Can you still pay in cash for most transactions in Jakarta?

Sorry, this question has probably been asked a few times but I am getting rather mixed answers :( as a tourist visiting Jakarta for a couple of days, will I be able to use cash for most transactions? I read that most vendors/shops only take QR/QRIS but that seems to be tied to a local bank so it won't work for me. I will of course bring credit card as well but just wanted to understand the payment landscape for foreigners in Jakarta (and would prefer to pay in cash).

Terima kasih!

Panoramic train

Hello. I’ve been trying to figure this one out for days with no luck, and I could really use help. I’m wanting to go Jakarta to Yogyakarta via the panoramic train. It’s not showing up on Traveloka. I can book a train from Jakarta to Bandung and then a separate booking to Yogyakarta but the layover seems to be 10 hours in Bandung if I do this. I’m looking to go December 1st.

C1 visa 60 days single entry problem

Hi everyone!

So I applied online about 6 days ago on the official website for 60 days visa but they still not approved it but tomorrow I have my flight. My question is can I enter with 30 days Visa on Arrival and then after 30 days fly out of the country and back with the 60 day visa that I applied online?

Where to hang out with Indon hipsters?

*Apologies, I didn’t realise indon was viewed as a derogatory term! It was not my intention to offend at all! apologies for my ignorance - now noted! I would edit the headline but as I understand, you cannot do that *

Hi there. I’m heading to Jakarta over the Christmas/new year period - been once before, a long time ago and curious to see what the city is like now. I’ve been researching on instagram and already bookmarked a few places that look interesting - an indie bookstore in Pasar Santa, a cassette bar playing indon disco, the MACAN museum, the street scene around Blok M, a punk bar. Where else would you go to see what’s happening in graphic design, cool Indon architecture (eg Andra Marin), vintage stores, street art, nice cafes and generally fun laidback bars? Interested in seeing different kinds of subcultures (dangdut?) and basically getting a sense of Jakarta as a modern creative city. Thanks for any suggestions! :)

Some advice for concert ticket buying

Hey yall. I'm not really sure if this sub is the correct sub for my inquiry. I have plans to attend a concert in Jakarta next year. I'm not from Indonesia so I'm not really familiar with how the ticket selling works online. Do you guys have any tips? like should I camp in the website hours before the tickets go live in the website, what PC or how fast should my internet be etc. (this is how I prepare to buy tickets in my country 🥲) Will be buying the tickets in tiket . com. Some notes: I already made an account in tiket . com, & I'm also curious on how the virtual queueing will work. Thanks to those who can give some insights!

Single Expat in Jakarta

Hi all, I’m (26M) considering a role in Jakarta in financial services of around 1-2bil IDR.

I’ve read a couple of forums but would love to get some insight

What kind of life would this afford me? How much could I save/should budget? What is single life in Jakarta like compared to day Australia? What can I do with this extra cash aside from travel?

Thanks

I made a video investigating the Tanjung Luar Shark Market in East Lombok. If something isn't done soon about the amount of sharks being sold at this DAILY market the effect on the ocean will be catastrophic. Please share with as many people as possible to raise awareness of this huge issue! 🦈 🇮🇩

14 day trip to Jakarta

I’m taking my family on a trip to Jakarta at the end of the year. We plan to only spend this time in Jakarta and surrounding areas (We’ve been to Bali before). Here’s my plan for the trip and I would like to get your thoughts on it.

Just a couple of things to mention:

  • My kids are 9 and 12 years old.
  • We’re not really into museums and historical sites.
  • We intentionally left some days for relaxation.

Hotel: Grand Hyatt

  • Day 1: Grand Indonesia Mall, Monas, Istiqlal mosque, (suggest something else to do after)
  • Day 2: Spend day at the hotel (swimming pool), plaza Indonesia, watch a movie, walk around Menteng (Any particular street to go to?)
  • Day 3: (suggestions for things to do around this area?)
  • Day 4: Slow morning, check out from hotel, (maybe Grand Indonesia Mall after)

Hotel: Holiday Inn Gajah Mada

  • Day 4: Check in, relaxing at the hotel, Kuta Tua at night
  • Day 5: ITC Mangga Dua (Fake market), Batavia PIK at night
  • Day 6: Dufan Ancol, walk around Ancol Beach
  • Day 7: Kuta Tua tour (old city), Pantjoran Chinatown
  • Day 8: Kepulauan Seribu Regency (Thousand Island)
  • Day 9: Checkout early

Hotel: The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton

  • Day 9: Check-in, Spend the day at the Pacific Mall, Kidzania, watch movie
  • Day 10: Taman Mini Indonesia Indah
  • Day 11: Volcano trip
  • Day 12: swimming and relaxing at the hotel
  • Day 13: Checkout and head to the Airport

Rush hour from CBD to airport at 5.30pm Fri evening

Hi everyone!

I'm gonna be in Jakarta for work in Nov. I have a meeting that ends around 5.00-5.30pm on a Friday.

My company is asking me if I can take a late flight out of Jakarta that same night (8pm or 9pm+).

Assuming my meeting is somewhere in the CBD (sorry, I don't have the location yet), how long would it take to get to the international airport in a taxi at 5.30pm on a Fri?

Google Maps says up to 1 hour 25 mins. Does that sound right?

Thanks very much!

So many questions for a beginner....

I made this account to look into traveling for the New Year to visit a dear friend who's studying abroad, and I want to make sure I'm very well prepared as this will be my first time traveling overseas alone.

The short-term goal is to visit Jakarta for a few days, 3 at minimum, to spend time with my friend before I'd have to return. However, anything can happen within 3 days and I want to be sure I have my ducks in a row. If I'm able to book my flight, these are my questions...

  1. The flight I'm considering would have me land at the Soekarna airport at midnight. My friend is going to meet me there as she has the Grab app, but I assume correctly that Grab works 24 hours a day, similar to Lyft/Uber?

  2. The same flight that I'm considering will have 1 stop only, and it'll be at the Narita International Airport. The flight connection will be for 2 and 1/2 hours, what should I do to keep myself occupied as I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving the airport.

  3. I have antidepressants/anxiety medication and I've read on keeping the bottles intact with the medical information, but will I possibly need anything else?

  4. Unfortunately, I can't sign up for a Wise card right now as it so happens to be on hold here, but is the digital card successful in Jakarta?

  5. My stay would be 2-3 days, 3 minimum that I'm hoping for, and while my friend insists on wanting to pay, I don't want her to do it for my sake, so how much cash would be feasible to bring? We'd really only go to the mall if anything and that would be it.

  6. May do a day tour on the last day before I depart, are there any recommendations?

  7. I have a present in mind for my friend, a new drawing tablet, and I'll be traveling through United Airlines, and the goal is to give it to her as a gift (I really, REALLY want to get this for her), and looking at the baggage requirements:

Carry-on bag: 9 in x 14 in x 22 in (23 cm x 35 cm x 56 cm). Personal items: 9 in x 10 in x 17 in (22 cm x 25 cm x 43 cm).

The tablet in mind is a Wacom Cintiq 22 and the dimensions are: 570 x 359 x 40 mm / 22.4 x 14.1 x 1.6 in. I've reached out to UA customer service even and they said this is acceptable, but in your opinion, would this be able to fit as well? For such an expensive item, what luggage would you recommend for this, since I'd have to bubble wrap it and whatnot if the box itself won't fit.

Sorry for all these questions, but though I'm hoping to fly in January, I just want to make sure that I can properly prepare ahead of time.

“Quiet Luxury” Men’s Clothing Brand Recommendations

Hi all! Im coming to the end of my 3 week Indonesia trip and I’m so sad to leave, but I have to :(

Whenever I travel I like to buy an article of clothing from the places I go. Unfortunately I didn’t come across too many clothing stores on this trip as I was mostly in rural areas. I have 1 day in Jakarta and would like to buy a shirt from a local Indonesian brand. I’m not into street wear, more so into “quiet luxury.” Please share any brands/stores I can hit up! Thanks :)

Yogyakarta Train vs Flight

Hello I'm a tourist from the States meeting up with my girlfriend from Medan in Jakarta. We are going to Yokyakarta to those cool temples and there is a museum I want to see some rare Japanese WWII planes. Is it recommended to take a train for the comfort and views? I see there is a 1 hour flight vs the 8 hour train, but I thought a train might be a fun experience. What experience do folks have here with that? Are there different brands of trains and one you recommend? I am thinking to try and find one that has lay back seats.

Birthday Brunch

Hi, hi!

Going to Jakarta early next month for a concert. Our very brief visit also happens to fall on my boyfriend's birthday so I'm looking for a great place to grab a birthday bruch/lunch/early dinner in the city. Something unusual, something fun... I'm open to ideas.

We'd hope to give Le Petit Chef a try, but due to flight + concert times that's a no go. I should mention that we're also travelling with two friends so nothing too romantic or over the top, please. All of us visiting live in China, which means we're pretty happy to enjoy anything but Chinese food. Wow, we sound so fussy, but I swear we're not 😂

Budget friendly is always appreciated, but this isn't a total dealbreaker.

Thanks in advance for any insights and ideas! 🙇🏻‍♀️

Edit: staying West Jakarta (Palmerah district), but as always... will travel for good food! 😁

Question for local men

So I’ve been to Indonesia and really like the people. Good solid friendly people

I’ve noticed guys on forums like these and also noticed in real life where guys from here (the west) are going to places in Asian for women

Quite often it is just for sex rather than marriage and commitment to the woman

Obviously we’ve all seen how seedy, degenerate and sick Thailand has become largely due to the Thai government opening their doors to sex tourists and other perverts

  1. Do you worry Indonesia could become like that?

  2. What do you think of these foreign men travelling just to have sex with women in your country (for some reason they’re beginning to move out from Thailand/vietnam) to other SEA countries

  3. Do local guys not have initiatives to try and stop this (maybe some sort of lobbying of governments or social movements to oppose it)

  4. How are these guys received in Indonesia? It must be weird for local men to see guys travelling all the way to Indonesia from the west just to have sex with women there?

  5. How are those women who do this thought of?

PS I’m not talking about guys who are marrying and committing to an Indonesian woman in a real relationship

Heritage?

Just another boring Friday aftrernoon after Jumatan this question just pops out of my head. How do I track my familiy heritage. I never really pay attention back then when my folks still around. I mean I know at least who is my grandparents from both side though I have no recollection of them, just a bunch of pictures. I still remember my grandma from my mother though since she was the last grandparents who died. But I never really no who is my grandma from my father's side, and I don't even know her name. My folks never really told me a story about their past that much either, if not at all. And it's crazy to think that I just recently learn an interesting story about my mom decade after her passing away from my brother that she was one of the refugee of Bandung lautan api incident in 1946. She was born in 1942 by the way, so I doubt she has many memories about that even if I asked her. So I was curious if there is actually a way to track my heritage far further to the past like maybe 200 years ago or so. It would be cool if I can do that. But honestly I kinda doubt it. Indonesia is a pretty young country after all. We just got our independence almost 100 years ago, I doubt heritage documentation exist even beyond that since we were too busy fighting kompeni with sharp bamboo.

What do you guys think? Is there actually a way to track our heritage in this country?

Gossip, bad looks etc

Can someone explain to me please.

I'm a bule, I live in Jakarta. I'm 35 years old.

Whenever I'm with a female friend or was with my ex girlfriend. The looks that people give them/me is not normal. Even when we are eating food, or walking around. It's like people are looking down on myself and them.

Anyone who does talk to us. Asks them questions such as. Are you married? Is this your husband.

Why is this anyone's business?

It really annoys me.

Jakarta Airport transit, different terminals

I'm transiting through Jakarta (inbound and outbound are international flights). Arriving in through terminal 2, departing through terminal 3. Same day flights. I have checked baggage which I'll try and check all the way through to destination if I can.

Am I able to transit through, or do I need to get a visa on arrival? Any other tips esp with my checked luggage?

Thanks!

Looking for Joyland Festival buddies!

Hi! I'll be traveling to Jakarta this November to attend Joyland (Nov 22-24, GBK Senayan). This will be my first time in Indonesia and I'm pretty thrilled! Excited to navigate the BRT haha. Going for Bombay Bicycle Club and Real Estate, but also stoked to see the rest of the headliners.

I'll be going solo and if anyone else is going and wants to meet up, we can form a group!

About me: 28F from the Philippines! Huge fan of indie music, gigs, travel, specialty coffee.

Makasih! Cheers!

Beach City International Stadium

Hello! I hope everyone is having a good day.

I am planning to attend a concert that will be held in Beach City International Stadium. The ticketing says that Ancol Entrance Ticket is not included. Would you know how much will this ticket cost? And any insights about what’s in and around the venue, like how to get there?

If ever, this will be my first time i Jakarta so thank you very much in advance!

CGK international to domestic transfer (Batik - Lion Air)

Hi, I am travelling to West Timor (East Nusa Tenggara), and am planning to fly from Singapore Changi Airport to Jakarta (CGK) via Batik Air, and a connecting flight from Jakarta (CGK) to Kupang (KOE) via Lion Air.

On the booking website it does not indicate if we are required to manually transfer our luggage between airlines, but we are transferring from the international terminal to the domestic terminal. Would we be required to manually collect our luggage from the international terminal, then re-check our luggage at the domestic terminal?

And would we be required to go through immigration again at the domestic terminal as well?

Also, we planned to have 2 hours between our estimated arrival time in CGK and our departure from CGK to Kupang, does anyone know if this would be sufficient? or is this timing too tight?

Thanks in advance! :D
