How is Pitreavie Area?

Hi all,

We've submitted an offer on a home in Pitreavie area and just wanted to check how is it living there please? I've checked SIMD and it seems nice with only issue being "Geographic Access Domain Rank" on the lower side but seems to be the case for most of that area. The seller said the estate is mostly older/retired people with new/younger families moving in as the older folks downsize. My coworker in Dunfermline said Pitreavie is nice area but I wanted to hear more opinions please, as I'm very anxious.

We're FTBs and have been in Edinburgh for nearly 7 years. We're looking to move to a quieter area that'd be nice to raise a family so we've mainly been checking out Duloch so haven't explored Pitreavie as much. I work from home but my partner works in Edinburgh city centre Mon-Fri. He says he's fine with the commute as can take X55 or the train from Rosyth/Inverkeithing station.

However, I've a bit nervous to go forward with this as closest station is Rosyth and I've heard it's best to avoid Rosyth.... Is Rosyth really that bad? I know our property would be more towards Dunfermline so would that be okay?

Thanks for your inputs šŸ˜Š

Can you appeal to have core paths removed?

This is quite a nerdy question, but I thought someone on this sub might have an answer. Iā€™ve done the walk from Wormit to Balmerino loads of times over the last few years. I did it today and a chunk of the core path that leads from Naughton Castle to Kirkton of Balmerino has been removed (see here!). The path used to run along a fence on the other side of which was someone garden. Thereā€™s now a gate up with a sign saying ā€œNot a core path. Access to Upper Craig Gardenā€.

So now thereā€™s just a chunk of the core path missing. I was under the impression the point was the core paths were meant to be protected. Is it likely that the owner of the house appealed to have the core path removed?

Thanks for any info!

Assistance Needed for Transitioning Utilities and Council Tax

Hello,

I moved to St Andrews about a month ago and have been renting a house, which Iā€™ve greatly enjoyed. However, I recently found a new place that I may move into next month.

In my current house, Iā€™ve already registered for broadband (BT), gas/electricity (British Gas), and council tax. I have some questions about transitioning these services:

  1. Gas/Electricity: My current tariff is fixed, and there is an exit fee. Would it be possible to transfer my account to the new address, or would I need to pay the exit fee to terminate the contract and start the new one with British Gas?
  2. Broadband: Can my broadband service also be transferred to the new address, or would additional fees apply for ending the contract?
  3. Council Tax: I currently pay my council tax via direct debit, with a fixed amount deducted monthly. How should I proceed with transitioning this to the new property?

Iā€™m not familiar with all the details of this process, so Iā€™d appreciate any guidance you can provide to help me manage this transition smoothly.

Thank you for your answers!

Iā€™m opening a new kind of gym in St Andrews

Iā€™m opening a new kind of gym in St Andrews.

The tl;dr explanation is: itā€™s a small pod with a treadmill, bike and weightsā€¦but unlike other gyms you get the whole place to yourself. Available 24/7 with access via scanning your phone at the door.

Weā€™re aiming to open in Feb 2025, and thereā€™s some design images on www.tiny-gyms.com. If you have any questions or comments (good or bad!) comment and Iā€™ll get back to you.

The backstory is Iā€™ve always enjoyed gyms, but most of my friends hate them and I wondered why. Turns out a huge % of people find gyms intimidating, despite wanting to exercise more. So I wanted to create a safe and comfortable exercise space for people who feel like busy public gyms arenā€™t for them.

Gas and Electricity Payment Enquiry

Hello! I moved to St Andrews in Scotland about a month ago and signed up for gas and electricity with Scottish Gas (which, as I understand, is the same as British Gas).

I am on a fixed tariff called 12M v15 for both gas and electricity. Here are the details:

For gas, I pay Ā£108.70 on the 25th of each month.

For electricity, I pay Ā£59.72 on the 25th of each month.

Rates:

Gas:

- Unit rate: 6.16p per kWh

- Standing charge: 23.58p per day

Electricity:

- Any Time unit rate: 23.96p per kWh

- Standing charge: 23.58p per day

Since I am new to the UK, I am not sure how the payment is calculated. Could someone please explain this to me?

As far as I know, apart from this fixed monthly payment, I may need to pay an additional amount. How is this extra amount typically calculated? Thank you so much!

best areas in fife on a budget?

sorry iā€™m sure this has been asked many times before but time changes things and wanted a more recent opinion.

iā€™m currently in england, have been for nearly 2 years, the city is bland and ugly, so grey and depressing. i come from south africa so used to lots of sun (not so much an issue now im used to it) but also lots of scenery and nature, mountains, rivers lakes waterfalls etc.

SA is one of the most dangerous countries to travel/live in, so crime isnā€™t so much an issue for me, however iā€™d like to settle down somewhere and raise a family, so iā€™d like for them to be safe. iā€™ve been looking and Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline (is that how you spell it?) are really affordable, great spacious houses with big gardens, i love it. however im not familiar with those areas as a whole, is there anything to do? i like stand alone houses with fields/farmland behind and these areas have that.

as i said im looking to settle down and raise a family so id like to be in an area that can give them a life, not just hikes and nature etc. maybe arcades, live music, whatever teenagers are into now i suppose. if you have any suggestions on areas in fife id appreciate it! the comments are always so mixed, some live kirkcaldy, others describe it as worse than the walking dead. i know its subjective but any advice will help.

budget is around 350/400k and i do drive, however i am very much planning for the future of kids so public transport needs to be easily accessible.

edit: if you could also give advice on definite no no areas and reasons iā€™d appreciate it! most posts iā€™ve read mention the same few areas over and over and then people debate however thereā€™s areas like one iā€™ve just seen (saline) that nobodies mentioned yet. TIA x

Bus fare for children

Hello!
I live in St Andrews, and I have a question about bus travel with my kids (ages 6 and 4). I understand that children under 5 travel free. Iā€™ve applied for an NEC card for my older son, but we havenā€™t received it yet. Tomorrow is their first day of school, and weā€™ll be taking the bus. If I pay for myself, will I also need to pay for them?

Many thanks!

Drunk teens

Parents get your kids in check. Everytime i go home from work i see kids between ages (8-16) at 9, 10 & 11 oclock at night drunk. Screaming abuse at everyone and destroying public property. Last night bunch of girls screaming abuse on the bus and a young lad drunk trying to start a fight with a couple with a new born baby. To the point he pused a 70 year old woman in the process.

Unaceptible behavour get them sorted out.

Registering with GP

Hello!

I am new to the area and moved to St Andrews a week ago. I am wondering how I should register with a doctor (if Iā€™m not mistaken, itā€™s called registering with a GP, right?). Could anyone explain the registration process, please? Should my spouse and children register as well?

Thank you!

Taxi Inquiry for St Andrews

Hello! My family (2 adults and 2 children) will be arriving at Leuchars train station next week. Our destination is St Andrews. We have four pieces of luggage, so we donā€™t think taking the bus would be convenient. I understand there are usually taxis near the bus station at Leuchars, but Iā€™m wondering if they are still available in the evening. We are scheduled to arrive at 8 pm. Could you also let me know the approximate cost of a taxi ride from Leuchars to St Andrews?

Thank you!

Fish Van

Apologies if this has been asked before.

Is there a fish van that still operates locally in Glenrothes?
