Welcome to this subreddit! It's a place to discuss fugues, share your own fugues, and offer advice and knowledge of genre of musical creation.
Feel free to share and discuss fugues by the old Baroque composers, and embrace the newly-written fugues by modern-day composers who still speak the Baroque language.
Rules:
1). No spam, violence, racism, or other deplorable things are allowed here.
2). Offer criticism and feedback; do not insult the creators or their creations.
3). This subreddit will not allow any modern techniques nor modern ideals to traditional fugal writing. Take this fugue by Shostakovich, for example. Something like this would not be allowed here. While it is a fugue, it does not adhere to traditional means of musical thought. 'Modern' technique refers to modulations to unrelated keys, multiple changes in time signature, and overall atonal subjects.
3a). An example of an acceptable modern-day fugal composition would be some examples: Fugue in A minor by Federico Maria Sardelli, Fugue in D by Grant Colburn, and Mark Moya. <- The subject is by Mark in the last video.
4). The goal is to learn from the great Baroque composers. Don't copy them, but be inspired by them. We are here to encourage ideas based on traditional means. That Bach Emulation Project on Youtube sounds a great deal like Bach, but a good ear can discern the differences.
5). Refer to this article if you have basic fugal questions. Inside the score has a great introductory video also.
6). r/contrapunctus, r/baroque, and r/classicalmusic are good subreddits for discussing counterpoint and Baroque means of creation.
7). New or modern works are welcome on r/composer.There may also be resources on r/musictheory as well.

It's been a dream of mine for a long time to become fluent in traditional counterpoint/voice leading, so I've been trying to teach myself in my spare time, using species counterpoint exercises, studying fugues, writing a number of fugue expositions etc. I still find fugues to be pretty hard to write but I recently managed to complete a short little fugue. The subject is based on the syllables of my partner's name, so it's all a bit tongue in cheek.
I would love to get some feedback on the counterpoint, what could be improved, or whatever else comes to mind. I feel like I could use a different set of eyes to help me detect issues with the counterpoint and potential solutions. Cheers!

I mostly write choral music, but felt like I needed a change. I haven't touched fugue for 30 years and that was a bare minimum at university, so this is an interesting journey for me. I would be grateful for any insights, advice and corrections. Thanks 😊
