Constructed in 1856, the Basilica of Taal is considered to be the largest Spanish colonial chirch ever built in the Philippines with a length of 291 ft. and width of 157 ft. The basilica is built on the Latin cross layout and features three naves, an octagonal dome, two transept, and ornately painted trompe l’oeil ceilings.
The Basilica is under the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lipa (est. 1911).
This church was declared a minor basilica in 1954 (3rd in the country) and a National Historical Landmark in 1974. The town of Taal boasts a well preserved Poblacion with Spanish-era ancestral houses and Casa Real from the 18th and 19th century. The town itself is a Philippines National Heritage Site and is on the tentative list as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (which includes the Basilica, Poblacion, and Taal Lake/Volcano Landscape).
The Abbey of Kells was founded by St. Colmcille in the 6th c., though the main period of activity started in the early 9th c. It’s most famous as being the place where the Book of Kells was (at least in part) created and kept until the 17th c. Little of the medieval monastery survives today, with the most prominent feature being this round tower, standing 28 meters tall.
