What are they doing right now?

Being the end of August and extremely hot (Midwest USA), what are wasps doing right now? Can someone educate me so that I can stop overanalyzing!? Where are they at in their life cycle?

Why Are These Wasps Being Weird?

Am actually the opposite of a wasp enthusiast, but hopefully you folks can help. I have a group of yellow jackets outside my third-story apartment window, they had previously built and been living out of a nest in the wall, recessed inside the top exterior corner of the window, but something seems to have happened there and they aren't using it anymore. Now, they're all gathered on my windowsill and have been acting SO strange. They spend all day clustered up into a ball with each other, sometimes with individuals flying away or returning. Some days they're very lowkey (very demure, very wasp), and aren't really doing much other than cuddling and cleaning themselves/each other (I think?), but some days, like today, they're frantic crawling all over each other. They'll do this for the entire day, from dawn to dusk.

It's hard to get a clear look at them from the angle I can see inside my house, and I can't really see them from outside without a ladder or bucket truck (ain't no way I'm going near them either). But I've been watching closely and my two initial hypotheses don't appear to be correct: I don't see any individual that looks like a queen they'd be trying to protect after falling out of the nest, and I don't see any indicator that they're trying to burrow in and make a new nest on the spot where they're all balled up.

Regardless, would love to know what they're up to, and if you all have recommendations other than an exterminator (because the only company near me with the equipment to get up there won't return my calls) to get them to leave, I'm all ears. I don't mind them being there as long as they don't come inside, which they haven't yet, but my major concern is that once it starts getting colder outside, they'll be looking for ways into a house where they are, quite frankly, unwelcome guests. Any insight is appreciated, buzz buzz or whatever y'all say.

Is this a wasp and if so, which one?

We saw this little creature outside, collecting food from a flower. I thought it was a bee because of its colours but my husband picked up the fact that it flies differently.

He managed to take this picture and now I agree it definitely doesn’t look like a bee.

It also looked like the creature was flying like a helicopter, and could hover in the same spot comfortably for a few minutes.

found 2 wasps in my room is this a cause for concern

hi guys, i am a 15 year old so bare with me here because i do not have the slightest clue about infestations or whatever, but recently me and my dad found two yellow jackets(? we think) in my room? like on the same day within six hours of eachother, my dad think they flew in when he opened the door but im a bit more skeptical because we have NEVER found wasps in our home (at least from what i can remember)

one seems like a coincidence, but two is enough to keep me up at night from worry that theres a secret evil third one or something

is this cause for concern? how could i check if theres some sort of nest i dont know about? there are multiple holes leading up to my ceiling, so if they're coming from anywhere, they're definitely coming from there. we havent found any wasps anywhere else, just in my room.

if i do have an infestation, should i be scared? will they sting me for no reason or for very little reason? should i continue to sleep in my room or should I move to the couch? i have a fear of big flying things

What did this big guy do to my bike?

So I watched a big wasp (long, black with yellow stripes. Paper wasp?) crawl into a small double sided hole in the frame of my bike. When it left after a few minutes, I saw some moist wood like material from both entrances. After another check, both sides are full and plugged up with the dried material. Plugged up, no way out for whatever is inside. What did this wasp do? And what do I do?

Help identify

I know this probably isn’t the best image, but these keep setting off our doorbell camera. We think they’ve made a nest in the doorframe, found a few dead ones inside as well, and they very aggressively swarm the front door. We’re at a loss on what to do about them.

Will wasps damage my roof?

I have a (presumably large as I can’t see the nest) wasps nest in my flat roof. I have no acccess to the roof space about 30 wasps hanging around the very small entrance mid day. I did try spraying them but it did not work and now in the uk we are being told there is a wasp shortage. I’m not worried about being stung, but are they busy turning my unseen wooden roof supports into paper?

I’m in the UK.

Can you tell me what this is?

This past weekend, out of nowhere, we noticed 20-30 “wasps” swarming all around the side of our house. Looked everywhere for a nest. Can’t see one. I think they’re living in the ground.

I’m trying to fugue out what they are so I can treat the area. They’re about 1-1.5” long. If they weren’t swarming I’d think possibly cicada killers. But I thought those were solitary creatures.

Reaction to wasp sting keep’s recurring

A few weeks ago, I was stung by a yellow jacket wasp. I took precautions afterwards, rinsing out the area with water and soap followed by a few days of antihistamines and cortisone cream to stop the itching. A few days after I completed the course, the entire area developed a rash that itched like crazy. Knowing that a person can have a delayed reaction to a wasp sting, I repeated the course do antihistamines and cortisone cream for an entire week, which helped it heal. It’s been approximately five days since I’ve completed the treatments and the rash and itching is back. Is this normal? If not, what can be done about it?

Questions about wasp fights...

Sorry, didn't know where else to ask this. Also, image is wasp tax. Don't know if ya'll do that or not here.

I know, or at least suspect, that different colonies may go at it depending on various factors, but will colony members get into skirmishes?

I'm asking because over the last 2 days, wasps keep falling darn near on my head in these random one-on-one skirmishes. One pair will drop. While I'm engrossed in their drama another pair will fall right infront of my face. I look up there's one or 2 wasps hanging out on the sprinklerhead prepping it for nest-building.

Is this social heirachy stuff? Skirmishes between competing colonies? Wasp-play?

Thanks!

Difference between early hornet/yellow jacket nest versus paper wasp?

Hi there,

Since it looks like all wasps/hornets/yellow jackets have a hexagonal umbrella within the nest that looks just like a regular paper wasp nest, is there a way to distinguish between, say, a hornet nest early in the season that just does not have the "walls" yet? Without getting close enough to examine the species by sight, I mean.

Thanks!

How aggressive?

My husband is deathly allergic, literally to wasps. I found this nest on the side of my house. I need to know how aggressive this species is, and what to do with it. Thank you in advance!
