I'm really struggling to make those really quick and smooth licks when soloing and solo smoothly over chord changes and I was wandering if anyone knew any ex exercises I could do or solos I could have a look at anything would be
(preferably I'll be looking for somewhat beginner friendly solo TBH I'm still shit with modes)
I am transcribing Sonny Rollins’s solo on the Prestige recordings version of Oleo and he has some arpeggiated lines, which given the tempo of the tune I can only deal with by sweep picking them, however my technique is not up to par. I can pick the arpeggiated notes with clarity but I got strings ringing as my fingers move on to the next note. I try to mute them with my right/picking hand but I end up basically palm muting the whole arpeggio. Any advice on how to do this cleanly?
Alternatively do you have other ways to play arpeggios in fast tempos?
I’m considering saving up money for an gold top with p90s or an es-335. I looooovvveeee gold top les Pauls but i’ve never heard anyone play jazz on them. I’m definately not only a jazz guitar player but I’m also a more versatile player (soul, rock, metal, pop) so thats why I’m considering those two guitars.
Title. I've been playing rock/metal guitar for years and just now branching out to jazz. Not sure why it took me so long.
What other songs should I look at that's similar?
Hey everyone! I'm looking to buy my first electric guitar and really like the look of the Guild Starfire I DC in Emerald Green. My budget is around $500–$700, and I want to make sure I’m making a good choice as a complete beginner.
Would this be a good guitar for someone just starting out? Are there any better alternatives in this price range that I should consider?
I’d really appreciate any advice or recommendations. Thanks in advance!
Hi all
Can I put flatwound 10 - 44 strings on my Hagstrom Alvar to give me a more, mellow, woody tone?
Thanks
M
We tell new jazz guitarists both of these things, but they seem like opposites to me.
Learn these chords with their roots on the 5th and 6th strings.
When playing with others, never play the bass notes of chords on the 5th and 6th strings. It will conflict with the bass player.
So when would we ever play chords using the 5th and 6th strings? Solo guitar only? If we're in a band with no bass?
Hey! I'm trying to get a grasp on how the song flows. I've heard a guy say in 9 for the A sections but I can't hear it. Is that correct? The song clearly has an AABA form, but the A's aren't standard. Can anyone help me decipher the song? Thanks
I know this probably asked here every day but I play guitar for 10 years and I mostly play 70’s rock and indie rock. I am good with these styles but lately when I improvise I tend to do same things and same licks so I want to learn new scales and new licks and chord shapes. I’m don’t want to be a full time jazz player but I know learning jazz would improve me as a rock guitarist so where should I start which YouTube channels, practice course or books would you recommend me.
Can’t go wrong with transcribing Sonny Rollins! The way this line hits after the rhythmic development leading up to it knocks me out every time
These chord voicings, is V, V111, X1 showing what frett the fingerings go onto?
The whole thing is an improv
I'm currently learning Just Friends from the Real Book, and one of my classmates suggested using these two chords leading instead of the B-7 in the eleventh (and twenty-seventh) measure. Anybody got any grips to do both of these easily and smoothly around the neighborhood of the fifth-eighth frets? I have small hands and I try to be economical with moving around the neck.
I'm a guy that's played guitar for a while and I'm thinking about learning jazz. Question is, if I play like Wes, Barney Kessel, etc - do you think it would help me pick up some girlfriends?
Open/modal arrangement of All Blues over loops.
I realized i could start posting here . Unlike other social media platforms, my less than perfect takes are much more welcome here and wont get drowned out by viral shorter videos. Ive enjoyed watching everyone play their style since joining this sub. Whether you play bebop, swing, gypsy jazz, or fusion etc its all been such a delight.
Quick question guys.
As seen in the photo. Ab diminished can be used over a G7 chord. Which diminished would you use?
The Whole/Half, or Half/Whole. Could you not use one of those diminished variations over Gb as well, rooting a half step down instead of above?
Thanks everyone.
Guitar guys typically hate what I do, but I'm putting myself out there. Have a good one.
