Crow Showdown

We have a long-term crow family that visits us for food and entertainment. Today we had an amusing showdown.

Right to schedule there is a caw-caw-caw, which sounds like one crow calling for his buddies. I look out and, yes, there is one crow in the tree, yelling. No buddies.

I know from experience that this crow will not come down unless he has his buddies, and - no buddies. So I refuse to feed him. He wouldn't come and the squirrels would eat the food. I stand at the window. Waiting to see if his buddies show up. And he watches me and he yells. And yells. And yells.

Usually he would fly away if I am watching him, but he is invested in getting his buddies here so he stays and yells. Finally he gives up and flies away, still yelling. I feel bad but I go away from the window.

I check the window now and then, no crow, until about an hour later - there is the crow. He is sitting in the same place, in the same tree, and he is carefully not watching me or making any noise. And I can't see any other crows.

But, okay, I trust him. I go out and spread out their 'spread'. Peanuts in the shell. I turn around and: caw- caw- caw- caw! Four crows from four different directions. I come in and five crows are down, eating.

And just to let me know that this session was special, first, one crow brought his food in front of the window where I'm watching to land in the lawn to eat, where he was joined by a second crow. They went back to the feed and repeated this. Then everyone flew past the window as they left.

A definite, we-see-you.

They do like to show off sometimes.

Questions for Fiction/writing project/s

tl;DR I'm trying to get back into writing while also using it as an excuse to learn new things. Crows figure into a few of these projects and I'm using this as an excuse to learn more.

Project 1: 'silly' self insert animorphs fanfic The 'who cares? Just do it' thing. Yet I want to actually have a little meat on the bone here.

Project 2: Claws and Chrome - A post-humanity story. Non anthropomorphic uplifted animals and intelligant robots inherit the earth. This is a story about a specific area of that world. Crows happen to be one of the factional groups.

Relevance: I could just, pardon the phrase, wing it on both. However I may as well try learning.

Can crows from differing groups coexist or is it pure 'you are in my territory. Buzz Off'? IE I were to find a downed crow. Bring it home because cold, or whatever, or take it to a shelter or other group. They release it elsewhere. How likely is that bird going to be to integrate?

Why peanuts? I get crows like unsalted peanuts (can't blame 'em really) but why? Is it like, the crow equivilant to a candybar? How un/healthy are they?

Say Igot a crow call (either a bird call and learned how to do crow noises or a digital thing that does playbacks) how universal are the differing noises/meanings? IE one caw for getting attention. Two for a more emphatic PAY ATTENTION. Three for 'DANGER! FLY!' much less the trills and screes and the like.

Crows I know have a wide area of vision wit honly the back of their head/right behind their head as their one blind spot. But like... in terms of fidelity and accuity what sort of vision do they have? Like could a crow read a book someone is holding (nevermind the ability to comprehend written language. Just an example)

Related: do they see in UV or is the irredesance of their feathers more incidental and they tend to only see into high violate instead of true UV?

Something Exciting to Share

The crow(s) I have been giving treaties to on a regular basis for years have been absolutely SHOUTING every morning before sunrise & waking me up. I looked out my window this morning just to figure out what the hell they’re doing back there (other than them knowing that’s where my bedroom is and complaining that their snack plate is full of rain water lol). Well, they have decided to build their nest directly outside my back bedroom window in an oak tree. I find this rather interesting since she (I believe it’s the female of the pair that I see most consistently - she has a wonky wingfeather) is always too afraid to partake in treats if she sees me through my front room window. My new alarm clocks better let me see some fledglings soon!🐦‍⬛🖤

I feed crows at a park where people walk their dogs and when I feed the crows, the crows bark at me. They imitate the sound of a barking dog, why are they doing this? Just for fun?

Anti crow measures

I want to start off by saying that I'm not interested in killing this crow or harming it in any way. For the past few weeks, there's been a crow (or maybe different crow every time, I cannot tell them apart) pecking at the window glass surrounding our front door. I don't know why, but it's loud and annoying, scares our pets, and I'm worried it'll damage the window somehow. Does anyone have recommendations for humane ways of scaring crows away from the front door area? I don't want to discourage them from hanging around the rest of the house because I really do like crows, but this pecking has been going on for almost a month. I'm fed up.

Crows (maybe 20) are flying up and cracking walnuts on the street. Very interesting to watch, does it mean anything besides they want to eat lol?
