at least one major sample in your track has to be from this time period. Good luck!
http://www.reddit.com/r/mashups/comments/18llxd/reddit_monthly_mashtapes_february_2013_oscar_month/ Thanks to pomDeter and Amateur Magician for their tracks, I really enjoyed both of them. Hoping we can generate a few more submissions for this month, we'll see how it goes.
I'll be uploading to Soundcloud whenever I get a chance, probably sometime in the afternoon. If we experience the same problems as last month we'll upload the full tape to Official.fm. Good luck everybody!

I probably have time to tweak one before the deadline but which one?
Just a quick effort and I'll probably try another. The Napoleon Dynamite track is just a short groove and a bridge so feels a little stretched and tedious even at 2 mins long. And ghostbusters is overplayed but couldn't resist getting 2 movie tracks in one.
First off I'd like to thank everyone who participated in last month's tape. This month is sure to be interesting, as we're going to be using instrumentals that will likely be orchestral in nature. Although it is officially "Oscar Month," you can use any song featured prominently in a movie. WITH YOU SUBMISSION, MAKE SURE TO TELL US WHICH MOVIE THE SONG/SONGS ARE FROM. If you want an idea for somewhere to start, here is a list of nominations for best original soundtracks from past decades (again, you're not limited to Oscar noms): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Original_Score Feel free to discuss any specific movies that could have useful songs below.
It seems like Soundcloud is taking a firmer stance against copyright infringement, and for the second month in a row has blocked the upload of certain tracks to the tape. Marzuola's Touch of Icarus and pomDeter's Somebody's Watching a Love Lockdown both were blocked for having copyrighted material, bringing our 6 tracks down to 4. I'm not sure what we can do to combat this, if anything. I've never experienced this problem uploading from my actual account, so I don't quite know what's going on. If the problem persists, we're likely going to have to determine another site to use to host the music. Thoughts/comments/suggestions?
pomDeter is going to handle the posting this month because I'll be out of town with no internet, but submissions should still be sent to redditmonthlymashtapes@gmail.com. Good luck everyone!
http://www65.zippyshare.com/v/98439891/file.html Decided to take a slightly different approach this month and use one acapella over different instrumentals. I'm pretty happy with it, but I think it still needs some leveling work. Let me know what you think.
Hi all! Hope your holidays went well. Here's this month's artwork, if any of you would like it for when you begin to publish your tracks: http://i.imgur.com/at5Gy.jpg
After getting some feedback from you all, we have decided to implement the "democracy" option as outlined by pomDeter in this thread. The idea is pretty straightforward: tracks that are released specifically for the mashtape will have priority over tracks that have been released at a prior time. This will allow us to maintain around 10-15 tracks per tape while encouraging you all to make new material. This policy is in play starting this month, so some of the older tracks that have been posted will not be on the released tape if we have enough new original content. Hope your holidays are going well!
We've noticed that most submissions for Kanye month so far are previously released tracks. While they are generally of high quality and worthy of a place in any mashtape we feel that it goes against the spirit of the challenge.
It's early days for /r/MonthlyMashtapes and perhaps the main intent and goals of this sub wasn't made clear enough. From the original thread:
I'm interested in getting around 12-ish people to make one track each for a mixtape to feature the variety of talent that this subreddit has.
What we're trying to achieve is a monthly challenge for producers to test themselves and produce new content to be showcased in a mashtape format for /r/mashups to enjoy. To push the limits of their skills and try new things outside of their comfort zone, as well as getting new producers to join in and pick up tips and tricks from the more established guys(and gals?).
If we allow previously released content to be included the mashtapes would be no more than a best of compilation. Which, to be fair, is a great idea too but not the original intent of this sub.
I see 3 options for how we continue:
^1 Space on the mashtape is another issue. At the moment we only have a free soundcloud account which will eventualy run out of space. We are exploring other options and have a few ideas.
Please share your thoughts and any other suggestions you may have.
TLDR: Allow previously released content or not, or somewhere in between?
Hey everybody, here are some observations I made about everyone's tracks this month. If anyone has any additional input on these songs/ any input for my track, feel free to leave some in the comments. Also, remember that any criticism is meant to help you improve as an artist, so don't take anything personally.
Thanks again to everyone who contributed to the first tape! Again, feel free to leave more input or respond to my criticisms.
