Hurling (Irish: Iománaíocht/Iomáint) is an outdoor team sport of ancient Gaelic origin, administered by the Gaelic Athletic Association(GAA), and played with sticks made from ash called hurleys and a ball called a sliotar. The game has prehistoric origins, has been played for at least 3,000 years, and is thought to be the world's fastest field team sport in terms of game play. Once described as a mix between hockey and murder, the fast paced, hard hitting game has followed the Irish around the world.

I've heard lots of opinions on this so I need to settle this, what position is your best player played: Centre forward, Midfield or Centre back?

Hurley Size

Im sure this comes up a lot in this sub but how short are the hurls getting these days? I’m 5’8” and use a 33” based on the “just below the wrist” sizing I was taught.

Watching the higher levels the hurls look like tennis rackets in their hands. should I be using a shorter hurl based on the way the game is played now?

I play mid/half-forward btw

Hurling Lineout App?

Does anyone have any recommendations on an app to load you teams lineout into?

Or if not any recommendations on a print off template you like?

Traditionally I've just been using scrap paper, but it would be nice to have a better system.

Where to watch Hurling in February '25?

I'll be traveling in Ireland next February and would LOVE to see a hurling game. I can't seem to find any schedules on the various club websites I've been checking out and would love to plan parts of my trip around watching a game. Any advice?

Shouldering rule question

Hello all, I just started Hurling at college and had a question on the proper form for shouldering/charging a opponent. I am aware that it is a foul to charge from the front or back. But my captain told me not to step and crouch when attempting to shoulder an opponent. This seems strange to me because that is how I get most of the power to preform a shoulder. And most of the time my opponents are either shorter than me or bending down to get the sliotar. I checked the GAA rules and saw no mention of this particular issue. I was wondering if there was any substantially to my captains claim or if it is a NCGAA specific rule.

Moving from corner back to wing back

Hi lads, I currently play corner back for my team and would love to be able to move up to the wing. I’m big enough at 6’3 and fairly fit my biggest issue is my on the ball ability. My whole role in the team is essentially to be a brute and break down balls and put in tackles because I can’t hand pass, my lift is shocking and flicky sort of play is non existent. Any tips for training over the off season to get better in these areas.

See a game in Cork 14/12/24

Flying in to Cork from Manchester on 14th December for one night only. Is the hurling season still going? Would there be anywhere we could go and watch a game live? We're not really bothered what level it is we'd just like a bit of atmosphere? Thanks

County style handle?

American-born hurler here:

Star has rolled out a modern website website similar to Torpey. I love the cork-style bas, which they do have ( https://starhurley.ie/product/cork-style-hurl-3/ )

They have a prompt for which county-style handle you want: Cork, Tipp, Kilkenny. They have a design page that should exaplain the difference between each but links for each handle come back broken.

Curious if anyone has specifics/details? I would normally just go default, but its making me select so I want to understand the differences.

I'm talking 50 yards to70. 40 to 60. I've improved alot over last couple of years to get to about 50 55 max. I between 45 and halfway line. I need themtogo further before next year's season. I can pay a coach for Saturday sessions. I'm in Louth.

Soaking hurl in linseed oil?

Was talking to someone who’s hurl was very weathered and yellowed and they said they leave their hurls soak in linseed oil… is that a good or bad thing?

Would there be any negatives to it?

Goalkeeper Hurls

Well lads, I’m in the market for a few new sticks. I’m a keeper so just like every other goalie I’m as picky as they come when it comes to the 3 foot of timber in my hands. Long story short I’ve been looking at a few brands and wanted to get your take on it. I’m caught between 3 ultimately.

  1. Torpey Bambú Goalkeeper
  2. Fitzgerald Elite Goalkeeper Hurl
  3. 65 Hurls Goalkeeper Hurl
