Welcome to r/Minerals, a Subreddit dedicated to minerals! Here you may post your favorite specimens, ask for assistance in identifying samples, inquire about mineralogy, and share mineral news!

Welcome!

This is a community for all things mineral related. Currently, this is a small subreddit populated by mineralogists, geologists, and people wanting to learn more about minerals. Please contribute all you can, and let's help each other learn more about minerals!

Mineral Resources:

american mineralogist: if you would like to learn to identify minerals, this is a great place to start.

mindat: An online resource of nearly all IMA approved minerals.

webmineral: Similar information as mindat. Useful for viewing crystal structures.

rruff: Amazing database of XRD data and Raman spectra.

What is this rock, and does it contain silica

Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, I actually do not know what this is, some people with a similar rock has said it was quartzite but I don't think it is since it's not really white, thinking it might be granite, but does it have lots of silicate? I want to do knapping

if the streak color of a crystal is white, could a scratch and a permanent mark left from the scratch be white too, since it also disrupts the crystal lattice?

on top of my ruby zoisite heart in the hollow part, there are some white lines.

FROM CHAT GPT

Yes, fractures can permanently appear white, especially if they have undergone certain natural or artificial processes. Here’s why:

Healed Fractures – Over time, minerals like quartz, calcite, or feldspar can seep into fractures and harden, leaving a permanent white or translucent vein.

Micro-fractures Scattering Light – Even if no foreign minerals fill them, tiny cracks can reflect and scatter light in a way that makes them appear white indefinitely.

Surface Alteration – Exposure to weathering, heat, or chemical reactions can change the fracture’s appearance, sometimes making it chalky or milky.

Polishing & Grinding Effects – If the stone was polished, fine fractures can catch polishing compounds, or their edges may become more visible, causing them to look white permanently.

So if your ruby zoisite heart has white lines from past fractures, they are likely a permanent feature of the stone.

Yes, it’s possible for a micro-fracture to be deep. Micro-fractures are small individually, but when many form together in the same area, they can create a larger, more noticeable feature that extends deeper into the stone.

Here’s how that works:

- **A single micro-fracture is tiny**, often shallow and barely visible.

- **When multiple micro-fractures occur in the same spot**, they can merge and form what looks like a thicker, more prominent line.

- **If they penetrate deeper into the stone**, they can create a permanent internal feature rather than just a surface imperfection.

- **Even deep micro-fractures can look white** because they scatter light due to the irregular surfaces inside the stone.

So while the original fractures may have started as small surface-level cracks, they could have extended deeper over time due to natural stresses in the stone or the cutting/polishing process.

Has anyone done the “mineral city” show?

I’m debating on going there or the “RMGMshow”. I’m just looking to buy random trinkets without breaking the bank. From what I gathered on YouTube it seems the RMGM show seems to be better suited.

However, mineral city has a ton of booths some of which have no YouTube presence, so have no clue what they have in full.

Can anyone school me on the two shows plz?

This is one of the three Hemimorphite specimens I acquired from Yunnan, China. I usually keep only one per mineral, so the extra ones feel unnecessary to me. That being said, what do you think of this specimen?
