Which state should I apply for FAFSA?

I'm attending an out-of-state college in NY while I'm a NJ resident. Looking through how to correctly fill out my FAFSA Form I discovered that it may matter which state I apply for financial aid from. I'm already having a hard time getting my and my father's FSA ID verified and want to make sure nothing else goes wrong. I've called and waited for answers to no avail. My father isn't tech savvy so I'm on my own with this. Hopefully, I can get some answers here.

I am confused with the 2024-2025 TAP, may need some help....

Hi Guys, I am an almost-graduated senior from a high school. I just have some general questions about the TAP that I could understand even if I went to the websites and looked at them.

  1. When should I do the 2024-2025 TAP? Can I do it this year? till of June 30, 2025?
  2. On the Student/Spouse's Income Section, where it says (filing a tax return; NYS of IT-201 or general 1040 tax return), since of 2022, I didn't do a tax return because I am a dependent under my parent's name, which they do their IT-201. Do I just put ( will not file a IT-201 and will not file a 1040 sort of something like that)? Or how does the whole IT-201 works?

Quarterly to regular semester

I was wondering if I took time off for medical school to get my MHA, but the program I went into is a quarterly semester deal. Suppose I am going back in July when my semester at my medical school starts. If my quarterly semester begins in June, can I take aid that's already awarded and then switch my school after I get the disbursement? I have one class left in the MHA, and I was hoping to avoid paying out of pocket.

Income in FAFSA before came to the US

What to do? In Fafsa form income for 2021 very low,$2000 earned outside of the US, but she came to the US in 2022. She doesn’t have any prove of that income. What to do? Should they approve the verification without prove of income or should she make a correction in Fafsa form or any other suggestion?

TAP not processed

I filled out TAP early April, and I got an email a few days back stating it wasn't processed due to not having a parent signature. I'm confused though because I uploaded the documents either the same day or the next with their signatures, yet it wasn't processed due to that reason. I also can't contact help at the moment because all appointment slots are taken, and it's almost commitment day and I'm really relying on TAP to pay off tuition since I received nothing from FAFSA. Is there anything I can do?

Cal grant

Hello I just recieved my UCSB finanaical aid package and noticed the cal grant. I have never heard of this at all before and looking at my school email they have never mentioned it as well. The requirements state that a GPA verification was due last month. Has that been extended like the fafsa? Can I still turn in my GPA?

Refund rejected

i’m currently a freshman in college and received an email this morning stating I had a check directly deposited into my savings account. When going to check the status of my account I realized it was no longer there. When calling my bank they told me they closed to the account ( without informing me) and they rejected my refund check. As a response I called my school’s Financial Aid Office and they told me they have no rejection on their side and the bank must be holding on to it. However when calling my bank again I didn’t receive much help and was told to call my office again. Does anyone have any advice or experience with this? I honestly have no idea how to get a hold of my refund and feel very defeated first thing in the morning.

Parent Plus Loan;

Does anyone know how Spring Parent plus loan is disbursed? Does half go to Fall, even if Fall is paid in full? Short of it, took out a loan for spring, only half was applied to the balance, can I cancel the other half, since the school won’t apply it to the balance? They said federal law forbids them from applying the whole amount.

FAFSA website says process successfully, but I got an email saying I haven't submitted it

Is this a glitch or something I need to be concerned about? I finished the FAFSA application earlier this month, but just received an email that reads:

" You started the 2024–25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form, but you haven’t submitted it yet. We strongly encourage you to complete the form as soon as possible to qualify for the maximum amount of aid possible."

I checked the website and it says my FAFSA application was processed successfully. Is there a step I'm missing?

Pell Grant over-awarded 12 years ago and the school expects paid back?

I recently received an email from my current school after graduation stating that I would not be eligible for future financial aid until an overpayment is taken care of. The issue is that the overpayment occurred in 2012, my year of graduation from my previous degree, and is just now being brought up 12 years later. This is the school’s error for awarding 50.012% over the 600% limit. Can I fight this?

Can my school’s financial aid department take money from my bank account after it was mistakenly disbursed?

Due to a financial aid error I had $1500 mistakenly deposited in my bank account. I fully intend to just send the entire amount back but before I do I was wondering if the financial aid department is allowed to reverse that amount.

I just don’t want it to be where the amount is taken out twice and I’m in an overdraft situation waiting for it to be fixed.

TAP residency

I applied for TAP and got denied for residency and made an appeal for Fall 2024. I came to the US in April of 2023. Then I got admitted to a NYS high school in May 2023 as a junior. Got my drivers permit on July of 2023 cause of some problems. The lease for the house has my name included from April of 2023. Also my parents filed state and federal taxes for 2023. But the bills of the house is with the rent so the bills do not have my name.

As far as I know from the TAP faq:

  1. To meet NYS residency requirements for student aid, applicant must:
  • have been a resident for the last two semesters of high school.

So I have been a resident for the last two semesters of high school. Then shouldn't I be eligible for TAP as a resident? So. wanted to know if anyone got approved after they did the Questionnaire.

Forgot to File taxes

Hi, in 2022 I independently work for twitch (streamer). I was filling out Fasfa and it asked for my tax forms. I never filed for twitch because I thought I made under the threshold for filing and didn’t have too. (First Year filing for twitch mistake). Today I found out I should’ve field. I have 15 days till my cut off to turn in fafsa. How screwed am I? I will be filing taxes for twitch today, but not sure if it’s enough time.

2ed SAP appeal

Howdy, I am currently a freshman at my local university. During my second semester I suffered from a lot of mental heath issues resulting in poor grades. I understandably needed to make a SAP appeal but thankfully that was approved. During my next semester, I started off strong with great attendance as well grades but unfortunately a little over a month and half later my job decided to mess with my hours going from way too many hours to too little, I suffered financially due to my job being in a separate city about an hour away. I wrongfully believed my employer about fixing my schedule which eventually lead to me not being able to afford the gas between work and school resulting in me not being able to attended my classes anymore resulting in failed grades. The next semester Spring 2024 I had to submit a new SAP appeal, which got denied. At this point I was so focused on my finances that I didn't bother appealing and chose to focus on work. Once I was in a "safe" spot in my finances I left my job and got one near campus that is for less money but much better hours. I am now very eager to get back to school and fix my grades and continue my degree. I know I am going to have to submit a new SAP appeal but I want to make sure I covered all my bases and created a proper argument for why I failed my second semester

Included is my current letter that I plan to submit when the summer semester starts. Please let me know (kindly, I have a lot of anxiety) anything you believe I should include or remove.

The fall 2023 Semester started off great, I had a job that was working with my hours, I was staying caught up in my classes and I was understanding most of the concepts being taught. From the previous semesters I learned a lot about who I am as a learner, I learned the methods of studying and where my weak spots were, and I was determined to go the extra mile and work for a good grade.

After a few weeks had gone by, my employer had some grand plan and hired new employees, and to fit everyone into the schedule with what was supposed to be a temporary solution, they started cutting everyone's hours. Being that I was already having a shaky start financially for the fall 2023 semester this only made my problems worse. I became so preoccupied with my financial instability, I started to lose focus on my goals, my attendance became spotty. It quickly got to the point where I couldn’t afford the gas in my car to get to work and school, leaving me to stay with a relative nearby my place of employment in Saint George with no way to get to Cedar city to attend my classes. In the end I failed, because I didn’t prepare myself financially for the hardships that can happen during the semester as well as not acknowledging when I got too far behind in my classes. I also see what I did succeed at, in math, I got through 70% before I started to struggle and understood all of the concepts. In Into to Film, I was able to stay up to date till I physically could no longer attend the class.

In order to correct this mistake, I used the time during the spring semester to better my finances by starting off settling most of my financial burdens, and saved up an emergency fund to help with any potential problems that could arise housing, phone, and car payments etc. I went as far as left my previous employment, due to lack of a consistent schedule. A family member is even letting me stay with them at their home next to campus for a highly discounted rate, to help me stay focused, and remove any unnecessary burdens. I also now work for a local cleaning company where I have a part-time role in, that's able to work with my hours and help me keep a mindset on school. My plan is to give myself as much as my time to focus on my academics and as well for my own wellbeing. To help ensure my financial well being, I will also be attending a financial class in the fall.

If you read all that, I applaud you.

How to appeal financial aid?

My daughter has a tuition exchange scholarship and when we received it they said it would take the place of any other merit aid she received. So we were expecting the scholarship she she had originally been given to be revoked, but when we got the new financial aid package, they also took away the $25,000 in "estimated grants" she was given before. Is there a way to appeal this? I wouldnt expect to get the $25k, but even if they gave her $5k-$10k a year it would make a huge difference in her ability to take this scholarship.

How do I word this? Do I ask for a certain amount? I would just like to bring the cost down to something similar to what we would pay if she went to her local state school. Should I ask for $10k and then be happy if they come back with $5k?

My circumstances are that my husband died last year and I am supporting 2 kids on <$60k. I received a large chunk of life insurance money and thats whats killing me with financial aid. SHould I mention this in my appeal? LIke hey, I know I have this money, and I am OK using it but it would make a huge difference if I could use $25,000/year instead of $30k? I cant blow thru this money putting 2 kids thru college. I need it to pay my mortgage and eventually in retirement.

Please help! TIme is running out since most of these schools want your decision by May 1.

Thank you!!!!
