The reason he's a pre-teen is because in the fanfic Takeo and Hanako are the main characters instead of Tanjiro and Nezuko who are dead. So I made the kamboko squad all twelve year olds so Takeo and Hanako aren't with a bunch of older teenagers.

The story could use so many improvements. By that I mean the story is literally a void. There's little reason for anything, nothing is explained and payoffs are cheap and hold no weight. These aren't nitpicks, these are pointing out flaws that would seriously improve the story and payoffs if they weren't there.

SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE MANGA

1. Tanjiro's kindness being a weakness sticks around. He gets paired with Genya for missions, since they're new, but only finds out after he breaks his arm. This is interesting because they're opposite types of temperament. After spending some character moments travelling together, they fight the water-dimension demon w/e and Tanjiro's kindness backfires when the demon pleads for its life and spews out its sad back story.

This would establish the humanizing demons aspect. The hesitation by Tanjiro causes Genya's limb or something to be injured irreversibly. This causes guilt and a serious motivation for change. Genya can't fight for the time being and leaves the story for now.

2. Tanjiro fights drum demon and meets Zenitsu and Inosuke. Zenitsu stays a coward, but drop the falling asleep thing and make it so he literally has to fight with his eyes closed so he doesn't pass out from fear. Make it a WEAKNESS. He already has good hearing, so make that a reason why he's reasonably adapted to this blind fighting style. Drop obnoxiousness by at least 20%. Inosuke stays the same, he's great but add some more foreshadowing/reasoning behind his flexibility and poison resistance.

3. Later at the Spider Mountain arc, the moment where Tanjiro mercy-kills the Spider Mom could be the culmination of his weakness of kindness. He sees that the demon has given up and doesn't want this life of pain and suffering anymore. Before, he would consider stopping his attack and maybe seeing if the demon would fight with them, but he knows this demon has murdered dozens of innocent people and still goes for the kill the exact same way in the anime. Exercising kindness but not naivety.

4. Make Rengoku more interesting. His character traits are: Direct, loud, nice except that one time he said they should kill Tanjiro and Nezuko, and strong. Give us more time with the character and to actually understand him. Makes his death more impactful.

5. Trickle in parts where Genya can't accept not being to fight anymore and goes down a rabbit hole leading him to the red spider lily - what created Muzan as we know him. Genya somehow connects with Tamayo and works with her to make him into this pseudo-demon. He fully re-enters the story at the Swordsmith Village like before, but with the reveal that he regenerated from his injuries and can fight now. Also give him wind breathing god damnit. Or at least a reason to prefer a shotgun other than he can't do breathing forms and never explain WHY.

6. Give lower-ranked Demon Slayers breathing forms. Seriously, why is the main cast the only ones. You can still make it rare, but it's literally ONLY the Hashira and main cast. The 2nd highest-ranked Demon Slayers aren't badass? Just schmucks? No one else can do the main pillars of breathing. (Tanjiro learned water in 6 months btw)

7. Make it so wisteria has been used by every Demon Slayer, because it's infinitely useful. Creating a more believable reason as to why the Upper Rank demons have been the same for over 100 years. They've been hiding from Hashira, because wisteria makes them much more difficult to deal with. Or maybe they're immune. Have the wisteria be farmed and protected in a similar fashion to the Swordsmith Village, but the upper ranks find it finally and burn it all down - seriously impacting the Demon Slayers capability of fighting. Maybe THAT's why it's been 100 years. Upper moons are just near-impossible to take on without it. Make an arc about Tanjiro finding a new source of demon poison. Include love-interest girl and Insect Hashira.

8. Actually take time to explain what Sun breathing is/why it's so strong other than "It's the first." Okay, and? Does the breathing method make your body that much stronger? How? How can breathing differentiate so much that creates this big of a power difference?

9. Explain marks further.

10. Flesh out Zenitsu's relationship with his old rival. Actually build up to the point where he doesn't need to fight blind anymore. It would actually matter if, again, IT WAS A WEAKNESS.

tl;dr: The story is rushed. This leads to no world building, no meaningful deaths, no pay offs, and shit being thrown into the story without any explanation. Also, Tanjiro and many other characters are Mary Sue's with no real flaws other than, "I am weak, must become strong." Otherwise, I enjoy the series for what it is. David vs Goliath, "normal" humans vs the never ending night, heroism. It's just that there's no substance. It's like if a chef spent 10 hours making me a meal and when I go to eat it, I find out he just made a grilled cheese with store-bought cheese. Like, it tastes good, thanks, but is that it?

Maybe with Genya taking her or something
