What is Kaliningrad?

Kaliningrad (Калининград) is a Russian exclave between Poland and Lithuania. Prior to its annexation by the USSR in 1945, the area was once a part of East Prussia and it was once home to many famous academic specialists such as Immanuel Kant.

The area was heavily isolated upon its annexation, but after the collapse of the USSR, the area is now open to foreign visitors.

The region shares a very unique history with Germany.

Question from a Pole

What do Russians from the Kaliningrad Oblast think of the Polish people? Are they more 'westernized' in that matter than Russians from Russia-proper?

Taking a truck load from Russia to Kaliningrad?

Does anybody know what the procedures are for taking a truck from Russia to Kaliningrad? I have to make a delivery next month from Kazan.

My question is, is it easier to just take the ferry from SPb and pay the price or drive through Lithuania? Is transit still allowed through Lithuania these days for trucks? I understand that I’ll need a facilitated transit document to go through Lithuania. Is there anything else? Thanks.

How do you feel about American tourists?

Hello! I am an American looking to visit to see your art, historical sights, nature, and Kant monument. How do people of Kaliningrad view American tourists? I’m not loud or fat and I do have a bit of Russian (but I speak it poorly). Just wondering if locals welcome American tourists with poor Russian. And yes I have done the research about visas/entry routes :)

Short Trip to Kaliningrad

Hi as i am based in Switzerland i am travelling to Gdansk this Weekend and want to spend 2 days in Kaliningrad.
I do have Visa for Russia so i do not expect problems.

If i find rental car in Gdansk which allows to take the car to Kalinigrad it will be fine otherwise i will take the bus or maybe an Uber. Does anyone have info on transport means from Gdansk to Kaliningrad and back?

Any suggestions on what you would recommend? I love Food, local atmosphere and maybe some wellness.
Thanks and see you soon

Travel from Lituania and back

Hi everyone,

I’m a Romanian citizen (EU passport holder) planning to visit Kaliningrad from Lithuania. I understand that crossing the border by car might not be possible, but crossing on foot is allowed (? please confirm).

My questions are:

  1. If I rent a car in Lithuania and leave it at the border, how do I get into the city from there?
  2. Are there buses or other forms of public transport available from the border to Kaliningrad?
  3. Any tips or advice for the crossing process?

Thank you in advance for your help!

18+

Hello!

Sorry, an uncomfortable question

Until a few years ago there was a JW Kingdom Hall in Ulitsa 1812 Goda, 102 in Kaliningrad: the problem of a sexually permissive organization, tolerating & encouraging pedophilia, within the society / a new religion from the USA within the conventionally Christian & Russian Orthodox population, had existed in Kaliningrad too.

I'm just reading an Application for Asylum in Germany by a female JW, September 2018, that elsewhere in the Russian Federation events were held in schools ... to warn possible future victims?

"[...] They lived in a small town. Everyone there knew that they were Jehovah's Witnesses. She was also very open about it. After the nationwide ban, events were held at her school that portrayed Jehovah's Witnesses as extremist. Her fellow students, who knew that she was a Jehovah's Witness, looked at her strangely and called her a sectarian. [...] She was also afraid that her little sister would be taken away from the family and placed in a children's home. [...]"

^([Administrative Court, Kassel/Germany, July 29, 2020 — translate.google])

Was something like this also necessary in Kaliningrad Oblast?

Were children confronted with such or was there an 18+ limit?

Thank you very much in advance!

Can I enter and leave Kaliningrad with Albanian passport, but german residency/visa?

Hi everyone! My best friend is from Kaliningrad and we've always talked about me coming back with her to visit her city at some point, but we're not really sure if I can get in and get out. Obviously I would need a visa and I saw you can easily get one online, but I'm not sure if I would be allowed in and later out of the country? For reference, my best friend usually enters through Poland, so I would enter through there too. Thanks in advance for the help :)

Can I enter Kaliningrad from Lithuania and exit into Poland?

Hello, looking to plan my travelling next year and figured I might as well add another country to my list. Thusly, is it currently possible to travel between Lithuania and Poland by going through Kaliningrad? Hopefully I’d also spend a day or so enjoying the city. Would I (UK passport) also need any specific Visas? Thanks! Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask. :)

Victory Day in Kaliningrad

Hello everyone, I want to begin by saying thank you for the great information available here. I wanted to ask about any thoughts regarding things to do if I am in Kaliningrad on May 9. Is it possible to view the parade? Are there other events or areas I should check out that day? As it stands, I am planning on arriving to Kaliningrad (coming from Gdansk) on May 8. I have a feeling there may be some increased traffic given the holiday, so I am planning time accordingly.

But feel free to dash my spirits. Maybe there is really not that much I could see or do. I just want to be realistic about what all I can observe and celebrate on May 9 in Kaliningrad. And if that means it will really be like any other day, that is just the reality. I appreciate all info!
