I found them in my neighborhood while walking.
They were separated by a group of geese sitting and feeding on whatever they can find. I didn’t realize until they stood up and limped that they were injured. On top of being Leucistic (which can make them lonely for their difference) They are also injured. Even when flying away with all the others it kept a distance. It’s heartbreaking. What should I do if I see them again. I couldn’t find or reach a wildlife rehabilitation center close to where I live. I keep getting universal hints to leave them be but I don’t know.
Nothing more to update other than he's almost done with his round of antibiotics, he's grazing and eating and drinking. He is acting completely.normal aside from preening that affected area quite a bit... im sure it's sore and feels weird. But there's hasn't been ANY blood or sny other wounds spotted since Sunday night. He's getring moved back into the coop/run today. But he is being kept separate from rhe chickens and in a clean spot of the coop screened off just for gim so no wood shavings or dirt gets into his sore areas. Tomorrow or Sunday I will be stopping the wound spray snd the honey coconut oil mixture on the wounds and switching to just regular coconut oil. And if it stays pretty warm like it has the last few days (like 70s in NOVEMBER???) I'll put a layer of Vaseline on top of his cuts/abrasions just to make sure there's no flies that are able to get to the affected areas. Just a precaution. But other than that.. he's doing well! He's going to be just fine. Might take a little to recover those feathers.. but I'd rather deal eoth that over a severely injured goose or my baby still not acting like himself. I also have some molt spray that's supposed to encourage healthy feathers/feather growth and all that. Along with his vitamins I've been giving him.. he shouldn't have any issues eith growing back his feathers. He's abput to be put to bed along with the chickens bc the sun is setting. So a little melatonin will hopefully ease and nerves he has getring moved back into the coop and having to stay in a screened off area inside the coop overnight. Ryan's doing very well. And I am so happy and proud of him. He's such a strong boy. And we are both just SO lucky! Thank.you everyone that wished him well ❤️
I get about 500 or so of these guys every year at my local double-pond. They come here to have their babies and teach them. They head out once things freeze. Love watching them grow every year. This is just the smaller of the two ponds, and there are normally more than this, but some have left already.
Such a good little goose 😭 the way he inquisitively peers about when he waddles is so freakin cute
I just noticed today when I went to feed my goose (3yrs old) that she was having trouble walking. She was laying down when I came out, then she stood and could only take three steps before she would topple over and lay down. She did this twice before she just gave up and stayed down.
I brought her inside and have her in a kennel with some bedding, but I’ve noticed that she also has diarrhea (brownish), she is shaking her head some, a weaker “honk”, and is drinking -what I think is- an abnormal amount of water. She is eating fine though but has not moved at all in the 4 hours I’ve had her inside.
Any thoughts or advice? I’m going to call a vet if I can find one that will see a goose, but they’re all closed until the morning.
What does everyone give their geese for snacks? Mine get romaine lettuce, wild bird seed, apples. Occasionally they get bread or pizza crust.
My goose spends her days having around my car which is frustrating. She has plenty of garden, and ponds but she's aggressive around the car and causes a lot of mess.
Any ideas why she's doing this and how I can discourage her?
Ryan has no serious injuries. I gave a really good inspection and feel over the affected area+the rest of his body. The majority of the blood I saw on him that night most likely came from a broken pin/blood feathers which ypu can sort of see in this video. (It was the best video I could get of the affected area with my dad's help) you can see about where he's got a thinner/balding spot where his feathers got ripped out though.. but there are no puncture, bite or gashes anywhere on him. The only other affected spot was on the edge of his roght wing...like his elbow has a small spot that looks a little raw and has a small cut.
He is back to his normal self. He's flapping his wings happily. Running. Grazing, eating and drinking, vocalizing, preening. He's one tough cookie. And so so so very lucky. Both of us are in this scenario. Which I am SO garetful for and relieved about. He most likely was protecting his chickens while they were in the coop and he was in the run (the run and coop doors were still open at this point in the night. Going forward as soon as sun sets and NO later, coop and run will be locked and birds all into the coop safely..especially around this time of year.) He must've chased off and fought off whatever it was into the woodchipped area next door to the run. Which is all fenced in.. but the woodchip and grass areas aren't 100% predator proof. But we will be putting in chicken mesh wire on any larger gaps in fencing and on the wooden gates for added protection. We ha e a radio running 24/7 now and a camera set up in their run that I can watch from my phone whenever. I am so proud of him. For saving the chickens.. AND coming out relatively unscathed. He is a tough boy. And my absolute world.
As scruffy as he looks now and as big of a chunk of feathers I found that night..he is fine. He will be perfectly fine. And more precautions will be taken going forward. As well as a tight schedule for ALL of the birds.
He is still in his hospital room for another day or two just so I can be 1000000o% sure. He's on his antibiotics still and will finish his round of them ..just in case. He's given baby aspirin for the pain/soreness..although less is given now as he doesn't seem to be in pain now. Only once in the morning/early afternoon. Melatonin for stress/night time. His vitamins are being taken. B12 and vitamin e with selenium. After his two epsom salt baths to flush the area out, only regular warm water baths going forward. But im dressing his wound(s) And area after each bath every day with poultry wound spray and a raw honey mixture with coconut oil to keep any infections away and just to keep the area clean and healing.
He is doing fantastic. And in a few days will be put back into the run/coop. But will be kept in a smaller area of the coop that is screened in completely..will be lined with blankets and towels so he's comfy and his area can be kept clean and he will be kept out of woodshavings and the dirt to make sure there's no irritants or way he can get his cut dirty. Even though it's not deep or major. I want to do everything I can...JUST IN CASE. Ykno? I'll be checking on his progress and healing every day. Hopefully within a week or two be will be fully healed up and growing in more feathers in that one spot and will be able to mingle again woth the chickens and graze and stuff "freely". I say freely in quotes bc obviously I'll be keeping a close eye on him when he's not in the coop or run. He's a bad ass and strong and beautiful and fierce and so so so resilient. He's going to be perfectly fine. The whole thing looked SO much worse than it actually was. Not to take away from the fact that it was an absolutely horrible and devastating thing to happen. Period. But he is hardly wounded. And is doing amazing. I am so relieved. I am so happy he's okay.
Thanks for listening
My geese sleep in a big stone barn filled with hay, they share the room with chickens, turkeys and other birds. When I open the door in the morning to release the dinosaurs, the geese go out first and scream loudly as they walk towards their pool. Is this some kind of ritual?
I'm trying to find the quieter of the geese species
I like how they look but I'm in a residential area and need the "quieter" of the breeds.
Been looking at pilgrims but these cute little guys caught my attention!
