Guidance on buying my first GBAs (for personal use and attempting my first basic mods)

  • I want two GBAs, either SP or OG I don't mind either way as it's primarily to trade Pokemon between men 3 games
  • I'm also pretty eager to try restoring/re-shelling a GBA, so buying a cheaper damaged console is an option if it means spending less to ultimately get a nicer looking result
  • I've trawled all the websites and have found some interesting listings, I just don't have the background knowledge to know whether they are actually worth it or whether I still don't have a good idea of GBA prices- it's hard to estimate when quality is so variable and even factors like "comes with the box" or "literally ships as the console and nothing else" which further skews and confuses my estimates.

I'll describe the listings I'm currently on the verge of hitting "buy now", I'd love any opinions. I could share photos in the comments but idk if it'll be necessary really.

  1. GBA AGB-001 Clear/Glacier, visually immaculate condition, plausibly all original shell and parts, but being sold as parts/not working due to the Gameboy powering off immediately after powering on, which is something I'd love to troubleshoot and fix.. Comes with charger but no box. Price for this is 45 USD/35 GBP/42 EUR.

  2. Literally exactly the same console down to the shell and colour, but this one works perfectly, only it is absolutely disgusting and in need of a serious IPO bath, and there is much more cosmetic wear, but at least it's guaranteed to work and only requires a deep clean to get into a decent condition. Comes with charger but no box, price is also 45 USD/35 GBP/42 EUR.

  3. A lot of two silver GBA SP AGS-001, both fully working but with pretty scuffed shells, listing includes 11 games, nothing special but could probably fetch 25 bucks for them. Comes with two chargers, no boxes. Price is 140 USD/110 GBP/130 EUR.

I know it's hard to give accurate advice based on just this post, but even just really general advice like idk "45 bucks is too much for an SP which doesn't work" even this would be massively insightful. Happy to provide any more info about the listings if it helps. Thanks!

A 30 year old animation bug in Donkey Kong Land for Game Boy is finally fixed

I'm so excited about this! It has bugged me for DECADES. So I wanted to post it here in case it is of interest to anyone else.

I made a video about it, but I'll also post the transcript, below.

https://youtu.be/YIQV08HxyH4

Donkey Kong Land is a very special game to me. I bought it when it first came out, way back in 1995. I loved it. I beat the game. I got 100% of the secrets.

And I continued to play it after that. Sometimes I'd just turn it on and admire the graphics. The animations and the backgrounds all just looked so real. It was unlike any other Game Boy game I'd ever seen.

But here's the problem. An animation was missing.

See, when you press down to duck, Donkey Kong covers his head with his hands. And every so often he lifts his hands up and peeks around, to see if there's any danger. But he wasn't doing it.

Now, I KNOW I'd seen him do it before. Didn't I? Was I confusing it with the SNES game? Or was I going crazy?

Heh, I actually took my copy of the game, boxed it up, and shipped it to Nintendo of America with a note describing the situation. A few weeks later they shipped the game back to me with a cute little note, saying something like, "We did a scan of your cartridge and didn't find any issues. Thank you for playing Nintendo" or whatever.

Some time after that I was playing again but THIS time, I saw it. He was doing the thing! Ok, so, I confirmed I wasn't crazy.

But why doesn't he do it all the time? And what triggers it?

Eventually I started doing some research and I discovered a consistent way to trigger the animation. Late in the game you meet Exspresso the Ostrich. If you duck while he's on-screen then the animation will start working.

And with the help of my programmer friend, I was able to find out why.

So, there's a random number generator in the game, and the animation will only play when the correct random number is selected. But here's the problem: the random number generator ONLY runs on the TITLE SCREEN.

Which means, when you start the game, you have like a 1 in 7 chance of seeing the animation.

But even if you do, it's not how the animation is supposed to look. It just plays non-stop, over and over again.

To truly fix it, the random number generator would need to run during gameplay, by inserting it into the main game loop. And now there's a patch that does just that.

So for the first time in almost 30 years, I'm finally able to see how the ducking animation in Donkey Kong Land is supposed to look!

AND, the fix for it is so simple it can even be applied on an official cartridge using the Game Genie.

By the way, this also affects the idle animation for Rambi the Rhinoceros. He's supposed to turn his head and pant like a dog. It's cute.

Now, do I think this was an actual bug and not just left out on purpose? Yeah, I think so. The fact that the code for Donkey Kong himself actually checks to see if the specific number was picked indicates that it was the intention. And it's such an obscure thing to look for in testing, you have to hold down AND wait long enough for the animation to trigger, that it could easily be missed. Also I don't see any reason for it NOT to have been included.

I gave the game a quick playthrough to see if the random number generator affected any other aspect of the game but, I couldn't find anything.

And there you go! For the first time ever, Donkey Kong Land now plays the ducking animation the way it was most likely always intended.

...Huh. I should mail the patch to Nintendo of America, tell them I'm all set.

Modded GBC

Backlit screen is a game changer. I had a GBC for many years as a kid but I didn't realize until a few years ago you could buy a mod kit for it. Been great replaying games on original hardware.

Save Game Cleared Out

Hey guys I am devastated. Seven hours of gameplay just vanished. I installed this battery myself, and while I was playing my Gameboy battery died and the system turned off. When I reloaded, my save was completely missing. I don't know what happened and I'm so sad. What could have caused this? Is it installed incorrectly? How could it have lost all my data?

GBA sp doesn't charge

I bought my GBA sp used in 2022and it worked fine, I put it in storage and forgot about for about a year until I found it about a week ago. The battery was swelled and it wouldn't turn on so I bought a new battery, put it in, and it worked fine for about an hour, until I went to plug it in and the charging light did not come on and it does not charge. Is there anything I can try to get it to charge?

Mission Impossible GBC remote volume problems?

Hello, I have Mission Impossible for GBC (with properly replaced fresh save battery), and I have been programming it with my TV remote to operate the TV as a fun party trick. I have zero problem programming power to A, menu to B, channel down to Left on d pad, and channel up to Right on d pad. However, it is extremely finicky with volume, and refuses to program volume to up and down on d pad.

But, all my buttons work perfectly on my GBC. All the buttons work perfectly on my remote. I have used them both a lot in the past couple years, and never once had an issue. Also, the IR blaster on GBC and IR receiver on TV. work perfectly, as it does power/menu/channel up and down perfectly every time. Literally nothing is faulty, but it just flat out refuses to program volume for some reason.

I am looking very closely at the screen and see i am not accidentally hitting two buttons on d pad (like up and also accidentally left or something). It is doing exactly the same thing when I successfully programmed the other buttons. It just decides to literally not do anything only when I program volume.

I have tried other buttons for volume, too... left and right, and B and A. Doesn't work. I reset everything, re-program again, and power/menu/channel change all program perfectly, but volume is just giving me a big ole metaphorical middle finger and doing nothing, and idk what I am doing wrong or what is wrong. Any ideas?

EZFlash Omega DE lost fast-foward/turbo/speedhack after v2.4?

Hey everyone.

My EZFlash Omega DE seems to have lost the ability to do FF/Turbo/2x Speed after the latest Analogue Pocket v2.4 firmware update. I used to be able to press SEL + UP to speed up the game.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Do a power indicator mod for GBA exist?

Hi! Basically the title.

I'm kinda new to modding and I would like to have a power indicator on my modded GBA. It has an IPS screen and a lithium battery with usb-C, but when the console starts dying at some point, the green LED starts flickering and the console turns off quickly.

I would like to avoid this by adding a power indicator suitable for a battery mod, which indicates when the battery is running out of energy. I know that exists but it's made to the GBC, anyone knows about the GBA? Thank you!

GBA immediately shuts off. What to check next?

Have a GBA I'm trying to get working. When powering up, the power light flickers for a second then goes off.

So far I have

  • Cleaned out the power switch (fully taken apart and cleaned)
  • Replaced all caps
  • Checked voltage through the F1 fuse/switch

All looking good, what can I check next? There's no obvious damage/corrosion on the board.

Question about ghosting!

So, I’m trying to set up RetroArch shaders to be as accurate as possible, but I have a problem… I’ve never owned a Gameboy Color or Gameboy Advance. So I have no idea how much ghosting they have. generally id assume they have half as much as the DMG, and both the GBC and the GBA have the same amount of ghosting. Looked everywhere on the internet for some close-ups of the screens, but to no avail…

These CR1616 battery holders are awesome.

Original battery manufactured in ‘98 had 0.16v in it, yet somehow I have batteries in other games manufactured in ‘92 that still had 3.24v. Wild stuff.

Esp32 cart reader help

Hey guys! I’m currently building something at the moment that involves a esp32 and a custom rom of just a gif on a cartridge, just wondering if it’s possible to use only a few of the cartridge readers pins to display a gif only? Theres only a few pins available on my esp32 so I’m trying to use as few as I can. Thanks

Can we trade Pokemon between different Gameboy systems?

My friend and I want to play the original Pokémon games. I live in Japan, so we're playing Pokémon Red and Green. I have a (Japanese) GameBoy Advance SP and my friend has yet to buy an old GameBoy. Because the GameBoy Pocket and Color are much cheaper than the Advance handhelds he wants to buy those. My question is can we still trade and battle with different generations handhelds and what link cables do we need? I assume a GBC link cable? Does it work with my GBA?
