Ex boyfriend won’t send notice to vacate current apartment

My ex boyfriend and I moved into an apartment together, we broke up, he moved out about 6 months ago, but he’s still on the 2-person lease and still has a set of keys. I’m moving out and I sent my notice to vacate the apartment, but he is refusing to do so. The apartment management is saying that if he does not do that, rent will be on a monthly basis and I’m worried because my name and card are on the rent payment site and he will not pay it and I do not want a missed payment to affect my credit because he can’t send an email or turn in his keys. Am I really responsible for rent when I’ve sent my notice to vacate? What can I do about this?

I live in Michigan.

I am being evicted by my mother.

I’m seeking advice on a challenging situation. Due to actions by my mother, my credit score plummeted from 780 to 580, impacting my ability to secure a loan for a home I previously had a home equity line of credit on. Consequently, my mother placed the loan under her name. Due to ongoing negative actions from her, I chose to cease communication. I don’t want to go into details about what she did, but it was extremely hurtful and will impact my life forever. I live in this home with my husband and four children. A year ago, my mother had my husband sign a lease agreement that excluded my name. Now, she is trying to evict me, citing my absence from the lease as the reason, although she’s allowing my husband and children to stay and has always known I was there. I live in Ohio. Is there any action I can take to address this situation?

Will the pro-Palestine students that have been arrested for protesting in the U.S go to prison?

Hello, I'm not American so idk about American law, but I see on the news that hundreds of pro-Palestine students across the U.S. are being arrested for protesting.

My question is, what will happen to them now that they've been arrested? Will they go to prison ? Get this on their criminal record, or pay a fine or be expelled from their respective universities ? Genuinely curious.

I don’t mean to start a debate, I just wanna know what could or will happen to them.

Thanks to those who kindly respond and have a nice day!

How to go about work discrimination

If you are being discriminated at work, how do I prove it legally? Also, if they give a document and want you to sign it that states that you weren’t discriminated do you have to sign it? It says so a part of my weekly timecard so I assumed you have to sign it

Is this enforceable? They said I wouldn't be able to use my full membership benefits if I didn't accept it but it's never popped up before.

Is this legal from Best Buy?

Never seen this before; bought a TV about a month ago and just got this email today. Can’t imagine it’ll be too much $ but how is this legal without disclosing the amount being charged to me?

Post Bankruptcy Debt Dispute

If, during a chapter 13 bankruptcy, a debt was supposed to have been paid in full, is there any legal recourse if the creditor is saying you owe a balance? Loan servicer was paid by the trustee. Based on POC filed by the creditor and Trustee's payment history the debt was paid in full.

So far I've been told the only option is to send the servicer a letter and if they ignore it and file a suit against me I can counter. I just got out of a bankruptcy, it seems like terrible advice to allow a debt to go that far delinquent.

Unpaid comissions

I work for a very large company that manufactures construction products. In my position we are to get a quarterly commission payment at the end of the month following the end of yearly quarter. They have been late 5-6 times since I’ve worked there and I’ve brought up the issue to local HR, direct manager, their manager, local president and nothing has changed. Just found out this morning that tomorrow’s check won’t include commissions payment. What can I do? Do I have a legal leg to stand on? I’ve offered options like sending an off cycle check and such but it falls on deaf ears. For context in in AZ USA.

Sheriff rant

Hi. So I work at a California college with a sheriff stationed all day. He obviously gets bored so he comes in to rant about this and that. Some of it is technically correct and missing a lot of nuance and context. But today he came in saying that if a man calls for DV, and he has injuries and a reasonable story, but they are unable to locate the female aggressor, then according to this sheriff he has to take the male in as a suspect. Is this true? I have heard this from several people, that if a DV call is made SOMEONE has to get taken in. This is usually followed by “so he preferred to be taken in bc she had to stay with the kids and now he has a record.

Just terminated - employer withholding last paycheck.

Greetings everyone

I live in Arizona. I was just terminated by an employer based out of Vermont. In their letter of termination, they said they will not process my paycheck until 3 days after receiving assets I am supposed to send them. In Arizona, I think they have the next payday or 7 days to pay me, and in Vermont, they have 72 hours to pay my last paycheck.

Tomorrow is supposed to be payday (paid at end of the month).

What legal action can I pursue here?

Thanks all in advance.

Can me landlord sue me for pointing out flaws in a house?

My landlord for my fraternity house has not been keeping up with his end of the share. He:

-Hasn’t fixed our terrible driveway and says it’s the tenants responsibility -Randomly raises rent -Just generally obnoxious and fails to take care of the property

Recently our fraternity has turned over, and another fraternity will take over the house. I recently invited over some of the guys from the other fraternity and showed them all the flaws with the house and the landlord. If the other fraternity doesn’t pick up the house, can he sue me when I pointed out flaws in the house? I never went after his character, but I did warn the other fraternity about the situation we were faced with.

Friend working 2-3am for a big event. What recourse?

Asking for a friend who is in a major U.S. city. They are a senior marketer at a major company that is hosting a big event. The high-security event runs til late with big A-listers so all personnel working the event are in-house.

My office worker friend is doing work outside their job description for the event. The company’s social media presence needs to be monitored and updated almost constantly during the event. During the event they will be working in a small room without ventilation, looking at screens til around 2am. They have done this out of the spirit of being a team player before and it was very bad for their health and created some low key claustrophobia where there hadn’t been any. They were sick for weeks after the event as their body recuperated but still showed up because the event created a lot of follow-on social media work as well. They let their manager know they were not interested in this graveyard shift again but…

This year they have once again been assigned the graveyard basement shift and they are worried about the effects on their health. The company usually does this and is known for exploiting free labor of its workers in exchange for perks like seeing celebrities or rubbing elbows with them at exclusive events.

The OT shifts are not compensated in any way except for some catered sandwiches provided for dinner. My friend is not allowed to leave the room because of the 24/7 social media nature of the job.

Is there anything my friend can do to 1. Get out of this work in the short term while maintaining a good relationship with the team and their manager and 2. Improve conditions of this particular assignment in the long run? It’s a recurring annual event and another hapless or green professional will undoubtedly be pulled in.

Thank you for any advice you can give!

Can a bank be sued for a destroyed relationship?

Siblings receive an inheritance check from a bank, but they screw it up: the checks are for more than they should be. Lawyers are consulted and strategies are considered. A conversation about the strategies occurs between two of the siblings that results in the two never speaking to each other again. Can one or both siblings sue the bank?

I created an app and I want to know how legal it is

I recently coded an app that had the ability to download songs (or any audio) from YouTube videos. It uses an open source library that reverse engineers YouTube endpoints to download YouTube videos without relying on the official paid YouTube API. Is this legal? The library is at https://github.com/Tyrrrz/YoutubeExplode

Bankruptcy chapter 7

Hello all,

My wife and I are in the midst of having to file a bankruptcy. Long, tiring story of how we got into this unfortunate situation....anyway, we have an appt with an attorney Friday, j/w if anyone has experienced this...

We own a home with a mortgage. Obviously, housing values have jumped significantly between 2020-2024. We owe approximately $243000 on the home, and zillow puts the value at approx $343000. We live in NJ, so our homestead protection is about $52000 of the equity(federal exemption). We have solar pannels on our roof, and about $52000 is owed on them. Since they are physically part of the home, does this loan count towards the total amount owed on the house in regards to the equity?

Do I have to pay?

I live in a standard housing neighborhood where just over the backyard fence there is the neighbors yard. The neighbor behind me text me a couple weeks ago saying they wanted to replace the fence with a new one, and asked if we would be willing to split the cost. We just found out my wife is pregnant so I let the neighbor know that I would be interested in helping with the cost, but I would be unable to help for a while as preparing for a baby costs a lot of money.

The neighbor text me this morning saying they are going to proceed with the project and it will cost over $1800 for my portion of the cost. The fence is technically “my” fence, as the inside is on my side of the yards.

I don’t have $1800 to give away for an unnecessary project, the fence is in decent shape, it’s not perfect, but it’s secure. If I don’t give them permission to replace the fence, and I don’t agree to pay the cost, do they have grounds to sue me for the requested funds?

What happens if a person is avoiding being served?

I’m suing someone in small claims court for a car accident. The accident happened December of last year and I filed the lawsuit 2 weeks ago. I called the sheriffs office today to ask if the summons has been served and the representative said the officer tried a couple times to serve it and left their card at their apartment, but they haven’t been able to serve the person because nobody answered the door. The pre-trial mediation date isn’t until June 3rd. What will happen if they’re never able to serve them? I’m almost 99% sure this person is purposely avoiding being served because I doubt they have moved in the last 4 months and I’m pretty sure they saw this coming being that they were found 100% at fault for the accident and they were very underinsured (they had the minimum coverages by law for our state.) I’ll also like to add there was an infraction hearing last month where they hired a traffic lawyer for their ticket, and the lawyer and I spoke and he agreed to give the person my number so we can work something out and avoid going to court. I never heard from the person. I will still attend the pre-trial conference of course, but will it do me any good if they’re never able to actually serve the person? I’m in Florida. (cross-posted on legaladvice.)

Can I get sued for reporting to someone’s HR that I was sent unsolicited pics? (I don’t work in that company)

I want to report to someone’s job anonymously that they sent me unwanted nudes of themselves. Can I get sued for that in Texas? Also how would I do it anonymously?

Just moved into an apartment and I see begbugs

I live in ohio i just signed a year lease for a 1 bedroom on April 1st we did not start moving things in until April 27th. We got up the next morning and there is an adult bed bug crawling on the ceiling. I feel as if the person above us must have a really bad infestation if we are seeing them 1 day into living there and I don’t want to live with bedbugs for a year until I can move. Yes I can bomb and spray but if someone else has them they will keep making way into our unit and bedbugs also have the ability to become resistant to the chemicals so eventually they would stop working. I need to know am I able to break the lease without being penalized. Below is an insert from our lease.

bExtermination of Roaches will be performed by Lessor on a regular basis for multi-family units, if a single family residence it is the responsibility of the Lessee. If the Lessee obtains Bed Bugs it is the responsibility of the Lessee to treat the residence on a regular basis until remedied, Lessor is not responsible for Bed Bug treatments. Rent payable to lessor shall not be abated or reduced because of lessor’s inability to make prompt repairs. Before any major repairs are done by lessee, lessor must be notified in writing of repairs to be made. Lessor will have the right to see that repairs are done properly and in the most prompt manner.
