Is it possible to work in Indonesia?

Hello fellow Redditors of Indonesia.

Finding a job abroad is exhausting for all of us. We dream of a place but when we face the reality, we see that this dream which is smaller compared to the overall huge ambitions of the people - gets dissapointing and exhausting.

The same case goes for Indonesia - why you might ask? Why this country. Well despite not being a rich country like Singapore, it is one of the countries where I as an 20 year old can confidently say that this country is where I feel that I can make a second home. Most Indonesian words go naturally and I can speak a bit Bahasa, but not that great or even medium. It sucks but the potential is huge and easy although lack the resources of studying.

To get into the point - my main desire is to work in Indonesia but I am aware that it is harder due to the political environment and jobless people. In addition I am not a person who has a brain of "Elon Musk" which the country would be very glad to have me.

I am young but determined, though these are what I can offer in the table:

I have three year of working experience (online) in Sales.

I only posses high school degree though did some certifications but I doubt the value of it

I can do any job which can be Call Center/E-commerce/Tourism/Sales (that would be good wkwk) anything honestly.

The reason why I say this is because I want to explain my situation and my profile. Bureaucratically speaking, is it still possible to work there or find a job around the Java region?

I am sure that one company or a startup might accept. What worries me is the government procedures. I don't know what I am here for but maybe looking for hope or something that maybe can give me confidence (yes I am aware it's dumb to expect something from internet)

I also want to let you know that I am in relationship, we will soon marry and i want to do something so that I can contribute and work harder.

Also to avoid misunderstanding. Do not think that I am planning to do something illegaly. I am a foreigner but not like those of Bali who violate the imigrattion rules. Staying away from troubles is part of my principles.

So before I close, thank you readers for reading this and I would thank you those who can understand the situation. In addition. Please forgive me for any grammar mistake because English is my second language and while I am a native speaker in fluency. I still make some mistakes.

Thank you.

Looking for some good shopping hotspots in the city, would love to hear some experiences!

Hey all, I will be traveling with my friends to Indonesia next month. Specifically to Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Surabaya.

Our sightseeing and touristy plans are all set, just wanted to know if there are any shopping hotspots or must visit markets in Jakarta. Just looking for some casual street shopping like clothes, shoes, bags etc. Nothing specific!

Would love to hear any experiences!

Best Restaurants

Hi Jakarta crew. I’m a bule food vlogger and I recently made a video ’Top 10 Restaurants Jakarta’. I actually got some great help from the Reddit Jakarta community to help me choose some restaurants. Anyway, the video was popular and I got lots of comments from locals regarding their favourite restaurants. So I thought I’d make another video ‘Top 10 Restaurants (As requested by you) Jakarta’

So I need your help again please 🙏🏼

There’s over 30 restaurants that have been recommended so need your advice on what should definitely make the list. Probably I will only have time to visit 12 or 13 of them to choose the top 10 from. My other consideration is that I want the restaurants to be diverse and representing different parts of Indo food culture, so ideally it won’t just be a bunch of minang restaurants or something like that. Anyway, I hope that makes sense. Thankyou in advance to anyone who helps, I gave you a shoutout in the last video and it’s closing in on 40k views. Anyway, here’s the list:

Lapo Porsea (Batak) x2 Bebek Bumbu hitam Madura Tinoor (menadonese) Noesaka Gulai Singkong Rawon Tungjang Pea Adhita Jaya (Balinese) Nasi Uduk Mas Dikun Ketoprak ciragil Pelangi seafood Layar Marpadotbe (Batak) Ayam Goreng Suharti (fried chicken) Sate khas Senayan Ayam Gepuk pak Gembus Pagi Sore (Minang) Bakso rusuk Samanhudi Bebek Kaleyo Bakmi GM Bandar djakarta Cabe ijo Ayam goreng suharti Sari Indah (Minang) Marco (Padang) Bale Lombok Wiro Sableng Gardens x2 Bumbu Den (Menadonese) 212 Kelapa Gading (seafood)

x2 means it was recommended twice. Really looks like some amazing food in there but I want the list to really resonate with the locals, probably sate Khas Senayan and Pagi sore won’t make the cut.

Here’s a link to the previous video:

Thanks everyone ☺️🙏🏼

Questions About Indonesian Work Contracts - Early Contract Termination

Hello fellow redditors of Indonesia.

First and foremost, I am asking on behalf of a friend and only have a vague understanding of Indonesian labor laws. Please forgive my lack of knowledge regarding this matter!

My friend recently had a job interview where the potential employer stated that she would have to commit to staying for at least three years. However, my friend wants to emigrate back to Europe, where we first met, and doesn't want to stay in Indonesia for that long. According to my research and what she told me, if she decides to terminate the contract early, she may be obligated to pay her employer for the remaining months from the date she terminates until the contract is set to end.

Despite this, I've come across many people on Reddit discussing their experiences in Indonesia, stating that they've successfully terminated contracts early and changed jobs.

My question is: Is it truly legal for my friend to be required to stay with her employer (or to incur debt) for the duration specified in the contract? I ask this because I am aware that in other countries, employers include similar clauses in job contracts but cannot enforce them legally.

Thank you in advance!

Bad Experience in Soekarno–Hatta International Airport and a question moving forward

So, today I am having a transit through Soekarno Hatta on my way to Jogja. My full transit is actually Athens-Doha-Jakarta-Jogja. Despite the assurances of the flight companies (Qatar from Athens to Doha and Garuda moving forward), after I checked in my luggage in Athens airport with the assurance I will pick them up in Jogja, the Qatar people called my name and told me that my luggage cannot move beyond Jakarta, and that I will have to pick them up, pass customs and then recheck. All that with a transit of 2.15 hours. Some local people I cooperate in Indonesia hired someone to pick me up, which hopefully will work, although not without a lot of stress.

My questions, however, is on my return, which has me from Jogja to Jakarta with Garuda and Jakarta to Jeddah with Saudia (one ticket) will I need to pick up my bags and recheck again? Because the transit is similar once more, 2 hours and 20 minutes. I hope someone can help

Need Advise for My Upcoming Visit

Hi, I'm going to Tangerang near Christmas day to attend family event, visit Bogor and back to Jakarta before New Year, so I have around 2-3 free day in Jakarta before fly back to my origin.
I will stay in Pullman Jakarta and planned to visit BXSea with my family, my questions are:
- Does BXSea really worth the hype?
- Could you please suggest a good tennis court that not really crowded near my place?
- Nice and cozy cafe for dining with my husband or any hidden gems in Central Jakarta?
- Can I use BNI Tapcash instead of Jaklingko Card for MRT?

Additional info: I am an omnivore. I eat halal and non-halal foods.
I have done the research but still need advise from Jakartans :D
Thank you in advance!

PSA - be mindful of the risk bisa kena tilang 2x dengan adanya ETLE

Jadi karena satu dan lain hal gw terburu" dan conciously ambil jalur busway (I know, I have no excuse), apesnya di penghujung jalurnya ternyata ada coklat yg menunggu dan gw memilih untuk "damai" titip tilang di tempat secara informal.

A few weeks later, gw dapet surat tilang ETLE dikirim ke rumah dan diminta bayar denda tilangnya, obviously karena gw damai informal sebelumnya I have no way/ proof to argue against it.

I'm not here to justify my wrongdoing, I'm actually quite impressed with the ETLE process, just a reminder that next time kalau kena tilang, consider this possibility sebelum consider "damai".

Looking for shops that sell Jackersfield apparel

Hi everyone, I will be visiting Jakarta in December and I'm looking to buy some T-shirts from this local brand called Jackersfield (https://jackersfield.com/). I think they used to be called Jackhammer & Co a few years back.

Does anyone know which malls or shops carry this brand? Would like to find brick and mortar stores as I prefer to try the fitting of the T-shirts in stores. Thanks in advance!

Travelling to yogya over new year

Hi. I’ll be visiting Jakarta in December and my plan is to leave on Jan 29 to Bandung by train then the Dieng Plateau for a few days by bus, and on to Yogya arriving there around January 3. Will this be a peak time for domestic tourists though? Do many Indonesians travel over the new year? Will it be hard to get hotel rooms and transport if I haven’t booked? If possible I would like to be flexible and not book too much in advance, so just wondering if that is suitable for this particular time of year. Thanks!

Forms and Sim

Hello and thank you for answering my questions so far. So I will be arriving in Jogjakarta from Jakarta (trip starts in Greece actually) with a Visa i got beforehand. Do I need to fill any other forms for entry? Beforehand or upon arrival?

Also I am planning to buy a local SIM. Any suggestions on the company? Is there a procedure to do so or do I just buy one and insert in my phone? Do the employees usually help you with the setup?

Indonesia Visa online or arrival

Hello all. Have you had a good or bad experience pre paying for your visa online to Indonesia? I heard a story of one guy that paid ahead of time, but the immigration counter still made him pay in person. I'll be landing in Jakarta at midnight when I go.

Side note I figure I can share my experience with Indonesia immigration. My first trip to Indonesia I went from Singapore to Medan. I actually wasn't aware I had to pay for a visa. My original plan was to exchange my dollars to rupee at the airport. When I was turned to the immigration counter they asked for me to pay with Rupee, but I only had dollars and asked to pay with my credit card. They said they don't take credit card, but could take my dollars. When I took my dollars out she saw I had some 20s and after I paid the immigration employee asked if I wouldn't mind exchanging my 20s for her 100 dollar bill. She said the reason is that 20s are hard to get in Indonesia. For fear of upsetting the immigration employee I said sure no big deal. Later after immigration and luggage pickup I went to turn the dollars to rupee. They took it all except that hundred the immigration employee gave me. They said that bill was pre 2000 and they could only accept newer bills. That was obviously the reason she did that, but in the end it didn't matter. I was never able turn it to rupee, but I used it back in the states no issue.

What to do for New Years Day?

Hi everyone!

I'm staying in South Jakarta, near Setiabudi, for a few weeks to study.

I have January 1st to explore, and I am wondering what the best option is to do as I imagine places will be closed for the public holiday.

Some options I am thinking of include trips to Bogor or Kota Tua.

Any advice is appreciated!

Best Spa/Massage South Jakarta

Hi all, been going to Jakarta many years and basically I am looking for a spa location that provides a massage but not extras. If anyone knows Fortune Spa in Sudirman area, then that is what I am after but I am sure they only offer massages at a high premium and with extras although someone correct me if I am wrong?

But yeah a spa with pool, sauna, food/drinks, maybe tvs, massage etc.

Thanks in advance!

Hi all. I was reading online can observed moving household good from outside Indonesia to Indonesia could be complex. Just wanted to check if any expats had that experience and can recommend some experts/ logistics partners who do household goods shifting for people moving into Jakarta?

Need the logistics partner to help me get a sense of when to book, what documents are required and estimation of time and costs. Example do I need to have Kitas while making booking? Do we need to pay customs etc. that’s why looking beyond just plain packers and movers. Thx.

Recommended places to swing by in the Angcol area

Hi all! I'm (24F) planning to travel to Jakarta in February with my partner (25M) and his mom (50sF). I'd love to get recommendations of places to go to since we're planning to stay in the area for 3D2N - 4D3N (not sure yet since we haven't gotten the flight, but for sure from Feb 13 to Feb 16 we'll be there).

Any activities or good food would be great, as me and my partner are a lot into going around and eating new food. If you have any recommendations as to where to shop for music supplies and knickknacks or jewelry, that would be great as well. Thanks!

Street Food Recommendations

Hello, may I know where is the best place where I can buy street food? I will be staying at Ritz Carlton Pacific Place. It would be great if recommendations will be near my hotel. If otherwise, it would be great too as long as it's worth the long trip. 😊 Specifically, I would like to try street food I can only eat in Indonesia/Jakarta. Thank you.

Appreciation post for Jakarta

I am from India. But living abroad. Recently visited Indonesia and for few weeks stayed at Jakarta as I was working remotely. Jakarta feels like a major indian city like bombay, pune etc. There are many good things which are better in jkt than Indian metros.

  1. The roads are way better. No potholes on the high ways. Roads are built better.
  2. People do not honk.

Thank you for not honking. I wish Indians learn it in next 50 years. I don't know how you manage to ride bike in those traffic without honking. But it's awesome. 3. Did not see any road rage. people have civics sense. In 2 weeks I did not see road rage, fights and accidents in jakarta. Which I see everyday in india. 4. Thank you grab and go jek. Guys are awesome. They never refuse any trip. They never asked me for a tip. They never over charge me. They never scam me. In india, bike taxi always try to scam and they charge extra else they refused to go. I am comparing with india because india and indo economy are quite similar and per capita also similar level. I know there are negative things about jakarta, like traffic, pollution etc.. but that is there in india also. Jakarta night life is awesome. The malls are good. May not be like dubai. But still very good. I found the food prices to be much cheaper. I ate food at Warung and it felt like having indian food. Very similar chicken curry rice, vegetables. The staff always tried to help me and never disrespected me. Infact many time they were happy to know about my background and wanted to talk more. I see that bollywood has big influence there. Almost all the local girls whom I spoke to, listens to bollywood songs and totally up to date with bollywood happening. I was surprised and happy to see that.

Trains: I took a train from yogakarta to jakarta. I am really impressed by it. The best part is, I booked tickets 1 day in advance not 90 days. It took 7hrs. Costed me around 400k. Everything was clean. Clean toilet. Clean window. No rush. No garbage anywhere. Such a nice experience at a cheap price. In fact the train seats are very comfortable and wide. Heard there is a bullet train whosh. I will try it next time. Great to see indonesia is developing so fast. I really liked everything about jakarta except the air pollution and many open canals, sewage etc. which I think is very hard to fix. So hopefully government can manage it better. I will come back again to Indonesia for sure. It's such a big country and takes a lot of time to visit. I visited jakarta, yoga, malang, Ubud, sanur. See you soon Indonesia.

Hello, I am travelling for the first time in Indonesia. I will be arriving to Jakarta Soekarno Hatta on the 27th at 6 pm. I have a train ticket to Gambir to take the train to Jogja at 9.40 pm. Is that viable? Also, is it safe travelling at night with the train?
