Revisiting jazz guitar . i’ve learned the chords and melody of “Blue Bossa” in C minor. (Chords by chart and melody by ear ) . Next step is I would like to create a very simple arrangement of the song so that it is recognizable to someone I play it to solo . This is not too difficult to “fake” a tune on piano, but with guitar a bit more challenging. I’m not interested in developing a complicated chord melody or classical guitar arrangement. I know that is hard and more advanced than what I’m capable of and I don’t want to copy someone else’s tab either . I’d like to do it myself. Can someone offer me any tips on where to start ? Even better, are there any YouTube tutorials out there that cover this ?
From the Deep Dive with Ben Monder.
I have a gig in a week which requires me to memorise quite a few tunes. It’s standing up, walking around playing in a duo. I only need to comp a rhythm part, so nothing complicated playing-wise. But I’m so used to having the charts.
It’s about a dozen tunes that I don’t currently already know. Any tips for committing chord changes to memory?
Hey everyone I’m helping out with a performance tonight but I never went to school or had formal lessons for guitar. What is the difference between Eb-7 and the Eb7 (as seen in the picture). I’ve looked online and can’t seem to find an answer. Any help is appreciated thank you!
Hello fellow jazz guitarists,
I prefer to play without a pick because I like to harmonize my lines and finger style just worked better for me.
For larger chords (where we include the 5th, 7th, and whatever extensions), I’m finding that I need to be resourceful with the limitations of the instrument, so I’ve started using an over-neck thumb to play the bass note for these chords.
However, for some chords, I need even more fingers. I play finger style omitting the pinky, using the three fingers for the 3 high strings and the thumb for the bass.
For those of you who also play finger style jazz, do you use the pinky on your plucking hand? If so, any tips or resources to relearn my positioning?
Chick Corea style 5 over 4 pentatonic scale pattern
This is a simple and cool technique for playing 5 over 4 lines.
It's simply a 4 note Gm pentatonic sequence with a single rest in between each 4 note sequence, giving you a 5 over 4
(quintuplet) feel, without having to work out and actually play quintuplets.
It uses slurs which further fluidifies the sound.
There are actually many ways to pick this. This first - as I show here - is simply to use
alternate picking. The 2nd which I will leave up to you, is to use hybrid picking and alternate beween the
middle, ring and pick.
Remember, I give private lessons so hmu if you're interested. More info on my website.

I’m looking for 3 nice arrangements of Standards that have been tabbed out. Ideally 1 basic one, 1 slightly harder and 1 that’s more “intermediate”, so I’m not looking for anything too advanced. Can you post links to your favourite Chord Melody arrangements that fit this? Even YouTube vids would be great!
In other words - if you were my teacher, what would be the first 3 chord melody arrangements you’d set me as homework?
I’m looking for a fun standard where I can do a call and response with another player. Any recommendations for simple fun pieces?
Discovered jazz a couple of months ago and was blown away. Been playing guitar for around 15 years, mainly fingerstyle acoustic.
I have an 2011 Baja Telecaster (Mexico) and a Blues Junior (Tweed), but was planning to buy a new electric already before discovering jazz. I really like Teles because of the feel, durability and looks. But I’ve always wanted a Gibson 335 aswell. Sometime in the future maybe a real archtop.
Im choosing between:
American Tele Professional II (new)
American Tele Vintage II 1951 (new)
Slightly used Gibson 335 Vintage (roughly +35 % the price of the teles)
Any general tips from a jazz-guitar standpoint? I cant decide on wich Tele feels the best, and really cant hear that much difference in tone. 335 feels great aswell, but a bit strange compared to what im used to.
do you have everything written down or do you analyze without writing anything, im fairly new to this so im not what sure whats the best way
I have been playing piano and guitar for a while now and when I was in college I studied some jazz piano so I have my dominant chords down.
Problem is when I want to apply them to guitar it’s really awkward to find simpler shapes that work as rootless voicings for dominant chords specifically.
What are some of your go to’s?
