Following up some earlier posts, I’m back to using Soundslice for jazz transcribing. After testing Dorico, Staffpad, and Symphony Pro, I’m persuaded that SS is the most intuitive and quickest, especially with an iPad Pro. But I’ve got three noob questions I hope some aficionados can help with:
Is there a way to color or highlight specific bars so I can easily find them later? For example, I’m transcribing a 32-bar Coleman Hawkins solo, but I want to highlight certain licks so I can practice them. Is there a highlighter function or something similar?
Is there a way to create a file folder specifically for this kind of thing, so all my transcribed licks are in one place?
Does SS have help forums, for noob questions like this? Under “Community,” all I’m seeing is people posting their slices, but no place to ask questions.
Thanks all! I’m cross post in the Soundslice sub, too.
Where can I get more of this modal, unresolved type of sound? Doesn't need to be a guitarist.
The step through multiple dissonances really makes this feel like a classical or flamenco composition.
Sometimes listening to big band versions is the best way to come up with a chord melody.

I’m basically ready to do my uni audition but I need to find a preferably published jazz chord solo, where would I find one?
I started in my 30s after just picking up the guitar. Been trying to play jazz for a year and it’s been a blast, have a good teacher, focusing on learning Melodies and chord changes. I feel every well like something is clicking, and I can play just slightly better. So far online courses haven’t done it. If you don’t have a teacher I highly recommend.
i mean ive been practicing transcriptions i learned a bunch of solos over jazz blues and charlie parker standards but i just cant seem to keep the chord progression in my head just playing to the metronome i am a beginner but ive been trying this for months is this too ambitious of a goal or something
I think they are beautiful, however, as a dad with two little kids, my gear budget is around $8-12 depending on how good my behavior is. That said, I do have hamburgers and an eq pedal. Is there anyway to emulate, however slightly, that sound with some eq sweeps or anything similar?
I got 3000 usd to spend.
Just curious, what guitar would you suggest as the equivalent to a Gibson es125 within the price range?
I was in a music class, and a fellow student approached and said that to me. That for good or bad stuck on my mind. We were talking about soloing in a songwriting context when the solos are shorter, the guys was a big Tom Jobim fan, so thats where the context of the conversation come from ( im aware that in jobims music there is not many improvisation). But, I was wondering if this could aply to jazz? Do you think the opening and ending of the solo are the most crucial things on a solo? Or do you believe is about the journey of the solo? Or both? What you think about it?
My friend and I are scheduled to play at a christmas concert at our school. We are two guitarists and there's no drummer at our school that is playing jazz, so we're stuck with two guitars or maybe one guitar one bass.
Does anyone know some songs that fit the vibe and are managable to learn and arrange until mid december? Thanks for the help
I have been teaching guitar for a long time. I REALLY love improvisation which led me to jazz. Here I’m talking about some straight forward ideas that I think may make improvising on this tune more fun. This is just the A Section. I’ll do a Part 2 soon. I hope it helps someone.
A wonderful standard I love playing. Enjoy !
Hello, fellow guitarists! I'm a classical guitarist but recently I've joined a big band. My band director wants me to play chords on the highest four strings (DGBe). I tried to read some popular books about rhythm guitar in a big band but most of them offer positions on lower E, B(or D) and G.
Where can I find more information about chord positioning demanded from me?
Once you know the key the lick is in and have learned it by ear or by tab, do you look at the chords it’s played over? Do you look at the intervals/scale degrees/notes relative to the root? The rhythm and other devices used like slides, pull offs etc? How do you then internalize these licks so that they’re part of your arsenal/vocabulary and not just regurgitations?
It’s a loaded question I know but I’m looking for other perspectives to help me understand how to most effectively learn how to analyze licks and phrases I learn.

im in jazz band and i really want to impress my jazz teacher. any suggestions on songs i should learn? ive already gotten the most popular jazz songs down like autumn leaves or fly me to the moon and more and would like something a tad more challenging. and most importantly, one that will impress my teacher.
What musical projects (such as transcribing a solo/ album or learning a song in all 12 keys) have you found most beneficial to your playing?
I consider a project anything with an end goal and something that goes beyond regular exercises.
