Countryside crows show no interest in food

After a week of placing a plate of monkey nuts and almonds outside every morning at the same time the crows would appear not to have any interest. It seems that the countryside crows are abit more independent and haven’t had the chance to lower their guard around humans. They forage in the field opposite but it’s not possible to get closer to give them any food so they can get a taste for it.

I’ve tried going to the local playing field where they frequent too, although after throwing some monkey nuts for them they fly off.

The crows are in a big group, rather than one or two coming in the garden as some people seem to post.

Any suggestions on how to proceed? Grateful for any ideas

Have any of you's seen crows using sticks as weapons in the air ?! I just did

Was observing a crow chase and this one crow doing the chasing looked like it had its talons outright, I quickly realised it was carrying a stick! It flew above the other crow and dropped it, it missed the crow but was for sure trying to hit it 😆 I've never ever observed this behaviour, I know they use tools but I didn't know they used weapons. The never cease to amaze me even after all these years of learning about them.

Has anyone else seen this?

I made acquaintances with rural American Crows. Aiming at friendship. My story, and I have questions.

I've been meeting crows for breakfast each morning at sunrise for 3 weeks now. On occasion an afternoon snack as well. They were already coming regular for many years, and pecking around my horse pasture. I've paid no mind. Only the last 3 weeks, I've decided to commit to daily breakfast treats. There are 2 regulars that are there very quickly in "the" tree out at the corner. It started out me beating them there. The first 2 come from different directions. Others show up in pairs or small groups within 10-15 minutes. At first I'd beat them all and drop the treats from 50 yards away after the first 2 arrived. On the 3rd day I was late, and the firdt 2 beat me there. As soon as I rounded the corner they went bonkers cawing. Thought I'd blown it, and they'd scat, but it turned out this was more like excitement. I always drop the treats and walk away only looking when the nuts fall. The day after I waited a little longer, and heard some others had arrived, but I spook all but 2 nearly every time. Also, I have no idea if it's the same 2 or not on the ground, but there are always a couple that will stay in the field much longer than the others when I'm moving around the property. The rest are spooked very quickly. 11 of them are there within minutes of the first few. More there after a bit sometimes. I tried hanging out in the field, back to them, not staring, but they all end up leaving then coming back later after my retreat. I hang out and watch them with binoculars from a distance.
Questions: How long before they'll get closer? I know its a months and years kinda scale. If your crow friends are rural, how long did it take before one landed on the ground while you were present? I can tell a slight warming to my presence, but like an inch a day. I've noticed they bail if anyone else is out, even across the street, 200 yards away.

Would crow decoys work to my advantage? Has this ever been tried in a non hunting situation? I'm considering setting up a fake feeding session for the morning comers to observe, maybe ease their nerves a bit if they see me close to "others". On the flipside of that scenario, crows are territorial. Would this spook them even worse, or have them mad at me for the treachery once the decoys get made?

City crows are accustomed to seeing lots of people, I can easily approach and stare down the crows at my work parking lot, but rural crows nope out at the first human glance inside of 100 yards. I'd like to know everyone's experience, but please specify if your local crows are urban/rural.

TLDR: I've made acquaintances with rural crows, and want to cultivate the friendship. Want to hear your crow stories.

Feeding crows

I want to start feeding the crows in my area. I'm in southern Idaho. What do crows eat or perfer to eat? If I move out of state, would they follow? Or be mad? Would I be able to get them to follow?

Crow Newbie

Over the last few months, I have fallen into the crow rabbit hole and am now on a mission to befriend one (or a few) of the crows that hang out in my neighborhood. I've noticed them in the trees in my neighbor's backyard and at the house across the street from us. We have a bird bath in the far corner of our backyard, where I've been placing a silver plate with unsalted shelled peanuts, cashews, and mandarin oranges. I do this around the same time every day (5-6pm) and whistle in hopes that they will eventually catch on to it as a feeding call.

I've set out three crow meals so far and the last one I set out, they seemed to like the nuts/cashews. I'm not 100% that it's crows taking this food but of course, I'd like to hope it is. lol

Any recommendations?
