Avoiding Scams

Deal locally, face-to-face —follow this one rule and avoid 99% of scam attempts.

Do not extend payment to anyone you have not met in person.

Beware offers involving shipping - deal with locals you can meet in person.

Never wire funds (e.g. Western Union) - anyone who asks you to is a scammer.

Don't accept cashier/certified checks or money orders - banks cash fakes, then hold you responsible.

Transactions are between users only, no third party provides a "guarantee".

Never give out financial info (bank account, social security, paypal account, etc).

Do not rent or purchase sight-unseen—that amazing "deal" may not exist.

Refuse background/credit checks until you have met landlord/employer in person.

Anyone have a good or bad experience renting a room or finding a roommate off Craigslist?

Just curious if anyone has had good or bad experiences renting off Craigslist or finding a roommate? I am currently contemplating renting a room off Craigslist or finding a roommate off there. I found one person so far that seemed sane, financial independent, and location/price are exactly what I am looking for.

Sooooo confused about map vs product display

I have tried and tried to find a way to NOT see the map interface when doing a search, and instead see actual furniture when I start a new search. I have clicked on every button and can't seem to crack this one. I don't want to see the map. I want to see images of products for sale. Any suggestions? I just moved and am trying to furnish an entire 2 bedroom!!!

Renewing 20 and more items at a time?

Is there a way to renew without having to click on renew, then hit go back, repeat 20 and more times? I feel like I am being asked to renew every day(I have a total of 80 items).

Is it ok to include a WhatsApp number in the ad, if it's a gig?

Hi everyone, Is the direct WhatsApp number in the text isn't prohibited? Didn't see this in the rules. Would appreciate your advice about what else can trigger them for removal, besides the location. I need to post a gig for online focus group. I'm in California, if I'm 30-40 miles from LA, is it ok to post there?

Searching “half baths” in housing

How can I search for half baths in housing?

I’m looking for a range from 1.5 baths to 2.5 baths and can’t make it work in the app or in browser.

On the app, in filters, the “baths” field opens the numeric keypad, including a decimal, but if you try to type “.” it gets erased and then you’re searching for 15 baths. On browser, there is no decimal and also no slash to put “1/2”.

Advertisers do offer half baths, but only in the text portion of the ad. So is it just impossible?

Thanks for any help!

I have a bunch of search notifications set in the app which are push delivered. Right around the 18.1.1 iOS update the notifications stopped working (not sure if related). Anyone experiencing the same issue? TIA.

Red flags? A potential robbery?

Someone is offering me an item for a super good deal. Like shockingly good, but they are still making money (aka something that'd be sold for 350 bucks is sold for 200)

They sent me pictures with their phone number, but apparently they have some circumstances and they can't meet me in person. Their "significant other" dropped off the item in a garage in their home and once I park they will remotely open the garage for me to pick it up.

According to them I don't have to send payment until after I pick up the item. That's a LOT of trust for a stranger.

I do have their phone number and they did send an email verifying that they indeed have the item, but I think I still have a few red flags going on. I don't know if I'm just being paranoid but something doesn't add up despite their reassurances. Am I just being paranoid?

Got A Kitten Off Craigslist

So my friend wanted to get a kitten for his cousin. I looked around online for kittens. A lot of people will say to adopt from a shelter which was our first idea, but Ive honestly had horrible experiences trying to adopt from shelters. I wont go into specifics but if you want to hear abt it just lmk. So I told my friend Ill look online for him. I found a couple listings for kittens, sent these people messages. One responded and she was very nice. I felt bad bc she was only giving away her kitten bc her family turned out to be allergic. I told my friend if he liked the kitten and he said yeah. So we told her we’d go pick him up. She asked if I wanted to meet at her house or if I wanted to meet somewhere public, I told her I dont care, whatever she is comfortable with. She told me she wanted to meet at a gas station across the street from her house. She even sent me a pic of the gas station from her window. Her excuse wasn’t that she was uncomfortable giving her address away but that she didnt want her daughter to see she was giving away the kitten. She said the kitten would be 50$ and that she paid 250$ for it. I said thats fine and went set up a time to go pick up the kitten. Im driving to pick it up with my friend when she texts me asking if Im giving cash or cashapp, and that her husband’s zelle doesnt work. (Which is kinda odd but whatever). I told her I’d be paying cash. We arrive and I send her a message. Her husband pulls up in a car beside us. She steps out the car from the back and hands me the kitten and I give her the money. Then we drive off. On the way home me and my friend both felt like this transaction was off. The kitten was perfectly healthy it seemed, I checked him for flees bc I have my own 2 cats but he did not have any. The kitten was completely fine to my eyes. Now the part about this all that felt odd was the family. She told me she wanted to meet at the gas station so her daughter wouldnt see, but when she stepped out the car, her daughter was right there. Watching us take the cat. Not only that but we live in the east coast. They were from California (at least thats what their license plate would suggest). Anyway, I just wanted to post abt this and hear what anybody thinks? Ive seen people has crazy stories and bad experiences with getting pets from Craigslist. What do you guys think? Am I being weird and overthinking it? We already have the kitten so its whatever at this point but yeah.

is this a scam?

this is a copy pasted conversation with potential buyer:

Buyer: “Is it still available?$600?”

Me: “yes absolutely!”

Buyer: “Great! I will take it, but currently I'm out of town I just got married and we're on a vacation at the moment would you accept mailing you a cashiers check, when the check clears up. We’ll send movers to come for the pick up whenever it convenient for you. I don't mind adding an extra $150 for the hold. Is that fine with you?”

Me- “Yea that would be great! So $750 total and once the check clears we set up a time to get the movers?”

Buyer: “Perfect, leave me your name address and mailing info to mail the check”

Also just want to add that i listed this item a few hours ago today.

Seller Wants Shipping

I’m currently trying to purchase an Apple Watch from craigslist and the seller insists on using shipping services as they state that they’re currently busy with work. He allowed me to pay half of the full amount as initial payment and pay the rest once I’ve received the item. He also offered to show his ID for more confidentiality. Should I go on ahead with it?

Buying a bike, but seller made strange(?) request

Seller stated they would leave the bicycle on their porch, and I could look at it; if I liked it, I could take it and leave the money under the mat. Although this poses no immediate risk for me just seems sketchy, should I be concerned? Neighborhood is rather upscale, and the house seems to be in a visible place.

Edit: Got the bike everything is good

How do I reply to someone's response to my ad?

I posted an ad on craiglist and someone replied. The reply came as an email from the randomly-generated email address thing that craigslist does. They did not include their number, so how do I respond. I do not see a way to reply from within the craigslist website. Is the only way to reply to that by replying to the email normally as if it was a normal email? Will the person still receive it even though the email they sent me came from the randomly generated craigslist email? I just want to make sure they receive my reply. Thanks!

Not IP blocked, just blocked

My fiancé has been using Craigslist to search for a new job. Out of the blue we get the 'Your request has been blocked' message with the option to "contact us here" but nothing happens when I click. I tried rebooting my router to get a new IP address and that worked for 1 job post. As soon as she as done replying to a job post the computer gets blocked again. Only happens in 1 computer, our phones work fine with no issues. I've tried clearing all the cookies and cache but nothing seems to work. Any ideas what I can check next? Everything I've found online is referring to the IP blocked error but that isn't what we are getting and the only "fix" is a modem reboot.

How can I avoid rent scams?

I’m gonna start looking for rent in my city but not quite sure what kind of stuff I should avoid to fall in a scam or what things are red flags.

I mean, I know for sure that if the offer is too good or very cheap prices for huge apartments with 4 bedrooms, etc. But what else I should keep in mind?

Is this guy a troll or a creep?

I’m selling a dress on Craigslist that belonged to my sister, who was very obsessed with J-fashion and Lolita kinds of dresses in the 2010s. A man that is interested in what I’m selling, emails me and says this: “Hiya im young adult male renting room an caught sniff landlady pantie😒at time me underwear full of soil she has me in sissy plastic panty diaper training, she want me ask if this be great sissy dress for doing house chores.” I have no idea what this meant but aside from the “i have soiled underwear” part, I deciphered that he’s wondering if this dress is fit for house chores. I told him “i suppose it’s fit for doing house chores. Are you interested in buying?” He replies with: “Yes mame im fairly small landlady sarah says show nice lady why you are in diapers an she says thank you for agree sissy diapers an no fussing bout stinky things an good for young men to be feminized😒” He then goes on to send me a fcking photo of him wearing a slightly transparent diaper that’s SAGGING full of SHT. Im still 50/50 about him being a troll or a creep, so I reverse search the image and it’s from the r/Dudesindiapers subreddit. I told him “The photo you showed me is from the “r/DudesInDiapers” subreddit. Also, are you interested in buying or not?” And he’s gone silent.

I am not making this up, you want screenshots of this whole thing, I’ll send you them. You want the link to the photo he sent me of him posing with his undergarments sagging with SH*T??? I’ll send it to you. But is this guy a creep? Or a troll? You tell me.

Posts with only screenshots

Why do some posts only have screenshots of the item in question. Seems like a scam, but I don’t understand why they’re unable to just use the photo they screenshotted. Isn’t the screenshot sitting right there next to it in their camera roll?

No reply button on Craigslist ad?

Hello! I'm hoping someone in this sub can answer a question. I found an ad I would like to reply to, but there's no Reply button in the upper left, or contact info in the body of the post. How would I contact the person who put up the ad? Thank you!

OLD AMERICAN MUSCLE CAR SCAMMER IN NORTH VAN-BEWARE

Here is a picture of professional scammer who is posing as car seller. She had her ad listed on craigslist last week where she's selling a 1969 Camero. I sent her a message as I was interested and she immediately went on to tell me that someone else is interested and has been offered a $400 down deposit. I told her that I would like to see the car in person as soon as possible and I do not mind offering an additional $100 so that we can secure the transaction. I asked her to send me her driver's license and address and she sent both via text message. She sent me her daughter's email address where I could send the $500 etransfer. Upon sending the etransfer, she stopped texting and didn't pick up any of my calls. I've attached a picture of her driver's license, address as well as her daughter's picture so that everyone could take caution and not get scammed by them (mother and daughter). The police are involved and they have confirmed that this is not a stolen id. I've never been scammed before and I must say that, after this experience, I will never trust anyone again.

CL personals ever gonna make a comeback??

Used to have a lot of fun and met lots of people using m4m and m4f ads. I like it all and it was a easy totally discreet way to meet.

They need to bring the Personal section back!!

Warning For Cat Buyers Online - I got scammed!

Hi everyone, I am posting this as a warning so other people don't fall for the scam. I recently purchased a kitten where the seller which I saw their ad on craigslist, sold the kitten as a Scottish straight. They provided me with fake images, pretending that they were his parents. The kitten was too young at the time for me to be able to distinguish but after some investigating and watching the kitten, grow a bit, he is definitely not a Scottish street. So I want to make sure I warn other people so they don't fall for this bait and switch. The sellers were two individuals who both live in Brooklyn New York. I posted their ad for your reference. And images they provided me. The sellers also went by a fake name and wanted payment through Zelle. So guys before you purchase anything from anyone, please do your background check and don't make the mistake that I did.

Should for sale items in free category be flagged?

If you see someone asking money for an item in the "free" category, should you flag it? Or are flags for more serious issues?

Has anybody had any luck finding jobs on Craigslist?

I’m currently working two jobs though I’m still open to more work. I’ve been searching on LinkedIn, Indeed, ZipRecruiter and other websites and still haven’t had any luck sending 100’s of applications per day.

I’m sifting through Craigslist and I’ve met with a guy, the offer seemed…. Sketchy. And so obviously I didn’t follow through. Apart from that one interaction, I haven’t had any luck.

Has anybody found any good jobs through Craigslist?

Craigslist ads for professionals?

Does anyone know if Craigslist offers ads for professional advertisers (like Google, or Reddit ads). I'm looking to promote a paint recycling program across several provinces in Canada and I can only find organic posts limited to a city or postal code

How does this guy not get banned?

He’s been running these ads for years with the worst keyword spam imaginable. There are pages and pages of keywords that match pretty much everything, so his ads show up in most of my saved searches. I flag it most times, but they just keep coming. Any insight?

Can’t attach a screenshot, but his site is www[.]wantedoldmotorcycles[.]com.

Search category with just excluded keywords

Is it possible to view a category with excluded keywords, i.e., see everything posted in a category except posts with certain keywords? For example, can one view all cars for sale except "Ford?"

Typing only "-ford" in the search bar doesn't work. It looks like the exclusion requires a keyword to search with the exclusion keyword.

In a saved search how do I say what I'm NOT looking for? Putting a minus sign is not working.

Putting a minus sign before a word is still giving me those posts.

Scammer posted my house for rent

Found out a scammer posted my house for rent on Craigslist because someone stopped by asking about the house. Besides flagging the post, what else can I do. And Craigslist needs to make it harder for scammers to do things like this, it's unacceptable, now I'm wasting my time trying to get the listing removed.
