Registered people, what’s your opinion on my attitude?

I was dispatched a job that was meant to be 4 hours but could turn into 8 hours if no one else filled the pad. I said out loud that I hoped it would be filled so I’d only have to work 4 hours. A young A-men overheard me and accused me of being entitled, disrespectful, among other things since I’m just a casual. Do you agree with him?

Is GST paid for? (ILWU local 19 casual)

Moved back to Seattle recently and planned to hit the docks even if busy season had ended and just happened to get a letter for a general safety training. Didn't know if it was paid for as some trainings in the past have been.

Are there any exceptions to the 6 month rule for casuals

I am a new casual for LA/LB. I got my card 5 months ago but I have not worked yet due to an ongoing medical issue I have. I was recently diagnosed with sleep apnea and I suffer from fatigue, significant brain fog, memory impairment, and lack of spatial awareness. I have nodded off while driving several times in the last 2 years and have stopped driving on the freeway because of it. I am being treated but progress is slow and has its ups and downs.

Needless to say I do not feel safe going to work in the port until my issues are sorted out, and I don’t think anyone else would want to work around someone who is so impaired.

I have roughly 1 month left before I will be in danger of losing my card due to the 6 month rule. I don’t want to lose my card. Is there any way I can get a medical exemption to extend my 6 months? Who can I talk to about this? Any advice?

What happens once trump inaugurated

OK, just at the title states let’s say January 15 comes US MX still is not budging on automation. We strike for five days. Trump gets in office. I am new to this just started as a longshoreman two months ago I’m a casual but from my understanding, there is a Taft and Harley act that can force the union members back to work, then, what happens will it be illegal for us to stay not working? Can they arrest dagget? I see the message dagget sent saying that we have to stand together just trying to see what the outcome could be to this how much power do we as the ILA union really have in ourhands it seems like it would cost a lot of money to send all the ships that are coming on the East Coast to the West Coast what are yall thought would like to get at least 12 years out of this but really scared now that it might not happen. How powerful are we?

Does automation hurt checkers and clerks more or does it hurt longshoreman (hash tenders, truck drivers, operators etc)

I am in casual at the moment just started a few months ago. I am on the checker side. We have about 400 people in our union. Just wondering if automation does come if I can make it career out of this automation take some of the checker jobs?

Negotiations broke off Dagget and trump

Hello everyone so looks like contracts are broken off the USMX is probably using the fact that Trump and Elon are anti-union to their advantage. My question is I’ve seen pictures of Dagget and Trump together. Do all of my veterans ILA members think that dagget really going to protect our jobs, if Taft and Harley is put in place on jan 20 what can we do to stop automation? Can we just work at extremely slow pace? I know a lot of people in here are against the ILA so I’m sure it’s going to be flooded with negativity but it’s only a matter of time before automation takes over everyone’s jobs. Thank God we have a union to try to fight for us, butdo the veteran members think that it do the veteran members think that it is really for us is really for us?

Pursuing an education for the future

Im going to try and word this is as well as i can but Im a casual at the Port Of Long Beach so i know my job and future at the docks is not protected by anything and with the impending future of more terminals/docks being automated by AI and robotics systems, what field(s) of tech, engineering, or mechanics would i be smart to pursue a career/education in if i wanted to ensure a future on the waterfront. i appreciate any feedback!

Will I be able to get at least 12 years out of this job? new casual

Just asked the title states hello everyone I just started in September of this year on the checker side. I hear so much fair uncertainty in doubt about automation Trump and just everything that comes with the longshoreman job. I’m so grateful for this opportunity and just wondering if you guys, think that I will be able to get at least two contracts out of this if not more with the automation etc. I’m at the port of Charleston South Carolina local 1771. for all of my veterans that have been here. What do you guys think? I know there’s a lot of haters and trolls in this group, it’s kinda hard to sort out actually any input from you guys would be very thankful City and we all work at all three of them and one of the port is getting expanded with two more births over the next few years so if you comment with the IA, please post your local so I can kind of sort out who’swith us and who’s against thank you so much

What are your thoughts on the industry?

I'm considering trying to join in at the port of Galveston or Freeport. I know nothing about what the jobs actually entail, only what I've been told by someone who used to work at the ports. Could someone presently in the industry (if you're at the port of Galveston ILA 20 or Freeport ILA 30, even better) give me a rundown as far as what to expect if I were to go this route?

So now what!?!?!?

So we cancelled the strike and went back to work with some tentative agreements about wage increases, which were strong, but got no concessions on automation. Now we got a new president coming in who, based on who he is saying is gonna be in his administration (Elon), isn’t gonna be sympathetic to our fight against automation. We agreed to revisit things after the inauguration…but it sure seems like we have a much worse negotiating position now. So I guess we just tuck our tail, be grateful for the wage increase while we can, and watch while the ports are slowly automated and our jobs get eliminated? Seems like we got f*cked by the guys at the top who agreed to end the strike. We missed our opportunity!

Military equipment to foreign countries

I recently loaded a vessel with heavy amounts of military vehicles and ammunition containers destined for Ashdod Israel.

The amount of artillery we’re sending over seas for these proxy wars is mind boggling. Unfortunately this was a military contract and I cannot post the pictures I have but holy shit man we loaded an entire vessel with killing machines for a war that doesn’t even involve us. Our tax payer money is going to fight other countries issues and it’s sad to see. This was loaded in New Jersey.
